| 70 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 That age-old adage certainly applied this year at the 2023 ASC Flushing Spaniel Show, as some of the top competitive groomers from all over the United States and Canada came to assist handlers and breeders prepare dogs for the high stakes and spotlight of the Spaniel Club show ring. The group traveled to Knoxville to learn more about the Cocker Spaniel, improve their knowledge of the breed, fine tune their technique to groom each dog so it adheres to the standard, and gain more hands-on experience while working on dogs bred and shown by some of the best handlers and breeders in the country and around the world. Without question, the arrangement was a win-win for all. The handlers and breeders were thrilled to have such outstanding and enthusiastic assistance, saying, “It was great to have someone I could trust to get the dogs ringready. They were amazing, had tremendous work ethic, and upbeat attitudes.” From the groomers’ perspective, after spending the weekend at the show and leaving with new experiences and expanded knowledge of the breed, several who have never competed in AKC shows are now considering trying their hands in the conformation ring. Most of them are nationally-certified master groomers, a title that requires many hours of training. They also must pass rigorous qualifying tests. Several have represented the United States and Canada as members of “Groom Team” and have won in international competitions representing their country. Among the group members was Mackenzie Murphy, the top-ranked sporting dog competitor in the United States who was also #1 Cocker Spaniel groomer at the world grooming competition. She won out over competitors from 27 countries and has also won multiple competition placements and Bests in Show at other prestigious events. Another member – Macie Pisa – was the winner of “Pooch Perfect,” a television show featuring top competitive groomers. She, along with several of the other participants, have Bests in Show wins and multiple placements in grooming competitions with Poodles, Bichon Frises, Bedlington Terriers, as well as Cockers, and have been nominated for and received numerous awards as leaders in the pet grooming industry. Competitive groomers, like dog handlers, spend most of their weekends traveling the country to compete. To qualify, they must have a healthy, well-trained dog, that is a good representative of the breed and is in full show coat that has not been trimmed for at least six weeks. Each competitor is given an allotted amount of time to complete the dog’s groom (for Cockers, two hours) while judges are observing their technique. After the grooming is completed, they are judged on the accuracy and over all look of the dog, including how well the groom meets the requirements of the breed standard. A win or placement can be lost simply on the basis of a small tangle, a hair out of place, or a clipper mark. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK... AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 71 | Some of the groomers in Knoxville have already attended and competed in AKC and CKC events with a variety of breeds and have also worked as assistants to dog handlers. When asked what they learned from their Flushing Show experience, all were enthusiastic. Helen Shafer, who worked for Kim Vavolo for the weekend, said, “I had the chance to work on dogs from many breeders, all with different hair textures and in different condition. It was a unique opportunity to hone my skills.” Jessica Ogle, who spent the weekend assisting Marlene Ness, observed, “I learned so much about proper structure, which of course helps me understand the placement of hair and where to trim or card the coat to fit the structure properly.” Macie Pisa, who assisted Lisa Arnett, commented “We had such valuable lessons on structure – and had the chance to work on some of the most beautiful dogs in the country. What a gift to be able to trim and tweak them every day!” The groomers were also pleased because they were able to share some of their knowledge with the handlers and breeders. Canada’s Nadia Bogelli, who worked with Marlene Ness, said, “Everyone has different ways of grooming and presenting their dogs. It has been awesome to share and learn with everybody here.” Charlene Walker commented, “We had fun sharing our different prepping techniques and grooming styles – and it was a pleasure because everyone was open minded.” Aside from all the other positive outcomes of this venture, several of the groomers completed ASC membership applications before leaving Knoxville and are already looking forward to and planning for the Nationals in July at Purina. And that will be terrific news for ASC handlers, breeders, and everyone involved with Cocker Spaniels. In the words of one of the handlers, “We all should be excited to have them as part of our Cocker Spaniel family.” Mackenzie Murphy (left) and Gavyn Freeman Helen Schaefer (from left) Macie Pisa, Charlene Walker, Jessica Ogle, and Nadia Bongelli going over structure with Mark Ragusa Macie Pisa (left) and Allyson Parnham > MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

| 72 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 Since I have recently brought home a new puppy, I thought I would share snapshots of our early training journey, to give you some ideas of things you can do with your puppies. I am active in several performance sports, but the majority of my early training is in basic foundation behaviors that will also contribute to a well-rounded companion dog. Before I talk about Harlow, here are a few things that I do with puppies before they leave home. When the puppies are around 4 weeks old, I start taking them outside. My goal isn’t housetraining (even I don’t start them that young!), rather I am simply exposing them to a new, safe environment. This is my first step in teaching them resilience and to cope with change in a positive manner. Puppies learn coping mechanisms and resilience from birth. A variety of positive experiences will help puppies grow into stable, confident puppies. When bringing a puppy home, there are so many possibilities with regards to training it can be overwhelming. What to do? Where to start? It would be so easy to just start throwing everything at your puppy, trying to take full advantage of this period of huge learning. Puppies are like sponges and it is so tempting to try to cram as much in their puppy brains as possible. The fact is, we do have to let puppies be puppies too. We can’t just treat them like small robots, just waiting to be programmed with what we want them to know. In the first couple of weeks, it’s all about teaching the puppy that learning is fun and training sessions are a time to be looked forward to. I generally use their meal times for training purposes, rather than just feeding them out of a bowl. With Harlow, I started with simple commands such as sit, down and hand touches. Yes, even with my conformation dogs, they learn sit from day one. I teach a nice tuck sit, where the pup’s front feet stay planted and the bum comes forward as the head goes up. This sets us up for success if we decide to train for competitive obedience or rally down the road. Most people teach a rock back sit – the trainer holds the treat above the dogs head, until they drop their bum into a sit. This causes the front feet to move back, and if the dog was in heel position, this would cause them to move out of heel position. Once a dog learns a rock back sit, it can be very difficult to change that to a tuck sit, so if you are at all considering obedience or rally, I highly recommend starting out with the tuck sit. Rather than holding the treat directly above your puppy’s head, you hold it up and forward, so they are reaching forward as their head comes up. This causes the rear to tuck in to the front feet wherein heel position would be maintained. In that same session we worked on a sphinx down, sometimes called a fold back down. It sounds much fancier than it is. With your puppy in a sit, you use a treat and move it in towards their face, and then down between their paws. Ideally this will cause the puppy to back up into themselves, until lying down is the easiest option. Harlow struggled with this exercise – I think it took us five or six sessions until she really understood. This isn’t a necessary skill to teach, the fold back down, unless you are interested in the higher levels of competition obedience or rally, but it’s one I teach to all of my dogs, regardless of the path I think they will take in their performance careers. It’s a fluid motion that doesn’t require any of the feet to move when executed from a stand, so it’s clean looking and simple. It is a nice skill to have for position changes, and it is critical to preventing the dog from creeping forward on the drop on recall and command discrimination exercises in open obedience or the signal exercise in utility. Training Growing Up Harlow By KELLY LADOUCEUR, KLAD Cockers » [email protected] WHEN FIRST STARTING TRAINING, I KEEP IT SIMPLE, AND I KEEP IT FUN.

AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 73 | continued > One of the other things we worked on during that first session was a hand touch, which I teach every dog I work with, even the ones I just show for friends. It’s such a simple thing to teach, and it can be really grounding for dogs in times of stress or fear. I present my hand to the dog in a “stop” gesture. Typically the dog will sniff it, and when they do I say yes, or I click my clicker. This is something dogs figure out very quickly, and it becomes an automatic behaviour for them in short order. The good part of this is that when the dog is stressed or afraid, I can ask for a touch, and it’s so ingrained that they do it automatically, and it can help bring them out of their funk. This behaviour can be used down the road for teaching a number of skills, including the very beginning stages of heeling. The last thing we worked on in that first session was spin and twist. Spin is a circle in one direction and twist is a circle in the other direction. Most dogs have a preference for one direction over the other, so you might have to work a bit harder to get the off direction to be nice and smooth. Spins and twists can be used as a part of heeling, but honestly, I teach them because they’re fun. I use them a lot in the show ring to keep my dogs engaged, because standing around and waiting can be very boring otherwise. Plus, they’re cute and the people watching always enjoy seeing the silly pet tricks. Other things that I like to work on with puppies are 101 Things To Do With A Box (originally by Karen Pryor). If you do a Google search you should get tons of hits for a description of the exercise, but basically it’s a great way to introduce both your puppy and yourself to shaping a behaviour. It teaches the puppy that the lack of a click (or yes) doesn’t mean they’re wrong and should quit, but that they’re not quite right and they should keep trying. It’s a great way to get your puppy excited about trying new things and offering behaviours, which will definitely come in handy along your training journey together. > TRAINING I also like to use my clicker to shape a “go to mat” behaviour. It’s very similar to 101 Things To Do With A Box, but the end behaviour is pre-defined in your mind. I just lay a mat on the floor and start marking the dog for putting a foot on it (I use a clicker for my marker, but you can use the word yes or anything you like). Once they’re good at that, I up the ante and ask for two feet on the mat, then three feet, then all four feet. Once they are purposefully placing themselves on the mat with all four feet, I will start cueing a down behaviour (but you can choose any behaviour you want). It won’t take long for your puppy to figure out that you want them in a down when they go on the mat, which is a very nice skill to have in your pocket. I use this behaviour when I take my dogs to classes, and it is also handy when I’m preparing their dinner or even my own meals. I have a specific mat that I use for this that I don’t leave laying around, because I want the appearance of that mat to become part of their cue to get on and lie down. With my passion for nosework, I also start my guys off with scent work from day one or two. Harlow came home at 7 weeks, and at 4.5 months old she is doing container searches and very small area searches. I am keeping everything fun for now and working a lot on building up the foundation behaviours that she will need throughout a nosework career. Honestly, the sky is the limit when you bring a new puppy home. Regardless of what your planned journey together entails, there are things you can do right from the start to get your puppy engaged and excited about learning. The work you put in at the beginning will make a huge difference as you grow and learn together. Most of the time that you spend with your puppy will become a learning experience, even if you are not doing structured training. When you call your puppy and they come running to you, reinforce that like crazy. They will

| 74 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 learn that coming to you means good treats and lots of fun and that will set them up for good recall habits for the rest of their lives. Requiring good behaviour in a pen or a crate will translate to pleasant car rides and tolerable dog show set ups. We’ve all rolled our eyes at the people with incessantly barking dogs at dog shows – a little bit of preventative work at home can make it so that you aren’t the person having eyes rolled at them. I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into the beginning of my training journey with my puppy Harlow. Hopefully by the next issue I’ll have more to share with you about our ongoing journey. Take care and keep training! Kelly and the KLAD Kids Kelly Ladouceur has been breeding and competing under the KLAD prefix for almost 20 years. She is involved in conformation, obedience, rally obedience, scent hurdle, nosework, and therapy work. > TRAINING Regina Beinhauer [email protected] 548 Justabout Rd. The cockers ranged from a one year old to a 10 year old with too many titles to list between Agility and Fast Cat. All the cockers held up to the 7 hours of being held, kissed, petted and having cameras in their faces. Thank you, Marlene Ness, Kim Vavolo, Deb Gunkle, Jim Moritz, and Bonnie Buell for giving up part or all of your weekend to show off our breed!

| 76 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 ASC FOUNDATION UPDATES ASC FOUNDATION SEMINAR AVAILABLE The ASC Foundation is excited to announce the first of a series of Zoom presentations that address the health of our breed. This seminar is presented by Dr. Tracy Stokol, Professor of Clinical Pathology at the Cornell Veterinary School, NY on “BLOOD PRODUCTION AND CLOTTING: WHEN IT GOES WRONG.” Dr. Stokol presents with a Q&A session an update of her research on Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia in Cocker Spaniels as well as other blood diseases of concern. Last year her grant titled: Plasminogen-activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and Impaired Fibrinolysis in Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia was funded by the AKC-CHF along with a significant contribution from the American Spaniel Club Foundation. You can find the link to the YouTube recording on the Foundation webpage here: https://asc-f.org/seminars/ ASC FOUNDATION LAUNCHES A HEALTH SURVEY In January of 2023 the American Spaniel Club Foundation launched an online Health Survey on Cocker Spaniels to breeders and members of the American Spaniel Club. As well, the AKC is assisting the Foundation by distributing the survey to people that have registered a cocker spaniel with the American Kennel Club. The intent of the survey is to identify issues that may be experienced by our Cocker companions over the past 20 years. A general list of Canine health issues was used to construct this survey, not necessarily those unique to Cockers. Understanding Cocker health issues will allow the Foundation to focus research and other efforts to improve the health of our Cockers as well as work with the foundations of other Spaniel breeds to jointly pursue common research interests. If you are a breeder or an owner of Cockers, please take a few minutes to participate in the survey. Your participation will aid in understanding Cocker Spaniel health and help us find research and science that will improve the quality of our canine companions in the future. If you have already participated, thank you. And if you have not yet participated, thank you for the consideration. Upon conclusion of the survey, results will be shared on this page on the ASC Foundation website: https://asc-f.org/disease-research/ If you have any questions or would like to participate in the survey, please contact the ASCF Health Survey at [email protected]. | 78 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 Blair, Beechstone’s Queen Bee, continues her journey to pet therapy certification. In the last article, we met a beautiful, brown Cocker Spaniel - Blair - that loves her new family, Jeff and Lory Griffen and their two Cocker Spaniels, Sawyer and Morgan. Blair enjoyed camping and hiking with her family and becoming familiar with her new environment. Blair became comfortable and excited with her new family and environment very quickly. She traveled to meet other family members and their canines. Plans were put into place that she would begin formal obedience training as well as preparation for the CGC program and therapy dog testing. Her journey continues as we learn more about Blair’s training, her activities, her field trips associated with her training, and therapy dog testing to become a certified therapy dog. Lory Griffen shares with us the details of Blair’s training and the activities she has experienced and continues to experience as a “Therapy Dog in Training.” We will learn about her training, and the goals Lory has in place to make her journey to pet therapy a success. LORY, TELL US ABOUT BLAIR’S EXPERIENCES IN TRAINING TO BECOME A CERTIFIED THERAPY DOG, AS WELL AS HER FORMAL TRAINING WITH HER OBEDIENCE AND THERAPY DOG TRAINING INSTRUCTORS: Blair has finished the basic training for becoming a therapy dog and is now in Canine Good Citizen classes. She is excelling in her classes according to her trainers. She loves to learn and actually learns very quickly. Because of her previous lifestyle, constant socialization and great breeding, she sees something new once and nothing bothers her. I feel she is probably ready for anything that comes along in life. Blair has experienced noises, people, surfaces, different types of lights, unstable objects, medical equipment, and nothing seems to bother her. We visit at least three new places each week for extended experiences. I discovered Blair loves to go shopping; she definitely has the shopping gene! She loves to shop in pet stores or any store that has something that may have people or especially children who may want to pet her or give her some love. She loves to see people happy and bring joy. She is definitely the Queen. WHAT ARE YOUR PRESENT AND FUTURE GOALS FOR BLAIR CONCERNING HER JOURNEY TO PET THERAPY? I plan for Blair to obtain the Canine Good Citizenship title, Canine Good Citizen Advance title, and Canine Good Citizen Urban title. In time we will train for Trick Dog titles; however, these will not all be earned before we are certified. Training and earning the different titles will enhance her solid confidence and our team bonding. She is eager to work during training and is a very intelligent girl. Blair actually loves to work, and it makes her PET THERAPY CONTINUES J J J J JYY By JOYCE MCINTYRE, ASC THERAPY DOG COMMITTEE CHAIR, and LORY GRIFFEN, GUEST CONTRIBUTOR BLAIR’S JOURNEY TO Owners: Jeff and Lory Griffen; Breeder: Karen Osper

AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 | 79 | happy. The titles are not required to be a therapy dog, but they help with our bonding and keep her happy and connected with people. Blair adores children! I plan to take her to libraries and schools for children to read to her. I’m sure she will excel in that area. When colleges and universities have their semester testing, we will visit to offer stress relief. We also have two senior retirement facilities waiting for her to come visit them. At times she will visit with her brothers, Sawyer or Morgan, and at other times she will visit alone. Most of the time, she will be visiting alone. WHEN DO YOU EXPECT BLAIR TO BE TESTED FOR CERTIFICATION FOR “THERAPY DOG” AND BEGIN VISITING THOSE THAT NEED HER SWEET TEMPERAMENT? Blair will be tested for the Canine Good Citizenship title first, and we will be tested for her certification for pet therapy as soon as a test is available in our area. She will be in special classes throughout this time because I believe the classes are beneficial for her Canine Good Citizen through Canine Good Citizen Urban titles. She is actually ready to be tested; however, there are no available tests in our area for the next couple months. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHERS THAT WOULD LIKE TO CERTIFY A THERAPY DOG? My advice to those who would like to be involved in pet therapy is to be sure you have a dog with a great temperament. Therapy dogs are born; they are not made. You cannot train temperament! Then socialize constantly! Take your puppy or dog to at least three new places weekly and be sure to go to obedience classes. You can home school your dog; however, obedience classes also give your dog the opportunity to be with other dogs and be under control with distractions you can’t provide. Most trainers know the best way to train therapy dogs in a specialized therapy dog class and situation. A good trainer may know situations a dog owner will not know or be aware of. New surfaces and sounds are very important to socialize with a prospective therapy dog. I found that hardware stores are great for different floor surfaces, sounds, people, children and many different sights. The organization we are certifying with allows costumes and dress-ups; therefore, the dogs dress for holidays and special occasions. My dogs are accustomed to wearing hats and costumes plus now Blair enjoys wearing dresses. She prances around wearing pretty dresses and hats like the Queen she is. People squeal with joy when they see the dogs walk into the rooms in costume. Some of them clap and giggle with joy as the dogs come into their rooms. I love to see the big smiles on their faces as they see the dogs in costume and Sawyer in his many different hats. I have had families and staff ask for special visits from the boys, Sawyer and Morgan, when they see them in the halls wearing their hats and beautiful embellished collars. Sawyer and Morgan also have their Trick > TRAINING continued > > PET THERAPY

| 80 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2023 Dog titles; therefore, I will be continuing with classes for Blair to learn tricks and obtain Trick Dog titles. People love to watch our dogs do tricks even if they are simple tricks like jumping through a hoop, finding a treat, doing a sit, lying down, spinning in a circle and reverse spins, bowing or pulling a Kleenex out of a box. They love for our dogs to entertain them in the short time they get to spend with them. My dogs and I love smiles and laughter! When I take my dogs into facilities, I hear the excitement and joy in their voices when they see them because maybe they had Cocker Spaniels in their past or they have a Cocker at home waiting “just like your beautiful Sawyer or Morgan.” I have heard so many requests for my dogs as I go through the halls by residents and their families just because “they are the beautiful Cocker Spaniels” or they have always wanted a Cocker like on TV. People love to see our dogs, and they have such joy and happiness in their voices and on their faces when they see them. It brings such joy to me also to share them with people who not only love dogs, but also love our amazing breed. A new puppy with a great temperament properly trained and socialized as well as an active show or performance temperament solid dog can be trained to certify as a therapy dog. A loving retired show dog can have a second career as a therapy dog to bring joy and memories to those that need them. It’s a team effort and such an honor to team with your sweet Cocker Spaniel to bring joy and smiles to others. In closing, we will continue to follow Blair to her therapy dog certification and some of her beginning therapy dog visits. As an evaluator of a therapy dog registry, I have no doubt that she will become a great therapy dog. Her breeder, owners, and instructors are doing and have done a great job preparing her for the honored title of THERAPY DOG. Lory Griffen is a seasoned trainer and handler of therapy dogs and her experience will be an asset for Blair. Blair is a wonderful ambassador of our beloved breed—The American Cocker Spaniel!
