Y.Bhg. DEPARTMENT OF ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING PROGRAMMES OF EXCELLENCE Head : Assistant : Puteri Nadia Megat Ahmed Tahwil Muhammad Fadzli Abdul Latiff Coordinator : Rosnah Sulaiman
Department of Additional Supporting Programmes of Excellence www.sribestari.edu.my DASPE was first introduced at the end of 2020 in line with SBPS’s ambition to become a high-performing school. This department was created to give more focus on extra excellence to students that they would not get from other schools. DASPE contains several subdivisions including Sport Excellence, IBSE & STEM and Student Exchange Programme. SPORTS EXCELLENCE Sports Excellence aims to unearth new talents in the field of sports among students to be highlighted and further help the students reach the highest level in sports. Among the sports that are focused is Athletic where we have teachers who are experienced in this field. We also collaborate with the NJAC athletics club based in Johor for excellence in athletics. This is one of the strengths of the athletic athletes in Sri Bestari Private School where they get exposure from professional coaches and athletes. Apart from improving student achievement in sports, the department also helps teachers to improve their sports knowledge especially in terms of the basic components of health-based physical fitness. This is important to enable teachers to train students in the right ways and techniques starting from the school sports level next to take the students to a higher level. One of the new programs created in 2023 is a football project called Harimau Bestari. This team is under the management of coach Kee who is experienced in coaching football in Kuala Lumpur and has led his team to win the championship title. The Harimau Bestari team trains every week throughout the year and has entered competitions around Selangor. The Harimau Bestari team has won two tournaments for the year 2023, namely the Malaysian Cup 2023 by JuniorX and the Coch Nava-Kee Football Tournament 2023. STEM STEM, ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ) in education, is a National level aspiration included in “ Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia 2013-2025 (PPPM 2013-2025)”. SBPSKL has a long term vision to create and produce students who are well educated in Science and Technology. SBPSKL as a leader in education made the first step in July 2019 to introduce INTRODUCTORY SMLabTM STEM PROGRAMME in collaboration with Infonique Sdn. Bhd. The syllabus covers areas of Basic Robotic, Programming, Coding and Pneumatics. In 2023 the programmes has been extended to SMLab Grade 1 and SMlab Grade 3 and will be further extended for new recruitments in 2024 onwards. In 2020 SBPSKL has taken a bold decision to implement STEM-CS subject which was made compulsory for all students from Primary 1 to Form 5 to learn 1 hour a week of basic STEM covering assembly of 3D blocks, MBlock programming, coding, Electrical and electronics, wiring and Autocad drawing and 3D printing. SBPSKL hopes to further explore on various opportunities to equip the teachers and students with latest knowledge and technology by taking parts in trainings, courses, workshops and competitions: local and international. 110
www.sribestari.edu.my Student Exchange Programmes at SBPSKL SBPSKL’ Student Exchange Programmes was established through the cooperation with partner schools/universities from around the world. This programme aims to draw in more students to study at SBPSKL and, at the same time, broaden the international experience for SBPSKL students. We constantly encourage our students to take part in various international student exchange programme to open themselves to a world of opportunity, as this programme is indeed an eye-opening experience. Many students do not travel overseas until later in their studies, hence by participating in student exchange programme, they will have an educational advantage. Moreover, students develop themselves through exchange programmes, allowing them to contribute to society at a young age in a rapidly changing, interdependent world. Additionally, learning about a new culture entails learning more about one's own culture and self. Students will become more extroverted, confident, adaptive, autonomous, flexible, and open-minded as a result of these. This experience will leave the students with new knowledge, cultural understanding, aside from having lifelong friends. As for the teachers, it is hoped that the programme will enrich the sharing of experiences in pedagogy, out-of-classroom experiences, as well as innovative strategies for teaching and learning. Our exchange programmes are varied in length and objective; ranging from 3 months-long exchanges to 1-day programme, with all interested candidates being screened and reviewed competently by our exchange programme committees before they took part in any student exchange programmes. On a side note, “3 months International Exchange Programme” was established in year 2019 under our new collaboration with Tokai Fukuoka High School, Japan, which is an extended effort between the two schools after 10 years of exchange programme collaboration. To name a few, we had received and welcomed international exchange programme participants from: - Akashi Juku, Gunma, Japan (3rd year of exchange programme collaboration) - Aichi University Tokyo, Japan - Kaennakhon Witthayalai Secondary School, Thailand - St. Paul’s School (Lam Tin), Kowloon, Hong Kong - Tokai Fukuoka High School, Japan (10th years collaboration – inbound and outbpund) - Budi Mulia High School, Jakarta, Indonesia visit on 27 September 2023 DEPARTMENT OF ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING PROGRAMMES OF EXCELLENCE 111
www.sribestari.edu.my From July 20th to July 26th, 2023, our school hosted the Tokai Exchange Programme (Inbound). We were thrilled to welcome 11 students and 2 teachers from Tokai, Japan on July 20th. A welcoming ceremony was held on July 21st from 7:50 am to 8:50 am to honour our guests. Tokai students and the exchange program committee gathered at the exam hall for a session on Malaysian Traditional Arts. They were introduced to Batik - a textile art and cultural symbol of Malaysia. Tokai students also participated in a Malaysian kitchen session. They had the opportunity to prepare authentic Malaysian dishes with the committee, and it was both a delicious and enlightening experience for all involved. They also took a day trip to Kuala Gandah, Pahang and were introduced to several traditional Malaysian games, including Congkak, Batu Seremban and Teng-Teng. Prior to the games, the Tokai students spent time in their respective classrooms with their buddies, immersing themselves in the Malaysian classroom experience. The excitement continued after lunch, with all participants taking part in a treasure hunt organized at Ativo Plaza after school. The 9th Exchange Programme between Sri Bestari Private School Kuala Lumpur (SBPSKL), Malaysia and Tokai Fukuoka High School, Japan was held from 16 to 23 November 2023. The programme involved 12 students and 3 teachers. The aim of the programme was to foster friendship, mutual understanding, and intercultural learning among the students and teachers. The 9th Exchange Programme between SBPSKL and Tokai Fukuoka High School was a memorable and meaningful experience for all who participated. We gained a lot of knowledge, skills, and values from the programme, such as intercultural communication, friendship, and respect. We also had a lot of fun and enjoyment from the programme, such as visiting new places, meeting new people, and trying new things. We are very grateful to the school management, our parents, teachers, host families, and students from both schools who made this programme possible and successful. We hope that the existing and new potential Exchange programmes will continue to foster international understanding and promote cultural exchange for years to come.
