Herselfhailingfrom theDevonPencommunityandapaststudentof

thisverysameinstitution,shehasbeenateachersince1986.Shewas
drawntoteachingbecauseofherdeepdesiretohelpthosewhoareafraidto

hopeforbettersimplybecausetheyarefrom aruralareaorhaveapoorfamily

background.

Mrs.Harris-Burrell(whosaidthatitwasdifficulttofindotherswhowerepoorerthanherfamily)herselfneverhadthe

luxuryofeverattendinghighschool.However,throughdeterminationandyearsofhardwork,shegotintoandacedboth

collegeanduniversity.

Believingthat“withChristinthemidst,nothingcanpreventone’sachievements”andliving“togeteachandeverychild

torealizehis/herdreams/goals”,Mrs.Harris-Burrellhasnow spenttwenty-fivememorableyearsbuildinglivesand

communityviaengagementattheDevonPenPrimaryandInfantSchool.

Sheusesherachievementstoalwaysencouragebothparentsandstudentstocontinuallybelieveinthemselvesasnoone

canmakethem achievewithouttheirowneffort.

Beingschoolprincipalisnoeasytaskbutitisaveryfulfillingjobwhichallowsonetoliterallyseeandbeproudofthe
fruitsoftheirlabour,especiallyaftermanyyears.
Mrs.Harris-Burrell,theDevonPencommunitythanksyouforyourimprint-notjustontheirdailylives,butforyour
generousandpricelesscontributiontotheworldonthewhole.

MyGrandmotherisanupcycler.Now,whenIsay‘upcycler’Idonotmeanshepeddlesupsteep,windinghillsonaunicycle.WhatIdomeanisthatsheis
strictaboutreusingandrepurposingitemsthatmostpeoplethinkofasgarbageandjunk.Forexample,shereusesoldtiresforfashioningrainbarrelsandturns
plasticbottlesintodripirrigatorsforhergarden.
Iusedtobelievethatshesufferedfrom acompulsivedisorderandgrew upexpectingatanymomenttoseeherfeaturedonanepisodeofA&E’sHoarders!
WhydoIsaythis?Well,whatwouldyouthinkifyousawsomeoneusingbrokengardenpotsforaccentsinheryard,andemptywinebottlesforlightfixtures?
Shewoulddescribeherselfasresourcefulorfrugal,butIdidnotthinkthatwasthecase.
EverytimeIwouldvisitshewouldtrytoeducatemeaboutupcycling,preservingtheplanet,andsavingmoney.Herexhortationswould,ofcourse,fallon
deafears.Whykeepandreuseoldstuffwhennew andbetterproductswerealwaysbeingdeveloped?Whynotusethelatesttechnologytosolveour
problems?
LastsummerbeforeIreturnedtoschoolshegavemeagiftofabeautifulschoolbag.Iproudlycarriedthebagtoschooluntiloneofmyclassmatesdiscovered
thelabelfrom apairofJeansontheinside.IthenrealizedthatithadonlybeentheJeansthatIhadoutgrownwhichhadbeenupcycled.
Anyways,anincidentoccurredlastsummerthatforcedmetoview hereccentricitiesinadifferentlight.Ialwaysspentsomeofmysummervacationswith
heratherlittlefarm inthehillsofClarendonattheedgeoftheCockpitCountry.Ididnotalwaysenjoythis‘vacation’asIwaspressedintoserviceonthe
farm andintonumerousupcyclingprojects.Thismeantlesstimeforvideogamesandsocialmedia,twoofthebestaspectsofmodernlife.
WhenwearrivedIimmediatelyrealizedthatGrandmawasnothappy."GrandmaMyrtle,what’sup?”Ienquired.
"Goinsideandmakeyourselfcomfortable.Therearesomecookiesandmilkonthecoffeetable.Iwillsoontellyouallaboutit”shesaid.Attheentranceto
thehousewasahand-madematweavedfrom bananaleavessaying,"wastenot,wantnot”.Thecoffeetablewasadoorrestinghorizontallyonfourwooden

sticks.Ithadbeensandeddownandrepainted.Onthis'coffeetable'satajugofmilkwitDhaWnassortmentofcookiesbeside.Everywherearoundthesmall

housewereexamplesofrepurposingandreusing.
Afterindulging,IdecidedtovisitthechickencoopandlookformyGrandma’sprizedrooster,Ancry.Hewasafinebirdwithbeautifulplumageandaconfi-
dentgait.WhenIvisitedhewouldalwaysfollow mearoundtheyardlikeapuppy;however,Ithinkitwasmoretoestablishthattheyardwashisandthat
Iwasamereguest.WhatIdiscoveredwasnotachickencoopbutafortification,withbarbedwiresandspikesallaround.Ancrywasnolongerproudly
walkingaroundinhiskingdom,butwasperchedatopthecooplookinganxiousandagitated.Hisfeatherswereintattersasif
hehadbeenthroughashredder.Thehenswerenotwalkingaroundpeckingatthegroundbuthidinginthecoop.
GrandmaMyrtlecameupbesidemeandsaid:“EverynightafterIgotosleepsomeonecomestostealachicken,andAncryputsupagreatfight...butthe
thiefalwaysgetsoneintheend.HeissoslickthatwhenIwakeupheisgone!Ihavetriedeverythingpossible,buthealwaysgetsaway.Iwillsoonhaveno
chickensifthiskeepsup.”
Astheweekenddrew toanend,myfamilyandIpromisedtoreturnthefollowingweek.Fortheentireridehome,Iwasconflictedaboutthesituation,and
withadeterminationtofixtheproblem,IcontinuouslymulledoverinmymindwhatcouldIdotohelp.Bythetime,Isettledinathome,theideastruck
me.
Myfather’sofficewasdisposingofaboxofoldsmartphones.
Usingtheweektosettheplaninplace,IreturnedtoGrandmaMyrtle'shomewithanew vigor.
EarlySaturdaymorningIbegantinkering;knocking,connectingandputtinginplacemyingeniousplan.BynoonIhadassembledthenetworkofsmart-
phones.SatisfiedwithmyworkIwaitedpatientlytocatchtheculprit.
Onceagain,thatnight,thechickensweredisturbed,onlythistimewewerereadytocatchtheculprit.AsmyfamilyandIintentlywatchedthemonitor,what
wesaw flabbergastedus;ashortlongbodiedbrownfigureslitheredintothecagesandpouncedonthechickens.
"Amongoose!"Ishoutedbewildered.
Theatmosphereofthenextdaywasconvivial.MyfatherandIaidedmygrandmotherinrenovatingherchickencoop.Weusedmaterialsthatwerestored
away,thatIbelievedwasjunk,andcreatedaclosedsanctuaryforthechickens.
LaterthateveningIturnedtoherandsaid:"Grandmadoyouknow youcultivatemorethanplantshere?"
"Whatdoyoumeanbythat,"shereplied
"Youcultivategreenbehavior,"Isaid

attheageof12andthentotheU.S.A.in1973wherehisparentspassedonsome35yearslater.
Mr.RobertSmellie,atthistimeanentrepreneurafterhavingworkedatvariousjobs,reallybegantomissJamaicaand
movedbackhomeforgoodin2012afterhavinglivedabroadfor39years.
ScottsHallwasnothow hewantedittobe:thereweretoomanyyouthsfrom ‘challengedbackground’whowere
deviatingandbecomingdelinquents.Theyneededsomeonetooffersupportandguidance;someonetohelpthem to
focustheirenergies.BobbyWhaleselflesslydecidedtobecomethatsomeoneandtheCaribbeanWrestlingEntertainment
groupwasborn.

Hisobjectiveofmakingthedifferencefortheseyouths,provingtothem that‘beingfrom thecountry’doesnotmeanthe
endoftheroad,hasresultedinhim buildingagym inScottsHall(opentoall).TheCWEgroupnowhas4femalesand14
maleswhoaretrainedtowrestle,educatedonhealthandnutrition,exposedtoawidevarietyofpeopleandculturesand
whoofcourse,now lookforwardtoabrighterfutureasaresultofthisgoldenopportunityofemploymentandself-
development.
Theyhavesofartraveled12ofthe14parishes,performingatleastonceeachmonthandhaveevenhadthePrimeMinister
asaudience.Theseyoungsters(whoserepertoirincludesperformingatagriculturalshowsinclusiveofDenbigh,now
believeinthemselves,areconfidentthattheycanmaketheneededdifferenceandrealizethatcircumstancescanchange
forthebetter.
Andstill,BobbyWhalecontinuesto‘buildmindandbody’andcreatebecauseforhim,communitiesarethepillarsof
countries.HecollaborateswiththePoliceandPolicaYouthClubtoensurethateventsgosmoothlyandworkswith
communitiestoraisefundsforthem.
Hisefforts-likeacandleinadarkshed-havenotgoneunseenandnow heisbeingassistedbyMr.ScottElliot,aPeace
CorpsVolunteer.Havingbeenfeaturedintelevision,radionandnewspaperinterviews,Mr.Smellieisnostrangerto
exposurebutashesays,thisdoesnotequatetoincomeforcontinueddevelopmentandgrowthofLocalEconomic
Initiative.
TheSocialDevelopmentCommittee(SDC),believingthat“sportsisaunifyingforceandacatalystforignitingtheenergies
ofindividualsandgroupswithincommunities”hassteppedupandofferedagreatlyappreciatedmonetarysponsorship.
Thisiscurrentlybeingusedtoupgradeequipmentandinfrastructure.
Assistancetoobtainapersonalmeansoftransportationisnow beingrequestedtofacilitatemovementofthegroupand
moreearningpossibilities.

TheobservationofEarthDaywasinitiatedbyHarvardLaw studentDennisHayesandSenator
GaylordNelsonin1970.Ithassincegatheredmomentum takingonaglobalperspective.

Jamaicaparticipatesannuallythroughcommemorativeactivitiesasitisauniqueopportunitytoraise
awarenessonkeyenvironmentalissuesamongpublicandprivatesectordecision-makersandthe
public,whilemobilizingallstakeholderstoworktogethertopreserveourcountry'snaturalenviron-
ment.

Thisyear’stheme”“From TrashtoCash”wasinfluencedbytheinternationalfocusonstoppingplastic
pollutionwithawideremphasisgiventomacro-wastefrom othersourcesaswell.

Itisimportanttoeducateouryouthabouttheharmfuleffectsofpollution.
Throughthiscompetition,weendeavouredtocreateaplatform forthem tocreativelyconceptualize
asolution forourwaste.How wedisposeofourwastecontaminatesourenvironmentwith
unwantedsubstancesandaffectsusinmanyways.StoppingpollutionisnecessaryforJamaica’s
survival.Turningourtrashintocash,changesthewaywethinkofrecycling.Thismodeofthinking
challengesustoformulateideas,businessesandprojectsthatareinnovationsforeconomicgain.Ifwe
canviewalternativewaystouseourwasteinasustainablemanner,wecouldmoveclosertoagreener
Jamaica.

Thecompetitionwasopentoallchildrenandyouthbetweenages12–19yearsattendingprimary
andsecondaryschools;youthattachedtocommunitybasedorganizations,churchesandalsoyouth
clubs.EligiblepersonswereaskedtosubmitoriginalindividualentriestotheLiteraryArts,Posterand
DesignModelcategories.Entrieswerejudgedonthepremisethatampleresearchhasgoneintowhat
isproducedandthewinnerswereannouncedandrecognizedattheannualEarthDayCompetition
AwardsCeremonyonFriday,April27,2018.

Inthisfeature(pleaseseepage5),wewillhighlightthewinningliterarypieceunderthesub-

theme:"Let'sCultivateGreenBehaviour:Let'sUpcycle!"writtenbyRachelBarham,agrade11student

oftheImmaculateConceptionHighSchool.Outofatotalofseventeen(17)literaryartspieces,Rachel

Barham emergedthewinnerwithacreativelycraftedshortstoryentitled,

Themulti-milliondollarroadimprovementprojectannouncedfortheJunctionrouteisnow infullswing.
Well-neededroadworkshavebeentakingplacefrom theGeorgiasectionoftheJunctionroutedowntoAgualta
Vale,withsomesectionsoftheroad beingwidened whilesomearebeingreplaced to cutdownonthe
numerouscorners.Despitethefactthatpropertiestooclosetotheroadarebeinglost,thegeneralpublicis
upbeatandlookingforwardtoexperiencingalessbumpyridewithshortertraveltimes.
AnotherlegoftheroadimprovementprojectisalsobeingdoneonupperConstantSpringRoadwhichleads
directlyuntotheJunctionroute.Theroadisbeingwidenedwiththeobjectiveofcuttingdownonthehours-
longtrafficjam duringmorningandeveningpeakhours.Thethousandswhotravelintothecapitaldailyviathe
Junction,leavingoutbeforesunriseandgetinghomeatbedtimewelcomethispromisingproject.

TheImportanceofGoodMentalHealth

TheMentalHealthUnitattheMinistryofHealthhasasloganthatforeverholdstrue:
“Thereisnohealthwithoutgoodmentalhealth”.
Whiletherehasbeengreaterawarenessofnon-communcablediseases(NCDs)suchashypertensonand
diabetes,manyareunawarethatthestateofourmentalhealthsignificantlycontributestothedevelopment,
preventonandtreatmentofNCDs.Globally,depressionandanxietyratesareontheriseandcommonly
contributetosicknessandabsencefrom schooloremployment.

Fartoooftenmentalwellnessisforgottenbymany,yethow wearedoingmentallyandemotionallyhas
far-reachingconsequencesforourphysicalhealth,oursociallivesandsomuchmore.
So,whatisgoodmentalhealth?How doweachieveit?

Goodmentalhealthisnotsimplytheabsenceofadiagnosableillnesslikeschizophreniaordepression,etc.Itishavingthe
abilitytocopewiththevarousstressesoflife,managechangeanduncertainty,learnandrealizeourfullpotential.

Thebenefitsofmentalwellnessincludereducedfeelingsofstress,agreatersenseofcalm,reducedmedicalcosts,increased
productivity,andisfundamentaltoourrelationshipsandachievinggoals.Allofuswillexperiencestrugglesfrom timetotime,
butgoodmentalhealthiswhatwillhelpusbounceback.Wemaystillfacesituationsbeyondourcontrol,butwecandosome-
thingaboutthestateofourmentalhealth.

Herearesometips:

*Talkaboutyourfeelings-talkingabouthow youfeeltoatrustedfamilymemberorfriendcanhelpyoucopeintimesof
difficulty.

*Keepactive-regularexerciseisshowntoimprovemood,concentrationandsleep.Asimpleactivitysuchastakingashort
walkcanimpactyourmentalhealth!

-Takeabreak-giveyourselfsome“metime”.Ensureyouscheduletimesofrestandrelaxation.Ashortbreakfrom studyingor
working,takingalunchbreak,orplanningaweekendtripoutoftown.Afew minutescanbeenoughtode-stressyouandhelp
youre-focusonthetasksyouhavetodo.

*Beanoptimist-thinkingpositivelyisaprovenwayofimprovingmood.Workonreframingnegativesituationsintopositive
ones.Lookattheseasopportunitiesforgrowth.

*Connect-keepintouchwithfriendsandfamilyandmaketimetoattendsocialevents.Socialisingwithothersisassociated
withincreasedmood.

*Eathealthy-Whatyoueatcanhaveadirecteffectonyourenergylevelandmood.Reducetheamountofsugar,caffeineand
alcoholandmakehealthierchoicessuchasalmonds,peanuts,bananas,greenteaetc.whichalllhelpwithenergywithoutthe

storyevenbeforethewordscameout.
Motherofateenagegirlwhowasimpregnantedbyabusconductor,shewasalmostatherwitsend.Shehadverylimited
resourcesandatightbudgetbutstilltriedtotakecareofboththedaughterandthegrandsonasthe‘baby-faadanaahgiv
arnutten,jus’buylikklejuicean’from timetotimesome“pampas”.
Whenaskedwhyshehadnotreportedthegirl’scasetothepolice,shepromptlyreplied,‘shedidalmos’16somineva
seewhedatmeksense.Harfaadanearlykillhardoahkaahwinevahexpeckatinglikedat!’.
Whenquestionedrethefatherandhispossibilitytocareforthechild,itcameoutthatitwasanolderperson,onewho
worksasabusconductorandonewhohasanumberofotherchildrenwithyounggirls.

Women-especiallythosefrom poorbackgroundsandlivinginruralareas-aresowrong!
Weliveinacountryregulatedbylawswhichareinplacetoprotectourrights.
Andyetweignoretheselaws(unlesswearephysicallyattacked)andhopetobebetterandsafer.
Inthiscase,thedaughterwasnotprotected.
Shewasgroomedandtakenadvantageofbysomeoneshewasfamiliarwith,havingtraveledonthebusdailytoandfrom
school.
Then,asachildwhobecamepregnant,shewasnotprotecedbyherparentswhoshouldhavereportedtheincidentas
‘individualsaged15oryoungerinJamaicaarenotlegallyabletoconsenttosexualactivity,andsuchactivitymayresult
inprosecutionforstatutoryrape”.
Inaddition,beingtheoneswhoarelegallyresponsibleforcaringforheruntilatleastage18,theparentsagainfailedher
innotapplyingtotofamilycourtforaMaintenanceOrder.Thefactthattheydonothingwithregardstothelackofmain-
tenancebythefatherofthechildgivestheideathathisactionsareacceptedandnotcontested.Anycare-giverwho
wilfullyignorestheneedsofachildisguiltyofneglect,whichisaform ofchildabuse.
Bydefault,anypersonwhoallowsthstohappen/continue,giventhat,

Whenpressedretheinvolvementofthefather,shesaid‘midawtamekamistakean’ahopeshewilearnfram itan‘pick
upharself.Dibaby-faada,ahjus’lefhim totime.’
Why?Why‘leavehim totime’whenthechildwasasmuchhisashers?
Hetoohadanobligation,aresponsibility.Yetthegirlwasbeingcounselledtojustbearitandhangonwhilehegalivanted
andthechildremainedinneedofsomanythings.
Inadditiontothepreviousformsofabuse,she(andherparents)werebeingabusedfinanciallywhilethechildwasbeing
neglected.Andhermotheronlysaw thatsheneeded‘tostandstrongandworkharder’and‘justignoretheman-hewill
getwhatiscomingtohim.’

Especiallyduringtheseyearscharacterisedbydrasticphysiologicalandpsychologcaldevelop-
ment,confusingemotions,theneedto‘fitin’andaddedpressuresfrom thosewhokeepsaying
‘yuhgettingbignow,soyuhcan/yuhmust...’tweenstoteensarehighlyatrisk.
Researchhasproventhatthe6-15agegrouparethemostabusedbutthisisnottheironly
problem.

Humantrafficking,alsoviewedas‘moderndayslavery’hassurpassedtheillegalsaleof

armsandwillsurpasstheillegalsaleofdrugsinthenextfew years,asvictimscanbeabused
overandover.
Morewomenandgirls(approximatedat80percent)aretraffickedthanboysandmen,andthe
averageageofvictimsisinthe11-14range.Those‘enslaved’haveanaveragelifespanofjust
7years.
“Childrenareoftentargetedbytraffickersastheyaredeemedeasiertomanipulatethanadults.
Moremoneycanbeearnedbyyoungergirlsandboysexploitedinsexualexploitation,espe-
ciallyvirgins.Pre-pubescentgirlsarereportedto beinjectedwithhormonesto bringon
puberty.Youngergirlsareexpectedtohaveagreaterearningpotential,andassucharein
greaterdemand”.

“Jamaicaisasource,transit,anddestinationcountryforwomenandchildrentraffickedforthe
purposesofsexualexploitationandforcedlabor.ThemajorityofvictimsarepoorJamaican
womenandgirls,andincreasinglyboys,whoaretraffickedfrom ruraltourbanandtourist
areasforcommercialsexualexploitation.Victimsaretypicallyrecruitedbypersonscloseto
them ornewspaperadvertisementspromotingworkasspaattendants,masseuses,ordancers;
afterbeingrecruited,victimsarecoercedintoprostitution.Jamaicanchildrenalsomaybe
subjectedtoconditionsofforcedlaborasdomesticservants.”

DuringthemonthofMay,specialemphasisisplacedonourchildren.Letusplacethisspecial
emphasisonthem everydayandtakeavow toprotectthem from allharm anddanger.
Asparentsandcommunitymembers,thisisourduty;notsellingthem toadvanceourselves.
LetusactivelyengageintheBlueHeartCampaignandsavethefuture.

-TheBlueHeartCampaignisaglobalawarenessraisinginitiativetofighthumantrafficking
anditsimpactonsociety.

-Itseekstoencourageinvolvementfrom governments,civilsociety,thecorporatesectorand
individualsalike,toinspireactionandhelppreventthisheinouscrime.

-TheBlueHeartisincreasinglyrecognizedastheinternationalsymbolagainsthumantraffick-
ing,representingthesadnessofthosewhoaretraffickedwhileremindingusofthecold-heart-
