Whenthebananaplantationsreplacedsugarproduction,itevenhadaporttofacilitatebananaexport.Originallycalled“Guayguata”bytheTainos,
AnnooBay(sonamedbecausealotofachiote/annaoplantsgrewthere)ishometohistoricalsitessuchastheveryfirstBaptistChurchbuiltin
St.Mary,(1824).Thoughnowjustashadowofwhatitusedtobe,AnnooBaystilloffersscenicviewsandishometomanyfarmersandfishermen.

someevenstoretheirgarbageandfaithfullyawaitSundaymorningwhenthewell-knownandunique‘perp-perp-perp!’soundtugson
theirsears.‘Digiabijchuck!’someshoutaskidsrunquicklydownsteephillsidesinanefforttorelaytheirwell-packagedwaste.
Onadaywhenmanyareathomewiththeirfamiliesrestingandenjoyingtheirtraditional,tastySundaydinner,theseGarbagemenof
theJunctionroutealwayspolitelygreetonewithasmile.Thoughattimesrunningbehindthemovingtruck,whilegrabbing,emptying
andreplacinggarbagebins,theyalwaysfindthetimetohaveasmallconversation.Maybeonethatmakestheirdayasmuchasthatof
thepersontowhom theyspeak.
Theirjobisquitechallenging.Theirtaskismadeevenharder,asbasicandnecessaryprotectivegearsarelacking,resultinginthem
workinginclothingmadedirtybyourrefuse.andonthewhole,greatlyriskingtheirhealthandeventheirlives.
GarbageCollectorsaresupposedtohavecoveralls,goggles,nose-mouthmasks,abacksupportbodybelt,goodqualityglovestohelp
preventcuts,reflectiveveststohelpotherdriversseethem duringtheveryearlyorlatehours,ahelmet,thick-soledrubberbootsand
earplugs.
Onehastoreallybeself-motivatedgiventhe“...verylow salaryanddifficultjobconditions”,Mr.MarcusNugent,oneoftheJunction
route’sSanitaryWorkersstatedastherainpoureddownonhim,whileheskilfullynavigatedaheavybin.
WorkingasaGarbageCollector/GarbageMan/SanitationWorkerisnotforthefaintofheartandthoughmanylookdownupon
thisprofession,itisafunctionthatisindispensibletosociety.Imaginehow thegeneralpublicreactswhenjustonetourofdutyis
missed.Imaginewhatthestreetslooklike-worse,whattheysmelllikeaswellasthegermsthathappilymultiply-afteramonthwith
outtheservicesoftheSanitationWorkers.
TheGarbageCollectorhastoworknon-traditionalhourssuchasearlymornings,sometimeslatenights.Physicalstrengthandself-
motivationareamustasonehastodoalotofliftingandworkoutdoorsinalltypesofweatherconditions.Especiallyindeveloping
countries,thereisateam whereonepersondrivesandtheothersmanuallypickupthegarbage.Mostdevelopedcountrieshave
automatedtruckswhichwiththepressofabutton,replacesmuchofthemanualworkwithuseofamechanicalarm.Thegarbageor
refusethatisthrownintothetruckiscompactedthentakentoadesignateddepositsitewhereitissorted.
GarbageCollectors,wesaluteyouforbeingproudofyourprofessionandforkeepingatitdespitethehardshipsandrisks.

TodayontheInternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen-IencourageyoutomakeasimplepledgeLet’s
pledgetotreateachwomanandgirlinthesamewayaswewouldwishforourgrandmothers,ourmothers,oursistersand
ourdaughterstobetreated.Ifwetreatedeachotherasweshould-aswewouldwishtobetreatedourselves-Ibelievewe
wouldnothavethemajorchallengethatwehaveinJamaicaandacrosstheworldwithviolenceagainstwomenandgirlsor
violenceagainstmenandboys.
Dealingwiththiscrime-whichisamajorevilinourworldtoday-requiresactionfromallofus.
Governmenthasaroletoplay;andgovernmentmustlead.Thecommunityhasaroletoplay.Thechurchhasaroletoplay.
But,mostimportantly,eachofusinourindividualcapacitieshasaroletoplay.
Thefirststepineliminatingtheviolence,beginswitheachofus.Whenweallsaythatenoughisenough;whenwesaythatthe
violencemustend;whenwetakeastandagainstviolenceandoffernocomforttoperpetrators;whenweexposethem;when
westopturningablindeyetothegender-violencethatweknowgoesonnextdoor;whenwecreateaculturethatpromotes
aharmoniousworldinwhichmenandwomenlivetogetherwithgenderequality;whenweareseriousaboutstoppingit,the
violencewillend.
Statistics(state)thatoneoutofeverythreewomenwillbecomeavictimofviolence.
Andcertainly,weeachknowatleastonewomanorgirlwhohassufferedorissufferingtheviolence.
ThelatestfiguresfromthePoliceshowtheextentoftheproblemthatwefaceinJamaicatoday.Thepolicereportthat
betweenJanuarylastyearandFebruaryofthisyear:
150womenweremurdered
263womenwereshot
530womenwereraped
511girlsundertheageof16reportedsexualviolationsand
370womenexperiencedotherformsofsexualviolations. DW
Jamaica,wehavetodobetterthanthis!Peoplewillnotcommitanoffenceiftheybelievethattheywillbecaughtandpunished.
Whileweasgovernmentandlegislatorshavebeenenactingandamendinglawstoprotectvictimsandpunishperpetrators...
weareveryawarethatthesuccessofthemeasureswilldependonyourcommitmenttohelpcatchthemandputthemaway.
Fortoolong,toomanyofthemen(andwomen)whocommitsexualassault,domesticviolence,relationshipabuse,sexual
harassment,andsexualabuseofchildrenareabletogetawayscotfree.Theybullytheirvictims.Buttheyalsodependonus
-wholikecroniesoraccessoriestotheircrimes-willseeandblind,hearanddeaf!
Letusnolongerbeenablersoraccessoriestotheviolence;letuscommittoreportingactsofviolenceagainstoursisters.

Poinsettia(Euphorbiapulcherrima)
AtChristmastimethebeautifulPoinsettiaburstsintobloom.Thisplantisoriginallyfrom Mexicoandcangrow upto10feet
high.Therearered,pinkandwhitevarieties.Theflamingleavesarenottherealflowersbutbractsthatsurroundthetiny
flowersinthecentre.
ChristmasCandlestick(Leonotisnepetifolia)
ThisplantisalsoknownastheBaldBush.TheChristmasCandlestickisanerectannualherbapproximately1-2metershigh.
Itisarathercommonweedandisfoundgrowingonroadsidesandwastegrounds.Theplantflowersallyearroundbut
bloomsaremainlyseeninOctobertoMarch.TheChristmasCandlestickisanativetoTropicalAfricaandisnow commonly
foundintheWestIndies.ItisusedinfloralarrangementsyearroundbutespeciallysoatChristmaswhenthedriedsprigsare
sprayedandusedinChristmasdecorations.
ChristmasPop(Turbinacorymbosa)
TheChristmasPopisascramblingtwinerwithslenderstems.Theyarecommonlyseengrowingonwalls,fences,shrubsand
trees.Theflowerhaswhitepetalswithagreycolourationatthebaseontheoutsideofthepetalsandadarkpurple-red
colourontheinside.Italsohasahighfragrance.
TheMaypolePlant(Agavesobolifera)
Agavesaresucculentplantsthatcanbefoundinwell-drainedhillsidesandhasalargerosetteofthick,fleshyleavesgenerally
endinginasharppointandwithaspinymargin.Thestoutstem isusuallyveryshortandtheleavesapparentlyspringfrom
theroot.Theygrow slowlyandfloweronlyonceafteranumberofyearswhen atallstem or“mast”growsfrom thecentre
oftheleafrosettebearingalargenumberoftubularflowersthataregoldenyellow tolightorangeincolour.Traditionally,
thismast–themaypole–wasusedinJamaicaasaChristmastree.
WhiteChristmas(Euphorbialeucocephala)
IncontrasttotheflamingcolourofthePoinsettiaatChristmas,wecanseethepeacefulwhitebractsofthisplant.The
aromaticflowerattractsinsectsforpollinationandprovidesapleasingandmemorableChristmasscent.Alsofrom Central
America,ithasbecomeawelcomedpartofourChristmasheritage.
ThePeaceLily(Spathiphyllumsp)
ThePeaceLilyisapopularindoorplantthatoriginatedfrom therainforestfloorsofthetropicalregionsofAmericaand
SoutheastAsia.Flowersfirstappearwhentheplantismatureenoughandconsistsofalargewhitespathewithawhiteor
paleyellow spadix.Thepeacelilyrequireslittlewaterandsunlighttogrow.Manypeoplegivetheplantasagiftasitis
consideredanattractiveindoorplantandaspiritualsymbolofChristmas.Thereisalsoevidencethatthepeacelilyisgood
atcleaningindoorair.
Sugarcane
MostSaccharumvarietiesofsugarcaneflowerprofuselyfrom DecembertoFebruary.Thefeatheryflowersoflightpurpleand
silverywhiteappearattheendsofeachstem andareamagnificentsightastheyswayintheChristmasbreeze.Thesecane
stalks,orcaneflagsastheyareknown,aresometimescollected,sprayedandusedtodecoratethehome.
ChristmasTree(Cupressuslusitanica)
TheCupressuslusitanicaplantiswidelyusedbymanytoembracethisseasonofcelebrationinhomesandworkplaces.
TheCupressuslusitanicaplantisanevergreenplantthatwasintroducedtomanypartsoftheworldfrom Mexico.These
plantshaveahightolerancefordroughtconditionsandcanbefoundinwarm andsubtropicalareassuchasourforest
reserves.Didyouknow thattheChristmastreehasmedicinalbenefits?Theoilproducedfrom thebarkofthetreewhen

TheMaroons-Strengthpersonified-havehelpedtoshapenotonlyJamaica’srichhistorybutalsoitsfuture.
Thename“Maroon”possiblycomesfromtheSpanishword“Cimarrones”whichmeans“wild”or“untamed”.
ThoseinJamaicaaresaidtohaverunawayfromslaveryandthenfoughtagainstoppressionandtoretaintheir
freedom.Thismarkedthebeginningoftheeventualendoftheslavetrade.Thefirstslaveswerebroughtto
JamaicabytheSpaniardswhosuccumbedtotheBritishinvasion.The“TriangularTrade”thencameaboutwhere
(WestCoast)AfricanswerebroughttotheCaribbeanbytheBritishtoworkonplantations.Sugar,tobaccoand
coffeewereproducedandshippedtoEngland.Arms,brandyandtextileswerethensentbacktoAfricatobuy
moreslavesandthecyclecontinued.Possiblywouldhavecontinuedmuchlonger,hadtheMaroonsnotrisenup
andresisted.
Thisspecialgroupofhighlyself-sufficientpeoplewhoneverhestitatedtogivetheirlivesintheirfightforfreedom
andindependencestillexistinJamaicatoday,despitehundredsoftheirancestorsbeingdeportedbacktoAfrica
bytheBritishrulers,inanefforttosuppressthem.Aproud,resilientandhighlycreativegroupthatisabletolive
atonewithNature,theircommunitiesarelocatedintheparishesofPortland(MooreTownandCharlesTown),
St.Mary(ScottsHallMaroonTown),St.Elizabeth(Accompong)andSt.James(Flagstaff,formerlyTrelawnyTown)
KushuMaroonTown(ScottsHall),nestledinahillyforestsettingfromabout1793,isaccessedbymakingaleft
turnofftheJunctionrouteattheGrandyHoleintersection(about5minutesdrivedownfromCastletonGardens).
ItisnowheadedbyColonelRudolphPink,amanwhohasgonewaybeyondthecalltobeofservicetoothers.Son
andgrandsonofgreatKoromanteeleadersandteachers,hededicateshisenergiestocommunitybuildingand
personallyinvestsincreationofwell-neededinfrastructure,nothesitatingtobuildwithhisownhands.Asitethat
bringshistoryalive-perfectforSocialStudiesandHistorylessons-theScottsHallMaroonTownalsohasrich
musicaltraditionsandawiderangeofuniqueinstruments.TheHeritageTrailhighinthehillswithbreathtaking
views,goesrightbacktoCastletonGardensandinvitesoneforaquiterejuvenatingandeducationalNaturewalk.

Unfortunately,asisthestoryofmanyotherJunctioncommunities,theMaroonshaveawiderangeofskillsand
competencesbutlacktheopportunities/markettousetheirtalentstoenhancetheirsocio-economicstatus.
Andso,despitetheirproudhistory,theyarenowbirdswithclippedwingfeathers,limitedbyasadcyclewith
mosttrappedbypoverty.Wecanhelpthemandbydoingso,helpthemtohelptheirchildren.
Together,letusbuildcommunity,buildcountry.
