AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 3 | I would like to thank each of you for your efforts over the past year in advancing the work of the American Spaniel Club. Please pass on to all the volunteers working with your committees and within your zones how grateful we all are for their time and dedication. Through the efforts of the ASC Board and the club’s Finance Committee, we have established a sound budgeting process and responsible money handling procedures for all our events and committees. By adhering to our annual budget plan, the Board has clear guideposts for maintaining the club’s fiscal viability. Because of these efforts, the club has a strong financial foundation. Now that the American Spaniel Club and its members are coming out from under the COVID cloud, we are reinvigorating our outreach to the public through social media and the club’s website, events like Meet the Breeds, and through member club efforts in their communities. Our competitive events continued to enjoy strong support in 2022. Because of the efforts of Show Chairs, Jane Williams/Linda Donaldson, and their committee, ASC hosted another successful Flushing Spaniel Show in January. In July, Carol Pinto and the National Specialty Show Committee brought us all “Under the Big Top” at Purina Farms for an event that included conformation, obedience, rally, agility and several informative breeder education events. Agility chair, Vivian Hudson, and her committee hosted stand-alone agility trials in New England where she not only provided another venue for our agility exhibitors, but also used the events to promote ASC membership. I look forward to working with all the club’s volunteers and committees in 2023! President’s Message By DIANE KEPLEY, ASC President WELCOME BACK TO KNOXVILLE. I’M GLAD WE ARE ALL TOGETHER AGAIN IN 2023! riannon SAM & WILMA PARKER 8173 Red Mill Dr. West Chester, OH 45069-1718 Phone 513-759-0329

I have also summarized our current finances. Please note that not all of the invoices related to the Flushing Show have been received and paid, so the bank balance looks a little inflated. | 24 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB Hall of Fame 2023 INDUCTEES FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CLUB Rosalie and Carl Anderson were accepted to the ASC Hall of Fame, January 2023 for their contributions to the American Spaniel Club. Rosalie Anderson was active as a breeder and exhibitor in Conformation and Obedience, later becoming a judge in those venues as well. She was a Life Member of the American Spaniel Club, the West Coast Cocker Spaniel Club, and the Cocker Spaniel Club of Southern California with close to 60 years of dedication to the ASC and the Cocker Spaniel. Rosalie was a Zone IV Director, member of the ASC Board, member of the ASC Standard Committee, and an ASC-approved mentor conducting seminars and workshops on the Cocker Spaniel for ASC, specialty clubs and the Los Angeles Dog Judges Association. It was Rosalie’s words “Rebel that I am, I’m hopeful that our National Specialty can be moved around so it can be truly represented by all the members in all the Zones.” These words and through Rosalie’s efforts helped launch ASC’s roving National Specialty, the first being held in July in Oklahoma hosted by Zone 5, and the rest is “history.” Carl J. Anderson joined the club as a young man along with his beloved Rosie, later serving as President as well as many committees. You might say both he and Rosalie lived out their lives with the breed. Both were well known cocker spaniel judges and judged here and in many countries. They fit our Hall of Fame criteria as extraordinary members who always gave it all. Rosie passed away in 2018. Carl passed on Dec 2, 2022. He was 95 years young. Parti Colors & Browns for Pet and Show Parti Colors & Browns for Pet and Show Breeder of Merit and Breeder of Heart Sautee Nacoochee, GA

| 26 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 Happy New Year! Spring is a time for renewal and to consider all the positive things that are ahead for the American Spaniel Club and our members. We began 2023 with the 104th Flushing Spaniel Show in Knoxville TN. Congratulations to this year’s Best in Show winner—English Springer Spaniel, CH Telltale Bohemian Rhapsody shown by Robin Novack. The Best Cocker Spaniel in Show was ASCOB Cocker Spaniel GCH Color Me Banker’s Choice shown by Lisa Arnett. Congratulations to all the competitors in every breed and variety! ASC is grateful for all the hard work Jane Williams did in laying the foundation for a successful show. When she suffered some health setbacks in mid-2022, Linda Donaldson was able to use that groundwork to complete the work for the Flushing Spaniel Show. We are truly thankful for all the efforts of our show committee volunteers that made this show a success! The Cocker Spaniel National show committee is putting the finishing touches on the 2023 National which will be held again at Purina Farms in July. Get ready to dust off your boots and saddle up for a Wild West celebration! There will be all kinds of Western-themed fun as we celebrate our wonderful Cocker Spaniels. The show will not only feature events in conformation, agility, and other competitions, but it will also include popular breeder education programs, the opportunity for a variety of health screenings for our dogs, another fun-filled Foundation fundraising party, and the annual Top Dogs Awards Dinner. Full details can be found on the ASC website. Agility Chair Vivian Hudson is working on providing two stand-alone agility trials in New England this year - that’s in addition to the trial held at the National. These trials are a great way to encourage our agility members and provide an opportunity to promote ASC membership. Looking ahead work is already underway on the 2024 Cocker Spaniel National by show chair, Stephanie Kaul, and ASC Zone 4 members. Stay tuned for more details! We are reinvigorating some programs that were put on hold during the pandemic, including our active participation in Meet the Breeds nationwide with events in Florida and Texas in 2022, and just recently in New York City in January. This is one of the most important ways ASC can reach out to the public in a positive way about our breed and purebred dog ownership. ASC member participation is also resuming in therapy programs. To recognize the ASC member teams taking part in these programs, the Therapy Dog committee is currently developing standards and guidelines to give club recognition to members and their dogs. Their good work is a credit to us all! FLUSHING AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB SPA NIEL SHOW 2023 AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. Reports from the 141st Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 14, 2023 PRESIDENT'S REPORT Diane Kepley President FOUNDED 1881 • AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB MEMBER SINCE SEPTEMBER 19, 1889 continued >

| 28 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 FLUSHING SHOW The American Spaniel Club Foundation has published the latest findings on the cataract research being conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, and financial support is also being given to other research programs. A health survey sent to ASC members at the beginning of the year will help the Foundation focus on research of the greatest interest to members in the future. None of our club’s projects and programs can succeed without the dedicated volunteers who devote countless hours to ensuring their success. All of them deserve the club’s gratitude for the work they do. Finally, I would also like to thank all members of the American Spaniel Club for the honor and privilege of serving as your president for the past five years. I look forward to all we can accomplish together in the coming year. FINANCE REPORT Dee Torgerson Rismyhr 1st Vice President The Financial Committee continued to follow the two year budget that was set in motion by the prior financial committee. In general, nothing changed other than to monitor our budget items throughout the year. We worked closely with the Treasure and the show committees on the general finances as relates to the budget with the actual revenue and expenses. Details can be found in the Treasurer’s report. As a general reminder, for those that are new to the board and for club members, here is an overview of the process: ASC has a general budget that covers the operations of the club other than the specific show events. Each show event has a separate budget that is reviewed and approved by the ASC Board. The General Budget covers a two year period, looking forward. We budget both Revenue and Expenses. The ASC Fiscal year is October 1 to September 30th each year. In the attached documents, you will see the prior actuals, the budget for 2022 and the 2022 actuals. Additionally, you will see the 2023 budget that was previously approved by the board. I have added the budget for 2024. We exceed budgeted revenues in 2022 and had less expenses. I am not sure that trend will continue through 2023 and 2024. The 2024 budget is very conservative with an anticipated shortfall in revenues and increasing expenses. After review, if there are changes we feel should be made to the budgeted revenue or expenses for 2023 or 2024, please provide input. If there are no changes, please approve the 2024 budget. CORRESPONDING SECRETARY David Roberts The ASC Board met six times in 2022—four times via Zoom, one time at Purina Event Center, and one time in Knoxville. The Bulletin published four issues in 2022—3/22, 6/22, 9/22, and 12/22. We would like to thank the excellent content providers as well as the valued advertisers and members who contribute show photographs and candids. All of your contributions to the Bulletin are greatly appreciated. AKC is again hosting Meet the Breeds this year in various locations. Our first one for 2023 will be in New York City. The following ASC Life Members passed away last year: Judy Wright – Baldwinsville, NY (Dec. 28, 2022) James Duncan – Hinckley, OH (Oct. 6, 2022) Carl Anderson – Simi Valley, CA (Dec. 5, 2022) Joy Farlow – Greensboro, NC (Dec. 3, 2021) Carole Shute – Onatrio, Canada (Jan. 2022) Harold “Kap” Henson – Fredrick, MD - (Jun. 2021) Harriett Kamps – Sparks, MD (Apr. 22, 2022) Carol Dixon – Statesboro, GA (Jul. 23, 2022) Barbara Brickett – Lake City, FL (Aug. 6, 2022) Olga Mahlstede – Centerville, OH (Aug. 12, 2022) Let us have a moment of silence for these members. 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6 > OFFICERS' REPORTS Jackie Makoujy AKC Breeder of Merit www.MaxCockers.com [email protected] 201-410-4034

AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 29 | FLUSHING SHOW ZONE REPORTS ZONE 1 Per Ingar Rismyhr Zone I Director We had three meetings this past year, discussion on judges for ASC and how to make more people vote, we also did a little education at the CT specialties in April of 22 how to go over dogs and what to look for. We also had one co meeting with Laura Heidrich at the Indiana specialties in October. There was no major concerns from the membership. ZONE 2 Dale Ward Zone II Director American Spaniel Club members in Zone II have been getting back into more normal activities, with successful specialty shows being held in Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida. I did attend the show in Lexington, and plan to attend others this year. ASC members competed in agility, hunt tests, obedience, rally, and conformation, and many championships and titles were finished. Also CGC and Therapy dogs have been recognized in Zone II. Many Zone II members enjoyed attending the Annual Flushing Spaniel Show in Knoxville last January, and the Cocker Spaniel National Specialty in Gray Summit, MO, in July. We are all looking forward to 2023! ZONE 3 Laura Heidrich Zone III Director Zone 3 has not had a lot of discussion or requests. p^p We had a meeting jointly with Zone 1 and Zone 3 during the Salamonie/Skyline weekend of shows. We discussed voting for judges as the nomination ballot was just out. I printed out the ballots and brought them along in case anyone would need one. From past experience, this usually helps. We also discussed volunteerism and a few thought they would like to help more, but were intimidated by the atmosphere in the club. I informed them about the changes to the Bulletin and it was well received, especially the free copies to all the judges. There were positive comments about allowing non-members to purchase and advertise in the Bulletin. Zone 3 is organizing for the 2025 National. ZONE 4 Stephanie Kaul Zone IV Director 2022 brought a welcomed normalcy to Zone IV. With specialties and all-breed shows back in full force, it was great to have several opportunities to chat with members from Zone IV. We hosted a virtual zone meeting via Zoom and zone-wide email communications were sent throughout the year. I know of several new litters, new champions, new grand champions, group placements, rankings, hard-earned majors won, etc throughout our zone during this year. My sincerest congratulations to those zone members, their charges, and all involved with their successes. May 2023 bring all of us good health, good fortune, and good dogs! ZONE 5 Deann Jepson Zone V Director Deann Jepson reported that she continued to correspond with Zone 5 members and provided ASC activity updates via a Zone 5 membership email distribution list. This summer, Zone 5 members submitted creative theme ideas for the upcoming 2023 National Show, and all suggestions were compiled and discussed by the show’s committee. Thank you to all who provided input! It was very much appreciated! The majority of the 2023 National Show Committee are Zone 5 members who have been meeting regularly throughout the year to build out the 2023 show timeline and planning details. Activities in 2022 included, but were not limited to, securing the event site and hotel, designing a logo, creating a show budget, recruiting and filling open chair positions, coordinating with the Cocker Spaniel Specialty Club of Dallas to host a Regional Specialty, and showcasing sample merchandise during the 2022 July National show (see 2023 National Show report for further details.) 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

| 30 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 FLUSHING SHOW AKC DELEGATE Bruce Van Deman The following report presents highlights from the Delegate Committees and the AKC Delegate meeting held in December 2022, Orlando, FL. Highlights from the Dog Show Rules Committee • Chapter 6, Section 2 was discussed regarding adding language for clarity that notification must be included in the premium list if neutered or spayed entrants are permitted to compete in non-regular classes at an independent specialty or all-breed dog show that does not offer Groups or Best in Show. – Chapter 11, Section 8 it adds “and all other single entry non-regular classes” expanding the classes where neutered dogs or spayed bitches may be allowed to compete. • On January 1, 2023, the Onsite Show Secretary Program begins. The objective of the Onsite Show Secretary program is to provide small all-breed clubs and group clubs with an alternative to hiring a Superintendent to fully manage their event. Specific details are as follows: – The program requires an AKC-licensed superintendent to perform the pre-show work and then provide event documents and materials to an Onsite Show Secretary, who manages the day-of-show activities for the club, commonly referred to as a “package show” – Individuals that successfully complete an AKC approval process can be recognized as an approved Onsite Show Secretary and be allowed to manage up to eighteen all-breed or group shows per calendar year – The complete listing of AKC-Approved Onsite Show Secretaries will be posted on the AKC website. Currently, there is no fee to become an approved Onsite Show Secretary • Effective January 1, 2023, dogs entered in regular classes will have the opportunity to earn championship points for Group 2, 3, and 4 placements. As defined in Chapter 16, Section 2 of the AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows, a dog in its breed competition at a show which has placed Winners, and which also has finished second, third, or fourth in its group competition at the same show shall be awarded championship points figured at the highest point rating of any breed or recognized variety of any breed entered in the show and entitled to winners points in its group, exclusive of any breed or variety that placed higher in the group class. Update on activities from the Delegate Advocacy Committee and By-Laws Committee • The Delegate Advocacy and Advancement Committee recently sent a survey to the Delegate body regarding Delegates being allowed to charge a fee for judging. The overall response to the survey was favorable for a change to the Bylaws to allow judges to charge fees as their fellow judges do. Historically, the restriction on Delegate judges being able to charge a fee has come before the Delegate body several times and each time was voted down. For context, this provision to the By-Laws was enacted in 1934. The next step is for the Bylaws Committee to review and pass along to the Board for review and then to the Delegate Body for a vote. Highlights from the Canine Health Committee • It was reported that in 2022, CHF awarded over $3.4 million in 54 research grants across 18 different research program areas including multiple educational grants • Grants included work on the following; Dalmatian Blood Group, Congestive Heart Failure, Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease, Epilepsy (3 Grants), Hyperthermia, Canine Gut Health and a Grant which assesses the potential for computer models to predict performance and health traits in Working Dogs Highlights from the Parent Club Committee • Update on the progress of the sub-committee that is working on the AKC Purebred Preservation Bank. A recent position paper on this topic authored by sub-committee Chair, Jerold Bell, is provided to the ASC Board for review. (Filed separately) Highlights from the Delegate Meeting • Dennis Sprung, AKC President, provided the following address: STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6 > STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS

AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 31 | FLUSHING SHOW continued > > STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS – “We are ending the year at an all-time high. In 2022, more than 25,000 events were held, with a total of approximately 3.5 million entries. The AKC is grateful to each of the exhibitors, clubs, and judges that made these incredible numbers possible, including those of our AKC National Championship, the largest dog show in North America with over 9,300 entries. On another note, registration continues to be in a positive position with litters slightly higher, however, individual dog registrations are down about 9%. Looking ahead to 2023, there are numerous marketing initiatives planned to enhance our brand awareness, encourage participation in AKC sports, reach new dog owners, and improve our customers’ experience. Lastly, we are thrilled to bring AKC Meet the Breeds back to New York City after more than two years of COVID detours. We are very fortunate to return to the Javits Center with ample space and proud to report that more than 120 clubs have signed up to educate the public about their breeds. Continued to directly sponsor five veterinary research programs. – Primary in our efforts is the continued years of support of the cataract research led by Dr. Aguirre and his research team at the University of Pennsylvania. Through a genetic study grant given to the University, going forward the Foundation is only responsible for research supplies and materials. A new experienced genetic investigator has been added to the existing team and those costs are covered by the University grant. 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

The Principal Investigator is Dr. Steven Dow Colorado, State University. – Genetics of Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma in American Cocker Spaniels. Principal Investigator: Dr. Sara Thomasy, DVM, Ph.D. University of California, Davis – Plasminogen-activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and Impaired Fibrinolysis in Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. Principal investigators Dr. Tracy Stokol at Cornell University and Dr. Steven Friedenberg, at the University of Minnesota. 2. Through a revitalized rescue effort, the Foundation worked to ensure that every Cocker Spaniel has a good home and adequate veterinary care by providing financial assistance to and promoting a national network of affiliated local rescue organizations. 3. We initiated a program to provide education and information on health and research topics that promote intelligent breeding, care, and knowledge of Cocker Spaniels. We held the first of these sessions in December with a presentation by Dr. Tracy Stokol on blood diseases available live and recorded on our website through the Zoom platform. Dr. Stokol is leading one of our supported research projects. Our strategy is to try and expand this education effort in 2023 through a network of noted research scientists and canine experts using recent legacy-giving contributions. In 2022 we also launched three other strategic initiatives. • This year the Foundation reviewed and made changes and updates to our Bylaws. Among these was the creation of Foundation Board of Director term limits similar to those of the ASC. In addition, to improve communications with the ASC Board, we added two ASC Board-appointed liaisons to serve annually on the Foundation Board. Our updated bylaws are visible on our Foundation website. • We formed a new Finance Committee supported by the Raymond James advisory investment firm that reports to the Board on recommending financial planning strategies to ensure our continued fiscal security. • It has been almost a decade since the Foundation conducted a health survey within our fancy on the disease and health concerns of breeders and owners. The results of such a survey are vital in directing where the Foundation should focus our search for creating and funding new research programs or supporting existing ones. In January of 2023, we will launch a confidential and secure health survey of the Cocker fancy so we can collect current data to drive our future research funding. • We have formed a discussion group called the Spaniel Health Initiative with the intent to share health and research focus, programs, and funding across the clubs and their foundations. We hope to find commonality among the spaniel breeds where we can leverage and fund research together as a group. Included in this group, at this time, are the English Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, Welsh Springer Spaniel, and Clumber Spaniel national breed club foundations. The Foundation Board thanks all the members of the American Spaniel Club for your support of our programs and initiatives as we look forward to a continued close relationship in the future. ASC WEBSITE COORDINATOR Deann Jepson Deann Jepson, as website coordinator, remained responsive to website content requests, such as those from the ASC President and Show Chairs. She continued to update additional website pages as indicated, and in coordination with committee members, created the ASC Member Clubs Toolbox on the website. Throughout the year, she set up several items in the ASC store, assisted users who had website questions and/or needed log-in assistance, updated show information as submitted, and ensured the ASC board meeting minutes were posted to the members’ side of the website. • ASC website activities also included the following: • Added new pictures to several header banners and pages. • Created the 2022 National show web page and updated it as information was received, including posting of the premium and show results. 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 35 | FLUSHING SHOW continued > > STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS • Set up the 2023 Flushing Spaniel and 2023 National show web pages and added information as received. • Designed several web pages within the ASC store for the 2022 and 2023 Flushing Spaniel shows and 2023 National show, including the creation of fillable forms, to collect online payments for show activities, such as reserved seating, grooming reservations, breeder seminars, trophy/rosette donations, obedience/rally donations, and vendors. • Built a donation button on the home page for users to easily navigate to the ASC store. • Posted announcements for members throughout the year on ASC’s home page, such as: – ASC President Messages – ASC Code of Ethics Revision – January 2024 Cocker Spaniel Judges Ballot – Save the Date – 2023 National Show – National Nominating Committee – July 2024 National Show Judges Ballot – Membership Dues Renewal Notice – 2023 Flushing Show Premium – Upcoming Specialties and Agility Trials Deann continues to need pictures to keep the website fresh, and ASC members are encouraged to submit their camera-ready pictures for consideration at deejep91@ gmail.com. Member suggestions and ideas are welcomed. BREEDER EDUCATION Linda Pitts In 2022, Breeder’s Education had several presentations planned at the National Specialty in a July. Although the Embark presentation did not happen as planned, there was a puppy evaluation with Bonnie Pike, Debbie Knight, and me. We each have our thoughts on our own litters, stacked and moving, which were presented to attendees. Later that weekend, we had a Breeder’s Roundtable discussion, which was very well received. Plans are in place for CERF eye exams in July 2023 at the National by Dr. Adam Stafford, we are in the process of finalizing plans for OFA hips, patellas and thyroid on site as well. This will be in addition to another round of puppy evaluations with more to be added later. BREEDER REFERRAL Tom Dowell The breeder referral listings dropped some in 2022. We have 21 breeder’s listings with website link for $840.00 and 58 breeders with the regular listing at $580.00 for a total income of $1,420.00. I would be happy to continue as Breeder Referral Chair if the board so desires. BREED STANDARD COMMITTEE Kathleen Patterson Since early fall 2022 the Standard Committee has been involved with AKC’s Canine College initiative. This is a project to create an educational program for aspiring judges on AKC’s website to supplement the ASC program Nancy Gallant’s Judges Education Committee has developed. The Standard Committee consists of a member from each zone—Per Rismyhr (Zone 1), Marilyn Spacht (Zone 2), Lisa Arnett (Zone 3), Judy Bjelland (Zone 4), and Julie Virosteck (Zone 5)—who are actively involved, and I very much appreciate their commitment. The Canine College program is created in four stages. Stage 1 identifies responsible parties and has them meet with the AKC staff in a webinar to determine future activities. The committee has completed this portion of the program. Stage 2 consists of scheduling and filming examples of the breed as well as gathering appropriate photos and videos for inclusion in the course. This is where we are working and anticipate it taking 4-5 months depending on the timely availability of images. The responsible AKC group is videotaping in Orlando, Portland, and Louisville between now and the end of the first quarter of 2023. Several ASC members have generously agreed to bring some retired dogs to Orlando for filming. Subsequent images may be captured during 2023. Additionally, past videos available on AKC TV will be reviewed. We have requested (in the December Bulletin) that ASC members submit photos for use in the Meet the Breed portion of the program and will hopefully have them to review early next year. We will also be looking at the old AKC breed videos to see if any of that material is usable. Once all this is completed, we move to the next stage. Stage 3 also takes several months as this is when the AKC team uses the material sourced above and develops the course elements for review, revision, and approval by the committee. After the Standard Committee approves the course content created above, Stage 4 consists of review by AKC’s 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

| 36 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 FLUSHING SHOW > STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS Judging Operations Department and the Field Staff. Our goal is to have a Cocker Spaniel course available in the AKC Canine College this time next year (2024). EDUCATION - JUDGES Nancy Gallant We had several Judges Education seminars in 2022. At the 2022 ASC Flushing Spaniel Show, a comparison of spaniels was presented by Douglas Johnson and was well attended. There was also a seminar/workshop presented at the ASC Cocker Spaniel National in July. The 2023 Flushing Spaniel Show will feature seminars in Cocker Spaniels, Field Spaniels, and Boykin Spaniels. Cocker Spaniel seminars were also presented in Arizona in February and in Texas in July. The seminar in Texas was presented by Sam Houston McDonald. EDUCATION - PUBLIC Diane Kepley The American Spaniel Club was represented in 2022 at two successful Meet the Breed events. The events were held under the auspices of the AKC’s new venture, which is an effort to expand outreach beyond the traditional sites in New York City and Orlando FL. One was held in April in Tampa FL, the other in Dallas in June. Volunteers in Zones 2 and 5 participated and helped to provide the public with valuable information on Cocker Spaniels and the ASC. We are looking forward to the next Meet the Breeds event in January 2023 in New York City and anticipate the scheduling of other events during the year. The club’s other primary method of outreach to the public and ASC members, in addition to the ASC website, is our main Facebook page, and Facebook pages related to ASC events. The Facebook pages mirror much of the information found on the ASC website, expanding the club’s online presence. Use of the Facebook page in 2022 was the highest in January, July, and in the weeks prior to the 2023 Flushing Spaniel Show. The peaks in usage correspond to updates on major club events. It should be noted that the annual reach on Facebook in 2022 increased by 73% compared to 2021. Reach is a measure of the number of people who saw any content on the page. The number of times the page was visited in 2022 increased by more than 50% over 2021. The posts which received the highest number of “likes” were related to information on the Flushing Spaniel Show, the National Specialty, and the ASC Bulletin. Facebook continues to be an important part of the ASC outreach to the public as well as the purebred dog community and the ASC membership. FIELD COMMITTEE Vickie Dahlk The ASC Field Committee along with the Cocker Spaniel Hunting Enthusiasts of Wisconsin held an AKC hunt test in July 2022 at the State Mazomanie, WI dog training grounds. WI. The ASC Field Committee members also joined with the CSHE for an AKC field trial in September in Wisconsin. We are looking forward to a great year in 2023. Please contact me with any questions you may have regarding field events at [email protected] FOREIGN LIAISON Karin Linde Klerholm During 2022 we have had two new Foreign Members joining the ASC: • Amy Manser, United Kingdom • Kazuyo Nagasaka, Japan The ASC Flushing Spaniel show in Knoxville, TN once again had foreign visitors from the UK, Canada, Peru and Denmark. Unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to visit the ASC National in St. Louis, MO in July, but I am sure there were foreign visitors at this show as well, enjoying all the beautifully presented Cockers at this premiere event of the breed. During the upcoming year I will continue making personal contact over Facebook and other social media with breeders and fanciers around the world, spreading the word on the benefits of becoming a member of the ASC. HALL OF DISTINCTION REGISTRY Jeanne S. Grimm DVM In July 2022, the ASC Hall of Distinction inducted six (6) new dogs into the Producers section. Five (5) dogs received their ROM and one (1) received the LOM-HT award. There were seven (7) dogs inducted into the Performance section in 2022. The breakdown was: • Agility – 3 • Field – 1 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

Show Chair With Jane Williams recent health issues this has been a challenging yet interesting process. Plans have gone exceedingly well and our first sizable task, the Premium List, was accomplished with only minor issues. The Foy Trent team was exceedingly helpful in this task, with the assistance of Marlene Ness, Diane Kepley, Deann Jepson, Kim Vavolo, and the various Breed Liaisons whose able assistance cannot be underestimated. Working with the staff at the Marriott we prepared the food menus, meeting rooms and other logistics necessary for the show preparation. Marlene Ness, Lindy Bennett, Laurie Foley, Stephanie Kaul, and others engaged in various fund-raising efforts for both the Regional Specialty and Flushing show raising slightly over $10,000 in trophy pledges and other fund-raising activities. As I write this report (late December) it appears that the tack room will be sold out. All our contract commitments have been met and we are looking forward to a successful show. JULY 2023 COCKER SPANIEL NATIONAL Deann Jepson “Saddle up!” for the 2023 Cocker Spaniel National Specialty Show on July 20-22, followed by Zone 5’s Regional Specialty hosted by the Cocker Spaniel Specialty Club of Dallas on July 23. Planning for the show is well underway, and the show committee has been meeting regularly to prepare for its schedule of full-filled activities, including obedience, rally, and agility trials. It will be held at Purina Farms with the Wildwood Inn as the host hotel. Fully executed contracts for both the venue and hotel are in place. The show’s logo resembles a “Wanted” poster from the wild west and this western theme will be reflected in the decorations, merchandise, and activities. So, plan to dress up in your best boot skootin’ attire for the Annual Dinner and other events! 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

The process to get the Foy Trent contract in place is underway. Makalah Boyer is the agility superintendent. LEGAL CHAIR Linda G. Moore Dear Officers and Directors of the American Spaniel Club: In 2022, my primary responsibility was reviewing ASC contracts, with particular attention to ASC’s hotel contracts and ensuring the force majeure provisions in all ASC contracts adequately protect ASC should there be a resurgence of COVID-19. As always, I enjoy being able to assist ASC with these matters. ASC LEGISLATIVE LIAISON REPORT (position vacant) PERFORMANCE - AGILITY Vivian Hudson This committee serves as a liaison between the agility community and ASC and in a consultative role to the ASC Board. Another important part of this Committee is to promote new membership, which it actively does especially during the National Specialty each July. This committee has assisted many performance individuals in submitting and being accepted to membership, through contact at the National Agility Event. The 2022 ASC Standing Agility Committee members, consisting of Stacie Baumbarger, Dana Dow, Dr. Jeanne Grim, Dr. Sylvia Martinez, and Chair, Vivian Hudson, did not have a group in person meeting during 2022 but communicated through email. As well, four of the five members attended the 2022 National and three were part of the National agility committee. Besides working extensively with the annual ASC National Agility Committee, this Committee also promoted and assisted holding an ASC stand-alone agility trial. We held two days of agility trials in Amherst, NH in June, which was attended by cockers and handlers from four different states. The trials were extremely successful, as entries filled and yielded a profit of over $3,000 to ASC. The National Agility Trials are always a thrill to see so many cockers from all over the country compete. The 2022 National provided hundreds of ribbons, special rosettes, awards, and medallions to the sixty plus cockers entered on Cocker Only Day. The committee also approved adding two new special awards last year (The Star Award and the Capital City Cocker Club Award), which we foresee continuing in the future. As the Committee looks forward to another year, we wish to thank everyone who volunteered in any way to assist in making the stand-alone and the National trials a success. As this committee continues to promote our breed through agility, we again invite everyone to be involved in another year of ASC excitement. We encourage you to plan now to attend our stand-alone trial in New Hampshire on June 3-4 and the National which will be held at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, MO. We are so fortunate to have four days of agility at our National. The dates for 2023 are July 20-23 with Laura English and Mary Mullen judging two days each. If you wish information regarding agility, wish to volunteer, or have questions, please contact Vivian Hudson at [email protected]. You are also invited to our Facebook page for more information, which will be up and running after the new year (American Spaniel Club – Agility 2023 Cocker Spaniel National). PERFORMANCE - COMPANION No report submitted. TELLER COMMITTEE James Davis Conformation judges for ASC July 2024 are Billie Hayes and Mariecel Torres-Young for regular classes and Astrid Lawrence for Futurity. The Board has asked for the vote totals to be published. Here is that information: • Total ballots received: 68 (one ballot was ineligible) 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

| 42 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 FLUSHING SHOW > STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS continued > • Regular Breed Judges (members vote for up to two) – Billie Hayes - 46 – Mariecel Torres-Young - 30 – Genea Jones - 26 – Jacqueline Stacy - 23 • Futurity Judges (members vote for one) – Astrid Lawrence - 43 – Kerry Leonard – 24 THERAPY DOG COMMITTEE Joyce McIntyre The ASC Therapy Dog Committee’s goal is to inform, mentor, and give presence to therapy dog teams that volunteer to those in need of comfort, joy, and companionship through scheduled visits to facilities, libraries, events, schools, and any place the teams can make a difference. During 2022, I have written articles in each of the Bulletin publications with emphasis on therapy dog teams, and how they are navigating our “new normal” without being able to visit the facilities we were used to going to in past years In 2021 most, if not all, therapy dog visits were suspended. I am an evaluator for one of the registries, and I was not able to host therapy dog tests. The facilities where most teams volunteered were not allowing volunteer programs because of COVID. During 2022 things improved as more people became vaccinated and there were registries that allowed the dogs to visit under their protocols. While many facilities remained closed to in-person visits at the end of 2022, some teams have been able to begin visiting by following health and safety requirements. That has meant facilities and therapy teams having to think “outside the box” and find ways to continue being connected to the people that benefit from therapy dog visits. Some facilities allow window visits which connect the residents of nursing homes, assisted living, or retirement facilities with their therapy teams. Some teams had life-size cutouts of their dogs made and then gifted them to the facilities. Zoom meetings were created to bring the teams and the people that needed to see their fur friends safely together. This has been very successful with library programs where children can read to the therapy dogs from their home. I have been actively involved with these Zoom meetings for almost three years, and my therapy dog enjoys hearing her friends’ voices. And more places are beginning to be open to in-person therapy dog teams visits. Those teams that are visiting in person are doing so successfully. It is the ASC Therapy Dog committee’s hope that our therapy teams could be recognized in some way. It would be an honor to the therapy dog to have a title of ASC Therapy Dog. This could include a medal or keepsake and certificates. The requirements for this title/ honor could be verified. I have suggested that therapy dogs owned by ASC members be recognized but to date nothing has been planned in that direction. This could be a one-time recognition of Cockers registered by an organization with proof provided. I encourage this to be given thought beginning with 2023 and rules to become an ASC Therapy Dog put in place. This likely would not require a large budget. I would appreciate thought be given to this idea and action taken. The committee wishes to get the message to other members of ASC to think about pet therapy for the dogs. We are positive in thinking we will be able to test more dogs and have more in-person visits going forward. Our goal is also to make people aware of these special teams. We encourage anyone who has a Cocker Spaniel that they feel has the temperament, loves people, and desires to be around them to socialize their Cocker within safety requirements of their area. It is possible to teach basic obedience, find a therapy dog group and certify, and take them safely to places that allow therapy dogs. TOP DOG COMMITTEE Jeanne S. Grimm DVM This committee tracks the top cocker spaniels in both conformation and performance events, as well as the top producers. The Top Dog Catalog has been printed each year since 2005. It recognizes the top cocker spaniels in conformation, agility, obedience, hunting, rally, and tracking. The catalog also includes title statistics, ASC awards and a list of the dogs being inducted into the ASC Hall of Distinction. We will continue to recognize the top cocker spaniels in the top dog catalog and award rosettes to the owners at the ASC National Specialty each July. 2022 ANNUAL REPORTS 6

FLUSHING SHOW > STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS Kathleen Egeland-Brock has the task of tracking the top conformation cocker spaniels as well as the top producers. I continue to follow the performance cockers who are busy earning new titles and competing in new events. Beginning in 2021, all top dog owners who are not ASC members are required to purchase their top dog rosette. All top dog catalogs are printed in color and sold by pre-order only. The budget includes rosettes for ASC members and mailing of rosettes and catalogs to those not in attendance at the ASC cocker spaniel national specialty. VERSATILITY AWARD COMMITTEE Jeanne S.
