UNIT 3

(Let’s Learn Grammar)

Learning Objectives:
After learning about the grammar, the
students are expected to be able to apply
the grammar to writing descriptive text

46

in unit 2 we have also learned about vocabulary to describe
people, animals, things and places. Now, in unit 3 we will learn

about the grammar structure used in writing descriptive text.

Simple Present Tense

In writing descriptive text, we use the simple present tense.
Then what is meant by simple present tense? The simple present tense
is a verb tense with two main uses. We use the simple present tense
when an action is happening right now, or when it happens regularly (or
unceasingly, which is why it’s sometimes called present indefinite)

In writing descriptive text, of course, we will later describe
something sentence by sentence. so from that we will also learn
various kinds of sentences. There are 2 sentences: verbal sentence
and nominal sentence.

A. Verbal Sentence

Verbal sentences are sentences that have a finite verb as a
predicate. Finite verbs, also known as main verbs or verbs, are main
verbs that must match the subject and tenses.

Some examples of finite verbs are read (membaca), sleep
(tidur), watch (menonton), study (belajar), run (berlari), work (bekerja),
and so on.

Example:
- He works in the office
- She like reading a novel

B. Nominal Sentence

Nonverbal sentences are sentences whose predicate is not a
