10 HOMES & STYLES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE | Mid May - Mid July, 2022

This is why antique collectors have become vital H&SINTERIORS
in preserving this history as well as serving as
both educators and providers of a wide variety
of antiques and treasure items.
In Zimbabwe, Birch Williams is passionate
in preserving antiques and has been in the
business for over 30 years.
Homes & Styles Magazine took time to visit
him at his showrooms at Doon Estate in Msasa,
Harare, for an interview where he poured
out his heart on his passion, which he has also
merged with his home design and arrangement
talent.
“My obsession with antiques and interior design
and arrangement started at a very young age
when I used to watch Roger Hamilton King
doing the display in his shop at Fife Avenue Mall.
I was around 10 or 11 years at that time.At 13, I
would bunk school to attend antique sales.
“My interest in design in general is, I believe, an
inherent thing. I have never done any course
or studies and yet I know naturally how things
should be arranged,” he said in an interview.
A random saunter in his showrooms will show
a variety of antique collections and other
treasured ornaments from cupboards, tables
and chairs, silverware, artwork, wall hangings,
chandeliers, vases among others.
He has grouped his collections in four
showrooms which represent different styles.
African Baroque is largely filled with Victorian

and pieces and Acacia Trading, is a mixture of

way.
In Acacia Trading, the touch of Birch’s hand in
arranging and designing can be seen as the
showroom already exudes the beauty of
antiques when properly arranged.
Besides collecting and selling to customers who
still see value in antiques, Birch Williams has
used his talent to help customers that buy his
collection in designing their homes leaving them
with a tasteful and stylish look.
Antiques often display fine craftsmanship
that is harder to come by today and feature
intricate wood carving, marquetry, or decorative
flourishes that one will not find in run-of-the-
mill modern-day furniture.
“Antiques are a dying resource and you can’t
get more. Until recently, there was real good
craftsman in the world but we are getting into
a time where there is no real craftsmanship left,
everything is now being mass produced and
disposable. So anybody in the future as we go
along that seeks really good quality furnishings
will have to buy antiques.
“Learning an interest in old things that were
beautifully made and not mass manufactured
is rewarding and fulfilling especially in a world
that is so automated and devoid of most
emotion. Antiques carry with them history and

” he says.
He also adds that as people are going for
smaller and smaller places and going for
disposable decor, they literally leave everything
behind when they shift and start over again. This
is environmentally unfriendly.
“Imagine how the world will be in the next
20 or 30 years to come with piles and piles of
unwanted furniture.”
In his many years in dealing in antiques,Williams
has hosted a number of famous people at his
shop but the most revered include the late
Golden Globes Award winner Dana Wynter,
who bought a few pieces from his shop as well
as actress Reese Witherspoon who used to find
comfort in viewing antiques at his shop during
her visit to Zimbabwe.
He has also used his interior design skills to

you often see in contemporary design.

Modern style is all about clean lines and
geometric features. Seamless lines provide
a soft look with minimal fuss.
You can commission your next piece with

3. Wooden Bases
Again, we see straight lines and edges
in wooden bases. This is a simple way of

Natural plaster finishes are just my
favourite thing in the design world at the
moment. Embracing materials and texture
adds a warm yet vibrant feel to any space.
Next time you are at Artisan, ask them
about their floor and wall plaster finishes.
They are amazing at what they do!

5. Cylindrical and Rounded Furniture
This is my go to trend of the year so far.
Cylindrical shapes in natural elements like
marble or wood, I absolutely love it!

6. Natural Finishes in New Colours
It’s time to think outside the box here.Take
a natural element and add a new color on
top. It will give a new sense of depth and
character.
Zimllrey is great for functional art pieces

Geometric shapes and angles are on the
rise. These natural lines have a minimal
contemporary feel that is both grounding
and calming.

8. Warm Woods
Warm tones of earths elements creates a
homely and cosy feel. Having wood in the
house doesn’t have to have a rustic feel.
You can modernize this quite easily with
clean lines, shapes and muted fabric tones.

9. Sculptural Objects
Just like cylindrical and organic shapes,
modern sculptural objects add a
contemporary feel to to any space.

10. Nature inspired Fabric
To compliment the neutral tones, adding
nature inspired scatter cushions will enhance
the overall feel of your room.
Local surface pattern designers, Philippa

this trend!

WINDOW SEATS H&S
Relaxation areas are an essential part of
architectural designs nowadays. Window seats
are a wonderful place to chill out and relax
with a good book or sip a cup of coffee while
watching the rain. These window seats can
also be incorporated into the kitchen or the
bedroom.
MAKE A STATEMENT WITH PATTERNS
ON ACCESSORIES
Accessories such as vases, books and bowls are
not just objects to pleasure the eye. They can
be both functional and delightful in their forms.
A space without accessories, no matter how
beautifully decorated or furnished, will be left
looking and feeling bare. Accessories are like
the cherry on top, offering visual interest and
detail. They make spaces come alive and make
the design scheme come together as they add
texture, colour, pattern and form.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES
Since 2020 people are starting to understand
that they can live with less. People now realise
that their rooms can be multifunctional and
are becoming more creative with their spaces.
Home schooling and working from home has
had people converting bedrooms and living
rooms into work spaces. Each space can now
be multifunctional, for example, you can have a
gym in the home office.
CREATE CURVES WITH ROUNDED
EDGES
Sharp angles on furniture have been prevalent
in most homes and offices for a while, from
upholstered furniture right through to surfaces
and architectural details. Trends in furniture
are moving towards rounded or curved
smoothness and not sharp edges. Rounded
edges and curvaceous design create a much
more welcoming space. “Furnishings of white
oak with curves bring a fresh and soft wavy
feeling. From curved corners within walls and
cabinets to curved backs of sofas, dining chairs
and arched cabinets, the angular line of furnishing
is softening.” -Mitchelle Harrison-McAllister

4. Prep your home
This may seem like an invalid point considering
you can still smell the fresh paint and you still
haven’t connected the new SMEG fridge yet.
It is, however, one thing to have a new house
and quite another to have a new home that
feels lived in. Consider what your guests will
experience. What will they smell? What will
they hear? What will they touch? What will they
see? Unlike some other house parties no room
should be off-limits. Get to the point where
you feel good about all the rooms. Every room
should be open and accessible. Burn a diffuser an
hour before guests arrive, set the music on low
and have fresh cut flowers. When it comes to
actually taking people through the house, unless
you want to give several tours, you can lead one
about halfway through your get-together.
5. Authenticity
Let who you are shine through. If you have
always been the fun couple then don’t expect
people to come and sit around quietly. You could
have a few games set up for entertainment.
(Look out for my upcoming piece on how to
host a lux game night.) If you are nature lovers
have a cheese and s’mores board set-up beside
the bonfire. Ask yourself what you want people
to remember most about this day or night
and make that your main focus. A few days
after the event be sure to send out thank you
cards or e-cards to your guests to show your
appreciation.

by the railways authorities and

Tbecame the first real tourist
hotel in the territories being
opened up north of the Limpopo river at the
start of the 20th century. Within a year or so,
the famed bridge across the Zambezi was
completed, linking what is now Zimbabwe and
Zambia with rail and, later, road access.

For its first 65 years it was the only
hotel on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi,
offering something different to the hotels on
the northern side, in the town of Livingstone.
It started off as a small establishment, with a
handful of bedrooms and public areas, all in
buildings made of corrugated iron. For much of
its early life the visitors came only by rail, but
road developments in the 1930s and, especially,
the 1960s, made road travel easy and quick.
Air travel came in the period just before the
Second World War and most of today’s arrivals
are by air, by way of the modern Victoria Falls
International Airport.

From the outset the hotel boasted a
spectacular view, down into the gorges below
the falls, up to the bridge spanning the first
gorge and across to the columns of spray rising
continuously up from the falling waters. And
matching the beauty of the area was a hotel that
offered comfort to the point of luxury, charm
and a set of services of a superior nature. It’s
relationship to the railways was always a feature,
not the least because it has a private stairway to
the railway station platform.
Activities for guests ranged from river cruises to
game drives in the surrounding national parks,
supplemented in recent decades by a huge set
of offerings, from air and helicopter rides over
the falls to bungee jumping off the bridge, and
many more besides.

Since its modest beginnings, the hotel
has grown, with fine accommodation and service
wings being built over the decades to cope
with modernisation, expansion and increased
numbers of guests. Two major wings reach
out from the central base as what are known
as ‘hammerheads’ – a design based on the old
crossed rail-tracks logo of the forerunner of the
National Railways of Zimbabwe. Other wings
reach out from the entrance area and between
the front and back blocks, and in the 1990s
came the Stables Wing, a delightful addition that
boosted bedroom and suite numbers to well
over 150.

The hotel’s flagship restaurant,
The Livingstone Room, was built in 1917 and
is today Zimbabwe’s longest-running dining
venue, where a dining experience is more than
just a meal. Another restaurant, Jungle Junction,
was built in the 1990s, standing where the old
Africa spectacular dance show ran nightly from
the 50s to the 80s. JJ, as it is popularly known,

the attractive courtyard between the entrance

desks. A delightful swimming pool area sits
across the garden.
At one point the hotel had its own billiards
room, while a huge chess board with human-

the hotel. One of Zimbabwe’s first cocktail bars
was created adjacent to the lounge, and there
was once a TV room, where guests could watch

days before satellite television became stand

is much cherished to this day.

A GM with a vision to add value to history
When Farai Chimba joined the management
team of The Victoria Falls Hotel in 2008, he
quickly realised that this assignment was not
just to ‘another’ hotel but to an establishment
with an envied and internationally-renowned
reputation, as well as a guest list made up of
tens of thousands of discerning travellers from
all over the world during more than a century
of operation.

With that in mind, he formed some
very clear pictures of the role of the hotel and
its team of staff and management, as well as of
what the hotel should look like, what it should
offer guests and what should make it unique in
a town with dozens and dozens of competitive
accommodation offerings.

Rising to the post of General Manager
in 2021, he’s at the helm of the hotel at an
exciting and demanding time: first, as it emerges
from the massive challenge of two years’
Covid-related closure or partial operation, and,
second, as it undertakes a major refurbishment
programme designed to gear it to the needs
of the 2020s and 2030s, well into its second
century.

The refurbishment is being
undertaken in phases, fitting in with budgetary,
administrative and logistical requirements. The

As GM, Farai Chimba’s vision is shared by the

point of luxury, convenience and ease of use,
modern but traditional, and adhering to guest
demands – such as providing showers, not

“The imprint of this refurbishment will lie over
the hotel for several decades to come, so it
must be undertaken with care and flair, so that
we respect its past and still meet present-day
expectations, and everything must work well,”
he said.
“What must be understood is that we of the
team of staff and management – as well as our
guests and the travel trade, and indeed anyone
who knows the hotel – regard this hotel as
very special and a refurbishment like this must
add value and take nothing away, must meet
expectations and still surprise, must deliver a
product that stands on 120 years of history
with a 21st-century offering that is stylish and

Over its many years,The Victoria Falls Hotel has

They’ve come expecting the

One of the earliest celebrity visitors
was George Darwin, astronomer and barrister,
who was the son of renowned naturalist
Charles Darwin, originator of the theory of
evolution. George came to officially open the
Victoria Falls Bridge in 1905. He was followed
by a great many other well-known people, most
of them having a break from their busy working
