Easy ways to stop being a couch potato: A question I routinely asked my students these days during their counselling sessions is, "How do you spend your time after school?" and a common response is, " I return from school/ tuitions have my lunch/ dinner and then watch a web series or either scroll through Instagram or Facebook." this usually leaves people with only about 5 hours of sleep because they can't seem to stop at one episode, or viewing one post or story. that's what you call, 'Binge Watching', and it is usually characterized by viewing suspenseful, dramatic, narrative content- often for more than three or four hours at a stretch. Why is Binge- Watching Addictive? TV or our phones stimulates our visual, aural and spatial senses and engages our entire rightbrain. The various complex characters, story plots and dialogues, require us to pay close, careful attention to the continual action onscreen. Since our brain is hard-wired to monitor changes in our environment- this is survival mechanism- we remain glued to the screen. Another major reason for Binge-Watching is the addictive quality it has. Our brains need a regular and healthy supply of certain happiness producing chemicals (called neurotransmitters), one of which is dopamine- a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, emotions, sleep and cognitive functions. Our stressful lives cause a reduction in the levels of dopamine in the brain. When we binge-watch a show there is a natural, internal reward that reinforces continued engagement in that activity. The brain sends signals to the body to continue this rewarding experience and soon the person develops a craving for dopamine. Research by scientists also indicate that the neuronal pathways that cause heroin and sex addictions are the same ones that cause an addiction to binge-watching. A 2018 study by Rubenking and colleagues found that there are four main motivations for binge-watching: 1. Anticipation of what was coming next- facilitated by both, content and technology features. 2. Management of moods and excitement/ arousal 3. Procrastination and Escapism 4. Social Goals- related to both co- viewing, discussing content with others and identification with characters. What feelings can you be left with after Binge-watching? When you spend a large amount of time immersed in the characters' lives, you bond with them like you would with someone in your life and its natural to experience feelings of loss, once the show ends. Some people experience withdrawal-like symptoms when the show is over- much like a hangover after a night of drinking. Another fallout is trouble sleeping , a recent study found that people, who tried to forget about their anxieties by watching television, had a four percent increased risk of developing insomnia. This is similar to any addictive behavior, if you use something (alcohol, drugs, TV) to help block out problems, you end up feeling worse later. GIVE BINGE WATCHING A BREAK FEATURE 49
Watching TV shows- lying supine for several hours at once can play havoc with the metabolism too. Lounging slows circulation and metabolism, making you feel sluggish. While the body gets sluggish, the brain may go into overdrive because TV shows with complicated narratives and emotionally complex characters are both cognitively and emotionally taxing. Here are some ways to monitor yourself: 1. Install gatekeepers: There are many extensions that limit the number of minutes spent on certain sites a day. 2. A greater reward: According to research, it shows that the faster you consume TV shows the less joy you actually get out of them. You get bored with the show and miss out on the subtle nuances that make it so great. So it's better to pace yourself with TV shows, give yourself a chance to think about what you've watched, build those theories and anticipate. 3. Understand that it plays havoc with your world view: Research shows that the longer you stay in the world of a TV show, the more it influences the way you see the real world. People report feeling fearful, anxious and bleak after watching thrillers. 4. Have a mid-way: an hour-long show will usually have a cliff-hanger at the end of every episode, which makes the viewer want to quickly proceed to the next one to see what happens. One way to resist the urge to do so is to just watch the first 20 minutes of the next episode. This will resolve the previous episode's cliffhanger, and you won't be left feeling frustrated. MS. WE ARE PROUD TO BE BOSCOITES When I stepped into this institution 25 years ago - young, nervous, relatively inexperienced, I did not realise that I would be one of the pioneers of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School at Panjim. It was for me a whole new world to experience. As the years unfolded I realised that experience is the best teacher and with the passing of time and I learnt a lot. At the onset I learnt of the Salesians of Don Bosco, their mission and their vision. The youth are their priority and at the level of this higher secondary, we were to able to handle this age group - the growing teenagers. I can describe my initial years as a learning phase and what I learnt or rather imbibed has created an indelible mark in my mind. Like any new born, there were teething problems and like any healthy youngster we overcame hurdles, grew healthier, happier and wiser with each passing day and every new academic year. We achieved milestones as they came, won laurels for our institution, participated at every opportunity we got, celebrated in good cheer, displayed good sportsmanship at our short comings. All in all, we have grown academically, emotionally and spiritually and we have the Lord Almighty and our mentor St John Bosco to be grateful to. Today at 25 years, we look back with pride at the avid memories we have. We remember our students right from the first batch that registered in June 1994 to the present. Our students have made us proud. They now span all the corners of the globe and they visit their alma mater with fond memories and nostalgia and are proud to be Boscoite. We have made this remarkable journey of 25 years and pledge to continue in our mission of delivering holistic education of the higher standards to the young people of our state. MS. Restructuring and reshaping libraries has been and will be a phenomenon for centuries to come. But for its willingness, the arduous journey from cave inscrip ons to stone wri ngs, from palm leaves to print, from print to virtual world and digital world would have been impossible. The expanding knowledge and expansive technology, convergence of disciplines considered incompa ble by tradi onal standards, cannot be tackled singularly. It seeks a holis c approach. By holis c, I mean a new dimension to conven onal schemes of handling informa on centres. By holis c, I mean a shi from the old paradigm of library usage to a flexible user centric system that permits a collabora ve mechanism for use, reuse and be er use of documents in different forms and formats. It means access to right informa on using best methods in right measures using a pla orm that provides and suits their needs and interests. Our centres of basic educa on have a callous a tude to knowledge building sectors, primary considera on being to scholas c performance. O en, we forget the libraries are the founda on where a reader is ini ated. There is nothing sorrowful than a trove of collec on unused because it is inaccessible. But many of our libraries are in a state of transi on. To be more appropriate, we have hybrid libraries where the tradi onal and the digital atmosphere co-exist. In my opinion that is the best mix a library can adopt for a collabora ve approach, for collabora on does take place within the four walls and out through networking. Once upon a me the libraries were mere repositories, responsible only for the flow of books and its preserva on and text materials much confined to print. The tradi onal design was very func onal. But for a society heavily dependent on its intellectual advancement for its survival, a dynamic suppor ng system that could match the informa on needs beyond physical presence, loca on and me is a dire necessity. The future libraries must be proac ve rather than being ornamental with well shelved neatly arranged materials. Beyond the storehouse concept it must be places of content building through sharing of ideas and effec ve relevant knowledge crea on. It needs to redefine itself as agents of community building houses rather than addressing needs of a specific clientele. The 21st century libraries must be brain storming centres that allow even loud thinking, room full of noise, hubs hos ng workshops on tools suppor ng cri cal thinking like Expert Systems which help simulate decision making abili es of human brain. On a posi ve note, the creeping in of technology into these centres has blurred the nature of interac on and redefined its role as community builders and educa onal blocks irrespec ve of the organisa on to which it belongs. In the past, a user who could view the organisa onal collec on with the help of an Applica on So ware was on a comfort zone. But the entry of knowledge centres into classrooms and lecture halls has dras cally changed the user-informa on professional equa ons. The dynamic presence of these units as educa ve modules instrumental in shaping and formula ng schemes rather than passive employees in charge of repositories is much laudable. This calls for a library framework that permits reading, research collabora on, studying and teamwork in an ambience that allows breathing space rather than places crowded by books. The orienta on must be on designing interiors that would be more of a comfort zone sufficiently a rac ve by way of furniture and sea ng arrangements. Large areas of space, where the user can shape and debate ideas with flexible hours for u lisa on of reading materials, will be the elements for considera on. This calls for an innova ve well-designed area that will sa sfy the tradi onal user and the cyber based clientele. It does not mean extensive area of usage for there are situa ons when an ins tu on cannot afford large area either due to space limita on or financial constraints. By the word' innova ve' I mean effec ve u lisa on of space available taking into considera on the preference of the stakeholders. Teamwork being the norm of the day the stakeholders prefer open learning space for collabora on, discussion without having their voices down during their brain storming sessions. The unused walls inside the premises and along the corridors can well be an archival place for holdings that will remain as depositories for the posterity. RESTRUCTURING LIBRARIES FEATURE 52
FEATURE What ma ers to the present-day users are well designed and planned areas, furniture flexible enough to make sessions of long dura on comfortable - in the sense it makes possible movement of those things easy in order to avoid disturbances. Designing a reading space has never been a priority in the minds of parent organisa ons in many developing na ons. The presence of digital tools has gradually remodelled library spaces by visual audit to enrich customer experience. Library designers propose four space models while conceptualising a learning centre. The four corners are the inspira on space, learning space, mee ng space and performa ve space in an ideal situa on. These are not four corners of a room but pillars that support four goals like experience, involvement, empowerment and innova on. The type of furniture one chooses sets the tone in the modern sense of a library. Though custom designed wooden furniture of yesteryears meets the specific demands of user this may restrict future unan cipated expansion of area. Hence fixtures like bean bags that allow easy flexible movements is recommended to avoid addi onal expenditure by way of maintenance in what we call 'Libraries in transi on'. But the paradox is that while developing na ons believe technology being an answer to all their maladies, user studies in na ons much advanced in library technology finds that the new peripherals and the modern furniture with all its lustre, fail to understand the persuading factors that draws a customer to its premise. The reports indicate health related problems faced in technological environment as causa ve factors for the lack of enthusiasm among the patrons. Hence the parent bodies on an experimental basis has incorporated arrangements for si ng on floors where a reader can sit and reflect, read and debate in a relaxed manner with hands and legs stretched. Experts in Ergonomics and psychology say the closeness to ground level energises the physical body and calms the mind. In a well-designed reading place tuned to cyber world, considerable a en on to geographical loca on is essen al to make communica on satellite network possible. A slow or failed network system due to bad infrastructure in the form of technical defects that hamper free flow of data defeats the very purpose of a cyber-library. Unfortunately, these considera ons are not thought of while planning a site for the library. The speed with which data can be transferred or retrieved by a client marks the success of a knowledge centre. Unless these two elements of development are brought together a well-knit system of sharing the poten als of informa on Technology will become fu le. Video conferencing, tele conferencing, podcas ng tools used in addressing the user's need depend on network solely depend on the services of this mode of communica on. Role of Informa on Professionals: Linked to the communica on process is the func onaries employed in delivering the informa on from point to point to the stakeholders. The changing roles of this personnel to more technical oriented services to accommodate varied interests of the stakeholders seems more pronounced despite the fact technology does not determine human ac on but human needs shape technology. It is unlikely that a librarian will be involved in the nuts and bolts of programming. But it is per nent that they understand the algorithms of the library applica on so wares to some extent for manipula on modifica on and organisa on of a database and efficient speedy communica on networks like packet switching that help data transfer preferably through op c fibre cables. Packet switching is a digital network transmission in which data is sent in packet form but on high frequency speed. Of late a no on that informa on places could be handled by computer professionals has jeopardised healthy atmosphere of interac on between the two units. The role of these working groups must be well defined to the extent that neither the tool dominates the system nor the system limps in the absence of an efficient technological delivery system. Another major problem that goes unno ced is the safety measures for the personal belongings of the stakeholders. Though the issue appears to be trivial on several occasions this discourages the flow of customers to library premises. This is an observa on made during my tenure as a library professional. 53
FEATURE With infra-structure in place a flexible transac on system that permits the user freedom to choose flexible me and space me to interact with the modali es of the system, a suitable mechanism that welcomes the clientele at any hour of the day. A web-based solu on that can be address a problem from any quarter through a computer, allowing the user to discover the library resources 24/7 around the clock from various loca on is a very significant step in an evolving library. This also includes access to the collec on by way of online database that shows the document availability, its form and format, exchange and facility to place demand for the document without necessita ng the physical presence of the customer, the freedom to reserve, renew request and review the status of his demand. In an academic atmosphere it is a crucial library component for the usereduca onist and librarian interac on and resource management. A simple measure in shaping libraries could be installing 'Library Book Drop Boxes' outside the library. The system allows user deposit the document into a machine installed outside the library premises. The bar code scanner scans the document for the procedural func ons which otherwise is repe ve, me consuming and cumbersome when handled manually by the library. Thus, it helps the patron and the professionals in providing effec ve role. The display screen allows the reader to know his borrowing status and his limita ons in using the borrowing facility and amount accrued as fine in organisa ons that ini ate the penalty system. This opera onal method has been found very useful in reuse of documents when it is urgently needed by right persons at the right me without any delay. In India this concept is yet to get acceptance in small libraries due to limited funds available from parent bodies. Another posi ve step in a learning atmosphere would be employing the digital system where the learners and the educators move around on data and for data. It could be a classroom instruc on or a space within an organisa onal unit conducive to exchange of data in the form of text notes with a different perspec ve, new ways of addressing related topics thus enriching the content for future use crea ng a study material or discussion material for posterity upon which a systema c body of knowledge can be built upon. Podcas ng, video conferences are some of the new educa on building blocks in academic environment suppor ng content development in teaching and learning. Podcast are hosted online that enable access to informa on any me a user wants. Stored data can be downloaded to a personal computer and played on a music player. The staff can record their reference materials and upload it online by following the simple steps like record audio and store on the computer as sound file. Then convert the data to an MP3/MP4 file. Finally edit if required and post it on the internet. Subscribe to the RSS feeds which automa cally download updated podcasts. This allows students to access the lectures for reference in home atmosphere. Similarly, an instructor can post lessons online and provide enough me for understanding concepts in a way that suits the target. A major advantage of podcas ng is the subscriber gets informed constantly of new text available. But this format is yet to get popularity in some na ons. As an alterna ve video conferencing as a tool has found profound use worldwide. In the final analysis restructuring and reshaping libraries is a process where new and old ways of using documents converge. No tool is obsolete and no physical space irrelevant. What ma ers is availability of readable machine to read records that emerge in different me scale. University of Stanford has materials 'impossible to be found' for research scholars stored in microfilms and micro fiche. SURPRISED! It was the summer of 1994: we were excited that we had just overcome the big challenge of the Standard X Board exams, and were more excited with the feeling that we were very soon going to be in “college”. Some of us had already eagerly chosen which college we would be joining. There were many, including myself, who had chosen to go to the then popular option, Dhempe Higher Secondary as it had its own temptations, besides the fact that it was next to Miramar beach. Just as we were about to bid goodbye to the confines of Don Bosco High School, the then Principal Fr. Lucas Mendonca came t o u s w i t h a n o p e n invitation. He said that Don Bosco was opening its new Higher Secondary School and that we should all join. This was an invitation we surely were not glad to accept, because the first thought that came to our minds was that Don Bosco was a Boys' School and there was no way that Don Bosco Higher Secondary School was going to be an exception; and of course no one wanted to endure another two (boring) years in a boys-only institution. So one of us gathered courage and gave vent to our curiosity. He asked, “Father, will the Higher Secondary be only for boys or will it be co-ed (for boys and girls)?” Our worst fears vaporized in thin air with a reply that we were extremely delighted to hear, “Don't worry, boys, it will be for both boys and also girls, so do join”. With this guarantee from Fr. Principal, many of us enrolled and it was history in the making that we were going to be the “First Batch of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School”. And no guesses, our principal was Fr. Lucas Mendonca; who every Don Bosco Boy remembers was super-strict and a terror in school; but to the higher secondary section he somewhat relaxed his attitude and was rather cool and more lenient to us. As we were the first batch; we did not have a separate higher secondary campus (or section) so classes were kept in the afternoon, right after the high school section ended their classes. We had to occupy the Standard X classrooms (and in fact I was in the same classroom for my Standard X, XI and XII). Another of the greatest freedoms in the (junior) college was that there were no uniforms, so we could wear casual clothes. But our joy did not last for long as within a month's time; much to our disappointment; the education department passed the rule that all junior colleges should have compulsory uniforms. Don Bosco Higher Secondary soon complied, and our uniform of brown and white stripes was introduced. There are so many fond memories about Higher Secondary days that it will be quite an enormous task to sum them all up. But yes, the exciting journey of two years that followed gave us s o m e m e m o r a b l e e x p e ri e n c e s t h a t we continue to cherish to this day. A part and parcel of college life was to be a part of a gang of friends. We had our own small gang in Standard XI that we had named The Back Benchers, and as we reached Standard XII, this gang was rechristened with the more whacky name: “SLANGS”. There were six of us: the first letter of each of our names contributed to the name of the gang; (the “G” in the name was me). We became instantly famous and I had even drawn a name logo for the group and we had made t-shirts for ourselves. As popularity grew; many people started becoming jealous of us and many also wanted to be part of our gang. During our Standard XII year, we were sent for an Annual Retreat to Palotti Home in Chicalim, and no one will ever forget how a few of us had frightened the whole batch with horror stories; the girls still believe that one of our friends actually got possessed by a ghost. Also at the same time FM radio had just THOSE WERE THE DAYS … Memories of Don Bosco Higher Secondary First Batch 1994 – 1996 55
started creating waves in Goa, and there was this 6 pm programme: “Love is in the air” that was very popular. We used to send messages and dedicate songs to our friends, and even sometimes to girls from other schools; it used to be the talk of the town in those days. Yes, along with all the fun and pranks, during those two years we did learn a lot of things. I personally, am indebted to all my teachers for all they have done for me. Above all, they had recognized my capabilities, and it was because of an opportunity that I was given in Standard XI that I overcame stage fright, and in the long run I mastered public speaking skills. As a General Secretary, there were no major roles in those days. But yes, I did pick up some leadership skills and learnt how to take up duties and responsibilities. Today, I can say that I had made a good decision to join Don Bosco (and am glad that I accepted the “open” invitation) because it was a different experience in so many ways. One of the many things that set Don Bosco apart was the strong teacher-student bonding. The teachers were more like good friends to us. I am sure that most of them will remember us; even by name; because we were in the first batch and we were all new at Don Bosco Higher Secondary in one way or the other. But that was 1994! Over the years Don Bosco has grown in size and stature, and is today the most sought after institution for higher secondary studies. After a quarter century of its existence; the seasons have changed and now the first choice for students choosing their Higher Secondary is undoubtedly, Don Bosco. This indicates the progress the institution has made through time. As I conclude, I take this opportunity on this momentous occasion to extend my warmest wishes to the Principal, Teachers and Students (both past and present) of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School for having completed 25 years. Congratulations on this milestone achievement and wishing you continued success in the years to come. GALILEO A. Students seeking science as their preferred academic subject are reducing in number. Science departments in Universities are finding it difficult to get enough number of students. This is in a time when science and technology leap in giant strides! What has gone wrong? There was a time when students scoring higher marks chose science, and the lesser ones chose arts and commerce for their higher studies. It was thought, definitely wrongly, that science subjects required more brains. Now more and more brainy children pursue arts and other subjects. Even the lesser ones do not want science. But why? There could be many reasons. First of all, it is not the brain but the attitude and aptitude that matter while selecting an academic career. With expanding exposure to an expanse of opportunities and interests, students are no more bound by conventional and artificial convictions and segregations. They see many subjects that catch their imagination and ingenuity. Secondly, nobody is prepared to remain unemployed or under-employed after putting in substantial money and efforts in education, just for the sake of science or any subject for that matter. They will pursue the subjects having good market value. Thirdly, the disproportionate monetary attraction offered by some particular employment fields lures them towards these market-driven subjects, though of predictably short life-span. While aptitude-aspect remains the same as before even now, the attitude-aspect has changed dramatically. Aptitude is often moulded; attitude is always cast. Like any other academic discipline, science needs hard work. Students may think that other subjects are easier. To go deep into any subject, one needs to put in hard work. While pure science deters potential students, applied science fascinates them. This is equally true with the case of pure arts and applied arts. But the fact remains that to go 'applied' one has to know the fundamentals. The present-day educational system does not provide for imparting fundamental knowledge; it harps mostly on the fanciful aspects of science and arts. Naturally the choice left for the students is between knowledge and fancy; and they go for the fanciful option. A correction: the parents and teachers go for the fanciful option! Left alone, a child chooses what suits his or her aptitude and capacity. It may be mathematics, it may be language, it may be geography, may be cartooning. The attitude follows. Given a wide variety of options, the child will try all and stick to one or two, or even many. Once it was the glorification of pure science that led our children towards science. Now the glorification of other subjects leads the children towards other subjects. This has to change. Our present-day educational system, coupled with market hype and parental pressure, denies the child the pleasure of trying and testing. They are not left alone. The parents do not leave them alone. What the parents do not do, the teachers ought to do. They too follow the parental pleasure and market pressure. The children suffer. Science suffers. Arts suffer. The whole sphere of knowledge and knowledge generation suffers. And our whole generation suffers. It is not very difficult to handle the situation; it is not too late too. Show the children all options and give them all opportunities; they will bite what suits them. Tell them science is like any other subject. And give them all options. Make sure they get fair and equal opportunities for educational development and career advancement in science and other subjects. Excellence in anything is good; in science it cannot be worse! ONE FOR THOSE LITTLE ONES STRUGGLING IN SCIENCE FEATURE 57
If you dispassionately analyse the syllabi in our schools and pre-college courses, you will certainly see that there is no discrimination of one subject against another. Arts, science, humanities and physical activities are all presented with equal dignity. They are all pitched equally. And opportunities are aplenty to inculcate and develop interest in any of them in equal measures. It is at this impressionable age and stage the parents and peers tend to twist and break the fine natural thread that binds a child with its favourite subject. This also leads to disinterest, disregard and disrespect towards subjects other than the one chosen forcibly, not naturally. It is at this stage the teachers should intervene. Let the children have what they want. Attitude without aptitude and aptitude without attitude are both useless. The right one in the wrong place is equal to the wrong one in the wrong place! Make everything interesting to the students. They will reach the intellectual criticality where the aptitude and attitude match up and peak up. When the job market clears itself of its overemphasis on peripheral, supercilious and ephemeral demands on skills – and not necessarily o n k n owl e d g e – r e l a t e d t o c o m p u t e r s , communications and management, and settles down to essentials of depth and knowledge in due course, you will see genuine interests in science, arts and any other discipline sprout and flourish. You will see students then pursuing subjects one for their brain and one for their heart, and this combination for their job. Are you ready for that transition and transformation? DR G. “I sometimes wonder, how a student ranked 454, Gets in over another ranked 101, just because his ancestors' status was low. Why are we perpetuating discrimination, propagating our differences? Instead of bridging the divide, we're widening our distances…” 'SC?''ST?''OBC?''GENERAL CATEGORY?' These are familiar checkboxes you'd find on every college admission form in India; but does which strata of society you fall into really matter? Or is it merit that should determine your ability to get admission into a university or contest an election? Is it fair to able to snatch away a seat from a more deserving and educated candidate just because of your caste, religion or economic status? Reserving seats for one category as opposed to another, results in chaos with every fragment of society forcing the government to meet their conniving demands, and in this cut throat, dog eat dog world, we don't have the means to provide for such special treatment to everyone asking for it. By relaxing the entry criteria through reservation, we are fuelling inflation of moderate credentials, as opposed to the promotion of a merit-based education system, which is the cornerstone of all progressive countries.India will keep witnessing brain-drain and talent will keep moving away, as students have no choice but to offer their abilities to the welcoming nature of other countries - in which they will excel because of equal job opportunities and ample career options. In this abyss of mediocrity, little incentive is put on excellence. This policy is anti-progressive, rewarding mediocrity over efficiency and capability. “We're compromising on our quality, Resources being wasted, there's a scarcity, Shoving down our throats, this casteist mentality, Reservations are anything but a necessity…” In today's equality fuelled scenario, reservation policies have only proven their regressive nature, reviving the age-old discriminatory caste system. It tends to justify that our ethnic identity overrides all else, a mentality which threatens a country haunted by its history of communalism. Our constitution which guarantees freedom, democracy and sovereignty is being driven into submission over disparity among communities seeking the privileges of reservation. When children from backward areas, especially girls, are made to toil for a basic education at the primary level, on what basis are seats reserved for them two levels later in the education pyramid? Reservation on the basis of class and gender holds no aces against those on the basis of condition. The process aimed at bringing all citizens on par with each other, is shattering contemporary society, like a delicate vase into hundreds of shards. The policy of reservation, or a better way of addressing itthe policy of social division, certainly does not foster growth, pits one community against another and is the living antithesis of 'unity in diversity'. WHY DOES THE RESERVATION BIRD CONTINUE TO SING IN INDIA? 59
“A tool to appease the voting class, An instrument of control, Thwarting all stability and democracy, For the bureaucrats, a juicy rigmarole …” It's no surprise that India is the land of diversity, the number of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes seems to proliferate and multiply year after year. Much in contrast to not so long ago, it is now a matter of pride and privilege to be branded as an SC or ST, irrespective of your social or financial status. With reservation policies at your whims and fancies, why would it not? Moreover, the dominant among the backward sections of society loot the benefits of reservation, leaving us dumbfounded with a social paradox. The bright minds of the poor are left clutching at straws in their dark squalor, while the middle and higher sections swiftly move ahead, carefree and oblivious to a game that was not theirs to play. Teachers who can't spell, unqualified bureaucrats and quacks dispensing lethal drugs are the sour fruits of such an appalling system. Politicians waste no time in expanding their vote banks and bank accounts by playing the reservation game with the poor sections of society. At this rate, the day is not far away, when the so-called Indian upper class demand a quota of their own because there seems to be no end to the mayhem caused by reservations. “Why are we promoting inequality? In a country built around solidarity? Why are we playing such a crude game? Is this a circus of popularity?” Caste, reservation and magnitude make for a volatile political cocktail. India is unique in that its reservation policies address the historically disadvantaged groups, defined primarily by a caste system. Just tracking this system is complex enough- 3,000 castes and 25,000 subcastes. What adds fuel to the fire is that it is implemented at the centre and the state, and even in combination with gender, religion and economic classifications. It is also debatable, whether previously marginalised groups should be included within the confines of reservation. The passage of a long period of time since introduction of reservation has now ensured that certain sections of the so-called 'advantaged' castes have now begun to feel the pinch. As the reservation pie grows larger, it only furthers the agenda of exclusion over inclusion. How the tables have turned! “Continued advantage, some do enjoy, Newfound disadvantage for others, it does bring, A political system that divides to conquer, Why does the reservation bird continue to sing?” KIMBERLY FERNANDES BRETT SEQUEIRA DEON RODRIGUES ANDREW DE SOUSA XII ARTS 60
If there's one thing we can observe during our day to day lives is that we humans do like to leave a mark behind; glorifying ourselves by building decadent superstructures that signify our success. At the cost of our environment, of course! Consider this: The Earth is more than 4.5 billion years. Human-like creatures did not make an appearance until only around 300000 years ago. Within such a short span of time we have managed to turn the world upside down. Because of climate activists like Greta Thunberg, more and more people are getting sensitised about the issues of man-made climate change. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has stated in its special report on global warming that, if the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions is not mitigated, global warming is likely to reach 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) between 2030 and 2052, risking major crises and that preventing such crises will require a swift transformation of the global economy that has "no documented historic precedent". Almost every major scientist agrees that that the world as we know it, could end within the next 20 years. Unfortunately, the solution will be impossible to implement because it involves destroying what is one of the most economically important sectors: The Oil Industry. As we all know that would not only lead to many people being thrown out of a job, it would also cause a major global financial and economic collapse. Finally, I personally feel that now it is simply too late to save the Earth. 30 years too late, in fact. This brings me to my main topic. You see, Space has often been considered as the final frontier; the very limit of our capacity and imagination. But here's the thing, I believe we can do so much more. Long before we appeared on Earth, it was ruled by the dinosaurs until they were wiped off the surface of the Earth by an asteroid. Even if the Earth was to be destroyed, we would still survive because we are a nomadic species by nature. Not just Mars, NASA has also discovered a couple of Earth like planets. And though they are currently unreachable, the rate at which we are making scientific progress, the day may not be far, when humanity spreads out across the entire galaxy. For a long time, many believed the Space Race of the 1960's was simply a competition between the two major power blocs of the time, the Soviet Union and the United States of America; to see who could go the furthest before one of them had an economic collapse. Basically, the scientific equivalent of two rich people arguing over who had the faster car. The thing is, though it cost a lot initially, the lessons we learnt from the Space Race not only helped develop some of the technology we are so dependent on but also helped keep an eye on our Solar System as well. Recently, India's Moon rocket, Chandrayaan 2 launched its lander which attempted to land on the pole of the moon, which reportedly contains water. Though unsuccessful, it shows how close we are to discovering the secrets of the Moon. The National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) also announced its Artemis Program in 2017, which aims to send man on the Moon, this time, to stay. What we learn from this mission can also be used to send man on Mars. The most important part is the fact that NASA wi l l col laborate with private space exploration firms such as Space X, which opens the doors for public travel. The only hope is that all the mistakes we committed on Earth will not be repeated on Mars. That way, we can finally have a peaceful and sustainable living. VIEWPOINT After all the activities lined up for our silver jubilee celebrations it was time for our annual cultural programme. When our teacher entered the class she asked me if I would be willing to act. I was too confused and a little shy to say 'Yes'. But I was back with a positive reply on the next day. We were all curiously waiting to know what exactly we were staging and the role each of us had to play. "Anation desirous of securing true Swaraj cannot despise its past." These words of the Mahatma were becoming a part of the play. Through our creative, humorous, yet powerful presentation, we were to stage Gandhiji’s message of truth and non-violence. How relevant would it be? Or how best we could project his message on stage was something we were all anxious about. Finally the rehearsals began and after all the hard work, we were able to stage a mesmerising show for our annual programme, 'Re-visiting Swaraj - ATribute to the Mahatma.' As the play was unfolding we had the opportunity to very closely analyse and apply Mahatma Gandhi's message to each and every profession - doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians and even social workers. I was given the interesting role of an NGO person. In today's world NGOs play a crucial role in our society. But very often there are NGOs mostly working for their own publicity and selfish interests. That's exactly what my role was all about. I played the role of a shrewd NGO member who had cleaned the place where Gandhiji's statue was placed. When the news of the statue coming to life spread and the news reporters rushed to the place I also ran to gain publicity, to take credit for every bit of social work I had been doing. Eventually it is Gandhiji's deep message on social work and selfless service that renders a change of heart and a sense of selfless service that makes a new beginning of true Swaraj. Since times immemorial there has existed the tradition of voluntary service to the needy and helpless. Not only in times of calamities or distress but also at regular times they create awareness and work for the welfare of women and children. But very often in the name of social work and NGO projects people have only enhanced their personal and family ambitions and financial stronghold. Though I played the role of an NGO member on the stage, in my real life I am just a normal individual. Yet I feel it is not just the duty of any particular organisation but the duty of every individual to share the responsibility of social work. We have to give back to our society through which we enrich ourselves every day. ANISHA MENDONCA XI ARTS RE-VISITING SWARAJ 62
One of its kind, the jubilee pop-up sale that was organised by our Higher Secondary was a fun loving experience for me. We had marked it - 7th and 8th December 2019! A number of stalls were put up to promote young entrepreneurship and we were all set for it. We had our class stall, along with the special stall by our Co-operation students. Some did it as a part of their project work and some worked hard with excitement and for fun! We had a variety! Variety of things for sale and variety of customers to entertain. We sold Christmas decorations, mocktails, sorpotel, sausage bread, sannas, etc. The mouth watering sanna-sorpotel was the highest sold food item and the reasonably priced mocktails kept us on our toes. I really had two memorable days being in the stall and happy memories multiplied because it was my birthday on December 8th. I had a small pop-up celebration. One of its surprising kind! There were moments when we would wonder whether we would have a good sale and there were those moments when our students stood outside the shrine and called us to 'refill' the stock because the sannas were getting over. Some hilarious questions popped up from customers. Looking at our acquired skills of entrepreneurship, a customer asked, "Since how long have you'll been in this business?" and we replied, "Since yesterday!" Definitely with joy and pride we could entertain any type and every type of questions and customers. The skills we gained, the lessons we learnt and the memories cherished were awesome. We ran for the supply of sannas, sometimes in search of sprite bottles for mocktails and other times we just did jump around with excitement on our successful venture. After all the days of systematic planning, preparation and hard work, with the coordination and contribution from every class member, we did the best! We made the highest profit and our Class XI Arts won the Best Entrepreneur award. Never did we do it for any award but we were rewarded for our sincere contribution and team effort. Indeed a proud moment with memories to last a lifetime. TANISHA MENDES XI ARTS MEMORIES OF THE JUBILEE POP-UP SALE MEMORIES 63
Getting a red card in your life is humiliating, especially when you are considered to be a prominent member of your football team. I wanted to win each and every ball for the team irrespective of how I could do it - but I wanted to win it. I have always entered the football field with the thought in mind - 'break or be broken, but do it for your team'. I may sound a bit harsh but sometimes you need it. I won some tackles while I got warned for some. But I also got a yellow card for a harsh challenge on a player during the first half of the match. For the second half, towards the end of the match I went sliding in recklessly for the ball throwing the player down in spite of my team winning the game and I got sent off with a 'RED CARD'. The Red Card! It was a sign to step out. It had a sign of desperation on every one. I didn't know how to hide my shame so kept a smile stretching my face. But inside, my heart was beating so fast. The thought began hitting me hard. Wasn't I selfish going about so rough and winning the ball for myself? Didn't I fail to think about the team and the next match that was more important? And that fear and pathetic desperation hit me even harder when we lost the next level match. I kept the smile as an outward mask but I felt awful and useless inside when I saw my teammates weeping. I had realised the importance and the helplessness after a player gets the red card. I was sitting outside and watching them lose. The most disgusting feeling! There were mixed emotions as some people kept on mocking me and some tried to console. But it never mattered now because the damage was already done. All that mattered was the guilt that I had planted in me. The Silver Jubilee inter higher secondary football tournament had an experience with a lasting impact on me. This very 'Red Card' gave me a lesson for life. The lesson learnt on the football field and yet so similar to life in general. We always get opportunities, we have freedom to our discretion, but how we use it is our choice. Opportunities and warnings come knocking at our door, may be sometimes just once or if you are lucky enough then twice. But if you misuse it or miss that opportunity to prove yourself, alas! You might never get another chance however much you want it to prove yourself. And the feeling of guilt and regret will never leave you. So my experience says, if you are warned with a yellow card in life then be cautious. You can't afford to take a chance for a Red Card. You have a life that's to be lived only once! One of the most distinct and fond memories I have of being in Don Bosco was when I participated in the Shakespeare Festival at Chowgule’s, Margao. It was the one moment when we all put aside our class rivalries and worked together to bring home the first place overall trophy. But the Shakespeare Festival was by no means something easy or something that happened overnight. Yet at the end of the day, it was worth it. We started preparing for the Shakespeare Festival the moment we received the invitation from Chowgules, Margao. At the time of receiving the invitation, I had no idea what the Shakespeare Festival was, but my friend Natasha (11 Arts at the time) who had participated in the event before, told me what it was about and said that she would be needing help for the competition, and that's how I got into it. The Shakespeare Festival consisted of many events the scores of which would come together and decide our fate. I was specifically a part of the event known as Diorama Drama which was a miniature model making event. Natasha and Ishani (12 Science at the time) were the main representatives while the rest of us helped in creating the model. My first full on experience for preparing for the Shakespeare Festival happened during our Ganesh holidays where we would meet up in school to prepare for the model. Simultaneously everyone else started preparing for their events. The events ranged from onstage events from acting to poetry to monologue and offstage events from story book making to mosaic to a meme making competition. Yes... a meme making competition! We never stopped preparing for the Shakespeare Festival. We would prepare in between events like our Teachers’ Day programme, we would miss our free periods just so that we could work on our event. We made sure we finished everything beforehand, we didn't want to rush last minute. I still remember the joy everyone felt when we made a working fireplace for our model. One of the major contributing factors that aided us to win was our teacher-in-charge Ms. Ingrid. She gave us ample time and creative freedom to do whatever we had to do to win. After all we had to bring back the trophy which Don Bosco had been winning for 2 years straight. The day of the actual competition was hectic and everyone was on the move. At registration Don Bosco was given the name Verona. Verona being a major landmark in many Shakespeare's plays. I helped the acting team with props and after the Natasha and Ishani finished putting the final touches on the diorama I was free to roam about. This was the first time I explored the great expanse that was Chowgule College. Something told me that I would end up in Chowgule’s one day (guess what I did). The last event of the day before the valedictory was the Soliloquy which was performed by Raj (12 Science at the time), we all gathered in the auditorium to watch his performance and one of the most amazing part was the fact that Don Bosco occupied a large chunk of the auditorium. After the Soliloquy, came the valedictory ceremony, some of the highlights included Siddhi (12 Arts at the time) winning the mosaic event for the third time in the row. Every time the presenters called out Team Verona and the moment when we won first place for Diorama Drama. Finally, the moment of truth! We were worried we wouldn't win. but then to our pleasant surprise we won. We took home the trophy and Don Bosco won the Shakespeare Festival for the third time. Looking back, the Shakespeare Festival was a great experience for me. It taught me time management, team work and the importance of hard work. During the 10 Anniversary of the th Shakespeare Festival I was given the role of Shakespeare himself. So going from participating in the Shakespeare Festival to being Shakespeare two years later was really a full circle moment for me. The path to success is not defined by what we do for a living or how many rupees or dollars we have in our bank account! It is defined by our character and most importantly, by our deeds. But sadly, today we choose to follow the former. Money is essential and provides the required social security, power and status but it cannot be the only measure of success. A successful person is one who has adjusted to life and its challenges. His success is seen and measured by his good moral character, humility and humane endeavours in society. Let me give you 3 little tips to be successful at whatever you do: 1. Wake up every morning feeling happy because when you start your day on a happy note, your entire day goes well. Be grateful for waking up because every day is a blessing. 2. Chalk out your day. Make a list of things you need to get done before the day ends. It starts as soon as school ends. Put it on your phone, your dressing mirror or any place where it's visible. This will help you to de-clutter and give you a head-start. 3.Always be optimistic! Harvard Professor Shawn Achor recently discovered that job or work success is not calculated by how smart or talented you are but by how happy you are! And this he calls the "Happiness Advantage". So, don't be afraid to fail, because only by failing will you find success. JAYDEN PAIS XII SCIENCE VIEWPOINT In a recent study, two monkeys were placed side by side. In exchange for handing over a pebble to the scientist, they were rewarded with a treat. The first monkey was handed a cucumber. He was totally happy and was about to eat it, when he noticed that his neighbour was being handed a grape - a much sweeter, tastier treat - for doing the same. The monkey was totally infuriated and threw the cucumber back at the scientist. Moral: Comparison can really be the Thief of Joy. It was time to make a choice of school for my son. I was firm in my decision. It had to be Don Bosco Panjim. I hadn't been so lucky to get the same opportunity for myself in the high school, but my son has been blessed to be a part of such a vibrant institution. Coming with my son for his admission was, for me, a poignant walk down the memory lane of 1994. With great determination on my part, I was able to get admission to the Higher Secondary. It was the first batch when the Higher Secondary was newly started. We all came with high expectations of being free and excited for all kinds of fun. But we were surprised (and partly sad) to realise that there were the same kind of rules and regulations like what we had in our old school system. Nevertheless the discipline at our higher secondary made us what we are today. Don Bosco schools are always known for their numerous activities. As time passed by, these activities have actually multiplied. Now when I see my son getting trained for football, I remember our good old days. Our higher secondary team, systematically planned and trained by Sir Milton participated in the league matches against teams like Dhempo, Divar and others. We worked tirelessly on the field. Our practices were so rigorous that I spoilt my new pair of shoes while practising for our school team. Couldn't blame anyone, neither the shoes nor the rough ground! But the Principal, Fr. Lucas watched it all. He quietly paid for a new pair of shoes for me. Even the other players who couldn't afford were encouraged to pursue their passion for football with a pair of shoes. Football, basketball, table tennis and much more, I still see around even now. But what I find missing is the natural love and the passion towards sports and other activities. We had that passion for sports, love for our institution and respect for our teachers and fellow students. Two years at Don Bosco Higher Secondary made us individuals with a difference in our family and in society. The principal was a strict disciplinarian, yet a very loving, affectionate father-figure who would come around with a pocket-full of chocolates. The teachers, along with the supervisor, were very warm and loving, motherly and encouraging, and yet very demanding, especially in terms of personal discipline and hygiene. The students were united, hardworking and respectful of one another. There was love, fun and discipline - the essence of any Don Bosco school. This year when the higher secondary completes 25 years with their motto 'Silver Memories, Golden Dreams', I wish them all the best. Every day as I accompany my son to the high school, I cast a “silver” glance at my beloved higher secondary and my heart swells with tremendous pride and gratitude. MR. THE EVIL HOUSE Once there lived a happy family of four members, a couple, their daughter Jane and son Ryder. Ryder was in the last year of college and Jane a perky teenager. The parents would be away from home for about a week. Ryder was kept in charge and Jane was asked to stay out of trouble. Taking advantage of their absence, Ryder decided to attend a late-night party. He instructed Jane to have dinner and go to bed early. He warned her to stay at home while he was gone. Jane quickly finished her dinner and no sooner had Ryder left she disobeyed. She mounted her cycle and strayed around the neighbourhood where she encountered an abandoned house. Someone had put up a signboard. Written in bright red paint were the words “Haunted House, Please do not Enter”. Jane got curious and entered totally ignoring the warning. From outside, the house had appeared dilapidated, dirty with broken windows. No sooner had she stepped in, to her utter amazement everything transformed. It was very clean and all the windows intact. It seemed as though somebody lived there. The door suddenly slammed shut. Feeling trapped, she looked around for an exit and found two curved staircases side by side. Hurriedly, she climbed the steps of the first staircase. A strange eery feeling enveloped her as she realised that she was not alone, someone was present and was climbing the parallel staircase mirroring her every move. Terrified she looked to see who it was. Disgusted by what she saw, a rotten body covered all over in blood, she tried to run. The ghoulish figure was fast approaching. She lost her balance, rolled down and fainted at the foot of the staircase. When she regained her consciousness she noticed the door at the corner slowly open. Half-eaten bodies walked towards her like Zombies. She was hurt and could not run. She screamed, shouted for help, but no one came to her rescue. She knew that her end was near. Saying a silent prayer, she closed her eyes and awaited her dreadful fate... Just then she heard a loud familiar voice. It was Ryder… he had come to save her…Slowly she opened her eyes and found herself in her bed. Her brother was wiping the sweat off her face. Oh! How HAPPY she was. He told her that she had a nightmare and that he had heard loud shouts and screams coming from her room. Realising that it was not advisable to leave her alone at home, he changed his party plans. When the parents returned Ryder and Jane narrated the crazy incident. The children were apologetic. They had realised their mistake and the value of obedience. The parents were relieved to find their children safe. RUCHA GODASE XI SCIENCE THE EVIL HOUSE FICTION 68
