Temp PlayersThe Whitecaps roster on page 5 presents the team’s “full contract” players, most of whom signed up months ago to play here for the whole season. But the Cape League season starts before many of them can be here, due to continuing obligations to their college teams. That’s why Brewster, like every other team in the league, recruits “temporary” players who stayon the roster until the contract guys arrive. So you’ll likely see some of the players listed here in uniform for the Whitecaps early in the season. A few may end up playing the whole season, time will tell.As you can see, being a “temp” is an iffy proposition, not to mention a bit of a revolving door for our host families. The Whitecaps salute these players and their host families, who make it possible for Brewster to field a competitve team for the entire season.Trevor Austin 2B Ryan Birchard P Ivan Brethowr OF Julian Brock C Vincent Cimini SS Pete Ciuffreda OF Ian Cooke P Ernie Day P Joey DeChiaro P Weston Eberly C Samuel Garcia P Ben Gorski P Dylan Hoy SS Dylan Leach C Brendan Lysik P Jacob Marshall P John‐Biagio Modugno P Tyler Mudd P Davin Pollard P Randy Reyes P Josh Sanders P Kyle Scott P Colby Shade OF Joe Stella C Justin Storm P Brock Tibbitts C Garett Wallace OF Trevor Werner 3B John West PMissouri Columbia ConnecticutCalifornia Santa Barbara Louisiana Lafayette Boston CollegeLafayette Colllege Connecticut CampbellOld Dominion GeorgiaHigh PointRutgers New Brunswick Marist ColllegeMissouri Columbia Texas TechRutgersRutgers New Brunswick Holy CrossAustin PeayCentral Connecticut Texas TechLackawanna College OregonBarrySouthern Mississippi IndianaEast TennesseeTexas A&MBoston CollegeThank you one and all!20Photos by Adelaide Weed

Why Coaches Answerthe Call of the CapeWhitecaps’ happy skipper, Jamie ShevchikPhoto: William F. PomeroyWe know why college players aspire for a chance to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League. It’s the best summer league in the nation and could be an important stepping stone along the path to big-league baseball. But the Cape holds special allure for coaches, too. Sure, the Cape League is a chance to distinguish yourself as a leader, baseball strategist, and personal therapist for 50 or more 19- and 20-year-olds (counting temporary players) with diverse backgrounds and fragile egos. And do it all against the backdrop of a premier vacation paradise.Certainly, a successful coaching run in the Cape League can be an important resume builder for coaches. Several former Cape League coaches have gone on to jobs at the professional level, many working as scouts or in the front office.By Christopher PriceOf course, different coaches measure success in different ways. For Brewster’s Jamie Shevchik, who has now won two league titles in the last five seasons as field manager of the Whitecaps, his approach to coaching on the Cape was first taught to him by longtime Chatham skipper John Schiffner, who explained that baseball can sometimes be secondary.“He took me under his wing early in my time on Cape Cod,” Shevchik said. “He told me more than once that being a Cape League manager is one of the 10 best jobs in the world.”The other nine, of course, are the other nine Cape League teams.Schiffner, who ended his Cape League tenure as the winningest coach in Cape League history, knew what he was talking about. While coaching is a zero-sum proposition that demands on-field success, success isn’t strictly about wins and losses, particularly on Cape Cod. For Shevchik -- as well as other coaches — the sense of community and familial connection are the real keys to success on the Cape, and a lure that keeps elite baseball coaches coming back summer after summer."It’s certainly not about the money. I walk out of there every summer with a couple of bucks in my pocket, sure,” he said with a laugh. “But my family gets to spend eight to 10 weeks every summer two blocks from the beach. Thetradeoff there is unbelievable.“We’re beach people. That’s what we valued about those vacations every summer at the Jersey shore. So when the Cape came about, sure, we knew it was about baseball and being part of the best summer league in the world. But for my family, it was also about the chance to create those family memories. I know my kids and grandkids will talk about those summers on Cape Cod long after I’m no longer in the dugout.”26Coach ShevchikCoach Schiffner

Taking a cue from Schiffner, who told him, “You need to enjoy this as much as the players do” before the Whitecaps won their first title in 2017. Shevchik’s ability to blend the personal fulfillment with on-field professionalism has resulted in an unprecedented run of success and a cultural change for the Brewster organization.“For us to have won two championships since I’ve beenhere, it feels like we’re kind of on the map. And thatfeels really cool, especially in Brewster. If you win achampionship in Harwich or Chatham or Orleans, there’s a feeling like, ‘You’re supposed to win a championship here.’ I don’t know if Brewster used to think like that, but I think we have changed the narrative.“We’ve certainly done that with Division 1 coaches across the country. They know their players will be taken care of in Brewster.”Shevchik and the Whitecaps’ franchise look forward to the 2023 season with a sense of optimism, but the success of the last five seasons under Shevchik and GM Ned Monthie has raised the bar for a Brewster franchise that now expects to consistently compete for championships. It’s quite a difference for a team that didn’t win a single playoff series between 2001 and 2016.Coach LandersCoach SmythAdding another layer of intrigue is the fact that the rest of the league is trying to figure out Brewster’s formula for success. Scott Landers, who served as Brewster’s pitching coach, was named manager in Bourne in 2021. Meanwhile, Ryan Smyth, who was Brewster’s hitting and third-base coach for many years, was hired as Wareham’s manager in November. But Shevchik embraces the challenge of winning with new coaches.“That’s the challenge this year,” Shevchik said. “The guys who are family, who have been with me, they know what the expectation is. They know what’s expected.”In the end, the objective for 2023 is a third championship in six seasons. For his part, Shevchik will go about his business with that singular goal in mind, all while keeping Schiffner’s words of wisdom in the forefront of his mind.“Success to me is my family being on Cape Cod with me for the summer. Success is seeing former assistants Ryan Smyth as the manager in Wareham and Scott Landers coaching in Bourne,” Shevchik said.“Yes, you think about the wins and losses, but at the end of the day, how do I define success? You sit back, knowing your players have a good experience and they leave Brewster as a better person and a better player. That’s what it’s all about.”Christopher Price is an award winning sportswriter, having covered the Boston sports scene for more than 20 years. He currently works for TheBoston Globe, but has also written for ESPN.com, SI.com and Baseball America, as well as The Cape Cod Times, and The Washington Post. An acclaimed author, he’s written several books, including, Bleeding Green: A History of the Hartford Whalers, and Baseball by the Beach: A History of America’s National Pastime on Cape Cod. He and his family have been longtime supporters of the Whitecaps – his son was a batboy for five years.27

Proud To Be An AmericanThe United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) granted American citizenship to more than 700,000 people last year. 27 of them took their final step last July 15 at Stony Brook Field, thanks to the initiative of Whitecaps’ Field Announcer, Chris Lynch. The Brewster site was approved by the USCIS as the site of an Oath Ceremony, welcoming 27 committed men and women to American citizenship, including several currently serving in the US Armed Forces.“The individuals come from a truly global range of 17 different nations, such as Bulgaria, Jamaica, India, Russia and Nigeria. Each had to complete the USCIS 10 Steps to Citizenship, including passing English and civics tests,” said Lynch.Whitecaps Field Announcer Chris Lynch, right, confirms the event’s agenda with Mark Gildea, Chief Justice of the Barnstable County Superior Court, left, and Denis Riordan of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Office in Boston. After taking the Oath of Allegiance, all 27 received their Certificates of Naturalization. This was a first for the Whitecaps as well as the entire Cape Cod Baseball League. What more appropriate place to become an American than on the playing field of our National Pastime?Serving their country before it was their country.Congratulations one and all.Proudly holding their Certificates of Citizenship.Swearing their allegiance to our nation.Photos: William F. Ned Monthie - Salute to a Leader2023 marks the 17th and final year for Ned Monthie as the General Manager of the Brewster Whitecaps, by far the longest tenure in the team’s history.Under his steady hand, the Whitecaps have flourished, including three trips to the league championship series in the last five years, two of those resulting in Brewster hoisting the trophy as CCBL Champions. Ned’s performance was recognized recently as the Cape Cod Baseball League’s General Manager of the Year for 2022.Ned accepts his 2022 Manager of the Year Award Photo: William F. PomeroyNed’s volunteer service to the Whitecaps began back when the team played its home games at the Cape Tech High School on Route 124 in Harwich. Ned came aboard as a Game Day worker, manning the “front gate” and greeting fans arriving for the game, using his personal charm to extract donations from just about everyone who crossed his path. When he took on the GM job, there was no playbook detailing the responsibilities of the position. Ned invented his own job description, which over time, evolved into such an effective recipe that other teams’ rookie GMs have sought out his guidance and advice. Ever upbeat and supportive, Ned has been pleased to provide it.Going beyond the call, Ned and his wife, Kathy, have also served as a Host Family for one or more Whitecaps players each season through the years. Kathy is also very active in offering fans souvenirs and other branded merchandise through the Whitecaps Team Store. While Ned’s effective, team-player approach to the GM position will be missed, the good news is that he will continue with the team as a Board member, working as the Team Historian to compile and update a working archive of the Whitecaps experience both on and off the field. The Whitecaps and Brewster fans feel a deep sense of gratitude for Ned Monthie’s longstanding commitment to the Club. Thanks, Ned, for the leadership and the memories.Ned MCs team awards with flair.30

First, we have completely renovated the stone dust warning track surrounding the entire field. It was replaced with 100 cubic yards of new material, laser graded and rolled. The result is a more consistent surface for improved player footingwhen tracking both foul balls, and long outfield drives.Second, we have eliminated the troublesome turf " lip " that has built up over time around the perimeter of the infield skin and can cause dangerous bad hops on ground balls. The process included replacing and re-grading the infield clay and soil. True infield hops should be the standard at Stony Brook Field for years to come. All work was performed by Sports Turf Specialties of Wrentham, famous for their work at both Fenway Park, and Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.Special thanks to: Alton Cole, Project DirectorA new, professional grade warning track takes shape at Stony Brook Field.
