HAPPENINGS 54

HAPPENINGS 55

HAPPENINGS 56 Orientation Day The newcomers embarked on their initial journey through the gates of Penang Free School. Despite their nerves, they were filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation as they explored their new environment and began making new friends. Their journey commenced in the historic Pinhorn Hall, where eager seniors and dedicated teachers awaited to introduce them to their alma mater. Two seniors, Jeremiah Selva and Malique Ammar, took the stage as morning hosts and provided the Form One students with a glimpse into the school’s history through a montage video. Following this, the honorary principal and esteemed administrators delivered speeches, acquainting the students with the various departments available at Penang Free School. Mr. LK Loh, a distinguished member of the Old Frees association, introduced an application called WayFinder to help students access the school’s heritage more easily. The first day concluded with a guided tour led by the responsible Board of Prefects. Day two was just as lively as the previous day, with students gathering once again in the prestigious Pinhorn Hall. A group of seniors, including Vesyal, Malique, Jeremiah, Aiman, Lew, and Jayden, organized a coffee talk session. During this event, participating seniors engaged in discussions on various topics. Towards the end of the session, participants were encouraged to explore the booths set up by the school’s uniform bodies, societies, and game clubs. This allowed them to select associations that piqued their interest and would shape their secondary school experience.

HAPPENINGS 57 Teachers’ Day A sea of colours flooded the school as students and teachers wore their resplendent traditional attires to celebrate the special day. You name it, we saw it: baju Melayu, baju kurung, salwa kameez, kurtis, dhoti kurta, Tang suit and etc. The event was made more meaningful as teachers, parents and students brought mouth-watering delicacies and home-cooked food to fill up their bellies and liven up the occasion. The sharing of meal and the exchange of stories and delectable food and tit-bits reflected the harmonious interaction and delightful camaraderie among our students from various classes. What a sight to behold! The air of fun and cheer continued with a meaningful gesture of gift presentations to our beloved teachers who have worked diligently to keep our standards in education flying high and our virtues in check. It is certainly not an easy task to juggle paper work, lesson plans and discipline in Penang Free School but they have done an excellent job in doing so. The warm interaction among students and teachers certainly broke the monotony of the everyday lessons shared between them. Seizing the opportunity to level up the merry day, both got together and posed for pictures and selfies, not forgetting their free-style stance, finger heart signs and all. Indeed, it was a day to remember that school was not just a building or a premise for learning and getting good grades, but a meeting point for teachers and students to choose to create memories and make a history out of it. How I wish every day is a Memory Day! Happy Teacher’s Day!

HAPPENINGS 58 Cross-Country Run In an extraordinary turn of events, the weekend of July 14th was anything but ordinary for Frees. This marked the occasion of the third cross country event of the new decade, and it was an experience that left a lasting impact on all who participated. The stage was set at the Youth Municipal Park, where a gathering of eager students awaited the start signal. Despite the initial gloomy weather that caused a few nerves to flutter among the participants, the day’s fortunes shifted, and sunshine eventually graced the event. The atmosphere was electric, with parents enthusiastically joining the run to cheer on their children. Even a group of playful monkeys added an unexpected touch of excitement as they watched from the trees. The race commenced with the seasoned runners of Old Frees leading the charge. Students, parents, and teachers followed suit, forming a colourful procession of determination and anticipation. The route, designed to offer a perfect blend of challenge and enjoyment, allowed everyone to relish the fresh air and the scenic beauty of the surroundings. Along the way, a delightful sight awaited: the waterfall coursing through the Botanical Gardens, a visual treat that added to the adventure. Safety, a top priority, was assured with the collaboration of the state police, ensuring a secure environment for all participants. As the finish line drew near, the joy on numerous faces was palpable. Many participants secured commendable positions, motivating them to aim higher in future cross-country events. Meanwhile, students were treated to refreshments to keep their energy up until the awards ceremony. The event’s climax arrived with the recognition of the top 20 runners from each class. A highlight was the revelation that the ultimate victor of the cross country hailed from Hargreaves. The event culminated with a swift cleanup led by the students, leaving behind a space that had witnessed not just a race, but also a testament to unity and enthusiasm. In retrospect, the Penang Free School Cross Country 2023 was far from an ordinary event. It symbolised the spirit of determination, teamwork, and shared accomplishment. Undoubtedly, the memories etched during this event will linger on, a reminder of the power of perseverance and unity.

HAPPENINGS 59 Sports Day On the 22nd of July 2023, our school successfully organised their 98th annual sports day marking the second year this special event is held after the pandemic. This event has been long awaited by everyone, namely the seniors, juniors and the Old Frees. The cooperation among students and teachers during the preparation for the annual event turned out to be a great success. Participants trained almost every day and sometimes even skipped classes to get the best result they can for their respective houses. The indomitable Cheeseman House took the first place for this year’s sports day. This sport house had conquered most of the sport categories which resulted in them obtaining the title. Under the supervision of their committed captain and teachers, they overtook their own expectations. Other sport houses also did their best to win the title but they failed to overcome the victor. The event kick-started with a parade led by the school band and the recitation of the School’s Sport Oath by this year’s Athletics Captain, Sacchven Singh Paanu. It was followed by the performances of each sport house’s parade which were outstanding and entertaining. The colourful and gaily decorated house tents too caught the eyes of many spectators. Thereafter, the running competition took place. It was a great opportunity not only for the students, but for the Old Boys and staffs to unleash their talent in sports. Before the closing ceremony began, the crowd were entertained by the school band led by the drum major,. Their engaging and captivating performance caught the audience’s attention. Right after the show, the event continued with a prize giving ceremony for the medal achievers. The final performance by the band was the School rally to mark the end of the memorable day. Do not fret as the students’ enthusiasm in sports does not just end here as the inter-house competition is just around the corner.

HAPPENINGS 60 Mr Cheng’s Retirement Grandeur, surprises and melancholy are such words that one can use to describe the series of events that occurred during the retirement of one of our alma mater’s most beloved educator, Mr Cheng Chee Choong. A number of teachers and students shared their happiest and heartiest moments as they recounted their memorable times with our dear Monsieur Cheng. There is no doubt that his absence will surely be felt in the coming days ahead. Mr Cheng Chee Choong started his teaching journey in 1983 when he joined Maktab Perguruan Persekutuan Pulau Pinang (M4P) as a trainee teacher. After graduating from M4P, he was posted to La Salle Peel Road, Kuala Lumpur as a Maths & Science teacher in 1986. From 1991 to 1995, he furthered his studies in France, doing his first Degree in teaching French as a foreign language or Français langue étrangère (FLE) at the Université de Franche-Comté. In 1995, he was posted to Sekolah Menengah Sains Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin (SMSTSSS) where he taught French as a foreign language. While he was still in SMSTSSS, Mr Cheng decided to pursue his Masters in FLE at the Université de Clermont-Ferrand 2 (2000 - 2001). In February 2005, Mr Cheng joined Penang Free School as a French language teacher. On 24 August 2010, Mr Cheng became a Master Teacher of French (Guru Cemerlang). A testament to Mr Cheng’s teaching prowess can be seen through the oustanding achievements of his three prominent students. They were Quzairie b. Talib who won the first place in the 2010 Malaysia DELF exam; Ryan Nathaniel Cheng Zhi Han who was the top achiever in the 2021 Malaysia DELF A2 exam, and Jeremiah Selva who secured the second place in the 2021 Malaysia DELF A1 exam. Besides being a very dedicated and successful French teacher, Mr Cheng was the House Master of the Cheeseman Sports House, the teacher advisor for the Rover Scouts Crew and the Volleyball Club. Mr. Cheng illustrious teaching career in Penang Free School lasted for 18 years until he retired on 23 August 2023. Indeed, Mr.Cheng was a great role model. His 18 years of dedication, contributions and passion for the teaching of the French Language and his love for Penang Free School along with the students were as clear as a crystal. His love for his students never once wavered and the camaraderie that they shared were truly deep and affectionate. To honour his efforts, the sending-off event on the 23 August 2023 was conducted in English and in French. The latter, of course, is a direct nod to Mr Cheng’s significant role in pioneering the teaching of the French language in Penang Free School. The event commenced with the arrival of the school administrators and the hall instantly roared with the lively cheers and thunderous applause of students as the man of the hour, Mr Cheng Chee Choong strode in and acknowledged the admiration and respect that was showered upon him. Jeremiah Selva and Kaven Raj then continued with the accolades by providing the audience with the insights on how Mr Cheng has shaped, developed and transformed them and other students into individuals who are ever ready to seek growth and embrace new challenges beyond the borders of the school and our country. Their speeches were followed by the ones given by the Principal and teachers who also expressed their appreciation and tribute to a colleague who was truly a professional in heart and mind and a great motivator and friend to all. The guest-of-honour, Mr Cheng finally took the stage and he thanked the administrators, teachers and students for their kind gestures in honouring him and he spoke briefly on his vision in seeing Penang Free School continue the legacy of the learning of the French language in the lower secondary classes. After the speeches, there was a presentation of gifts and souvenirs from the various departments, teachers and students. The audience then sang a heartfelt birthday song which was followed by a poem recitation by Nordin Hilman Visser and Darrshan. Next, the Penang Free School Band rendered a few numbers which fired up the mood in the hall and brought the event to a close.

HAPPENINGS 61 A sombre mood then took over as the crowd stood up and bid their adieus to their dear colleague, teacher and friend. Nevertheless, Mr Cheng, the effervescent Monsieur overcame the atmosphere with his happy vibes and waved cheerily to them all with good wishes and joyful goodbyes. Au revoir, Monsieur Cheng. You’re the best!
