In Memoriam

We fondly remember our revered Mother,
Smt. Meenakshi Balakrishnan, whose exemplary leadership and
selfless service made an immense difference to our world.

In her footsteps, we follow.

Director’s Message

Dear Children and Parents,

The year 2020 will be etched in our minds forever.
History has taught us about epidemics we conquered
as a world. Reading them, we have often marveled
about human resilience and courage yet never in our
wildest dreams did we ever imagine that the world
we know and love would one day be pummeled by a
pandemic like Corona, that the old ways of living we
know and love would need to undergo such drastic
changes, that we, much like the heroes we read about
in history, would also rise to the occasion with
courage and fortitude.

Overnight, our lives transformed. Children stopped coming to schools, we
feared stepping out of homes and our professional lives barged into our
domestic ones, changing definitions of holidays, and working hours,
overwriting boundaries. Yet, through it all, we kept hoping. We hoped the
nightmare would go away in a few months, we hoped the world would heal in
no time at all, that children’s merry laughter would fill our halls once again and
the simple joys that we had taken for granted would once again come back.
Days passed into weeks and weeks into months. A whole year is over now and
yet there is no sign of the dark clouds lifting. A surge in cases since March 2021
has once again made it difficult for us to decide when we will reopen.

This constant state of uncertainty poses enormous challenges to us as an
institution. As teachers move to online platforms to instruct, and young
students stay glued to their screens to learn, we applaud their joint efforts yet
worry about the reach of the virtual classrooms. This remains especially true
for our young students in Nursery and the Primary section where several
videos are being uploaded and we are not sure whether the content is being
absorbed by the young minds. We, as a school, as a microcosm of the society,
must meet head on this challenge in the coming years – bridging the learning
gaps that are being created as the pandemic rages on.

Today, I wish to congratulate the teaching fraternity whole-heartedly. They
rose to the challenge earnestly, facing the crisis with an immense optimism
and enthusiasm. They were at once teachers and students- relearning new
ways of lesson delivery on one hand and implementing the newly-learnt tools
on the other to create engaging content every day. Every single teacher worked
tirelessly to facilitate learning, to bring the classroom as much as possible to

every child’s home. The Kumarans Group of Institutions is blessed with
proactive Principals, Academic Coordinators and experienced senior staff who
shouldered their responsibilities admirably, constantly supporting the
teachers, helping them adapt to this new learning environment and steering
them towards achieving the targets.

Students, who are the heart of the whole enterprise, need to be applauded even
more today. Being on the computer for hours on end, taking notes online,
working out problems incessantly without the comfortable presence of peers
and teachers all around is no mean feat. The young ones, especially had to
remain content with only the videos uploaded and it is heartbreaking for us as a
school, when they keep telling us “we miss our school, we miss our teachers,”
and we can only helplessly listen.

The deep core values of our 62 year-old institution continue to guide our
students today as they molded and shaped generations of students in the past.
Even today when old students come to visit us, it gives me great joy to hear
them talk about these same values of integrity, discipline, honesty and humility
that were instilled in them as children and that continue guide them in their
adult lives. As we always say, Kumarans is not merely a school to transact a
curriculum, it is an institution which provides foundations for life. This year we
have completed 25 years of our successful foray into ICSE and CBSE
curriculums and though the pandemic has kept us from celebrating our
journey, it remains my pledge that nothing at all, not even a life-transforming
year as this one, will deter us from catalyzing our commitment to a more
compelling vision, more impactful teaching-learning experiences and higher
performance standards.

Principal’s Message

Dear Students and Parents,

Greetings and trust all of you are keeping well.

This academic year, we were caught in a
pandemic of epic proportions and things we
took for granted were no longer possible. To say
that this academic year has been one of great
change and turbulence would be an
understatement.

We didn’t, in our wildest dreams, imagine that
schools could function online and teachers
could work from home.

The pandemic hit us hard and all of us were left confused and wondering how we
would adapt and cope.

But as the quote goes “It takes courage to let go of the familiar and embrace the
new.”

And adapt we did.

Teachers let the classrooms enter their homes, transitioned from real to virtual,
and became familiar with screen sharing and whiteboards.

While we missed the human touch and the social interaction, we adapted and did
the best we could under the circumstances.

We owe a huge shout out to all the teachers who adapted to technology and
ensured that the learning didn’t stop. We are forever indebted to our teachers for
learning new techniques and delivering the lessons online.

This transition to online teaching learning was planned and implemented
smoothly thanks to the support and vision of our Management, headed by our
Director Mrs Deepa Sridhar. Under her guidance, we chose a platform which
ensured that students had safe and secure access to the digital content provided.
We are grateful to her for her unstinted support and counsel.

We realize that it has been a major upheaval for the children too and things like
playing a game or reaching out to greet their friends was not possible.

While it may look like a long struggle, we need to look back at history to put our
struggles in perspective. The first war of Independence was in 1857 and we got
our Independence in 1947-all along there was continuous struggle and fight to
make India independent.

Such patience and determination, shown by our forefathers-.Think about it..

We keep cribbing about petty issues all the time- or when things do not happen
instantly to our satisfaction.

We feel we are in the midst of the pandemic and its end is not in sight. All I can
say, children, is stay patient, do what needs to be done and it will soon pass. Do
not let go of hope, courage and fortitude. We have made giant strides in the
fight against the pandemic – vaccinations are available, soon many more forms
of vaccines are to roll out. So all we need to do is follow the
necessary protocols and stay optimistic about the future- this too shall pass.

We thank all the parents for being supportive of the children. Enabling online
classes for the children at home would not have been easy and to manage this
along with balancing their own careers would have been a tough act to do.

We were hoping to see children back in campus from the beginning of the next
academic year, but with the rising number of cases now in March, we will adopt
a wait and watch policy and decide how to bring students back to school safely.

Hoping to see you all back in school soon and waiting to experience the hustle
and bustle of school with the ringing sounds of laughter and cheer of the
students and teachers.

Till then we would like all of you to stay safe healthy and never lose hope that
things will get better.

I leave you with the quote by Roy T. Bennett:
“Never lose hope. Storms make people stronger and storms never last forever.”

“Courage is not the absence of fear but the realization that something is more important than
fear”

COVID exhaustion can mainly be traced back to the fact that the socially responsible ones
amongst us are bearing the brunt of those who are not.

A lot of people are going about their lives unperturbed - either oblivious to or overwhelmed
by the weight of the expectation on them (to keep good hygiene and maintain distance
while wearing their good old masks) or in complete denial of the pandemic itself whilst
disregarding the reality that they are protected majorly because of the herculean efforts of
the front-line workers. It is like manning the Titanic in foreign waters and trying to steer it
away from the approaching iceberg while having our ribs tickled by those who either can't
see the iceberg or have given up because "we will get hit anyway".

Either way, all of our lives are not anywhere as easy as they used to be before COVID.

We cannot nonchalantly walk into the streets, grocery stores, etc., unfazed by the lack of
hand sanitizers or tissues at our disposal, nor practice our customized handshake with our
friends. However, the worst of these changes, in these trying times, is the fact that we did
not get to go to our temple of knowledge and nourishment- Sri Kumaran Public School, for
a huge fraction of this academic year and for some of us not at all.

Nevertheless, we are fortunate to have all our classes online due to the commendable effort
by our teachers, which every day gives us a tiny glimpse back to our regular school days.
Regardless of the physical barriers and limitations, our teachers have covered all the
essential school programs gracefully, ensuring we all have had the opportunity to get
through this year with ease. Likewise, the school has blessed us with the opportunity to
continue with the publishing of our school’s treasure trove- The Gnanamanthanam, in the
never-before-seen E-magazine form.

COVID has hindered many possibilities and withheld many events, but our school has
continued to flourish and grow in multiple directions. It implores students to find solace,
stay motivated, and make the best of the lock-down. And as always, the Gnanamanthanam
is the pinnacle of every academic year encompassing the talents, achievements, and
persistent memories of all Kumaranites. We are all in this together!

We have taken utmost care in the compilation of this magazine, any error or discrepancy is
inadvertent and purely unintentional.

Hence, hold on to the Kumaran camaraderie in your hearts as the SEEK team presents to
you, a very extraordinary edition of the esteemed Gnanamanthanam.

Happy reading...
