Thank you Brewster
Baptist Church!
Normally, the new baseball season is ushered in with the entire Whitecaps family gathering
for our Opening Dinner. Players, host
families and interns are introduced,
and we hear remarks from our
President, GM and Manager. For as
long as anyone can remember, this
important and fun event has been
held in the fellowship hall at
Brewster Baptist Church.
Unfortunately, the dinner cannot
be held indoors in 2022 due to
COVID caution. Nevertheless, many
thanks to Doug Scalise, BBC Head
Pastor and his church for normally
providing the venue to help us kick
off the Cape Cod Baseball League
season in Brewster. Hope to make
it happen again next year!

High on the Host Family Experience
By Christopher Price
To witness the scene was to see pure joy,
filtered through the lens of Cape League
baseball.
After the Whitecaps completed their
dream season with a final playoff victory
over Bourne last August, Nancy Sveden,
longtime Brewster Whitecaps host
parent, was on the field. She was holding
the Cape Cod Baseball League
championship trophy, flanked by the two
players — Pete Hansen and Trey Faltine
— who stayed with her last summer.
Keeping the Faith
To be sure, not every season ends with joy and happiness and smiles and a chance at a photo opportunity on
the field with the championship trophy. But for host parents like Sveden, who has had players stay with her
since 2016, it was a reward for being able to keep the faith through the sad, baseball-free summer of 2020.
“Perfection. I look at the pictures and it’s just, just … exultation,” said Sveden of the memories from that
memorable August afternoon and the celebration on the field at Stony Brook School after the last out.
Everyone knows the league is a showcase for the
best college talent in the nation, an opportunity for
players to take a major step forward on a journey
that, for some, ends in the big leagues. In Brewster,
that means getting a chance to play for someone like
Jamie Shevchik, who has led Brewster to two of the
last four Cape League titles, a head coach who
Sveden says “makes you proud” to be associated
with the Whitecaps.
But while Shevchik and the Brewster brain trust
enter 2022 with an eye toward back-to-back titles,
Sveden and the rest of the host parents will provide
the sort of foundation needed for the franchise to
continue to achieve success away from the diamond.
Volunteers: Life Blood of the Cape League
Of course, there are people like Sveden in all 10 towns of the Cape League, people who love the league and the
games and the teams all the way down deep in their bones. The simple truth is that the Cape League wouldn’t
exist without people like Sveden. The host parents and volunteers and others who give their time and efforts
are the ones who keep the whole enterprise moving, year after year.
Like every Cape League team, the Whitecaps welcome any and all volunteers to fill a myriad of responsibilities,
including those who want to serve as a host parent. Players who arrive on the Cape are placed with host
families in each one of the 10 communities. In Brewster, Sveden is one of many who open their homes every
summer to players from all over the country, offering extra rooms for a couple of weeks to a temporary player
or a couple of months to a permanent player. It’s an absolutely vital part of the program, and a terrific way for a
60
community-minded individual to play a sizable role in the
success of the Whitecaps.
Host Family Expectations
Sveden acknowledges that being a host parent isn’t for
everyone. Some may bring the wrong expectations; families
are not getting a ready-made babysitter for the summer. And
it’s important to note every host parent/player relationship
doesn’t always click. You have to be OK with the idea that
the players’ rooms will be occasionally … unkempt. You will
wake to the washer and dryer going … at 1 o’clock in the
morning. That gallon of milk you just purchased at
Cumberland Farms that would usually last a week could
mysteriously disappear in a few hours.
But the payoff? It’s a friendship that extends beyond the
game of baseball.
“You get to know these incredible human beings, something
you wouldn’t do otherwise,” said Sveden. “Getting to know
these kids, these amazing kids … I just feel so incredibly blessed to be able to serve as a host.”
Sveden, a widower, has hosted nine players over the years. It’s a role that can go beyond simply offering an
extra room; Sveden has had lengthy conversations with players about everything from the pressures of big-time
college baseball to what life was like with a rotary phone.
“Sometimes, it’s just good to be an ear for them,” she said. “In a lot of cases, they can be so innocent and so
unworldly, because they have focused on their sport for such a long time to the exclusion of almost everything
else. It’s easy to forget that.”
Relationships that Last
Many Cape League host families continue to stay in touch with the players who spend the summer with them.
Phone calls, zoom sessions, e-mails, and letters are one way to keep the friendships alive. Some families take
trips to see their former house guests play at the college or professional levels.
In the end, regardless of how the season ends — with the unbridled joy of a championship celebration or
otherwise — the relationships forged over the course of a few weeks in the summer are what keep her coming
back time and again as a host parent.
“Your insides just fall out when they leave,” she said. “The emptiness is
palpable. Maybe there’s some relief, knowing everyone is just ready for the
next stage.
“But just to be a part of that for a summer, to see that joy and be a part of
the Whitecaps community is just … it’s so worth it.”

Give us
a hand
with
baseballs?
The home team provides the baseballs for every home game each season,
not to mention playoffs. On average, the Whitecaps go through three
to four dozen balls every game at a cost of about $150. If you can sponsor the
baseballs for one or more games, it will be a very big help. Please sign up at the
souvenir stand or call Bob Graczewski, President, at 413 237-5020. Thank you.

Growing Pros for 34 Years
The Brewster Whitecaps have had many players who have gone on to play professionally.
Here’s the list of Brewster alumni who played on Major League teams at some point in the 2021 season.
Many more are honing their skills in the Minors, still hoping to punch their ticket to The Show.
Others have played in the Majors and retired, or are not active at this time.
Remember: every time you watch a Cape League game, you’re seeing an average
of six future Major Leaguers in action. Part of the fun is guessing which ones!
