Job Description

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
In 2007, Hispanics Inspiring Students’ Performance and Achievement (HISPA) was founded
with a mission to mobilize Latino professionals to speak in schools as role models for Latino
youth. HISPA’s key program, the HISPA Role Model Program (HRMP), began in 2008 in New
Jersey. HRMP sends role models to public schools with majority Latino enrollment (85% of
students in the HMRP program are Latino), targeting grades 5 through 9.

Over the school year, students participate in three aspects of the program:
1. 12 different role models make six visits to HRMP students in a given
school (six visits per year, two role models per visit),
2. Students visit one of the role model’s organizations, and
3. Students and role models participate in a youth conference at an
institution of higher education. Role models share their personal
journeys and professional careers while emphasizing the importance of
higher education. HRMP role
models represent diverse careers: business, STEM, Social
Sciences/Humanities (e.g. education, law, health care).

Program Description
HISPA’s mission is to build the pipeline of Latinos in higher education by mobilizing Latino
role models to inspire students' academic achievement. HISPA has 3 goals: 1) unite Latino
students and role models who emphasize the importance of higher education, 2) expose
students to diverse career opportunities, and 3) increase student awareness/attitude towards
college/careers.

DATA ANALYSIS AND REPORTING INTERN

HISPA is a New Jersey-based non-profit organization also active in Miami, New York City, San

20,000 students, and worked with about 100 organizations.

HISPA is open to hosting an intern 3 days a week for no more than 21 hours per week.

This intern will assist with data analysis of metrics used to measure the impact of HISPA
educational programs. The intern will study the data, create reports and draw conclusions in
support of HISPA’s annual review, a key publication for HISPA’s funders, partners and schools.
No specific major is preferred, but the student should have strong organizational and critical
thinking skills; have strong self-management skills and be able to learn independently; and be
confident using spreadsheets like Excel or Google Sheets.

This internship will be entirely virtual. No transportation is required but a laptop computer with

Excel is required.

Job Description

More Than Bootstraps (MTB) is a young non-profit, serving Passaic, NJ, a predominately Latinx
community. We employ a stipend-supported, near-peer mentoring model to build a community of
first-generation, underrepresented students who empower each other to access and succeed in
higher education. We are looking for a first-generation college student who is willing to intern
with us for Summer 2022. The intern will have the ability to help shape programming and will
have the opportunity to develop skills in grant-writing, fundraising, communications, and
program development.

Summary of Project and Project Goals
In Summer 2022, MTB will have completed its second year of programming. We are seeking an
intern to assist us with program assessment, grant-writing, communications, and programming.

Skills Required
An MTB intern needs to have a keen understanding of the challenges facing first-generation
students in accessing and succeeding in higher education. The intern should also have an
appreciation of the resources, skills, and strengths first-generation students possess. We seek an
intern with creativity and ideas who possesses the confidence and initiative to advocate for
her/his/their ideas. Excellent communication skills and an ability to work with people from
diverse backgrounds are requirements for this position.

Facility in Spanish is preferred. First-generation college students are strongly encouraged to
apply!

Experience and/or interest in social media, grant-writing, fundraising, and program assessment
are also welcome.

Skills Developed
The MTB intern will have a unique opportunity to work on a young, growing non-profit with
people passionate about education, educational access for underserved communities, and the
ability of young people to empower each other. The intern can expect to develop expertise in
grant-writing, program assessment, and communications. She/he/they can also expect to develop

a general understanding of nonprofit management and to carve out a particular area of focus and
responsibility within the organization.

Supervisor
MTB was founded by Audrey Fisch, as a result of her frustration with increasing educational
inequality and the escalating challenges first-generation students face at resource-poor
institutions like New Jersey City University, where she is a long-time faculty member in English.
Our board is made up of educators, who are equally passionate about improving access and
success for underrepresented, first-generation students.

Supervising / Mentoring
While Audrey has been mentoring college students for more than thirty years, starting More
Than Bootstraps has been a career leap for Audrey and required the development of many
different skills. Over the last year and a half, she has gained experience leading the MTB Board
and Advisory Board, directing the program, and supervising interns from the Rutgers Graduate
School of Social Work and from the non-profit volunteer site, Catchafire. Audrey loves working
with passionate young people. The MTB intern will have support, guidance, and regular
feedback but also room to grow, struggle, and learn in her/his/their work with MTB.

Schedule
Ideally, the intern will devote 20 hours a week to this opportunity, but the working hours can be
flexible and combined with other responsibilities.

Start and End Dates
June 6-July 29 is ideal, but we can also incorporate some flexibility into the schedule of the
internship.

Rate of Pay
MTB devotes all the money it raises from foundations and individuals to the student stipends that
allow the MTB High School Fellows and College Students Leaders to devote their time to the
work of coming together as a community of success. As a result, we are unable to pay an intern,
and we hope very much that CHPRD will be able to support the intern working with our
organization.

Major
No particular major is required. Students should have a passion for equity, a curiosity about the
non-profit sector, and an ability to show initiative and creativity.

Transportation
The internship will be largely remote, with the possibility of a few in-person meetings in Passaic,
NJ. Passaic is accessible by public transportation.

Job Description

Overview

The Puerto Rican Association for Human Development, Inc. (PRAHD) was created in Perth
Amboy, New Jersey by a group of concerned community leaders/professionals who sought to
provide supportive services to disadvantaged Perth Amboy youth. In May 1974, PRAHD was
incorporated as a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and began to operate state funded
anti-delinquency programming within Perth Amboy. After the success of PRAHD’s youth
services, the organization expanded into more comprehensive activities and re-dedicated its
efforts towards ensuring the success and advancement of individuals in need. Forty years later,
PRAHD has grown into a thriving comprehensive human services agency that serves thousands
of New Jersey residents throughout Middlesex, Union and Hudson counties.

PRAHD operates 10 programs across a wide spectrum of unmet human service needs which
target education, housing, benefits access, youth development, preventative health, respite home
care for the developmentally disabled and senior services. All agency programs integrate a
variety of methodologies to maximize positive results and ensure sustainable social impact.
Furthermore, all activities are designed to afford clients the opportunity to become self-sufficient
allowing for the achievement of their personal, educational and financial goals.

PRAHD is dedicated to “developing human potential and promoting self-sufficiency through
programs designed to improve the social, economic, health and educational status of the
community in a culturally sensitive environment”. Complementary to PRAHD’s mission, the
organizational vision is to “empower the individual to reach their highest potential and to
participate meaningfully in their community”. PRAHD is an active community provider and
steward that constantly campaigns for the rights, dignity and betterment of impoverished
individuals and communities.
