PURINA PARENT CLUB PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM AND NEXT STEPS OF ELECTRONIC VOTING IN 2026With the 107th Flushing Spaniel Show only a month away, I tried to imagine what the first Flushing Spaniel Show was like and how, for over 106 years, dedicated ASC members have worked to ensure that this show continues. I am truly amazed that this historic show is about to be held for the 107th time. The sustainability of ASC, the National Specialty, and the iconic Flushing Show is solely due to the continuing hard work of ASC’s members. LONG-TIME PARTNER PURINAWhile ASC exists only because of its devoted members, a long-standing and particularly important partner for ASC has been and continues to be Purina. With all the ebbs and flows that have occurred over the years in dog shows and purebred dogs, Purina has been a constant and consistent corporate supporter of the American Spaniel Club. Purina had the foresight and vision to build a facility that provides parent-breed clubs a beautiful and incredibly affordable site for holding all events for their national specialties and other related activities. But Purina has provided ASC and ASCF much more than that. I suspect that people do not know or have forgotten that each year Purina gives ASC $6,000 for hospitality, which is split evenly between the Flushing Spaniel Show and the National Specialty. On top of that, since 2002, ASC has earned important funding through Purina’s Parent Club Partnership (PPCP) Program. This funding has not only included direct payments to ASC based on members’ purchases of Pro Plan food and probiotics but also the establishment and funding of a donor-advised fund for the American Spaniel Club Foundation to make donations to the AKC Canine Health Foundation for research studies important to cocker spaniels and the other flushing spaniels. These Purina payments to ASC and ASCF have totaled thousands and thousands of dollars.Purina, however, has recently announced that “[a]fter a successful run that lasted over two decades and raised over $9 million toward canine health research, breed rescue and education efforts, the Purina Parent Club Partnership (PPCP) Program will be discontinued as of December 31, 2025.” Nevertheless, Purina Pro Plan will continue supporting canine health through a new Pro Plan Grant Program and other ongoing initiatives. With this new opportunity from Purina, ASCF will continue to have the opportunity to receive important funds for canine health research, breed rescue, and education efforts no longer tied to purchases by ASC members. Purina has been and continues to be an important ASC/ASCF partner.REMINDER ASC WILL IMPLEMENT ELECTRONIC VOTING FOR JUDGES IN 2026Beginning in 2026, ASC will implement electronic voting for nominating and voting for judges, which will make it easier for members to engage in the process, simplify the ballot reconciliation, and increase the integrity of the process. Currently, ASC offers three (3) ways for members to submit their nomination form and/or ballot:1. In-person at the Flushing Spaniel Show or National Specialty2. By mailing a paper form/ballot to the Teller via USPS, postmarked by the published deadline3. By faxing/emailing a PDF form/ballot to a Yahoo mailboxTo be able to vote electronically, ALL ASC MEMBERS must re-confirm his or her (or the member club’s) email addresses and mobile phone numbers so ballots can reach you. In addition, we are requesting your consent to receive online/mobile ballots from ASC. TO DO THIS, PLEASE GO TO THE ASC WEBSITE AND COMPLETE THE ONLINE FORM.In closing, I want to wish all ASC members and their families Happy Holidays! I hope you have a joyous holiday season and that you will attend the 107th Flushing Spaniel Show in Knoxville, January 9-11, 2026. BULLETIN | MARCH 2025Molly Bee was four, I thought she needed a friend, and I was trusted with Ladybug, Tailormade Pretty LadyBug. She was very intelligent and loved obedience. LadyBug earned many obedience titles and loved dog shows. She was my Novice A dog, which meant my first dog to show. You only get one Novice A dog, and she never NQ’d in any of her trials while earning titles. I was so blessed with my first Tailormade Girl.Next came Suzie Q and MiMi Doll, and they took to the obedience training as well. Both were Tailormade Girls, and both added many titles to their names as well as both became therapy dogs. I received a call from Jan one day, and she called to tell me she had a dog that had my name written all over it. My grandchildren and I made a drive to Jan’s home to meet this Cocker with my name written on her. Sure enough she came home with me, and I named her DeeDee. She became my fourth therapy dog and fit right in with her sweet temperament and love of people as well as love for her housemates.Time passed and LadyBug, MiMi, and Suzie went to the Rainbow Bridge leaving DeeDee as a very lonely, only dog. DeeDee was very active with earning titles and doing therapy visits. It was almost three years before I was able to find just the right friend for her. By this time Jan wasn’t breeding Cockers so it took a while to find DeeDee’s friend. Her new friend is a buff girl named Sassy. She is not a Tailormade Girl, but I’ll never forget what Jan told me to do so she would fit in my heart with my Tailormade Girls. She told me to love her like I have all my McCocker Girls. DeeDee and our family have done just that!I want to thank Jan Taylor from the bottom of my heart for trusting me with four of her precious Tailormade Girls. They brought my family and many people so many smiles, joy, and blessings.Joyce McIntyreAKC Therapy Dog ChairAKC, memberCocker Spaniel Club of Central Oklahoma, PresidentOklahoma City Obedience Training Club, MemberHandler of Therapy Dog, DeeDeeTrainer of Future Therapy Dog, Sassy> PET THERAPYBoard Meeting MinutesRegina Beinhauer [email protected] Justabout Rd. BULLETIN | MARCH 2025 | 31 |JEAN DELISLE & PIERRE TALBOTSERVICE TO THE BREEDRemember back in the dark ages of the 20th century how difficult it was to research pedigrees? You could order one from a professional pedigree researcher; you could purchase one from AKC; you could rely on a handwritten pedigree by a breeder-owner. But those pedigrees provided limited information about the dogs beyond their names and AKC registration numbers.the first six months of 2024, there were approximately 350,000 visits to the site. When it comes to researching pedigrees for (American) Cocker Spaniels, cockers-worldwide is a preferred resource. It has gained a worldwide reputation for providing accurate and high-quality information for breeders and fanciers alike. Even ASCF cataract researchers have extensively used the pedigree database. In addition to the normal pedigree everyone is used to seeing, under breeding information the site lists half-siblings on both the sire’s and dam’s side of the pedigree as well as breedings and the offspring resulting from each breeding. It also provides a coefficient of inbreeding as well as reverse pedigrees to identify producers of producers. For their dedication and service to the breed as exemplified by their thousands of hours of work maintaining the site that enables (American) Cocker Spaniel breeders to make intelligent breeding decisions, Jean and Pierre are being honored by induction into the Hall of Fame for Service to the Breed.riannonSAM & WILMA PARKER8173 Red Mill Dr.West Chester, OH 45069-1718Phone 513-759-0329 Elena Sicurello [email protected] www.Tsunamicockers.com

Their son, Brody, represents the fourth generation of Cavanaughs in the sport.SUZANNE DILLINNo biography submitted.KEVIN FLINNThank you to the ASC members for this nomination to judge the 2027 National Specialty. I got my first cocker back in 2004, a R/W male. I finished that dog owner-handled at a specialty, and I have been in love with this sport ever since. I bred a few very nice litters that did some nice winning, but for me, showing for others is what I enjoyed. Taking that young prospect and working with them to bring the best out of them for their owners. I can relate itnow to having the grandkids, have fun and spoil them before you send them back home. Currently I am licensed to judge the Cocker Spaniel, but once I am done with my “day” job I hope to pursue additional breeds and groups. I never thought about judging, but with the convincing of Elaine and LaMar Mathis also Dick and Betty Duding, Iapplied. I’m so happy I listened to them. As a breeder judge I love to evaluate the future of our breeding stock and finding a well balanced Cocker that could work in the field all day long.
For me, there is nothing more pleasing to the eye then the silhouette of a cocker on the move.Again, thank you for this nomination.KERRY LEONARDI grew up in a family that valued canine companionship and excellence. My father was an avid hunter, and we spent many hours working with the dogs in the bird fields where I witnessed how form follows function. While raising my family and building a career, I watched my parents show their cocker spaniels, and when my kids were grown, it was my turn. In the past 20 years I have finished countless Champions that I have bred and owned, including BISS BIF GCH Keto Gallant Rodeo Romeo and his mother BIF CH Gallant Oh Lydia of the Circus. Tom and I handle most of our own dogs but call on the professionals when necessary. I have a deep respect and appreciation for the handlers and other breeders in our sport and their dedication to the breed. I am committed to promoting responsible breeding practices and the welfare of all dogs. I regularly participate in breed education, seminars and workshops, staying up to date on the latest development in the breed and judging standards. It is an honor to be nominated to judge the July 2027 Cocker Spaniel National Specialty and celebrate the beauty and versatility of our beloved breed.SANDRA LEXI would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who nominated me to judge at the July 2027 ASC National Specialty. For that I am very grateful. My involvement in the dog world has been one of a lifelong passion, starting with my mother who bred cockers for 40 years and taught me a lot over the years. I have bred Cockers and Affenpinschers over the past 35 years and cannot imagine not being involved in this world of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and of course our desire toproduce the best dogs. Being a breeder can be one of great heartache but its the high moments that keep us going and involved. Once in, hardly do we leave. My high moments have been winning at National Specialties for both cockers and Affens and of course along with judging Parti-Colors atthe ASC Flushing Show and the Black Variety at the National Specialty in Oklahoma City. I feel very fortunate to have had that opportunity. My judging career started 17 years ago with my now being an All-Breed Judge here in Canada and holding my AKC license for all of Sporting and the Toy Group. I have gone full circle in breeding to judging and now back to breeding along with judging and trying to balance the two. At times itis a conflict. It makes one’s life full, no doubt about that. Again, my sincerest thanks for nominating me to judge in 2027.Futurity ClassesJOE SERRANOI bred cockers under the Derano’s kennel name. I was very lucky to breed some very nice dogs that contributed to the breed. I have judged numerous specialties, several times at ASC as well as internationally. It is an honor to be considered to judge the American Spaniel Club show; it isthe pinnacle show for our breed. Thank you for your consideration.Editor’s Note:There is only one Futurity judge nominee. The other Futurity judge nominee declined the invitation to judge. There were no other eligible nominees.> who is on the ballot? | 24 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | DECEMBER 2025

By JOYCE MCINTYRE, ASC THERAPY DOG COMMITTEE CHAIRI have had several Therapy Dogs over the years, and the memories of them are strong, comforting and close to my heart. I love having my own Therapy Dogs. My current Therapy Dog and I participate in the Kids Reading to Dogs Program at a Library close to our hometown, and I have one Therapy Dog in training.I didn’t have a dog growing up but always loved them. My grandparents had working dogs they used for herding, but they lived outside. When I was a High School teacher, one of my students had a dog with a litter of puppies. She asked if I wanted one. I told her I would love to see the pups. The next night, at play practice, she brought in a little girl pup, who became a member of my home, I named her Dixie. My husband and I didn’t yet have children, and Dixie grew to be very special to us. When our daughter joined the family a few years later, Dixie was excited for the addition. Dixie became seriously ill not long after that and we couldn’t save her. During those years my husband and I were taking night classes to further our careers. We also had lots of school activities and weekends filled with visits to parents and grandparents. Our busy schedules meant time passed quickly and our daughter grew up without a family dog. When she was in college, she entered a talent competition and won! She took the prize money and bought a Cocker Spaniel she named Muffin. Our whole family loved Muffin. When our daughter got married, Muffin stayed with us and I loved having her as a companion. We were sad when the time came to give Muffin to the Rainbow Bridge. When we took Muffin to our Vet, he told us it was ‘Cocker Spaniel Day’, because another Cocker was at his clinic giving birth to a litter of pups. Months passed after we let Muffin go, and we were ready to find another Cocker Spaniel. The hunt for our new Cocker was harder than we thought it would be, and we called our Vet to ask if he knew of any good Cocker Spaniel breeders. He gave us the name of owner of the Cocker that was delivering her puppies the day we took Muffin in. When I called her, she said she had one puppy left from that very litter. I told her right then I would take that puppy, sight unseen. I named her Molly Bee. This beautiful, sweet, silver Cocker became my first Therapy Dog, and she brought therapy articleMY THERAPY DOG MEMORIES AND CURRENT THERAPY DOGmany wonderful people into my life, including two dear people who are my cherished friends all these years later. Molly Bee also led me to my next Therapy Dogs. When I wanted to get a companion for Molly Bee, her Groomer sent me to Jan Taylor, Tailormade Cockers. I loved their solid temperaments and beauty. My first Tailormade Cocker was a Black Cocker I named Ladybug. She became my Novice Obedience dog, and she was perfect in every trial, she never had an NQ! Ladybug was followed by three more Tailormade Cockers, Suzie Q, Mimi Doll and DeeDee. All three became Therapy Dogs and have spread much love to children and adults alike. Of the four, only DeeDee is still with me and active in Therapy work. Molly Bee, Suzie Q and Mimi Doll are waiting for me at the Bridge. I treasure the friendship I developed with Jan Taylor and I’m grateful for four smart, beautiful Therapy Dogs I’ve been blessed with starting with Molly Bee. In this article, I’ll highlight each one with a short summary. I’ll also introduce my new Therapy Dog in training. My Therapy Dog story starts with Molly Bee.MOLLY BEEMolly Bee started her Therapy Dog training with Beginners Obedience through the Training Club I’d joined. The Therapy Dog classes weren’t continuous, so we had time to take more Obedience classes at higher levels. She learned many Obedience commands that were crucial to her therapy work. She was sociable and fearless; noises and quick movements didn’t scare her. She loved all the training exercises and field trips. Molly Bee loved people, but she was very attached to me. When it was time for her to take the Therapy Certification Test, I worried about the part where I was to leave her with a Kind Stranger. When we arrived for the test, Molly Bee went right to the first person she saw, the father of one of the testers, for pets. To my surprise, he was the Kind Stranger. He held her for three minutes while I went out of sight. She passed the Certification Test with flying colors.Molly Bee loved being a Therapy Dog. She visited the Children’s Hospital frequently, as well as Rehab Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Memory Care Centers. She was loved by many, but most of all me. She taught me so much and sent her confidence up the lead to me. | 26 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | DECEMBER 2025
AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | DECEMBER 2025 | 27 |Board Meeting Minutes> therapySUZIE QThe first time I saw Suzie Q, she was competing in Puppy Sweeps at OKC’s five-day show. Suzie was the cutest red Cocker, and I fell in love with her. She and Jan won “Best in Sweeps” that day. When Jan returned from the ring, she sat down beside me, and I got to hold Suzie. I asked if she was available and said I’d love to have her. Jan said. “No, not unless one of her legs fall off.” I took that to mean absolutely not! I saw Suzie from time to time after that and loved her even more. One day, out of the blue, Jan called me to say she had a three-legged dog I could have if I still wanted her. I couldn’t get there fast enough. Suzie still had four good legs, and became my Suzie Q.Suzie also went to Obedience class and entered Obedience trials. She earned many Obedience titles. She loved all performance sports we trained for, but she really loved Barn Hunt the best. She once found her rat in 22 seconds. She began her Therapy Dog career at age two and continued until she was just a few months shy of fourteen. Suzie loved her therapy dog visits. She went to many facilities including Hospice, Nursing Homes, Community Villages, Children’s Hospitals, Rehab Facilities, and Libraries. She loved children and her last two years were spent at Libraries with children reading to her. Everyone that met her loved her, but I loved her more. Suzie Q left so many memories in my heart, but she also left such a lonely place in it also. She was the sweetest Cocker.MIMI DOLLWhen Jan Taylor had a litter, I made a point to see those puppies. In one litter, sired by her elegant male Cocker, Handsome, there was a little black Cocker girl I fell in love with. Jan had not made any decisions about their future, so I knew better than to even ask about her, but Jan noticed how much I loved her. She and Suzie Q were half-sisters, sharing the same mom. I thought about this beautiful little black Cocker a lot. One day after Molly Bee went to Rainbow Bridge, Jan called to tell me that Molly Bee had left me a gift . . . the little black Cocker I so loved. Jan had named her Pinkie, but with Jan’s blessing, I changed her name to Mimi Doll. Mimi Doll became a Tailormade McCocker Girl with Ladybug and Suzie Q. She trained in Obedience and Barn Hunt. She had such a sweet, reliable temperament, she also became a Therapy Dog and visited many facilities that Molly Bee and Suzie Q visited. I never tested with two dogs because I wanted to visit with them one at a time. The years passed and Lady Bug, Suzie Q, and Mimi Doll continued to add titles to their names as well as the Therapy Dog awards and letters after their names. DEEDEEMy three Tailormade McCocker Girls, Ladybug, Suzie Q, and Mimi Doll were a living trio. Ladybug retired from obedience trials but Suzie Q and Mimi Doll were involved in performance and pet therapy. One day I received a phone call from Jan saying she had a black Cocker with my name written all over it. I told my grandchildren, Parker and Sydnee, we need to visit this dog with my name on her. We visited Jan and met her. Both grandchildren were begging to bring this sweet, beautiful girl home. I told Jan that she would be my fourth dog, but things that should happen do. That sweet, beautiful year-old Cocker came home with us.We introduced the new girl to my three girls one at a time. They came outside on leash to meet her, and they acted like they’d known her forever. When it was time to go inside, I showed her crate I’d fixed for her, and she knew it was hers. She instantly loved her new family. I know having Parker and Sydnee with me helped. I named the new kid on the block DeeDee! She loved the other dogs, and they loved her. Ladybug was alpha, and she accepted DeeDee immediately. Suzie Q and DeeDee became the best of friends. Time passed and Ladybug and Mimi Doll joined Molly Bee at Rainbow Bridge. That left Suzie Q and DeeDee. They were such great friends. DeeDee went to Obedience classes and earned titles She is such a sweet girl and loves everyone, she trained for Therapy and passed her evaluation with flying colors. She and Suzie Q took turns visiting all the places I had always taken the Therapy Dogs. Suzie Q and DeeDee were very easy to live with.
> therapyWhen Suzie Q was almost 14 years old, she became sick and went to the Bridge. DeeDee searched for her for months. It was such a sad time losing Suzie Q. I felt for DeeDee, she didn’t understand why Suzie wasn’t here. SASSYROSEBefore long, I wanted to get DeeDee another Cocker friend. It was at the height of Covid, and at first I had no leads for Cockers then several fell through. I looked for two years while DeeDee continued to go on therapy visits. After almost three years our sweet Sassy Baby came to live with us. She was taken by her owner to a dog show in Oklahoma, and Lorrie and Sydnee picked her up from a Dog Show and brought her home to us. When DeeDee met her they were both so happy. I’d never had two dogs take to each other like Sassy and DeeDee did. It was good to have this sweet buff girl in our family. Sassy is a breed champion and her owner was looking for her forever home. I knew her owner from our shows in Oklahoma City. We waited until her last litter was weaned and then she came home. From that first day, DeeDee and Sassy have been the best of friends. Sassy fits right in, she is easy to live with and so sweet. She’s had Obedience training and is training to be around medical. She enjoys wearing costumes and stands still for grooming. She is exactly what our family needed, especially DeeDee. This week I read, “The dog you have now was sent to you by the dog you used to have.” It made me think of how much she reminds me of Suzie Q. We all love our Sassy Baby. She will be eight years old in December. Her therapy training continues, and if she wants to be a Therapy Dog, I’ll train her to evaluation. I think she will be a great Therapy Dog. She loves people and people love her, we are very thankful for her.I feel blessed for the Cocker Spaniels that have become part of our family. DeeDee and Sassy make life better for my husband and me. Sassy loves my husband and prefers his lap to mine, but I’m fine with it because she is the first Cocker to do so and I’m glad she does. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Jan Taylor for the four Cockers from her breeding. I also thank Sassy’s owner for allowing her to be part of our family. DeeDee will continue being a Library dog, and Sassy will become a therapy dog if she wants to.Joyce McIntyreASC Therapy Dog Chair | ASC Member | President of Cocker Spaniel Club of Central Oklahoma | Oklahoma City Obedience Training Club Member | Handler of Therapy Dog - DeeDee | Handler of Sassy, Therapy Dog in Training | Content Contributor for The Bulletin for the last 10+ Yrs| 84 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. PUPPY FUNBy KELLY LADOUCEUR, KLAD Cockers » [email protected] I sit here planning my next couple of litters, I started to think about the kinds of things I work on with puppies before they go to their new homes. I don’t do anything particularly in depth, but I do like to teach puppies to enjoy learning new things before they meet their new families. I feel that this sets them up for success as they grow up. While I don’t follow any particular puppy rearing program, I have studied the main ones in order to understand the why and when with regards to their introduction of various stimuli.I start before the puppies’ eyes are open by exposing them to odor – specifically, the odors that are used in scent detection competitions here in Canada. I rotate through the odors, attaching them to the side of the whelping box. This isn’t really training, more of a passive introduction. Because of my love of scent work, I feel like this just stacks the deck in my favor in case there is a puppy I want to keep from the litter.Once the puppies are up on their feet, they start getting introduced to a variety of surfaces, both indoors and outdoors. Carpet, tile, hardwood, whatever is on the ground outside, plus dog beds, blankets, tarps, exercise pens and more. Once they’re more steady on their feet, I add in wobble boards and fitness items like the FitBone. I also like to use my Cato Plank board, which can act as a very low teeter-totter. I like to help the puppies learn that no matter what is under their feet, they can be sure that I will keep them safe. I want the puppies to learn to trust their humans to keep them safe.Once the puppies are on solid food (at least partially), I start teaching them about treats. Typically for this I use string cheese, as I can get the pieces really small and the puppies don’t have to spend ages chewing them. This is when I start teaching them a hand touch, which is where they touch their nose to my palm. A hand touch can have so many applications down the road that it is consistently the first thing I teach puppies. I put a lot of work into the hand touch when they’re young, so that it almost becomes a reflexive response in my dogs. This can help with a dog that is concerned about something – because the hand touch is a reflex, they can do it even when their attention is elsewhere. And when they switch their attention to my hand, I can help them to refocus on something other than what is concerning them. I have also used it to teach a variety of fun tricks as well as teaching heeling. This is also the time that I like to start teaching puppies to follow food. I do this by teaching them to spin, sit and lie down. These are all fun little tricks that most new owners will enjoy. The other thing I teach puppies is to come when I call them. I think every single breeder I know does something similar. In a very highpitched voice, I say “Pup! Pup! Pup! Pup!” and they tend to all come running at once. I’ve never really thought about it much, but a coworker has a puppy bred by my good friend, and she was having trouble getting his attention. I had seen the puppies regularly since they were tiny, so I did my usual puppy call, and he came running.I also like introducing scent work to the puppies once they understand treats. I started my last puppy, Marge, at about 5 or 6 weeks old, since I knew that I wanted to do scent work with her as she got older. I start very simply, using a pairing bowl that has scent in a compartment under a bowl (with air holes) that I can throw food into when the puppy sticks their head into to check it out. If you prefer to start dogs using the NACSW way, this is a great time to introduce the puppies to searching for food and/or toys.I start introducing the puppies to the great outdoors as a place to potty around 6 weeks old, depending on the weather. Obviously, their little bodies can’t hold it for very long, but I don’t think it ever hurts to praise them to the moon and back when they happen to potty outside. It sets them up for success when they go to their new homes. When I write it out, it sounds like I do a ton of training with my babies before I send them home, but I really don’t. A lot of it happens during meal times or play time, so the puppies don’t ever feel like they’re under pressure to learn new things.SET YOUR PUPPIES UP FOR SUCCESS WITH THESE SIMPLE, DAILY ACTIVITIESAMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | MARCH 2025 | 69 |to be filled with kibble or small treats that get dispensed at a variable rate based on the dog’s interaction with the toy. The most recognizable food dispensing toy is the Kong, which has been around for many years. Kongs and other food dispensers like them are meant to be stuffed with anything you like that is dog-friendly. I’ve used everything from kibble to peanut butter to yogurt and many other things. Once they’re stuffed you can pop them in the freezer for a few hours, so that it takes the dogs longer to get everything out of them. Kongs and other stuffable toys are fantastic for when you have to leave your dog in a crate for an extended period of time. A tightly stuffed and well frozen Kong can take over an hour for dogs to clean out and once they’re done they should be ready for a nap. The other kind of food dispensing toy is designed for you to put kibble or small treats in, which come out as the dog interacts with the toy. There are Snoops, Tricky Treat Balls and other items in a wide variety of shapes. These kinds of toys do require a bit of space, as the dog pushes them around to get the food out. I find that my guys enjoy interacting with these, and it usually takes them around half an hour or longer to get all of the food out.As you can see, canine enrichment can be as complex or as simple as you choose it to be. It doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming for you as the owner. These are just a small selection of simple things that you can do to make your dog’s life more enjoyable. If you’re interested in learning more about canine enrichment, thousands of pages will come up. There are so many websites, blogs and books that you can reference, or you can try your own thing.Enjoy the spring and have fun with your dogs. At the end of the day that's what really matters.best days of her life was when I helped a friend build some Ikea shelves, and they said it was fine for Char to shred every single box. I can’t imagine how long it took my friend to clean up the mess, but Charlotte was so very happy. This is one of the easiest ways to give your dogs something to do. Order something online, wait for it to arrive, unpack your goodies and then give your dogs the box. Some of you that do nosework may be concerned that this could lead to destruction of the boxes used for container searches, but I have never had that happen. Dogs are very capable of learning contextual cues for the various activities we do, so they understand that shredding a cardboard box in the yard or house isn’t the same as being in a new area, with their scent work gear on, ready to search. There is a clean-up aspect to this activity, so it’s better done when you have the time to tidy up afterwards. One of the most obvious choices for enrichment is the large selection of puzzle toys that are now on the market. Originally marketed by Nina Ottosson of Sweden, dog puzzle toys can be found at the majority of dog supply retailers. Some of them are relatively simple, geared towards dogs that have not played such games before, and some are more complicated. There are some I’ve seen that I’m not sure I would be able to solve them. Since I don’t want to have it confirmed that my dogs are smarter than me, I avoid buying those puzzle toys. These kinds of toys are meant to be done by your dog while you’re supervising them. Often the toys come with instructions on how to introduce them to your dogs, including how to make the puzzles more challenging as your dog learns how to operate it.Along the lines of puzzle toys are food dispensing toys. Again, these are widely available from pet supply retailers, in an array of shapes and sizes. Some of them are meant to be stuffed with things and served either as-is or after being frozen, and some of them are meant > ENRICHMENTKelly Ladouceur has been breeding and competing under the KLAD prefix for almost 20 years.
