The Defending Champion Brewster Whitecaps
Welcome You Back to Stony Brook Field!

Message from the President

Welcome to all of our Brewster Whitecaps fans, supporters and volunteers. Our
coaches and volunteers have been hard at work to provide you with another
exciting season of Whitecaps baseball as we defend our 2021 Cape Cod Baseball
League Championship!

What a journey last season proved to be for the Whitecaps. From overcoming the
potential impacts of COVID-19 that threatened the start of the season, to numerous
nail-biting victories throughout the campaign. And then - watching the Whitecaps
come back from an early 5-0 deficit to win the final game and clinch the
Championship. It was an awesome year!

Congratulations to Manager Jamie Shevchik, his coaching staff and players for Bob Graczewski, President
providing such a great season of memories for the Town of Brewster in 2021. Brewster Baseball Club

It has been my pleasure to work with a dedicated Board of Directors and volunteers who work so diligently year-round
to bring Brewster an outstanding summer baseball program.

Please browse through this yearbook to learn more about the people off the field who really make this all happen – host
families, interns, volunteers, plus the advertisers and donors that support our nonprofit organization financially.

It takes both money and time to have a successful organization. If you’d like to help, please visit our website at
brewsterwhitecaps.com to find opportunities to get involved.

Thanks so much for coming out to support the Whitecaps.
We couldn’t do it without you!

Tribute to George Small

George Small, for many years a passionate fan and enthusiastic supporter of the
Brewster Whitecaps, passed away on October 2, 2021. He was 86.
George was born in Dorchester, MA. He was a graduate of Bentley College
and Babson College. He became a CPA and spent more than 47 years at
Franklin Sports as VP and Controller. He was married to his beloved wife,
Judith, for 62 years.
For many summers, George spent most of his time in Brewster, rooting for and supporting the team
he loved, the Brewster Whitecaps. He enrolled his grand kids in the Whitecaps clinics, for which
Franklin Sports provided the soft, Safe-T balls. Then, decked out in Whitecaps branded attire, he
went out on the field and participated in the clinics himself!
Every year for more than a decade, he saw to it that each Whitecaps player received an official
Franklin equipment bag with Major League Franklin batting gloves inside – all at no cost to the
Whitecaps. One home game each season was designated as Franklin Sports Night at the Whitecaps,
usually on or about the 4th of July. At that game, George threw out the ceremonial First Pitch.
On many of those occasions, he conducted a baseball trivia game in which all attending children
were encouraged to participate. Then, in the late innings, assisted by his devoted grandchildren,
he personally presented a trunk load of prizes of Franklin Sports equipment to multiple, delighted
young trivia game winners.
If the Whitecaps had an award for Best All-time Fan and Supporter, George Small would win it
hands down. We miss you, George, and thanks for the memories.

the Year, 2021 EKL Pitcher of the Year, and 2021 KABC Class 6A
All-State First Team and Pitcher of the Year. He was rated the

Brewster welcomes back Teddy McGraw after a very successful
sophomore season with Wake Forest. He pitched 50.2 innings
with an ERA of 5.33. Against Duke he had seven strikeouts over
five innings of work, allowing only three hits. Last summer
with the Whitecaps McGraw helped secure the league title by
retiring three batters in succession in the ninth inning of the
final game. During his freshman season McGraw had 19 relief
appearances, striking out 22 batters and ending with a 4.42
ERA. In summer 2020 he pitched for the Amsterdam Mohawks
in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, where he had
a 1-1 record, striking out 18 in 10.1 innings. McGraw attended
high school in Oneonta, NY where he was rated as a top 500
prospect by Perfect Game, and the number 25 recruit from
New York.

Max McGwire Freshman 6-2, 190 R/R

starting in 13 games with 45 trips to the plate. Through May
10th he hit .222 with two home runs, 10 hits, and six RBI to
round off the start of his career with Oklahoma. A California
native, Max attended Capistrano Valley High School where he
was rated the number two first baseman nationally by Perfect
Game. In addition, Perfect Game ranked Max as the number
nine recruit and the top first baseman in California. In 2020 he
played in the Perfect Game All-American Classic, which was
held in Oklahoma. He is the son of former Major League
slugger, Mark McGwire.

Temp Players

The Whitecaps roster on page 5 presents the team’s “full contract” players, most of whom
signed up months ago to play here for the whole season. But the Cape League season starts

before many of them can be here, due to continuing obligations to their college teams.

That’s why Brewster, like every other team in the league, recruits “temporary” players who stay
on the roster until the contract guys arrive. So you’ll likely see some of the players listed here in uniform

for the Whitecaps early in the season. A few may end up playing the whole season, time will tell.

As you can see, being a “temp” is an iffy proposition, not to mention a bit of a revolving
door for our host families. The Whitecaps salute these players and their host families,
who make it possible for Brewster to field a competitve team for the entire season.

Thank you one and all!

League in Summer 2021, where he was awarded All-Star
status. During his freshman season at FSU, he had three
relief appearances, allowing one run in 2.2 innings with

summer 2021, Owen had a 2-1 record, appearing in eight
games. In 2021 as a freshman with the Dores, Owen made
14 appearances with 19 strikeouts across 16.2 innings of work.
His many accolades include his selection as a 2020 Perfect

Year in New Hampshire his junior year (2018). That season,
Oxford posted a 5-1 record with a microscopic 0.16 ERA and
threw four straight no-hitters over 30.2 consecutive hitless
innings.

Host Families
as of 5/27/22

Many thanks to these local families who open their homes and their hearts to provide
Whitecaps players with a home away from home. There would be no Whitecaps program without

our host families. They will host our players this summer and make memories for a lifetime.
Care to join them? You may also sample the experience by hosting a temporary player for
only a week or two in June. Please call Jennifer Kish for more information at 508 246-1220.

2021 Cape League Champions!

Whitecaps Bring Out the Broom - Brewster swept four games in a row to win the team’s second Cape League
crown in four years. In 2017, the Whitecaps played nine playoff games on nine consecutive days, facing
elimination in five of those games. It was the most games in a single season ever played by any Cape League
team.

We got the condensed version in 2021. Brewster finished first in the East Division with the club’s best-ever
record of 22-11 with three ties. In the playoffs the Whitecaps faced terrifically tough competition in first, the
Harwich Mariners, and then, should they survive that best-of-three series, the finals, also best-of-three, against
Bourne, arguably the strongest team in the league for most of the season.

Here's how it all went down. Castillo drives in
both Brewster runs
Game 1, Harwich at Brewster
Whitecaps 2, Mariners 0

Brewster’s Chad Castillo (Cal Baptist) drove in both
Whitecaps runs. The rest was taken care of by three
Brewster pitchers, who combined to toss a shut-out.
It was not without drama. Whitecaps starter Brian
Fitzpatrick (Rutgers) found himself in a jam early on,
when the Mariners put two on base with no outs.
Fitzpatrick calmly fanned the next three hitters to
wiggle off the hook. In the fifth inning, Harwich put
two runners in scoring position, but Michael Prosecky
(Louisville) marched in from the bullpen and ended
that threat. And again in the eighth, Harwich got the first two batters on base, but Prosecky took out the next
three in a row. And finally, Brewster’s cool hand closer, Dale Stanavich (Rutgers), came in to slam the door on
the Mariners in the ninth.

Game 2, Brewster at Harwich
Whitecaps 5, Mariners 4

Closer Stanavich saves A Tony Bullard (Arizona) solo homer made it 2-0 Whitecaps in the
three games in a row second inning, and by the eighth, Brewster led not so comfortably
4-1. Sure enough, Harwich came storming back to tie the game at
4-4 going to the ninth. Not to be outdone, Brewster loaded the
bases, followed by one of the strangest moments in Cape League
playoff history. The Harwich pitcher was called for a balk, which
advanced all Whitecaps runners one base, scoring the go-ahead
run for Brewster. Whitecaps closer Stanavich (Rutgers) showed his
appreciation for the gift by repeating his performance of the day
before, this time striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
Harwich was eliminated, and Brewster moved on to face Bourne
in the finals.

Game 1, Brewster at Bourne
Whiteaps 2, Braves 0

The Whitecaps had no business winning this game. They were playing an away game, delayed for an hour by
wet grounds, in front of more than 4,000 screaming fans, mostly rooting for their home team Braves. And they
were up against Bourne, who had the most team hits, second highest team batting average, and most wins in
the Cape League’s 2021 season. Oh, and they had just scored 15 runs in their previous two playoff games as
they eliminated Cotuit.

Fortunately for the Whitecaps, nobody mentioned those unfavorable circumstances to the Brewster pitching
staff. Instead, they decided to basically duplicate their first playoff win over Harwich.

28

Byrne drives in game The Whitecaps scored the only runs they would need in the second
winning runs inning. Kurtis Byrne (TCU) doubled home two for the lead and it
turned out, the final score.

Meanwhile, the mighty Braves could do nothing with Brewster’s
pitching. They got two runners on in the fifth, but starter Griffin
Green (VA Tech) struck out the next hitter to end that threat.
In all Green threw five innings, allowed three hits, no runs and struck
out seven. All Star reliever Michael Prosecky (Louisville) then
dominated for 3.1 innings, permitting only two hits, no runs while
striking out five.

But the Braves were not done. In the bottom of the ninth, they put
two runners on base and brought the winning run to the plate with
just one out. Time for Stanavich. For the third time in three games he
delivered. The Brewster closer fanned two in a row to
end the threat and the game. The Whitecaps were one
win away from hoisting the championship trophy.

Game 2, Bourne at Brewster
Whitecaps 10, Braves 6

Now the momentum seemed to be in Brewster’s favor.
They had won three in a row and were playing at home
with the largest crowd in Stony Brook Field history
cheering them on – more than 5,000. It was a beautiful
sunny summer day, just right for a Whitecaps sweep.

Trouble was, Bourne had a different script in mind. In the Prosecky slams the
very first inning, they looked like the Bourne Braves that door on Bourne
had been the scourge of the league for most of the season,
as they plated five fast runs.

That quieted the home town crowd briefly. But Zach Neto (Campbell), who had gone home with an injury,
then rejoined the team for the playoffs, got the Whitecaps back in the game with a two-run homer.

While Whitecaps starting pitcher Chris McElvain (Vanderbilt) could easily have been unnerved by the
pounding he took in the first inning, he instead settled down to hold the Braves scoreless for the next several
innings while the Whitecaps chipped away at their lead. By the fifth inning, the home team had taken the lead
6-5, thanks to the bats of Chris Lanzilli, Wake Forest), Jake Thompson (Oklahoma State), Chad Castillo (Cal
Baptist) and Kurtis Byrne (TCU).

But the Braves, showing no quit, tied it up in the sixth. In the seventh, Bourne got the first two men on base.
But Brennan Oxford (Wake Forest) came in from the Whitecaps bullpen and got the three outs Brewster needed.

In the home half of the seventh, Tony Bulllard (Arizona) led off
with a shot into the trees beyond left field for the Whitecaps
seventh run, which proved to be all they needed. But just to make
sure, Brewster added three more, two on a double by Spencer
Jones (Vanderbilt).

McGraw saves Brewster Coach Jamie Shevchik must have felt closing out the first
the finale three games of the playoffs was all he could ask of Dale Stanavich.
So he turned to his Game 2 starter against Harwich, Teddy
McGraw (Wake Forest), to nail down the win and the season for
Brewster. McGraw used his 99 MPH fast ball to do just that in
short order.

It’s hard to say whether this championship was sweeter than 2017’s. But as Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh in the
film, Bull Durham, famously exclaimed, “I LOVE winning. It’s better than losing.”

Field Update: Playing it Safe

The Whitecaps, in partnership with the Brewster School Committee, continue to make upgrades at our beloved
Stony Brook Field. This year, you’ll notice the addition of chain link safety fence from each dugout all the way
to the bullpens down both the left and right field lines – plus 15-foot high netting on top of the fence. This
provides additional and welcome protection for our fans.

Whitecaps Board member

as the Club’s project manager
for these impressive field
upgrades. Many thanks to
Chuck for his long hours of
