Encounter
Encounter provides the missing link between the child that needs conventional
play equipment to young teenagers who do not wish to be seen ‘playing’ but
still need a facility where they can socialise with their contemporaries.
Every visual and ergonomic element of the design has been created
using consultation with youths between 11 and 17.
The technical design, in terms of its engineering and composition of materials meets the requirements
of BS EN 1176. Although not strictly play equipment we believe this rigorous standard should still
apply, particularly in terms of strength testing, knowing from our experience in the industry that this
group will climb, crawl, hang and use the structure in ways for which it was not necessarily intended.

Safer Surfacing
When providing a safe environment for
children to play in, the surface on which
they play is particularly important.
We all know that from time to time children will accidentally
fall from even the safest piece of equipment when playing.
The purpose of safer surfacing is to cushion the impact of a
child’s accidental fall and reduce the severity of an injury.
To meet the requirements of BS EN 1176 and
BS EN 1177, Playdale recommend that impact absorbing
surfaces must be installed beneath all equipment
with a free height of fall greater than 0.6m.
We offer a wide range of safer surfacing, including Wet Pour,
tiles, synthetic grass and loosefill. In some circumstances
a well maintained natural grass surface can be considered
as a safer surface up to a free fall height of 1.5m.
The appropriate surfacing for your site will depend on several
factors; type of equipment, cost, durability, aesthetic appearance,
maintenance, local ground and climatic conditions.

All surfacing offered by Playdale has been independently tested
to ensure full compliance with BS EN 1177 and BS 7188.
The installation of each surfacing type is closely
monitored through our ISO9001 quality system to

GrassLok
GrassLok consists of 0.5m x 0.5m
interlocking recycled PVC / rubber tiles
designed specifically for use as safety Playground Extras & Surfacing

The tiles allow existing grass to grow through,
which can then be mown as usual. GrassLok
can provide a critical fall height (CFH) of
up to 3m. However, the CFH is dependant
on site specific factors such as soil type,

Playdale Bonded
Rubber Mulch
Solid black rubber shred from recycled
rubber that is then coloured with a unique
encapsulation process. The rubber shred is then
bound with a specially formulated PU binder.
Bonded Rubber Mulch can be laid onto solid,
compacted ground with a membrane. Unlike Wet
Pour it does not require a subbase or any edging.
It also follows the contours of the existing surface.
Available in critical fall heights of 1.6m, 2.6m and
3.0m all with full certification to BS EN 1177.

Wet Pour
Wet Pour is a continuous rubber surface that
gives a high quality, hard wearing, slip-resistant
surface requiring little or no maintenance.
Mixed on site, the rubber EPDM granule
and polyurethane resin mixture is wet laid to
various thicknesses onto a prepared area.
The thickness and area of Wet Pour is determined
by the free height of fall of the equipment
installed. The correct thickness and area of Wet
Pour is laid around each piece of equipment to
provide a sufficient level of impact absorbency.
Wet Pour is available in a range of colours.
Although the standard colour is black, a coloured
fleck can be added to enhance appearance of
the finished area. Coloured shapes, logos and
floor games can be laid into the surface to give an
individual theme and provide additional play value.
Wet Pour complies with BS EN 1177
and BS 7188. Test certificates are
supplied for all thicknesses offered.

Loosefill
Loosefill safer surfacing has excellent impact
absorbing properties and combines well with
many units to give a warm, natural appearance. Playground Extras & Surfacing
The capital cost of loosefill surfacing is
far less than Wet Pour and tiles, however
maintenance costs (i.e. raking and top-
ups) should be taken into account.
To meet the requirements of BS EN 1176 and BS
EN 1177, all Playdale loosefill surfaces should be
maintained to the correct depth as specified. The
use of raised loosefill areas will aid drainage.
Cushionfall
This is an environmentally friendly surface,
produced from recycled timber products.
The shredded timber gives excellent
impact absorbing properties and is
provided in a variety of colours.

Tiles
The rubber tiles we use provide a finished
surface with similar properties as Wet Pour. The
tiles are laid onto a prepared concrete base. Playground Extras & Surfacing
The tiles are prefabricated, 1m x 1m, and
are supplied in various thicknesses.
The thickness of the tile used is dependent on
the Critical Fall Height (CFH) of the equipment.
The standard colour is black but the tiles

Quad Pavers
Quad Pavers can be a cost effective
way of providing a wear & tear resistant
surface at small points of high wear.
20mm thick, hard wearing, black rubber tiles are
bonded onto 50mm thick concrete paving slabs
(600mm x 600mm). Quad Pavers can be installed
flush into existing grass surfaces to provide a child
friendly path or at points of high wear i.e. adjacent
to Springers or at the end of Adventure Trails.
Quad Pavers can also be used in conjunction
with loosefill surfaces at points of high wear i.e.
beneath swing seats or at the end of slides.

Matta Tiles
An open mesh tile surface constructed from prefabricated, interlocking
tiles 500mm x 500mm made from recycled rubber & PVC.
Safety Matta
This system is designed to promote maximum grass growth to create an
aesthetically pleasing installation that blends in to the environment. Once
the grass is established it can be simply mowed over as usual.
The Safety Matta system consists of two separate layers, a mesh underlay and the rubber & PVC mats.
Safety Matta has been independently tested to BS EN 1177 and
BS 7188 providing a critical fall height of 2.7m.
Play Matta
This system is designed to be installed on to existing hard surfaces such as
tarmac or concrete.The Play Matta system consists of three separate layers, a
shockpad base, a layer of weed barrier and the rubber & PVC mats.
Play Matta has been independently tested to BS EN 1177 and BS 7188 providing a critical fall
height of 1.5m when fitted with a 35mm shockpad & 2.8m when fitted with a 60mm shockpad.

Steel Ground Fixing
This is a high strength, highly durable system for
installing playground equipment. Galvanised steel
brackets are secured to the timber poles lifting
them clear of the surface. The steel brackets are
then concreted into holes in the ground. This
method of fixing increases the life of the timber
upright and offers an extensive 20 year guarantee.
