Editorial | 2 EDITOR’S MESSAGE Dear fellow readers, greetings and welcome to yet another edition of the Penang Free School Annual Magazine. As this year’s Editor-InChief, it is my honour in leading the entire Editorial Board in designing this futuristic magazine. First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Penang Free School Editorial Board - from the Executive Board to the Production Crew. Without your efforts and constant support, this magazine would just be that of a figment of our imagination. Next, I would like to thank our teacher advisors, especially Mr Goh Seng Kar, our legendary Chief Advisor who has always been there for us, and guided us throughout the process of creating this magnificient work of art. There is no doubt in my mind, that this is the best magazine that has ever been designed and produced by the Penang Free School Editorial Board. We have created a new, stunning, and breathtaking magazine for all of our readers. It’s written and designed for the highest levels of visual ergonomics, minimalistic arrangements, striking layouts, and so much more. Central to the magazine’s design, were precision arrangements of each element to provide a satisfying and captivating experience, enabling our readers to feel invited and welcomed when absorbing the greatness of our magazine. It is with this design that we were able to offer absolute flexibility to add more information as well as a variety of stunning graphical designs. To compliment the extraordinaire of the magazine, we have incorporated the use of equally mesmerizing softwares, to bring you enhanced dynamic images and graphical designs tailored to maximise reader experience. With all these prestigious and ground-breaking techniques, we’ve created a product defined by information and design. They represent two very new, very powerful, highly impeccable reading experiences. JOHN KAVINRAJ PHILIP Editor-in-Chief Editorial Board Penang Free School
Editorial | 3 DEPUTY EDITOR’S MESSAGE With the Coronavirus Pandemic rampaging throughout Malaysia, it has pushed all of us to our limits. Many plans had to be deferred due to school exams, and most importantly, because of the Standard Operating Procedures. With all the obstacles thrown at us, it was virtually impossible for us to finalise the magazine by the end of the year. Nevertheless, we kept our heads held high and had to move mountains from time to time in order to bring you the work of art that you are holding in your hands today. In these modern times, our generation anticipates everything to be á la mode and contemporary. Therefore, we have created this magazine with a futuristic and minimal theme. We have racked our brains to come up with more new ideas everyday that complements the theme superbly. We have revamped many core segments of the magazine to enhance reader experience in the best possible way. From my perspective, the annual magazine plays a crucial role in preserving the school’s rich and diverse heritage dating back to the first publication of the magazine in 1909. As a result, Penang Free School’s Magazine was also the first ever school-published magazine in Malaysia. Last but not least, we hope that you can take pleasure in reading this breathtaking magazine with relish. Without further ado, we proudly present to you the Penang Free School Annual Magazine 2021. Au Revoir! WONG WEI LIANG Deputy Editor-in-Chief Editorial Board Penang Free School

ANDREW LIM CHONG HUAT President The Old Frees’ Association THE OLD FREES’ ASSOCIATION THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Congratulations to the Editorial Board for publishing the latest edition of the Penang Free School Annual Magazine despite all the challenges faced during the Coronavirus Pandemic lockdown. Well done to everyone involved in the publication. I am glad that until today the OFA is still strongly connected with Penang Free School. The OFA will continue to support and encourage our students towards achieving excellence in the academics and sports. The COVID-19 Pandemic has wrought havoc on the global economy and has changed the way we live. It has also most importantly disrupted our education system, with lessons having to go online and examinations being postponed or even cancelled. The year 2021 was not your usual year. It was a constant uphill battle for everyone as the aftermath of the pandemic was still in play. With new laws and Standard Operating Procedures, everyone’s lives was altered. Students had to go through constant and unpredictable switching from in-person classes to online classes. With the reality of uncertainty, it was a real uphill battle for everyone. Nonetheless, we stayed strong throughout the entire year and can only hope for a greater year next year. I am optimistic that all our students and teachers will continue to do the best that they can to maintain the school’s high standards and keep doing the impossible despite the ongoing pandemic. The OFA will continue to support the school to elevate academic standards while upholding the cherished traditions, values, and ideals of our 205-year-old school. I have walked through the aisle of Penang Free School and truly proud of my alma mater. For the students of Penang Free School, keep in mind that you are smarter than you know and more determined than you realized. Always try to do better than what you did yesterday. Enjoy all your moments in Penang Free School and always keep your flag flying high. FORTIS ATGUE FIDELIS Old Frees | 40

THE OLD FREES’ ASSOCIATION SYDNEY THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE T hank you again to the Editorial Board for inviting The Old Frees’ Association Sydney to write in this year’s Penang Free School Annual Magazine. Customarily, all of us come together to contribute to this write-up. 2020 and 2021 have been challenging years because of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Social distancing, working from home, and lockdowns have severely impacted the gatherings of the Old Frees here. In spite of the ever changing difficulties, we seized infrequent opportunities when there were no active cases in the community to meet on four occasions, albeit a few kept away. It was a testament to the spirit and camaraderie of the Old Frees that there was a desire to meet. As usual, the gatherings were characterised by fellowship and banter. It was so pleasing to meet after the lockdowns and restrictions. It was also most gratifying to sample mouth watering Malaysian food inclusive of kueh-kueh. It is our good fortune that many of our Old Frees and their partners are good cooks. Besides virtual social interactions, we share health and important community information. Covid-19 has unleashed many changes in society. There is a rise of anxiety and unease world wide. Social distancing has created loneliness and isolation to a level not experienced before. It is a credit to the Old Frees of Sydney, that we have continued our links and to express our fellowship. Another feature of Covid-19 has been the plethora of discussions on vaccines and the treatments of the virus. Not surprising that in any human endeavor, there would be a multitude of opinions and beliefs. Such differences have been maturely discussed and debated in our group. We are missing our laughter, fun and support. We are trying to live up to the Fortis part of our Motto. This event came just a few days after the Speech Day on 21st October 1956 which was officiated by the Chief Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra. This year, on 9th April 2021, Prince Philip passed away at Windsor Castle at 99 years old. In honour of his passing, we have brought a tale that occured more than 60 years ago that details the story of the Duke when he visited Penang Free School. Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to read was taken from the original Penang Free School Magazine of the year 1957 and includes the original photographs taken on that very day of the Duke’s arrival. THE VISIT OF HRH THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH Adapted from the Penang Free School Magazine of the year 1957 Any philatelist has by a stroke of luck discovered two rare stamps within a period of eleven days will have experienced the same thrill that pervaded Penang Free School in October 1956. At our Speech Day Ceremony on 21st October, we had the rare distinction of a visit to the school by the Chief Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra. Before the excitement of the Tunku’s visit had scarcely subsided, it was noticed that the headmaster had ordered that the school be repainted, whereupon one bright spark immediately observed that the Duke might be coming to Penang. Anyway, his remark was not received with enthusiasm and a boy in the vicinity gave him a retort in American slang, “Boy, but aren’t you nuttier than a fruit cake!” A few days passed, then lo and behold! The idle prediction assumed the substance of reality. The school was agog with the excitement on the reception of the happy news, but work was carried on as usual and everybody tried to keep as calm and cool as possible. At long last, the day arrived. The morning of the 31st October 1956 was by no means promising as dark low clouds hovered ominously in the sky. Nevertheless, the preparations for this rare occasion were carried out undauntedly. Instructions were issued by everybody to everybody else and, although an outsider might not see anything remarkable being done within the confines of the school premises, yet, had he stayed for thirty minutes in the school, he would have undoubtely sensed an undertone of apprehension and suspense. We were all anxious lest the elements spoil our day and prevent us from getting a close look at the Duke. Indeed, the weather conditions necessitated the arrangements for “payongs” to be made readily available. Added to this, the school’s telephone, in a fit of excitement, as it were, went out of order. Instructions again sallied from everybody to everybody else and this “omission was rectified with the greatest efficiency and despatch” - to quote one of our venerable masters. After having had a full-scale rehearsal, the school was more or less braced to receive the Duke without any embarrassing situations such as boys fainting or girls screaming. Indeed, the students were reminded that HRH the Duke of Edinburgh was not a film star and, therefore, no autographs should be solicitated or fragments of his suit taken home as souvenirs. Then it happened. The police escort rumbled into the school grounds with the Duke’s Rolls Royce and a few other motor-cars hard on their heels. The Duke of Edinburgh, Sir Donald MacGillivray, the High Commissioner of Penang, together with some unobtrusive plain clothes men emerged from the cars. The Duke, to everybody’s warm approbation, was the most cheerful personality, although attired in sombre blue. Features | 47
After being greeted by our headmaster, Mr J. E. Tod, our distinguished visitor signed our visitors’ book and, following that, he planted a casuarina tree of the conical pine species near our flagstaff to commemorate this visit of his. The Duke then did the most heart-warming though not a scheduled thing. He began to walk up to the masters who were standing in front of the assembled boys and had a chat with them. No doubt, a few extra minutes from his tight programme were usurped by us, not to mention the agony of anxiety which gnawed at the hearts of those who were responsible for HRH’s schedule, nevertheless, the glow of affection which was left behind when he departed more than compensated for it all. As the Duke was leaving the school field, the school was led by the School Captain in three rousing cheers. Turning back, the Duke waved his thanks and then he noticed some English ladies and gentlemen who were standing near the parapet of the first floor of the school building. Thereupon, the elegant Prince smiled at them and, upon his waving his hand, a lady fell off her chair. In a moment he was gone and sighs pregnant with different shades of emotions followed in the wake of the car. No matter what may be the feelings that were borne for the Duke then, the general concensus of opinion was, as my sensitive intuition informs me, that there could never be a more wonderful consort for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
