It has been a scheme which many of us have been thinking of for a long time. We call it the Free School Magazine. It is devoted mostly to school news, but there are also two or three pieces which will be of interest to everyone. We had hoped to be able to put in an “Old Boys” column but could not, unfortunately, find anybody to take charge of that part. Perhaps before our next issue an “old boy” will kindly come foward and volunteer to do this? We propose publishing the magazine three times a year, that is once a term. We confidently expect that next time we shall sell double as many copies. All “Old Boys” who wish to become subscribers (50 cents a year, or, 20 cents each copy) can do so by sending their names to the Secretary. We will, however, not waste any time in anticipation but will leave the magazine to the friendly criticism of its readers. Finally, we must not forget to thank the numerous contributors who came forward in such large numbers that we have had to hold over some pieces for the next issue. May the school magazine have a long life and never lack subscribers and contributors. Editorial Memories | 151

Due to the sudden rise in COVID-19 cases and the initiation of the MCO in early February, the Editorial Board was once again forced to overcome a tremendous obstacle. We have proven once again that we take our roles seriously and that we do not let such problems stop us from publishing the school magazine. The magazine you are reading now is the sole evidence that the Editorial Board is able to overcome any hardship that may come our way It is a testament of the editorial board abilities. With that being said, we, the editorial board members rise above all circumstances for your dreams and we hope you enjoy the magazine. ALVIN JOSEPH SECRETARY THE EDITORIAL BOARD FROM THE EYES OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD Greetings readers. We have produced yet another prestigious magazine for the year 2021. This year has been hectic as we weren’t able to attend physical classes in school and only having classes online. However, it had enabled the members of the Editorial Board to have more regular discussions regarding the school magazine. Not only that, it had also given the members more time to produce the magazine. As the Chief Business Officer, I admit, it was tough looking for sponsors, but thanks to the help of all the members of the Editorial Board, we managed to look for adequate number of sponsors. TEH WEI YAO CHIEF BUSINESS OFFICER Being a designer is not simply about choosing some things you happen to like and throwing them together to see what happens. It should be about a deep engagement with content and the construction of meaning. Some designers certainly have what it takes. During this tough times, designing meant creating a meaningful message despite us being busy during online learning. I really appreciate the passion and sacrifice made by all our contributors despite the lockdown that threatened to stop this wonderful production of the magazine. MOHAMMAD SAFARUDDIN CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER Editorial Memories | 152

FROM THE EDITOR MESSAGES FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF MR GOH SENG KAR To our Chief Advisor, I would like to personally thank you for all that you have done for us from the begining of our journey together. From the start till the end of this magazine’s production, you have guided us through all of the obstacles we faced and made sure we were always on the right path. Without your support and input, this magazine would not have became a reality. WONG WEI LIANG To my Deputy Editor, thank you very much for being there by my side throughout my term as Editor-In-Chief. Without your constant support and advice, I would not have had the mindset and courage to take on this role in leading this entire organisation. ALVIN JOSEPH To my Secretary, thank you for all those hours on survey analyses and data arrangements. You made the production of the magazine smoother and I appreciate all that you have done. TEH WEI YAO To my Chief Business Officer. From securing sponsorship deals with individuals and corporations, to networking with the Ministry of Education and The Old Frees’ Association. You played an important role in this magazine’s production and I am entirely grateful to have a friend like you. MOHAMMAD SAFARUDDIN Last but not least, to the youngest person ever to hold an executive position in the Editorial Board of Penang Free School.
