Rotaract Pack Initiation - 2023/07/01 Volunteer Hours - 1280 Hours Secondary Avenues - Membership Development and Retention Project Chairperson -Sachini Madushka, Gayathma Weerawanni, Thisal Walgampaya The Rotaract Club of Uva Wellassa University’s signature project, the "Rotaract Pack," is a comprehensive club service initiative aimed at fortifying the club from within. Inspired by the structured teamwork and leadership dynamics of a wolf pack, this project focuses on empowering the club’s core team, led by the president (the "alpha"), to function at its highest potential. The primary objective of the Rotaract Pack is to cultivate a deep sense of belonging and commitment among its members. This begins with a robust onboarding program named "Know Your Rotaract Journey with the Pack." This program goes beyond merely explaining club rules and expectations; it immerses new members in the rich history, mission, and core values of Rotaract. This approach ensures that new members understand the significance of their journey within the club, fostering a strong connection to the club’s mission and instilling a sense of belonging from the outset. Recognizing the importance of continuous learning and development, the club has implemented avenue-wise meetings. These dedicated sessions provide members with valuable knowledge specific to their areas of interest within Rotaract. Topics such as project management, fundraising strategies, and other essential skills are covered, not only enhancing members' abilities but also strengthening the bond between the Board of Directors (BOD) and the general membership. Regular interaction through these meetings facilitates personal connections and allows BOD members to serve as mentors and resources for the members. Knowledge sharing and mentorship are key pillars of the Rotaract Pack. The club values the wisdom and experience of past members and presidents, inviting them to participate in orientation sessions and knowledgesharing events. These sessions allow new members to learn from the experiences of those who have come before them, fostering a sense of legacy and reinforcing the idea that joining the Rotaract Pack is joining a lineage of impactful Rotarians. Informal conversations are encouraged, ensuring that a wealth of knowledge is always accessible, further strengthening the bonds within the Rotaract Pack. Membership retention is another critical focus of the club. Beyond onboarding and training, the club takes proactive steps to ensure that financial limitations or personal struggles do not become barriers to participation. The Rotaract Club embraces inclusivity when selecting members for committees, the BOD, and the executive committee (ExCo). Members who demonstrate leadership potential are given opportunities to contribute, regardless of their financial situation, ensuring a well-rounded and diverse pack. The ExCo proactively offers support when members face personal difficulties, providing financial assistance for membership dues or projectrelated expenses. Regular gatherings are a cornerstone of the Rotaract Pack’s strategy. Understanding that strong bonds are often forged during simple, informal meetings, the club organizes regular gatherings within the university canteen over a cup of tea. These sessions are crucial for building trust and understanding among members. Financial limitations do not hinder these bonding sessions, as the club operates in a spirit of camaraderie. Members share stories, offer support, and celebrate each other's successes, fostering open communication and a sense of belonging. This camaraderie extends beyond the canteen, with the pack gathering to celebrate every birthday, achievement, and personal milestone. The story of the Rotaract Pack is one of remarkable transformation. Initially formed by a small core group, the ExCo strategically expanded the pack, welcoming a full Board of Directors (BOD) of 30 members. Recognizing the importance of passion and focus, the club formed dedicated committees, each comprising members passionate about specific service areas. This deliberate effort fostered a sense of belonging and created a truly united front. 52

53 The Rotaract Pack’s transformation extended far beyond internal growth. Their dedication and the success of their service projects elevated the club to a position of prominence within the university. Despite challenges and initial negativity on social media, their commitment to service and community resonated with others. By fostering positive relationships with other clubs and the student union, they overcame initial negativity and built a network of support. By the year's end, the Rotaract Pack had earned recognition and respect, establishing themselves as role models for younger generations. Throughout the year, the Rotaract Pack operated with careful planning and unwavering dedication. From maintaining transparent financial records to purposeful meeting agendas, every aspect was considered. Their dedication culminated in the flawless execution of their installation ceremony, even under the added pressure of a District Rotaract Representative (DRR) visit and unexpected challenges. The club demonstrated remarkable adaptability, ensuring a smooth installation and a successful DRR visit. The club recognized that a thriving club relies on wellequipped leaders. They provided crucial training sessions on citations, public relations strategies, and Rotaract best practices, equipping members with the necessary skills to navigate the professional aspects of Rotaract. The ExCo implemented a dedicated year-long training program for incoming leaders, ensuring continuity and stability within the club administration. Financial and training support for participation in external programs further groomed potential leaders, nurturing a pool of qualified individuals ready to take on administrative roles. The club maintains a strong relationship with its sponsoring Rotary club, Rotary Club of Badulla. This collaboration yields tangible benefits, empowering the Rotaract Pack’s club administration. Mentorship on project proposals and fundraising strategies from Rotarians equips members with the tools to secure funding for initiatives. Weekly fellowship events between Rotarians and Rotaractors foster valuable connections, enriching the Rotaract experience and opening doors to collaboration. This relationship exemplifies the true spirit of the Rotary family, paving the way for a more impactful future for all involved. The club has set both short-term and long-term objectives to ensure its continuous growth and impact. These include implementing dedicated committees, empowering general members, distributing administrative workloads, fostering relationships with the university administration, and cultivating a strong and active membership base. By focusing on these goals, the Rotaract Pack aims to enhance its image within the university community, establish a well-rounded team of professional Rotaractors, and create a supportive environment where members feel valued and empowered. The success of the Rotaract Pack is a reflection of meticulous planning, unwavering dedication, and a commitment to making a difference. This comprehensive project harnesses the power of over 100 university students to address the devastating impact of rapid development and deforestation. Lush 6.0 takes a three-pronged approach to environmental protection. Firstly, the project ignites a passion for conservation through a species extinction awareness competition. Weekly quizzes focus on Sri Lankan species listed on the IUCN Red List, encouraging participants to research and understand the threats these creatures face. This educational component empowers participants to become advocates for reforestation efforts. Armed with knowledge, Lush 6.0 translates awareness into action. The project spearheaded a significant tree planting drive in Bambaragala Pathana, a locality in the Passara Divisional Secretariat in Uva. Over 70 volunteers, including university students and Rotaractors, joined forces with the Department of Export Agriculture to plant over 700 native Sri Lankan trees. The chosen species, like Mee (Azadirachta indica) and Kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna), are well-adapted to the local climate and promote biodiversity. This initiative not only increases green cover but also enhances water purification, soil conservation, and climate regulation. Lush 6.0's commitment goes beyond planting trees. Recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental issues, the project collaborates with Rotaract and Interact Clubs, as well as Nature Clubs across Sri Lanka, on the "Trash to Treasure" initiative. 60 Kunchanaada Initiation - 2023/08/17 Volunteer Hours – 320 Hours Secondary Avenues - Environmental Service Project Chairperson - Thisal Walgampaya, Kawmadi Jayasinghe Kunchanada is a signature initiative of the Rotaract Club of Uva Wellassa University-Badulla, designed to address the Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) in Sri Lanka. Over the years, the project has gained significant recognition for its sustainable and impactful approaches to overcoming the challenges posed by HEC. The project emerged from the need to address the severe socio-economic and environmental issues resulting from HEC in Sri Lanka. Rapid urbanization, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development have disrupted elephant migratory patterns, forcing them into human settlements. This has led to dangerous confrontations, with an alarming rise in both elephant and human fatalities. In 2022 and 2023 alone, 433 elephants died each year due to HEC, alongside significant human casualties. The project started with a comprehensive need assessment and research study, exploring ecofriendly and sustainable methods to mitigate HEC. One significant solution identified was the Palmyra fence, leveraging indigenous knowledge. Palmyra trees, planted in zigzag patterns, act as physical barriers with their sharp edges and saw-like fronds discouraging elephants from breaching the fence. This method is cost-effective, requires minimal maintenance, and has a lifespan of over 100 years. Kunchanada also included the "Hasthi" phase, aimed at fostering a deeper connection between volunteers and elephants. A volunteering day at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was organized, where participants engaged in activities like cleaning elephant sheds and bathing the elephants. This hands-on experience was crucial in raising empathy and respect for these majestic creatures, further supporting the project's mission. Additionally, the "Hasthi" phase involved creating comprehensive posts about elephant behavior, challenges they face, and the importance of conservation, which were shared with the community. This educational outreach aimed to inspire participants to become advocates for elephant conservation. The project plans to implement Palmyra fences across Sri Lanka, reducing HEC incidents and promoting the conservation of elephants. The Rotaract Club aims to secure funding for the widespread implementation of these fences and continue empowering volunteers to advocate for sustainable solutions within their communities. Kunchanada exemplifies a holistic approach to addressing the Human-Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka. Through research, community involvement, and innovative solutions, the project not only seeks to protect both humans and elephants but also fosters a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

The selected beekeeper, Mr. Buddika Chathuranga, received support in branding, marketing, and business planning. The project facilitated connections with potential buyers, investors, and industry experts, and promoted the beekeeper's products through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. This phase demonstrated beekeeping’s potential as a viable business model and helped the beekeeper achieve broader market reach. The short-term objectives included raising community awareness about beekeeping and equipping the beekeeper with essential business skills. This project tackles the challenges faced by visually and hearingimpaired children in marginalized communities. Project Daas unfolds in two phases. The first phase focused on supporting visually impaired students at Sri Sudarshi Vidyalaya Bandarawela. Recognizing the scarcity of Braille resources, the project implemented creative solutions. Social media campaigns showcasing the students' talents and struggles raised public awareness and garnered community support. To address the Braille paper shortage, Project Daas collected unwrinkled waste paper from public offices for Braille notes, reducing dependence on expensive paper. Revenue from unusable paper went towards purchasing Braille frames. Furthermore, collaboration with local institutions yielded 2,000 old textbooks, expanding educational materials for the students. Project Daas also organized career guidance sessions featuring successful visually impaired individuals, fostering self-belief and broader career aspirations. Finally, a special session acknowledged the dedication of the caretakers, promoting a more positive learning environment. Building on this success, the second phase empowered students with hearing impairments by enhancing their communication skills. Working with the school, ten students were identified for hearing aids. Project Daas partnered with audiology professionals to conduct comprehensive hearing evaluations. Based on individual needs, customized hearing aids were procured, ensuring maximum effectiveness. Sponsorships, like from the Rotary Club of Badulla, helped acquire these aids. Training sessions for students, teachers, and caretakers on proper hearing aid use and maintenance ensured ongoing support and maximized the benefit from the devices. Koratuwa Initiation - 2023/10/11 Volunteer Hours – 315 Hours Secondary Avenues - Environmental Service Project Chairperson - VL Bambaradeniya, WMK Lakmal Rtr. I. Illangasinghe Project Koratuwa, spearheaded by the Rotaract Club of Uva Wellassa University in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Badulla and local stakeholders, is a transformative community service initiative aimed at introducing modern home gardening techniques to marginalized communities in the Badulla District of Sri Lanka. Over the span of a year, the project engaged the Department of Export Agriculture of Uva Wellassa University and the university’s agro club to address critical issues such as poverty, malnutrition, and limited agricultural knowledge by empowering these communities to cultivate fresh, nutritious produce at home. The primary objective of Project Koratuwa was to combat food insecurity and malnutrition in Badulla by equipping residents, particularly school children, with the skills and resources to establish sustainable home gardens. The project also aimed to foster entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency through the adoption of innovative agricultural techniques. Additionally, the initiative sought to enhance agricultural knowledge and practices, promoting sustainable solutions that would positively impact the daily lives of people affected by Sri Lanka’s economic crisis. To achieve goals, Project Koratuwa introduced several modern gardening techniques, including vertical gardening, hydroponics, microgreens cultivation, and the production of liquid organic fertilizers. Vertical gardening was promoted to maximize space utilization in urban and peri-urban areas, enabling families to grow more food in limited spaces. Hydroponics, which uses minimal water and eliminates the need for soil, allowed year-round cultivation of various crops, reducing dependency on traditional farming methods. The cultivation of microgreens provided a quick and nutrient-dense food source, while the production of compost tea and fruit tonics offered sustainable fertilization options using locally available materials. The project was implemented through a series of workshops and hands-on sessions conducted in schools and a local children's home, reaching over 125 students and their parents. These workshops provided practical training in modern gardening techniques, emphasizing the benefits of each method and demonstrating how to set up and maintain home gardens. The workshops also highlighted the entrepreneurial potential of microgreens, encouraging participants to explore this as a micro-business opportunity. A strong public relations campaign was integral to the project’s success, targeting school children, households, and community leaders to build awareness and support for the initiative. The campaign included leaflets, posters, and community events to disseminate information and inspire widespread adoption of the new gardening practices. Project Koratuwa’s innovative approach significantly contributed to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Zero Hunger, by improving food security and nutrition in Badulla. The initiative also promoted sustainable agricultural practices, aligning with Rotary International’s focus areas of economic development and community building. By fostering a culture of sustainability and self-reliance, the project empowered marginalized communities, ensuring longterm benefits for future generations. Through the dedicated efforts of the Rotaract Club, the Rotary Club of Badulla, and various local partners, Project Koratuwa successfully introduced modern home gardening to Badulla’s marginalized communities, creating a lasting impact on their food security, nutrition, and agricultural practices. 67
