My Nature in Nature

My project consists of self portraits after I moved to the
United States. I had this feeling of being on my own in
everything I do in a totally new and different place. I
had times when I had to do everything on my own as
a consequence of living in a different system. This was
sometimes hard and very tiring but there were times when
it was really fun as well. I portray these different sides of
myself and moods since I have been on my own. I shoot
my photos in nature as a location a lot because nature is
the place where I return to as a consequence of my feelings.
That’s where I go when I feel alone when I want to relax
and it’s always the place where I enjoy myself. I feel a strong
connection to it, both physically and spiritually. I use nature
in my photos also as a symbol of the environment where I
try to adapt myself. That is why with my body language in
my photos, I sometimes mimic it or try to become a part of
it while expressing my emotions.

Transcendence of Self:  Overcoming Melancholia

I used to suffer from melancholia, but have since recovered. The healing
process impacted me so deeply. I wanted to express the experience through

a series of self-portraits.
The project is divided into four parts to provide a narrative for the
melancholia experience; how melancholia starts, why it happens, how it
affects people, and how to avoid situations and feelings of depression. This
project has not only continued my personal growth, but also encourages

others to understand, help, and heal those in need.

TSU-HAN HWANG
Taipei, Taiwan

I was a runaway. But I find myself through photography.
During my career of photographer’s assistant in Taiwan, I realized that I preferred to create fine art rather than doing
commercial  shoots. I had to move on.  Thus, I begin my overseas study at School of Photography, Academy of Art
University in San Francisco. While I enjoy San Francisco, I want to explore conceptual work and give Taiwan a different
perspective of photography.
I am a photographic artist based in San Francisco. I enjoy experimenting with black and white darkroom, alternative
process, mixed media, and digital imaging; working with photography beyond photo paper.

Wait Until Dark/Chloé Meynier

Wait Until Dark

Wait until Dark  is a series of colored
images shot from unexpected angles,
resembling retro movie stills. The carefully
staged scenes explore women’s roles,
vulnerability, and question identity.
Each character is drawn from personal
interpretation of American mid-century
life and addresses the complexities of
the condition of women at that time
period. By placing figures in familiar,
yet unknown environments, the created
scenes are quiet but psychologically
compelling. The characters’ emotional
states vary between reverie, longing,
and self-confidence. The rare absence of
characters prompts viewers to slow down
to create their own personal narratives.
The dramatic lighting emphasizes the
emotional overtones of each character
while leaving room for interpretation. The
imaginary scenes involve characters and
décor that are rooted, by appearance, in
the mid-twentieth century.

Wait Until Dark/Chloé Meynier

The series subtly hints at looming darkness and
loneliness but mostly shows hope and self-confidence. The
images are charged with an ambiguous narrative yet, allow
viewers to stitch all the elements together to imagine what fate
awaits these imagined characters. Overall, the work expresses
a quiet melancholy and probes tensions between invisible
challenges, intimacy, identity, and life. The themes evoked are
timeless and universal and the work is an attempt to visually
weave together strands of both American cultural history and
personal interpretation of this history from a foreign point of
view.
