NOTES FOR THE
CHANIA WALK
Walking the streets in the old part of Chania is a must whilst you are here. It is just fascinating to see
the layers of history from the Minoans to the Byzantine era followed by the Venetians for 465 years &
then the Turkish occupation for over 278 years & unfortunately a lot was damaged from the bombings
in WWII.
I am not a historian nor an archaeologist, I just love the town I live in & want to ensure you see as much
as you can, as your time on the island is limited. If you want more information about any of the stops
look it up in a guide book or online. Alternatively you can purchase Tony Fennymore’s, companion
booklet for his Walking Tour of Chania from my office.
The walk takes about 3 hours without going into any of the museums & not including the walk out to the
lighthouse ⓱, which is optional & probably one of the best places to take a photo of the harbour with
the White Mountains in the background. Nor does this include seeing all the sub-point which have ‘a’ –
b – c’ after the number, these are also of interest, but it just depends on how much time you wish to
spend in town. You can pick & choose as you go.
There are public toilets (male/female blue & white symbol on the map) to the right of the Agora ❾ as
you are facing the clock, down by the harbour (between 14c &⓲ point) & near point ❹ on Zambeliou
Str. Note some are Eastern style (squat only), which means there are no seats & probably more
hygienic, if you think about it.
Once you come through the Leather lane ❽, Skirdlof Str, you will see a square on the left with several
cafes & eating establishments, if you need a rest from the sun or just to take in the atmosphere.
Also inside the Agora ❾ are a couple of places that serve food, it is inexpensive & fresh, lots of locals
around & interesting environment to watch people.
One of my personal favourites is the Glymidakis Bakery inside the Agora, which I used to get cheese
pies from back in 1986 when I first came to Crete. Going to the Agora was a regular thing back then, as
there weren’t any supermarkets as such & that is where you had to go to get fresh milk which was then
delivered three times a week. Back then, in the winter if the sea was too rough for the boats to come
from Athens, there wouldn’t be any milk until the weather permitted the boats to leave.
Ensure you take a left in the center of the Agora to come out to the front of it to feel the hustle & bustle
of the modern town & to take the photo at the front of the market which is more picturesque then the
other three entrances.
The street with the minaret ❿ has some super tavernas & near Splanzia ⓫, there are several eating
places & lots of atmosphere in the evenings, as it is popular with the locals. The Well of the Turk
Restaurant is off of this street as well, if you fancy a bit of Eastern food (in the evenings only). Also on
Daskalogianni street is a daytime place called Kitchen E.Π.Ε which serves really good traditional
Cretan dishes.
Of course, there are several places to sit & drink or eat on the harbour front. One of my favourite ice
cream stops is Papa George for a soft serve ice cream with or without being dipped into chocolate.
Sometimes you will see exhibitions of art or photography in the Grand Arsenal (14c) & the same with
the mosque in the harbour ⓲.
At point 15b, there is a small park with benches overlooking the sea & to the left you will see the area
of Koum Kapi. Along here are several cafés & ouzeris day or night that run along the seafront.
Check the opening hours of the museums on page 57 if you plan on visiting them. Note that when the
Nautical/Naval Museum ⓳ is closed you cannot get into the (19a) Firkas Fortess & go up to the tower
⓴ to take in the view of the harbour.
Have a lovely time & enjoy your stay on Crete, no matter what you do! Diane
