PALEOCHORA
BEACHES

As well as the two main beaches of Pachia Ammos (sandy beach) and Votsala (stony beach),
there are others, which are within walking distance or a short drive away.

Going west from Paleohora along the road to Koundoura are:
Psilos Volakas 2,5 kms. A small cove close to the road with an area to park off the road.

It has clear water and rocks you can jump or dive off.

Grammeno Beach 4kms. A rocky peninsula with 2 beaches, one facing west (sand) and

the other east (shingle). Car parking, cantina, sun beds & parasols. Good snorkelling. There
is a taverna nearby also called Grammeno, which has a reputation for good Cretan food.

Krios Beach 8kms. A long shingle beach with a cantina, sun beds and parasols. It is at

the start of the coastal walk to Elafonisi. Car parking. To reach this beach, follow the road
through Koundoura until you almost reach the end, where the asphalt runs out. At the sign to
Krios beach, turn left down a rough track, which leads to the parking area.

Going east from Paleohora is:
Gialiskari Beach 4kms. There are in fact three beaches here, one sandy, two shingle, at

the foot of the gorge running down from Anidri village. There is car parking, a cantina, sun
beds & parasols. Follow the road out of town towards Anidri, past the stony beach and the
campsite, then fork right along a rough track next to the shore.

RADIO & TV

RADIO STATIONS

Here are a couple of good stations to save time in searching to find one.

97.7 Star fm
93.2 Easy fm English
93.8 Cretan Music
97.4 Rythmos fm – Greek pop
98.2 Magic fm Greek pop
100.2 Max FM- Greek & English pop
106.0 Classical
107.3 AFN American Forces Network- Country & Rock

SATELLITE TV
If you have satellite TV, note that there will usually be a couple of English channels – usually
news channels, some cartoons & then depending on the type of set up – it will have other
languages as well. You may find channels that have movies with English subtitles. Note that if
you are a football fan, you have come to the right country, most café bars show the various
football or other sports events on the big screen TV, even if it isn’t a Greek team playing. The
Greeks love football so you are sure not to miss any of the matches for world cup finals or
other big games. It is usually advertised on boards outside the café if there is a match coming
up.

LOCAL TV CHANNELS
For those who do not have satellite TV, here are a couple of useful tips for the local TV. Most
of the movies or English series are shown around 9pm or 11pm (after the news) and are
subtitled in Greek. On Saturday & Sunday mornings there are cartoons, but in Greek. Later in
the afternoon they have a few American series & usually movies in the evenings.
The popular channels are:
MEGA
ANT1
ALPHA
STAR
NEPIT
SKAI
Going real local there is the KYDON & KRITI TV channels which are based in Crete & usually
all in Greek.

LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL NEWSPAPERS
If you are interested in finding out what is happening in Greece, The Athens News is the
largest English speaking newspaper in Greece. It comes out on Fridays.

International papers are sold in most major towns- usually in minimarkets in
tourist resorts or kiosks. The “Newstand” in Chania on Skalidi Str., not too far
from the top of Halidon St. has a huge range of International papers,
paperbacks and magazines.

GREEK SIESTAS

There is no doubt that if you have been to Greece before you might have an experience
somewhat like this: you came upon a shop or taverna of some sort and found the person in
charge either quite dozy or actually asleep on the job. You might think it is standard ‘Greek’
service, which it is, but we have to remember- why?
A typical routine, in the life of a Greek, seems to start rather early and round 2pm is
lunchtime. This is usually quite a heavy meal including fresh bread to mop up the olive oil.
After such a meal it is almost mandatory for the body to be horizontal, so immediately, lunch
is followed by a wonderful siesta. Upon waking, a strong icy-cold nescafe frape or Greek
coffee is necessary for an eye opener.
Now, in order for the whole country to have its rest between 3pm and 5pm (sometimes it
drags out to even 6pm) they have a law to ensure that people mind this rule.
Now - imagine the days before tourism existed in Greece, there probably wasn’t a need for
this law, but as Greek lifestyle has had to change they are still trying to reserve their right to
some peace during siesta hours. So do not find it strange that if you are in a café bar and
suddenly they turn their stereos down or even off, you can be sure without checking your
watch that it will be 3pm.
Even the shop hours seem to conveniently coincide with siesta hours; though we aren’t sure
which came first. That is also why it is not a done thing for one Cretan to telephone another
during these hours, unless they are prepared to be verbally abused!!
So here is some helpful advice to keep friendly with your local neighbours - definitely respect
this favourite national ritual. Better still, when in Greece do as the Greeks do & have a siesta-
just because you can!
Perhaps this explains why the locals are capable of eating late?

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Here is a list of the Greek public holidays when banks, museums, and most shops are closed:

25th March Greek Independence Day Parades of school children &

military in most towns commemorating the 1821 uprising
29th April Good Friday (Orthodox) Banks are closed but shops are open

in the daytime until 6pm
1st May
2nd May Easter Sunday (Orthodox) &

Easter Monday & May Day (holiday carried over) (Labour Day)

Locals pick flowers & make wreaths to hang on their door to celebrate spring
20th June Holy Spirit Monday Public holiday but shops still open.
15th August Assumption of Virgin Mary Greeks celebrate the day with family reunions.

The whole population is on the move either side of this day, so it’s a good time to avoid any

kind of transportation.
28th October Ochi Day (‘No!’ Day) Ochi” Day commemorates General Metaxas’s refusal of

the Italians ultimatum in 1940 and precipitated the fall of Greece in the Second World War.

Parades with school children & military in most towns.

FESTIVALS

23rd of April Feast of Agios Georgos (St. George) (on that day or the Tuesday following
Easter, if it lands during Lent). The feast day of St George, Crete’s patron saint and patron
saint of shepherds. The most elaborate celebration is in Asi Gonias where thousands of goats
& sheep are gathered at the town church for shearing, milking & blessing. Fresh milk
accompanies the ensuing feast.

20th-28th May Anniversary of Battle of Crete WW II, folk dancing and ceremonial events at
the various memorials. Laying of wreaths at Souda Bay Cemetary.
June (last week) – Navy Week is celebrated in even-numbered years during the last week in
June & commemorates Crete’s relationship with the sea. In harbour cities there are music
and dancing events.
24th June -Birth of St John the Baptist. Wreaths made on May Day are kept until this day,
when they are burned on bonfires.
July-Wine Festival. The wine festival of Rethymno is held in the municipal park with wine
tastings and local cuisine.
End of October Chestnut Festival Held in the village of Elos music & dancing while
chestnuts are roasted on open fires.

NAME DAYS
Hardly a day passes on Crete without celebrations in honour of somebody or something - a
saint, a village festival, a harvest or a patriotic event. Each name has one place - a chapel, a
monastery or a village - where on major saints' days the people bearing the name of that
saint tend to gather. These 'name-days' are more important to Greeks than their birthdays.

Page 57

PUBLIC BUSES

Local buses on Crete offer an inexpensive means of transport throughout the island and are a
boon to the traveler on a budget with plenty of time to spare. Between major towns and resort
areas, the buses are normally quite modern and the service fairly frequent ie. every 1 or 2
hours during daytime hours. Buses to smaller towns and outlying villages tend to be
infrequent ie. once or twice a day.

Bus Stations are centrally located in most of the larger towns on Crete and if your journey is
starting from here you should purchase a ticket from the ticket office and not on the bus.
Alternatively, if you are starting your journey elsewhere, you can purchase tickets from the
booth/kiosk nearby or at the nearest mini-market or on the bus (but do have change with
you). Children under 4 yrs old are free.

The buses start early in the morning and usually run til the evening,
depending on where you are going. The Green buses provide the
long distance service and start & finish at the main bus station in
Chania.

The town buses which are blue buses / single deckers sometimes covered in adverts
(Running from Chania –Kalamaki- Agios Apostolis- Chryssi Akti) start & finish their journey
from the Square 1866 which is just around the corner from the bus station.
The other town buses starting & finishing at the National Bank of Greece in Chania go to the
Halepa- Agios Matheos & the University of Crete on Akrotiri.
There are ticket machines conveniently located at the pick-up points in Chania so you can
purchase your ticket before getting on the bus.
(See your “Property Manual” for more specific information for your area)

If you are getting on a bus no matter where you are and headed into Chania, at the place
where the bus route ends is where you would pick up the bus to get back again.

Bus timetables for the long distance journeys are available at the Bus Station, so it's best to
go there for more information on current timings as they do change every couple of months.
On Sundays, buses still run, but not as often. A Useful Tip: So you don't end up the wrong
bus check the destination with the driver first! Or check online for the latest times & prices:
www.bus-service-crete-ktel.com/timetable.php

TAXIS

There are several taxi ranks (24 hr service) in the larger towns or you can hail one 'en-route'.
Alternatively, you can telephone for one and pay a small surcharge - an automatic €2 plus a
small fee depending on where the driver is when he receives the booking. They are relatively
cheap (when the metre is on) compared to UK prices. You may need to remind the driver to
switch the metre on when you get in! If you aren’t confident in ordering a taxi, call Diana’s Travel
and they will do it for you. Taxis are good value for large parties, but please note they are
licensed to carry 4 persons + 1 infant maximum and the Police do make spot-checks. Tipping is
normal- if you were satisfied.

CAR HIRE

If you would like to hire a car please call Diana’s Travel or Diane on her mobile and let them
know the group of car and for how many days. They will check availability and prices for you
and get back to you. Prices include delivery/collection to/from your accommodation and it is
possible to end the car hire at one of the airports.
All prices do include local taxes, unlimited kilometres and insurance. Please note that car hire
companies can only allow two named drivers and they will need to show their driving licenses
at the start.

HELPFUL HINTS when driving on Crete

We must stress the fact that the car insurance of any car hire company does not include
damage to the tyres, windscreen, wing mirrors or the undercarriage of the car. So
please be very careful when driving on unpaved roads or tracks as they tend to have a lot of
potholes. You will be responsible to cover costs of any repairs/replacements for damage, and
towing of the car if necessary.
PARKING FINES They are very expensive so please avoid illegal parking as you will have to
pay the fine because the traffic police do inform the car hire company when they issue a
ticket. A parking fine can be €30 - € 80. In order to discourage locals from parking anywhere,
the police now tow cars away and remove license plates, and the fine to retrieve the car is
€450. To pay a fine, if it is pink ticket it is paid in the Town Hall, if it is yellow, it is paid to the
Harbour Police. You can give the money and the fine to the car hire company or your
representative and they can sort it out for you.

SEAT BELTS are compulsory in Crete.

We also strongly advise that you NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE because if you do have an
accident under the influence of alcohol, your insurance is invalidated and we would not be
able to help you.

PUNCTURES: If you do get a flat tyre and it is obviously just a minor
puncture, you should use the spare tyre until you get the tyre fixed. Find a
petrol station that will fix a simple puncture, the repair damage will cost
approximately: €8 - €10. If the damage is extremely bad and the tyre needs to be replaced,
be prepared to pay somewhere between € 35 - € 100 depending on the group of your car.
If you need any assistance please ring the car hire company or our head office.

ACCIDENTS: In the event of an accident please call the police (dial 100), the car hire firm
and the Freelance Holidays office as soon as possible. Do not let the other driver leave the
scene before the police or car hire owner has arrived, especially if they are at
fault.

SPEED LIMITS On the National Highway the maximum speed is
90 km/hour, unless other signs indicate otherwise. Radar and hidden
cameras are positioned along the highway. (See Map D) The speed
limit on secondary roads is 60km/hour or whatever is indicated by the
signs.

LOCKING KEYS INSIDE THE CAR OR LOSING KEYS You will be responsible to pay for
delivery of spare keys and/or replacing the one lost. Do not attempt to break windows of the
car to get it!

Page 60

CONFIRMING
RETURN FLIGHTS

If you have been given a local number to contact & your paperwork says that you should
reconfirm your return flight, then go ahead and give them a call. If you have not been given the
appropriate telephone number to reconfirm your flights then all you need is your flight tickets and
that the confirmation that you are on that flight.

By reconfirming a flight this does not mean that you are confirming that the flight will be ‘on time’
as this can only be confirmed once the aircraft has left the UK on the day you fly. Regardless of
any delays it is always advisable to get to the airport no matter what the normal 2 hours prior to
the departure time. When confirming a flight they will usually ask for the lead name of the person
in the party and the number of people in the party.
Note that if you had any special requests on the flight over here, it is usually automatically in the
system for the return flight as well. If, for some reason your request didn’t get to you on the way
out, it probably won’t be on the return journey either, so best to inform at the check–in desk when
collecting your boarding passes.

If you have a special medical need and/or require certain seating please
make your request known when you are checking in for the flight. Be
advised that there are limited seats on the aircraft and any special
requests are usually on first come first serve basis.

FLYING VIA ATHENS

If you are flying with one of the Domestic Airlines we recommend that you confirm at least 24
hours before the flight and it is best to call during office hours. The telephone numbers are
listed below for either local airline – you can ring these numbers regardless if you are
departing out of Chania or Heraklion. Note that the check in time for flights from Crete to
Athens is only 1 hour before take-off.

Olympic Airways: +30 28210- 66088 (7am-9pm Chania Airport)
or the main office in Athens +30 210 3530000 (8am-8pm Mon-Fri)

Aegean Airlines: +30 28210 63366 (5am-11pm-Chania Airport)
or the main office in Athens +30 210 6261000 (06.00-20.00)

DEPARTURE DAY

We ask that you vacate by 10.00 am on the day of departure to facilitate cleaning/preparation in
readiness for the new arrivals. If you are in an apartment – you are welcome to leave your cases
in the reception/lobby area until it is time to leave for the airport.

Villa Departures: as you can appreciate the cleaners/gardeners & pool maintenance people will
turn up on the day of your departure in the morning to get it prepared for the new arrivals, if on
the same day. If there isn’t an arrival on the same day, there may be some alteration to the time
of departure, if it can be re-arranged prior with the cleaners etc depending upon their schedules.

Please leave the keys for the accommodation where you have been instructed (usually in the
door of the accommodation- unless specified otherwise).

Page 61

NO LIQUIDS IN HAND LUGGAGE

We all know the rules… liquids must be in a sealed plastic bag- or in the hold
luggage that will be checked in. Please pack wisely before you get to the
airport. Plus, the charter airlines have been enforcing the 20kg limit of checked
luggage. The charge for excess baggage is €8 per kilo over the limit for some
airlines.

LEFT LUGGAGE

There is a left luggage at the Heraklion airport, just left of the traffic lights as you enter the
grounds. (see Map 29) This is a 24 hour service in the summer months.
Unfortunately at Chania airport there isn’t a left luggage service. Once you’ve packed your
car with luggage we advise that you keep an eye on it if you make any stop offs on the way to
the airport. One particular place to spend a few hours is at Marathi Beach, which is not too
far from the airport & it is all relatively close to keep an eye on the car. Plus there are trees so
it will be in the shade. There are some good tavernas right on the beach as well.

GETTING BACK TO THE AIRPORT

Passengers are usually advised to arrive at the airport 2 hours before
departure time, which is when the check-in opens. Since all passengers for all
flights have to pass security checks before, we suggest getting there at least
2 ½ hours prior. Sometimes this means that you may have to wait in a
standstill queue – but at least you will be at the head of the queue. A good
time to get organized and have tickets and passports ready.
There is a bus service that runs from the airport to Chania & return several
times per day, €2,50 one way & takes 30 mins. See their website for the specific times as they
are not the same each day. They may change as well so it is best to get the up to date
information from the website below:

http://www.e-ktel.com/en/2-uncategorised/70-pros-aerodromio

TAXIS

If you have a prepaid taxi transfer back to the airport, the time of pick up will be advised once you
have arrived. If you have any queries regarding the pick-up time please contact Diana’s Travel on
the day before to sort out any changes or to confirm the time.

If you have not pre-booked a taxi transfer, you can book one locally by calling Diana’s Travel a
few days before your departure.
If, in the unlikely event that your prepaid taxi does not turn up within 15 minutes after the booked
time, please contact Diane on her mobile.

The taxi will drop you off right outside the airport departure entrance (Chania or Heraklion).

Page 62

CAR HIRE RETURNS

Ensure you have checked the petrol amount so that you have left it as it was when you received

the car. Look through the car to ensure you haven’t left any personal

belongings in it.

A representative of the car hire firm is usually outside when you arrive at

Chania or Heraklion airport to depart. It is best to drive up to the building and

drop off your luggage. If the representative is not there to collect the car, please park it

and leave the keys as advised when you received the car.

Note that for Heraklion drop offs with Kreta/Lato- please leave the car in the car park
locked and hand the keys to the parking attendant at the kiosk. See the Heraklion Map 29 for
locations.

CHANIA AIRPORT

(See Map 28)
Upon arrival at the airport- check the Departures screen for the counter that you need
to be checking in on, note – do not get that number confused with the gate number –
the gate number applies to the departures lounge!

The airport building is relatively small and usually one or two check-in desks are open for
each flight. Please have your tickets & passports ready in your hand luggage at the check-in.
Unfortunately not everyone on the plane can have window seats, but the staff try their best
not to break up parties, especially those with young children. It is advisable to get there early
as the new security measures at the check-in seem to take a while. All hold luggage is
weighed and tagged, then once you have been allocated seats and hold luggage tagged you
have to go to the scanner queue with all the other flights and put the luggage on that belt to
be scanned and then it goes out of sight down the belt.

After checking in it is best not to go through to the departures lounge until the flight has
arrived. Check the arrivals screen for the time of arrival which will give you indication of the
time that you should be through to the departures lounge. Usually it is 1 hour before you
depart that they start to call the flight for boarding. Note that any wheelchair assistance
passengers who cannot walk a short distance need to be at the gate – and as wheelchairs
are limited in Chania airport, they usually take the passengers to the gate and sit them in a
chair til boarding time. Once you have gone through to the departure lounge you cannot
come out again.

There are refreshments and light snacks available in the airport either before or after the
departures hall. As there is limited seating generally at the airport, we suggest that after
check-in you go to the taverna just outside the airport entrance by the Shell petrol station.
There is usually sufficient seating and they have a wider selection of snacks. Plus they have
pc’s with internet access which is coin operated & free wifi service if you have your own
device. So just sit back and enjoy the last bit of Cretan sunshine and watch the planes come
and go. But don't get too relaxed; make sure you know what time to be back at the departure
lounge.

HERAKLION AIRPORT

(See Map 29)
Here is a helpful hint to get to the airport without driving through the actual town of Heraklion:
on the highway look out for the Knossos exit & Heraklion Town, continue on the highway and
it is the 2nd exit after the Knossos/Heraklion exit. There is a smallish sign ‘Airport’, taking you
under the Highway and headed directly towards to the Airport building. To get to a parking
spot, turn left at the traffic lights & then turn left at the roundabout into the parking area (if you
have a Kreta/Lato car). To drop off cases & some of the part closer to the building, go straight
at the lights. The parking areas aren’t too far from the building, so it might be easier to park &
then walk across.
The airport is a bit larger and a lot more congested than Chania airport. As they have more
flights they usually have more than one check-in desk open at a time. To find out where
you're checking in, go inside to the international departures and look for your flight number,
which will be displayed on one of the screens. If it is not shown when you arrive at the airport
it may be that you are a little bit early. Once you find your check-in desk, find the end of the
queue. Sometimes you may have to queue to scan hold luggage first and then queue to
check-in.
There will not be a representative of Freelance at Heraklion airport, but there are plenty of
staff in the foyer to ask for information if need any assistance.
