Work began on this book in 1989, when members of the
Doraville Library's History Committee determined that Doraville's
history should be written. Merle Evans, committee chairman,
worked with members Ed Pelfrey, Helen Norman, Fannie Mae Jett
and John Creel under the direction of Mayor Gene Lively and City
Commissioners Lamar Lang, Ray Jenkins, Forest Fleming, Sam
Gray, Don Lillard and Charles "Bubber'' Wall, collecting informa
tion.
We have taken the information these and other people pro
vided, plus everything we could gather, and done our best to
incorporate it into this book.
Special thanks to Jeanette Graham, who provided a priceless
collection of old newspapers, and to Ed Pelfrey, who provided
many of the pictures and recollections.
Thanks also to Franklin Garrett and the Atlanta Historical
Society and to Delia Gilleland and the DeKalb Historical Society.
Doraville Librarian James Draper provided scrapbooks and refer
ence materials.
The Georgia Department of Archives and History and the
DeKalb Library System provided important records.
Many other people have given us valuable information and
help. We thank them all.
Much of what we have gathered has come from old newspa
per clippings, saved without the dateline or name of the publica
tion. Much has come from the recollection of people who have
lived in Doraville for many years. In some cases, accounts varied.
We have done our best to be accurate, but there inevitably will be
errors and omissions. This we regret.
Everything we have learned backs up the City's motto that
Doraville is, and always has been, "A Good Place To Live."
