MIKE’S NOTES Mike Isaacson Artistic Director & Executive Producer 11 Welcome to Disney’s The Little Mermaid. We hope you’re ready to be enchanted, because creating this marvelous and melodic fairy tale has sure worked its magic on us. But before we begin, I have one very important and semi-stern warning: Along with perhaps your parents, your grandparents, and, yes, maybe even your children, it is an absolute must that you bring another life-shaping friend—your imagination. We need you to help us create the feel of the waves, the heat of the sun, the freedom of a beach. And when we sing “Under the Sea” we need you to join in as we celebrate infinite beauty and mystery. Adapting Disney’s landmark 1989 animated film to the stage was a delicious challenge. The movie glides effortlessly between two distinct worlds, the one on land, and the one beneath the sea—but how in the world do you do that on a stage? Together, director Marcia Milgrom Dodge (Young Frankenstein, 2016; Buddy, 2015), set designer Michael Schweikardt (Music Man, 2016 and 42nd Street, 2016), costume designer Robin McGee (Aida 2016; Beauty and the Beast, 2015) and choreographer Josh Walden (Buddy, 2015) made many bold and thrilling choices to solve this. But they can’t go it alone. They need you. And so, as we tell this poignant and timeless tale, we want to inspire your imagination. You’re about to experience a heaping assortment of talent—in puppetry, dance, song and video— that we hope will work on your heart and mind, drawing you into the story to help us create this magical world. If I’ve learned anything about creating a fantasy, it’s that the more we dream with the audience, the more powerful the spell. This unspoken collaboration is a force all its own. And it’s one of the main reasons that The Muny has remained “Part of Your World” for generations of St. Louisans. None of our collective flights of fancy would be possible, though, without the incredible support The Muny receives from our subscribers, our donors, the corporate community, and many discreet and generous individuals. Their support is a silent partner in the magic you’ll see tonight. And I want to acknowledge World Wide Technology as our season sponsor for the fourth year in a row. Their generosity is, without overstatement, the air we breathe—and the ocean in which we swim.

We’re here to help.™

ABOUT TONIGHT 19 Munygoers are going to hear a lot of Alan Menken music this summer (he also wrote the score for Newsies, the season’s final offering), so perhaps we should get to know him a little better. Born in New York City in 1959, child prodigy Menken began composing songs before he was nine. Throughout his youth his goal was to become “the next Bob Dylan.” Menken’s priorities changed in the mid-1970s when he gained admittance to the revered BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in Manhattan. He spent the next several years learning theatre craft from esteemed Broadway conductor (and Muny veteran) Lehman Engel. Menken’s breakthrough occurred in 1982 when his off-Broadway musical, Little Shop of Horrors (written in tandem with lyricist Howard Ashman), became the highest-grossing off-Broadway show of all time. The success of Little Shop of Horrors, first onstage and then in the 1986 movie version, prompted the Walt Disney Studios to invite Menken and Ashman to compose the score for The Little Mermaid, a new animated film drawn from Hans Christian Andersen’s 1830s fairy tale. Menken chose to impose a calypso beat on Andersen’s Danish story. Sebastian’s songs (“Kiss the Girl” and the Academy Award-winning “Under the Sea”) were modeled after the Trinidad beat made popular by Harry Belafonte; Ursula’s menacing “Poor Unfortunate Soul’s” was influenced by the darker sound associated with Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. “That song is German cabaret and calypso,” Menken says. Thanks to his theatre training, Menken knew that in order to engage an audience early on, there needs to be an “I want” song that tells the viewer who and what to root for. “There had never really been an ‘I want’ number before in a Disney film,” he later said. But Menken and Ashman chose to introduce Ariel through the revelatory “Part of Your World.” Ironically, the song nearly was cut from the film when it did not test well at an early screening. Released in 1989, The Little Mermaid became an enormous hit for Disney. The fledgling songwriting team of Menken and Ashman moved right on to their next animated movie, Beauty and the Beast (1991) – and the rest is history. Perhaps because Menken’s musical roots were planted in live theatre, his animated films for Disney have transferred to the Broadway stage with relative ease. First, Beauty and the Beast in 1994, followed by The Little Mermaid (2008), Newsies the Musical (2012) and Aladdin (2014). Today, 19 Academy Award nominations (and eight Oscar wins) later, Menken is revered as one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. His songs are cherished by children and adults around the world. In Forest Park alone, since 1990 there have been eight Muny stagings of Alan Menken musicals – which is not bad for a guy who never did get to be Bob Dylan. – Dennis Brown To read more aboout Hans Christian Andersen and“The Little Mermaid,” go to “Dennis Br Blog” on the Muny website at muny.org.
