Tribute To Pat Ramsay

Patricia (Pat) Ann Ramsay, 88, of Brewster died
Monday, May 11, 2020. Pat was born in Greenfield,
MA and received a BA from Colby College in Maine.
On Cape Cod she met and married the late William
Ramsay. They lived in Brewster on Stony Book Road.

Pat served on the Brewster School Board, chairing
the Board for a time. She also worked for 22 years
as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Cape Cod
Hospital. Pat was an active member of the
Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans.

Her lifelong love of baseball led Pat to the Whitecaps, where she served on the Board of Directors
for many years. Pat hosted players in her home for many summers, but she is probably best
remembered as a fixture in the Whitecaps’ “Snack Shack” food concession stand. Pat ran a tight
ship in that food concession, at times striking fear into the hearts of assigned college interns and
adult volunteers who inadvertently strayed from her time-tested protocols. It was, of course, all
to the benefit of the Whitecaps.

The Brewster Baseball Club will always remember Pat, for her many years of hard work and
plain common sense that helped shape and mold the character of our organization from the start.

Salute to Chris Kenney

Chris Kenney stepped down from his role as president in 2020. He joined
the Whitecaps Board in 2009 and became president in 2016. With Chris at
the helm, the team strengthened its financial health, expanded its media
activities and leveraged its positive presence in the community.
Thanks to his initiative, the Whitecaps became one of only three teams in
the Cape League that regularly cablecasts a number of its home games.
Production values improved to the point that a Whitecaps game was
broadcast live on NESN using the team’s video feed and featuring
Brewster’s media team interns as commentators.
Chris worked to nurture the Team-Town relationship, which in 2020 led to the approval of $425,000
in community preservation funds to improve access, safety and an overall elevated fan experience at
Stony Brook Field. Also on his watch: after a seventeen year drought, the Whitecaps won the Cape
League championship in 2017.
Chris remains a board member and will continue to recruit and supervise the club’s intern media
team, as well as working in the souvenir stand at each Whitecaps home game. He and his wife, Pat,
also plan to continue hosting players as they have done since 2008.
Thank you, Chris, for your leadership, commitment and perseverance.

Thank you Brewster
Baptist Church!

Normally, the new baseball season is ushered in with the entire Whitecaps family gathering
for our Opening Dinner. Players,
host families and interns are
introduced, and we hear remarks
from our President, GM and Head
Coach. For as long as anyone can
remember, this important and fun
event has been held in the fellowship
hall at Brewster Baptist Church.
Unfortunately, the dinner cannot be
held in 2021 due to COVID caution.
Nevertheless, many thanks to Doug
Scalise, BBC Head Pastor and his
church for normally providing the
venue to help us kick off the Cape
Cod Baseball League season in
Brewster. Hope to make it happen
again next year!

Salute to Andy Ferraguto

After several years of dedicated service, Andy Ferraguto
stepped down from the Whitecaps Board of Directors after
the 2019 season. For most of his time with the team, Andy
voiced the public service announcements and sponsor
promotional announcements live via the public address
system at each home game all season long. He always
showed up early, double-checked for correct pronunciations
and was a pleasure to work with. His soft spoken, yet
upbeat tone became a familiar and popular part of the
Whitecaps fan experience at Stony Brook Field.

59

High on the Host Family Experience

What’s it really like to host a Whitecaps
player? Doug Scalise, his wife, Jill, and
their sons, Nathan and Greg, began
hosting players in 2004. They have more
than a few positive memories.

How did you learn that host families The Scalise family
were needed and what was your hosted both Eric Davis
decision-making process? and Adam Warren in 2007.

Doug loves baseball and began attending
Whitecaps games in the late 90’s after we moved to Brewster,
so we learned how important host families are for the Cape League.
However, our younger son was born in 1996 and we felt it best to
wait until he was a little older before we hosted.

Which players have you hosted?

It’s a long list after fifteen years. Some summers we’ve had one player, others we’ve hosted two. A few of the

players we’re still in touch with are Aaron Bates (2005, now an Assistant Hitting Coach for the LA Dodgers),

David Adams (2006, Manager of the NY Yankees

Anthony Ranaudo deals High A Tampa Tarpons), RHP Adam Warren,
for his alma mater. (2007, Yankees), John Barr and Kyle Blair (2009,

both working in business), RHP Jordan Sheffield,

Colorado Rockies, and Marty Costes (2017, in

AA with the Houston Astros organization).

What are your fondest memories
of times spent with players?

We have so many. Watching Aaron Bates win the
Home Run Derby at the 2005 CCBL All Star Game.
Witnessing a phenomenal pitcher’s duel between
Anthony Ranaudo (2010, first round supplemental
pick of the Red Sox) and Marty Barnes of Wareham
that Brewster won 1-0 with Red Sox GM Theo Epstein there to watch Anthony pitch. Enjoying the playoff run to
the championship in 2017, when Marty Costes had key home runs and a season saving catch in the decisive
game.

Off the field, our favorite memories include competitive games of ping pong, fishing for stripers, taking players
to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, learning about their experiences growing up in different parts of the
country, and being amazed at how much some of them can eat!

60

What surprised you the most about the players? Marty wanted to show
his parents the beach.

More of a realization than a surprise. It’s important to
remember that even though the players may be big and
strong, they’re still young. For many, it’s their first time
away from home, and they’re staying with people they’ve
never met before. That could be a little intimidating for any
of us. Many people also have no idea what a rigorous and
demanding schedule these young men have at school.

Did you meet the players’ families?

We’ve met a few of our players’ families. In our experience, if
they live within driving distance of the Cape,
they are more likely to come for a visit. Parents are always
grateful that we’re hosting their son, and we’ve enjoyed
connecting with them as well.

Did you set any “house rules” for players’ behavior?

We treat each player as if he is a member of our family. We tell them that we expect them to abide by the
guidelines of the CCBL and Whitecaps. As a host family our role is not to enforce rules, but to be a supportive,
non-judgmental presence for our players.

Adam Warren and Nathan Have either of your players
Scalise at Yankee Stadium gone on to play the game
professionally?

Many of our players have been
drafted and played at least a
couple years of minor league
baseball. Six have played at least
a few games in the major leagues.
Adam Warren (2007), a right
handed pitcher, has had the
longest major league career, -
2012 to the present.

61

Have you stayed in touch with your players?

In October of 2019, Doug officiated John and Sarah Barr, at whose
at the wedding of John Barr (2009) wedding Doug officiated.
and his wife Sarah in California.
This is the third wedding of one
of our players in which Doug has
been involved. We also have visited
with players as they made their way
up the ladder through the minors or
as we have traveled around the country.
We always enjoy receiving Christmas
cards and seeing our players as they
get married and have children.

Jill Scalise: “Our first player was What advice would you offer a
Andy Hunter, a Minnesota native family thinking about hosting a player?
who personified ‘Minnesota
nice.’Before he left he wrote us a Hosting a player is a wonderful opportunity for people
lovely thank you note in which he at every stage and season of life. For folks with children
said that he hoped he’d been a good at home it’s a lot of fun. Some of our favorite summers
role model for our sons, who were hosting were when our two sons were young, and Nathan
eight and eleven then. He was a was serving as a Bat Boy for the team. Whether you’re
GREAT role model! We’re still in working or retired, have several folks under your roof
touch with Andy and visited him already or live alone, hosting a Whitecap helps keep you
and his family when we were in young and is a wonderful adventure. Each player is unique
Minnesota a couple years ago.” and every season special.

Salute to Pat Nahigian

A decade ago, Pat Nahigian’s husband, Dee, was invited to join the Whitecaps
Board of Directors. Instead, he convinced both his wife and the Whitecaps Board
that Pat was the Nahigian that should be the new Board member. She was elected
in 2011 and faithfully served until her resignation last year.
Pat became the team’s Treasurer in the spring of 2013, the team’s 25th
anniversary season. She served in that capacity until the end of the Whitecaps’
2020 fiscal year. Pat was a key contributor in the Baseball Club’s quest to become
fiscally sound. She oversaw the daily accounting of all business transactions from budget preparation
and monthly reporting to the Board, to our year-end financial accounting. Her command of business
and accounting procedures made a burdensome, but necessary function look effortless, while keeping
everyone informed and on-board with our overall objectives.
Pat will be missed by all Board members, but will always be around at games, cheering on the
Whitecaps she loves. Happily, the Whitecaps will not be without a Nahigian on the Board.
Even as Pat steps down, her husband Dee is now, finally, a Whitecaps Board member.

65

Good Dawgs!

Each spring the Dugout Baseball and
Softball Club, aka the Dugout Dawgs, uses
Stony Brook Field for their games, and in the
process, helps groom and maintain the field,
preparing it for the Cape League season. The

Whitecaps salute Ryan Kinski and his
organization, now in their new, state-of-the-art

facility on Jan Sebastian Drive in Sandwich.
We are pleased to let our field go to the Dawgs!

66

Thank You, Brewster Police!

In normal times, the Brewster Baseball Club holds its monthly
Board of Directors meetings in the state-of-the-art Training Room

at the Brewster Police Facility on Harwich Road (Route 124) in
Brewster. We hope to be back there again soon.
Many thanks, Brewster Police, for sharing
your beautiful home with us!

67

Give us
a hand
with
baseballs?

The home team provides the baseballs for every home game each season,
not to mention playoffs. On average, the Whitecaps go through three

to four dozen balls every game at a cost of about $150. If you can sponsor the
baseballs for one or more games, it will be a very big help. Please sign up at the
souvenir stand or call Bob Graczewski, President, at 413 237-5020. Thank you.

Growing Pros for 33 Years

The Brewster Whitecaps have had many players who have gone on to play professionally. The list of CCBL
alumni who played on Major League teams in the pandemic shortened 2020 season is not available at
press time. However, here's a list of former Brewster players who were on Major League rosters during
2019, at least at some point. Many more are honing their skills in the Minors, still hoping to punch their
ticket to The Show. Others have played in the Majors and retired, or are not active at this time..

Remember: Every time you watch a Cape League game, you’re seeing an average of six
future Major Leaguers in action. Part of the fun is guessing which ones!
