INTERVIEW

What does the Mediterranean way of life mean to you Every corner of the
and how can it be captured in a picture? Mediterranean coast
has its own color.
The Mediterranean is not just Greece; every corner has its
own color. But the way I see it as a Greek, the Mediterranean
way of life is about a whitewashed Cycladic arch, a tavern on
pebbles, saltness and nudity, walking carefree with your feet
bare.Sometimes photographs capture some of these elements,
but I am not sure if anyone can really get the Mediterranean
feeling without actually experiencing it.

You have traveled all over the world. What makes the
Mediterranean summer so unique?

Quality of life, I would say. Good food as well. Clear waters.
And, of course, the sunny weather.

Your works tell stories in the most natural way. Do you
travel only to take pictures or does your wandering also
leads to a vacation photo album?

I photograph in a targeted way,I always come up with a plan.
I’m not one of those people with a camera in hand.As soon as
a photographic vision is created in me, I then take great care
to make it a reality.

I have it both ways, depending on the occasion. In Ameri-

destination, just looking for the perfect image. Other times, I
went straight to the spot I already knew it would interest me.

How do you manage to capture all this emotion in your
pictures?

I’m afraid it’s not for me to answer that.

How could you describe your relationship with the liquid

I’m definitely attracted to it.My Global Summer project was

The Town Clock Tower is the oldest church
building on the Costa del Sol area. Most of the
small houses here were built in the 18th and the
19th centuries.

The Old Town And The Roots

Estepona, whose roots are traced in the 4th century,
is situated in Andalusia in the province of Málaga, and
has long been influenced by its coastal location nearby
the Gibraltar Strait. This became even more pronounced
during the Moorish period, thus making it a significant
center of the time.

Dated back in the 15th century, the Castillo de San
Luis was built by order of Queen Isabella in order to
protect the city from the Moorish invaders. Most of the
small houses here were built in the 18th and the 19th
centuries, while the narrow streets of the Old Town were
reconstructed after the 1950s. Today, these alleys and
squares are the most iconic features of the area. The
church of Los Remedios dominates here, a 18th-century
Franciscan monastery built of sandstone, a local ma-
terial rich in iron; it is worth a visit purely to admire the
architecture. The Town Clock Tower, originally part of a
temple completed in 1473, is the oldest church building

TRAVEL CULTURE

The new breed
of travelers decoded

Modern travelers are not tourists. They are holidaying “somewhere else”
to discover, feel and experience a new place, meet its communities

and get a better grasp of the wonderful world we all live in. That is why we decided
to decode the magic of being a traveler in a world full of tourists.

TRAVEL CULTURE

“P lease be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people,
and look beyond what is right in front of you. Those are the keys to
understanding this amazing world we live in”. This more than wise
piece of advice is well said by the American chef Andrew Zimmern

and it encapsulates the exact spirit of the gorgeous people who do Keep your memories
forever.
not leave their place to go to another just to have fun or to release

the pressure of a whole year of hard working. If you want to be one of them, you just have

to follow suit their core values.

Meet With The Local Communities

No one knows a place better than its common people.
That is why these people are the best to “dance” you to its
real tempo and show you its authentic way of living, that,
most of the times, in every destination, has nothing to do
with its touristic façade. Although this façade that is “sold”
by most of the touristic guides is indeed part of the local
culture and its attraction, there is a certain charm in drop-
ping it for the uncertainty of discovering a place by word
of mouth and, on top of that, by mingling with people that
have nothing to gain from spreading their authentic lifestyle.
So, if you want to experience a place in its originality, you
really have to learn how the locals, when no tourist sees
them, entertain themselves and what things are important
to them. Get info from members of the staff of your hotel
or even from passers-by. They are more “pure”. Try a walk
in a neighborhood where there are no touristic shops or
restaurants at sight, see a local film in a theater (whether
you speak the language or not). Activities like these are going
to give you the opportunity to be around people that they
would not change their behavior to fit yours.

Travel To Discover, Feel
And Experience

Traveling must always be a multi-sensational experience
that challenges your ways of how things are being done.
Every holiday must be a full trip to discovery, an attempt
to map the unknown or to see the very same things from a
different perspective. Discovering cannot be completed by
following the directions that you somewhere read. You got to
be lost in the new place you are in to feel its real beat. Take
the road less traveled even when it comes to sightseeing,

hiding precious experiences; an unexpected encounter with
an underestimated monument, an overlooked piece of art
or an unexplored land of unprecedented natural beauty. Be
curious and brave. Do not hesitate to try a local specialty
you haven’t read about in a book, accept a glass of wine
produced not to be sold but to be enjoyed only by “friends
and family”. Spend more time to gaze the colors of a sunset,
to spot the details in the silhouette of a ceramic vase or to
taste all the ingredients of a recipe you may never be served
again. Be alert and constantly present in the place you are
in and have always in mind that the new kind of traveler
is at the same time a modern empiricist. Accept that all
things are knowable only through experience (empeiria,
in ancient Greek). Also, try to forget. Forget what you have
already learned, the easy ways you have gotten used to, the
certainties you carry with you as part of the place you come
from. This de-learning will help you to be more receptive
to the beauty a new place has to offer you and at the same
time to be more loyal to your inner desires. In any case, being
spontaneous and acting without a filter is the par excellence
way to get closer to the core of your existence.

Be A Traveler In A World Spend more time to gaze
Full Of Tourists the colors of a sunset.

Tourism is the concept that the new breed of travelers
scorns upon. According to Britannica, tourism refers to “the act and process of spending
time away from home in pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure, while making use of
the commercial provision of services”. More than this, tourism, more commonly, is associated
with the masses, with following the “beaten path”, with living a “packed experience” and, in
some cases, with behaving the worst version of you. As a word, it was coined at the end of 18th
century. So, tourism is “historical”. Although people in the past have always been longing and
burning inside to travel to different places, they were not tourists. That is why it is absolutely
true to say that the new breed of travelers is actually bringing back the original, ancient art of
leaving a place to get to know the unknown.

The tour of

The taste of the W
sea comes right
to the table. Walking through the amazing beaches of Halkidiki,I think of the coolness of
mount Holomontas and its forests with oaks and firs. I remember my stop for
attending “kazanemata”,the party that locals set up around the boiling cauldron
to produce the “mudovina”,the local tsipouro with honey. In an area where the

sun shines brightly bathing it from end to end, there is an
entire society living and working all year round to produce
the quality products of the land. I think about culture and
the stone buildings of the Parthenon village, the “sahnisia”,
these characteristic wooden extensions of the houses, but
also the amazing bright colors of Macedonian architecture.
In such a majectic setting my mind travels beyond the
ordinary, to the breathtaking morning dives by the time
the sun is rising behind the mountain, and to those endless
conversations by the side of a calm sea late at noons,
when the sun begins to hide behind mount Olympus.
The tour of Mount Athos and the circumnavigation of
Hersonissos are emblematic; there is an eerie in the air
that will excite your curiosity in front of the unknown and
a deep calmness that will revitalize your spirit. The trip
to the beloved Halkidiki is filled by the scents of the pine
forest in Diaporo, a tiny island with warm, crystal-clear,
turquoise waters all year long, and the exotic beach of
Myrsini, or “Hawaii”. It is in this trip’s DNA to combine

Halkidiki a feeling of sweet fulfilment and satisfaction,
from the welcoming all-green mountains and the
small households to the stories of the village people
unfolding one after the other as the trip goes on.And,
of course, from the perfect sunny days at the beach
to the all-night parties and the laughs until the first

The Honey Of Halkidiki

The aromatic plants and the rich flora of mountainous Halkidiki, in com-
bination with the clean environment, turn the area into an ideal place for the
beekeepers and the production of exceptional quality honey. Look for local
honey in the shops of the area, especially in Arnaia, and try to find your favorite.

The Famous Vineyards And Gastronomy

This time of the year, I walk through one of the vineyards overlooking the
tower of Ouranoupolis and I notice the grapes that are almost ready for har-
vest. The taste and the aromas of each wine will travel around the world and
whisper stories about its place of origin. Assyrtiko, Athiri, Malagouzia, Limnio,
Moschato Hamburg and Xinomavro, but also many international varieties such
as Syrah and Grenache Rouge, will be poured into glasses and offer authentic
good life experiences. Our tour starts in some of the most historical wineries of
the country and continues to small modern wineries with a distinct character
in terms of both taste and hospitality. With a glass of wine in hand, we are
now ready to indulge in the next big chapter of the philosophy of Halkidiki,

The Iconic Taxiarchis

A full-day tour in Halkidiki will easily make you forget
the theory that sandy beaches is all it has to offer you.
Follow your compass north and uphill to the settlement
of Taxiarchis and the homonymous University Forest.
Located on the southwestern slopes of Holomontas, the
forest consists of various species of trees, such as oak,
beech, pine, fir and arbutus, yew and heather. Visit the
Forest Museum and see the exhibitions related to the local flora and fauna.
Among the wild animals and birds that live in the forest, you will meet wild
boars,wolves,foxes,ferrets,weasels,badgers,wildcats,hawks,partridges and
bats. Prepare prorerly for crossing the forest through a safe walking route
with professional guidance to follow and do not forget to save some time to

Time for experimenting and having fun at the

in ancient Stageira where, in his honor, in 1956, they
erected his imposing statue near the settlement. This
spot developed into a beautiful educational theme
park, which hosts many interactive experimental
instruments, based on the writings of Aristotle and in
particular his work “Physics”.Among the instruments
you will find there are the compass, the telescope,
the prism, the sundial, the lens, the pentaphon, the
optical discs and the pendulum.

The Archanthropus
Of Petralona

The important history of the area is strongly re-
flected in the exhibits that the visitor will encounter
at the Archaeological Museum in Polygyros. The
museum hosts three permanent exhibitions, one
with findings from the most important archaeological
sites of the prefecture, another with findings from
the three colonies of Andros in Halkidiki –Stageira,
Akanthos and Sani–, as well as the exhibition of the
Lambropoulos Collection, which consists of local
clay figurines and busts, bronze vessels and jewelry.
At the same location you will find one of the most
well-known caves in Greece,the Petralona Cave.This
is where, in 1960, the skull of the 700,000 year-old
Archanthropus was found! A definite must-see,don’t
