Today the Thai film industry is one of the most significant sectors in the
engine that drives Thai economy, especially in the creative economy segment.
The growth of the Thai film industry contributes to the higher competitiveness
of the country in general. In 2016, the total value of the film industry and its
ancillary in Thailand was 23,347 million baht ($707 million), excluding the value
of internet consumption. This primary value further contributes to the economic
figures of related industries, such as tourism, manufacturing and services,
information technology, costume design and fashion, etc. Besides the economic
value, Thai cinema functions as a means to promote the country’s cultural
image, ways of life, social norm, and identity, through the art of moving image.
Last year, a number of Thai movies were warmly received by audiences from
different parts of the world, and many Thai films have recently won prizes at
various international film festivals.

The National Audio-Visual Committee works in cooperation with all
stakeholders to promote the Thai film industry to become the center of Southeast
Asian film production, as well as to be acknowledged by the global market.
Following the third phase (2017-2021) of the national strategy in promotion
of Thai movies and video, the Thai Film Directory 2017-2018 is intended to be
a record of the filmmaking activities that will facilitate Thai and international
buyers and researchers who’re interested in Thai films.

As chairman of The National Audio-Visual Committee, I hope that this Thai
Film Directory 2017-2018 will serve as a small cog in the ever-spinning wheel
of the film industry. The detail and information gathered in this book should be
able to facilitate film professionals’ attempts to improve the industry and bring
it toward our desired goal.

Foreword

The Ministry of Culture, as an agency tasked with the promotion of Thai
audio-visual creation, has integrated our functions and moved forward accord-
ing to the third phase (2017-2021) of the national strategy of Thai audio-visual
promotion under the brand “Content Thailand”. The goal is to support and develop
a proactive drive of Thai movies in domestic and international markets. This
book, Thai Film Directory 2017-2018, has compiled key information of Thai films
that have been released in 2017 and up to May 2018, including film title, genre,
cast and crew, contact point, as well as key statistic numbers of the industry.
With both Thai and English text, the book is aimed at reaching both Thai and
international film professionals.

The Ministry of Culture would like to express gratitude toward all public and
state partners that have supplied the information required to complete this
directory. We hope that Thai Film Directory 2017-2018 will provide benefits
to film professionals in Thai and abroad who can use the information here as
references in scholastic research, business transactions, as well as other
activities that promote the development of Thai audio-visual industry according
to the objective of each organization.

Fifty Thai films hit the cinemas in 2017, but one title dominated the headlines, the
box office, the award shows, and the consciousness of the audiences. Bad Genius was,
as wordplay has it, an ingenious exam-room thriller that was the top-grossing Thai film of
2017, hauling in 111 million baht ($3.3 million). It was also a critical favourite that swept
into the early-2018 award season with aplomb, winning almost every major category
in almost every award show. The director, Nattawut Poonpiriya (whose previous film
was Countdown) has emerged as a star filmmaker with a strong grip of Hollywood-style
suspense, reinforced by his charismatic young cast led by the stylishly nerdy Chutimon
Chuengcharoensukying, who plays a straight-A student and exam-cheating ringleader.

diverse gender identities. They have shared their experiences, personal life, and
attitude towards their social life in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, where they have
grown up in. The common theme of these stories are their coming of age, confusion
with dreams and love, while parenting is the major factor.

#BKKY is narrated through teenagers’ interview by creating a new character named
JoJo, a 17 year-old girl who represents all stories during the transitioning moment from
12th grade to university, the moment that they have many first experiences of life and
simultaneously try to discover their true identities.

to produce a perfect episode. They were assigned the case of a man, Chai, who is at
wit’s end with his wife, Aueng, who has been acting strange since the suicide of their
daughter. Itt and Por go to their village to meet them to gather more information. They
also conducted interviews in the village, and set up cameras in their house to detect
paranormal activity. But then, many bizarre and eerie events start happening, and a

Mali operates a one man food stand in a market in front of a college. He has a lot
of clients and some of them become his friends. While it is not normal for food stall
chef to become buddies with his clients, they become very close and hang out together
whenever they have time. They came from various paths of lives, a pilot, a college
lecture, a lawyer and the last member a famous plastic surgeon.

People always wonder how they became such a great friend. It’s because of Mali’s
honestly work ethic and his cooking skill. Mali is famous for his wide variety of omelet

Malisa, a housewife who also runs online cosmetics business, discovers that her
