CONSTRUCTIONDAY2023: BUILDBACKBETTER 8 ABOUT WRMSDC WESTERN REGIONAL MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL The best way to make sure children have access to food, safety, and education is to ensure that parents and caregivers have good jobs. As a family’s income increases, their exposure to violence, poverty, and the likelihood of incarceration decreases. Our programs drive the job and wealth creation essential to thriving underserved communities. Please consider donating to WRMSDC. MISSION We support the growth and welfare of minority communities by championing the use of minority-owned businesses in Northern California, Nevada, and Hawai‘i. HISTORY WRMSDC was founded on September 9, 1977, almost 10 years after the Civil Rights Movement that sparked national awareness about racial discrimination and segregation in the United States. Galvanized by the unequal treatment of minority-owned businesses, we began serving as advocates for impacted minority communities. Our parent organization, the National Minority Supplier Development Council, advances business opportunities for certified MBEs and connects them to 1,450 Corporate Members throughout the network, including America’s top public and privately owned companies as well as universities, hospitals and other buying institutions. Regional A liates like WRMSDC certify and match more than 12,000 MBEs with member corporations that want to purchase their products, services, and solutions. Please visit us online at www.wrmsdc.org.

At WRMSDC, we believe that no family should face hunger, violence, and poverty. Yet, in America, 24% of Native Americans, 21% of African Americans, and 17% of Latinos live in high-poverty neighborhoods compared to 4% of the Caucasian population¹. For African Americans, one in five are living in poverty for the third generation in a row, compared to one in one hundred Caucasian Americans². The typical African American family has $24,000 of wealth, the typical Hispanic family $36,000, and other families (Asian, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, mixed races, and other races) $74,000, compared to $188,000 for the typical Caucasian family³ . This relentless cycle of poverty is the legacy of centuries of racism and exploitation of communities of color 4 . To address these racial gaps, WRMSDC works to support people of color who have founded their own companies to make a better life for themselves and their families. We help them gain the funding, education, and connections essential to feeding their families, supporting their communities, and building intergenerational wealth. By supporting our programs, you can help us break the cycle of poverty for future generations. https://wrmsdc.org/
