60High on the Host Family ExperienceFor several years Amber Higgins, Hayden Kuhn and their family of four have taken one or more Whitecaps players into their Brewster home each season. Here’s what they have to say about their experience. How did you learn that the host families were needed and what was your decision-making process? As native Cape Codders, we have known about the Cape League forever. We learned about the need for host homes (and were swayed) by our friends: the legendary Sullivan/Carey family; who have served as hosts to Whitecaps players for decades.Which players have you hosted? We have hosted the following players: Robert Broom (Pitcher, Mercer University), Jacob Hennessy (Pitcher, Clemson University), Jimmy Ramsey (Pitcher, University of Kentucky), Kurtis Byrne 2X (Catcher, Texas Christian University), Tyler Dellerman (Utility, University of Charleston West Virginia), Braxton Pearson (Pitcher, Texas Christian University), Zane Morehouse (Pitcher, University of Texas). We have also hosted numerous temporary players throughout our time in the program. What are your fondest memories oftimes spent with players? We love getting to know the players and their respective backgrounds. Getting to learn about their families and communities, while also showing them the Cape Cod way of life, is an immense privilege.Role reversal: Whitecaps catcherand 2022 MVP Kurtis Byrne becomes the fan at Jonah’s Little League game. .What surprised you most about the players? It is always a pleasant surprise to see how wellthese young men engage with our children and how respectful they are of our home. Bonus answer: It is surprising how players from The South are confused and intimidated by the concept of an "outdoor shower"!Did you set any "house rules" for players' behavior? We have basic rules which emphasize safety and respect. We feel it is important to strike a balance between not micromanaging them too much while also keeping them safe.Pitcher Conard “Bobby” Broom gives Arabella a ride, while brother Jonah awaits his turn..
Have any of your players goneon to play professionally? We have had players achieve various levels of success in baseball. However, what is more fulfilling is to see these players continue to grow into adulthood and start families/lives/careers of their own.Have you stayed in touchwith your players? We try to keep in touch with our former players as much as possible—this is made easier through social media. Once you live with us, you are family for life! What advice would youoffer a family thinking about hosting a player?Do it! We tell people all the time it is one of the more fulfilling things you can do on the Cape, especially if you have children. We have forged life- long friendships and expanded our family exponentially by joining the Whitecaps community! In the end, regardless of how theseason ends — with the unbridledjoy of a championship celebration orotherwise — the relationships forgedover the course of a few weeks in the summer are what keep her coming back time and again as a host parent.“Your insides just fall out when they leave,” she said. “The emptiness is palpable. Maybe there’s some relief, knowing everyone is just ready for the next stage.“But just to be a part of that for a summer, to see that joy and be a part of the Whitecaps community is just ... it’s so worth it.”Jonah, Amber, Hayden, Arabella & pitcher Jacob Hennessey..And if you are lucky, the kids get to know how it feels to win. .61

Garden PartyYou may have noticed that Stony Brook Field’s gardens have been “spruced up” lately. That’s due to the leadership of Whitecaps board member Pat Eggers and her all-volunteer crew from the Brewster Garden Club, Stony Brook Pickleballers and other board members of the Whitecaps.BEFORE AFTERThe garden restoration project was also made possible by contributions from: The Garden ClubAgway of Cape CodStony Brook SchoolMany thanks to one and all for helping to make our home field a more beautiful place to watch the Whitecaps play ball. Hope you dig it!64

Give usa handwithbaseballs? The home team provides the baseballs for every home game each season, not to mention playoffs. On average, the Whitecaps go through threeto four dozen balls every game at a cost of about $150. If you can sponsor the baseballs for one or more games, it will be a very big help. Please sign up at the souvenir stand or call Bob Graczewski, President, at 413 237-5020. Thank you.68

Growing Pros for 35 YearsThe Brewster Whitecaps have had many players who have gone on to play professionally. Here’s the list of Brewster alumni who played on Major League teams at some point in the 2022 season. Many more are honing their skills in the Minors, still hoping to punch their ticket to The Show. Others have played in the Majors and retired, or are not active at this time.Remember: every time you watch a Cape League game, you’re seeing an average of six future Major Leaguers in action. Part of the fun is guessing which ones!PLAYER (PITCHERS)2022 MAJOR LEAGUE TEAMWITH BREWSTERScott Alexander Luke BardJT ChargoisReid Detmers Ryan FeltnerKyle Hendricks Michael Lorenzen Zac LowtherSan FranciscoNew York, Tampa Bay Tampa BayLos AngelesColoradoChicagoLos Angeles BaltimoreLos AngelesTexasOaklandClevelandColoradoSeattleSt. LouisAtlanta, Minnesota Baltimore,Washington Arizona, Kansas City2009201020112018201620102012201620112015201220162015201120182009 2011/2012 2012Jack Mayfield Tyson MillerSam MollKonnor Pilkington Jordan Sheffield Drew Steckenrider Zack Thompson Tyler Thornburg Austin VothLuke WeaverPLAYER (POSITION)2022 MAJOR LEAGUE TEAMWITH BREWSTERJon BertiMark Canha Yasmani Grandal Aaron Judge Michael Massey Jack Mayfield Jeff McNeil Brent Rooker Nick SenzelWill Smith Travis Swaggerty LaMonte Wade Steele WalkerEli WhiteMiamiNew York (NL) ChicagoNew York (AL) Kansas CityLos AngelesNew York (NL) Kansas City,San Diego CincinnatiLos Angeles PittsburghSan FranciscoTexasTexas20102009200820122018201120122015201520152017201420172015Reid Detmers Kyle Hendricks Michael Massey Nick Senzel Los Angeles Chicago Kansas City Cincinnati70
