For our readers reference, the Helping Hands Yeg judging protocol was as follows:
There were a total of 5 participating judges, with each assigned two or more categories
to oversee. At the show’s completion, the judges met to agree upon the winners in each
category. All winners were unanimously agreed to. All the judges were automotive
enthusiasts, and although many had personally customized vehicles, none were permitted
entry into categories for award consideration.

I’ll never forget the day that our son, Deklin,
was born. In those days, I was spending long
hours at work. I was corporate counsel for
a publicly traded company with operations

I went in to work knowing the day was

my meeting, and shortly after the meeting

1980 PORSCHE 911
We at Helping Hands are suckers for a good old exotic,
and that is why from the moment our judges laid
their eyes on Speedtech’s beautiful cherry red 1980
Porsche 911, they knew they had a serious contender.
Speedtech’s eye catching Porsche comes equipped
with a K24 Acura engine, Porsche turbo flares, RWB
(RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF) rear spoiler, K-Tuned, AEM
(advanced engine management) ECU (engine control
unit), and Speedfactory upgrades just to name a few.
The Porsche also boasts an adjustable ride height due
to torsion bars, which facilitate lowering the vehicle
without additional parts, although Bisimoto rear
coilovers are also in future plans for this outstanding
vehicle. In short, Speedtech’s eye candy of a vehicle
without a doubt gave us no choice but to crown them
title of best exotic.

yrs. in a row. He would drive the van 1/2 way and
I would cycle, then he would drive on to Radium
and when I arrived we would douse ourselves in

at 90 a couple of years ago. Like I said every
summer we would go away for a week (where ever
he wanted to go) and camp! Wife sewed ‘new’

my wife & I use it for trips to Jasper etc. during
the summer! Only modifications is a Mega Squirt

trips. It also has an add-a-room tent that gives

“HOT WHEELS”
The truck was once my dads farm truck that we
used to take everywhere. After a few years of
driving the engine went and it stayed parked
beside a tree and a old tractor for 10 years. After
about 10 years I asked my dad if I can have the
farm truck and decided I would fix it up and
use it as an everyday drive. I painted the truck
blue and added some bells and whistles to it and
enjoyed the truck in my early 20s. It was until
one day someone decided to steal it from my
parents house and was found stripped 2 weeks
later leaving only the shell of the truck. I got
the truck back (shell) and parked it at the farm
losing interest in rebuilding it.
After about 14 years I decided to rebuild the
truck and make it a project I can do with my
young kids. The truck quickly became known
as the “hot wheels” and the rest was history.
My family now enjoys summer rides and
attending car shows in the summer.

GROUNDING MEDITATION
This exercise is to bring back your focus to your body
and the moment. Try to find a comfortable spot to sit or
lay down. Start by closing your eyes and taking some
deep breaths. When you are ready tense your toes for a
couple deep breaths then relax them completely. Now
tense your calf’s, slowly moving up your body tensing
one muscle group at a time and focusing on tensing only
that group. Leave the rest of your body as relaxed as
possible. It’s just you, your body and your breathing.
Once you’ve done this all the way up to and including
your head take a minute to focus on that feeling of
calmness and slack coming back to the present and
opening your eyes whenever you are ready.

Andrew Boykiw’s love for automobiles started very young. His love is so much so that
it extends well beyond the realms of hobby and into a profession. Andrew’s love for

with cancer. The value of the Rx7 goes above and beyond dollars for Andrew. To him
it is a reminder of his father, a symbol that he will always be at his side. In fact, he has
his father’s initials on the passenger seat. Through the difficult times that Andrew had
to endure from the loss of his father he now appreciates and understands the value of

Accepting Help
In depression, getting medical treatment is essential, b ut it is
also possible to “help yourself.”
This may seem difficult when you are suffering from depression, but it can be
done…with a little help. Don’t be afraid to reach out and accept help.
From a Healthcare Professional
Depression is an illness that requires medical care. But, medical care cannot happen unless you decide to seek it. If
you do get help, being involved in your ongoing treatment will be important.
Getting help from a healthcare professional is taking an important first step on your journey towards improvement.
Your doctor, psychiatrist or psychologist can recommend care customized to your needs. T he healthcare
professional you chose may recommend psychotherapy or antidepressant therapy.
Taking an active role such as: discussing your symptoms, inquiring about your treatment, or seeking more advice, is
essential to the success of your treatment.
From Those Close to You
A person with depression may feel guilty and at fault, which may make them hesitant to seek any outside help. This
is a false impression. In fact, if you suffer from depression, help from those close to you can be especially valuable.
Expressing how you feel to people you trust when you are not well, crying if you want to… this is all part of a natural
process which can make you feel better. Those close to you can also provide
helpful accompaniment for medical care.
This is why, even though it can be difficult, it is important to accept help, express how you are feeling and trust those
close to us. Try to discard concerns such as, “they will think I should just get over it,” or “they’ll think I’m a burden to
them.”
Start by Saying How You Feel
Be honest and open about what you are experiencing. Simply talking a bout your
depression and everything you are feeling can help you feel better.
Ways of starting a conversation
“I saw a doctor because I hadn’t been feeling very well for a while, and I would like to talk
to you about it.”
“Now that I know I have depression, my health has to be my priority.”
“My doctor told me I have depression. I am getting treatment to feel better, but your
support would really help as well.”
“You know I have been receiving treatment for depression and although I feel better, I just
don’t feel like my old self yet. I was wondering what you have noticed?”
34
Explaining Depression
Share what you have learned about depression; for example, that it is a real illness that can be treated. Your friends
and family are your support system. The better they understand your illness, the more support they can give you.
Say What You Need
Remember that you are not alone.
By asking your friends and family for support, you will enjoy the comfort of knowing that they are there for you. At
the same time they will know they are an important part of your life as well. So do not be hesitant to ask them for
help, such as by accompanying you to a doctor’s appointment or helping you obtain more information.
JOURNEY TO IMPROVEMENT
If you happen to recognize
symptoms of depression in
yourself, the key is not to
let worry take over. In fact,
recognizing symptoms is an
essential step on the road to
feeling like oneself again.
This information is here to
help you reconnect with the
person you once were and
the quality of life you once
enjoyed.
The following steps are
especially important
1. Learn more about depression
In addition to talking to your doctor, learn about how depression can affect you by viewing What is Depression ?
2. Talk to your friends and family
You do not have to face depression alone. Your loved ones can be a source of comfort and emotional support and
may be able to help you find a doctor or therapist. Many people often find relief in talking about depression with
friends and family.
3. Make an appointment with a doctor
Visit your doctor or another healthcare professional to discuss any possible symptoms you may be feeling. If you do
have depression they will work with you to plan a course of action that you feel good about. Your doctor may also
suggest you see a specialist, such as a psychiatrist or a therapist.
