Welcome Back to
Stony Brook Field and
Brewster Whitecaps Baseball!

Message from the President

It really is great to be back!

The Brewster Whitecaps coaches, players, interns and staff are thrilled to welcome
fans to the recently renovated Stony Brook Field for the 2021 season. We hope you
enjoy the improved walkways, bleachers and landscaping that were recently
completed.

While the Whitecaps didn’t play in 2020 due to the pandemic, rest assured that we

have been busy preparing for a great 2021 season. As a first-year President, it has

been my pleasure to work with a dedicated Board of Directors and volunteers who

work so diligently to bring you outstanding summer baseball played by top

collegiate players. Bob Graczewski, President
Brewster Baseball Club

Brewster is one of only ten towns on Cape Cod lucky enough to host the best collegiate baseball talent from across the

country. Please browse through this yearbook to learn more about the people who really make this all happen – host

families, coaches, interns and volunteers.

The Whitecaps are a nonprofit organization and rely on the generosity of our local community, summer visitors and
businesses to fund our budget of over $160,000. If you’d like to help, visit our website at brewsterwhitecaps.com to find
opportunities to get involved.

I’d like to thank my predecessor, Chris Kenney, for his outstanding leadership over the past six years. Chris is still with
us and can usually be found during games at the souvenir stand.

Thanks so much for coming out to support the Whitecaps. Submarine duty.

and 96 strikeouts in 57.2 innings pitched. In high school he was

Temp Players

The Whitecaps roster on page 5 presents the team’s “full contract” players, most of whom
signed up months ago to play here for the whole season. But the Cape League season starts

before many of them can be here, due to continuing obligations to their college teams.

That’s why Brewster, like every other team in the league, recruits “temporary” players who stay
on the roster until the contract guys arrive. So you’ll likely see some of the players listed here in uniform

for the Whitecaps early in the season. A few may end up playing the whole season, time will tell.

As you can see, being a “temp” is an iffy proposition, not to mention a bit of a revolving
door forour host families. The Whitecaps salute these players and their host families,
who make it possible for Brewster to field a competitve team for the entire season.

Thank you one and all!

In Memoriam
Head Coach John Altobelli

On January 26, 2020, Coach Altobelli died in the same
California helicopter crash that claimed the life of NBA
great Kobe Bryant. John’s wife, Keri, and daughter, Alyssa,
as well as Bryant’s daughter, Gianna, also perished in the
crash. All of the victims were on their way to a girls’
basketball game where Gianna and Alyssa were to
play on the same team, coached by Bryant. The
two girls were 13 years old, John was 56, Bryant 41.

John’s son, JJ, played one season for the Whitecaps when
his dad was the head coach. He is currently a scout for the
Boston Red Sox.

John was the acclaimed head baseball coach at Orange
Coast College in Costa Mesa, California for 27 seasons.
He led the Pirates to four California state junior college
titles and in 2019 was named National Coach of the Year
by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

He raised $3 million to transform OCC’s baseball facilities

to a quality that matches many of the better facilities in

Photo: Sports Pix four-‐year university baseball. Today his signature and

uniform No. 14 are painted onto the OCC playing field.

OCC plans to honor Altobelli further by naming the field and stadium for him. That will happen

when COVID-19 subsides enough so fans can fill the stands, as they did at the first OCC game

after his death.

“Coach Alto” was the Brewster Uniform number and signature
head coach 2012 – 2014 where he, honor Coach John Altobelli
coached present day major league at Orange Coast College
players such as Aaron Judge and
Jeff McNeil. John made many
friends in Brewster, all of whom
mourn his loss. The Altobellis
were part of the Brewster
Baseball Family and will be
fondly remembered always.

Tribute to
Mike Margotta

Michael Margotta of Brewster passed away on April 6, 2020 after a long
and courageous battle with cancer. He was 61. Mike was in the
construction business. He moved to the Cape in 1982 and worked for
various local builders until staring his own company in 2006. He loved
all sports. His company sponsored Lower Cape Pop Warner Football.
He was involved with and a proud sponsor of the Nauset Booster Club.
He was also a member of the Cape Cod Ski Club and involved with the
Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was extremely proud of his two sons who made Eagle Scout.

Mike and his wife, Katie, began hosting Whitecaps players in 1999. Three years later, Mike became a
Board member. He was a director until 2013, serving as the Club’s vice president in 2005. When the
Whitecaps moved to Stony Brook field and needed a press box, Mike took the reins and, using his
construction expertise and connections, got the job done. He noticed the new foul poles at Stony
Brook each had a flag staff, but no flags. At the next Board meeting, Mike showed up with two
beautiful, custom made foul pole flags, each bearing the Whitecaps logo.

Thank you, Mike, for lending your good judgment, strong opinions, hard work and kind heart to the
cause of the Brewster Whitecaps.

Let’s Play It Safe!

For the safety of all fans, do not interfere with the progress of the game or go
onto the playing field at any time. Any fan interfering with a ball in play or going

onto the field will be removed from the park and could be subject to arrest.

All fans, especially those sitting along foul lines are cautioned to stay
alert for hard-hit foul balls or bats that might leave the field of play.
Fans with young children or who may not want to continously be alert
should sit behind the fenced/screened areas. All fans assume all risks and
dangers incidental to the game of baseball, whether occurring prior to,
during or subsequent to the actual playing of the game. The participating teams,
organizations and players are not liable for injuries resulting from such causes.
