Tellthestory of Matthew 21:1-11 inyour ownwords. Youmight wanttoreadthe text and elaborate on it.
Some points to include are:

Jesus are His disciples were traveling toward Jerusalem. Jesus knew what would happen (he would die) in
Jerusalem and was heading there with full resolve because this was why He had come to earth in the first
place.
Jesus sent His disciples ahead of Him to get a donkey and a donkey colt (baby) and bring them toHim.
All of this happened to fulfill a prophesy about the messiah…. read verse 5 & Zechariah 9:9. Jesus was
reminding them that their Promised King would come to themonadonkey.HewasteachingHisdisciplesand
thepeoplearoundHimthat He was the King, He was the Messiah, He was the One they were waiting for to

Asyouread Matthew 21:6-11 havethekidsinthegroupactlikepeopleinthe crowd and imagine Jesus
coming riding into town on a donkey.
Then read Psalm 118:25-29. Look back at what the people were saying to Jesus in
Matthew 21:9 and notice that the people were basically quoting these verses. Explain that the word
“Hosanna”basicallymeans,Lordrescueusorlordsave us.

On the surface, it would seem that the people were beginning to understand who Jesus
isand were worshipping Him as theirrightful king, but if youreadon inthe nextfew chaptersofMatthewyou’llsee

In our story, it seemed like the people were beginning to understand who Jesus is and that they were crying out to
Him for salvation. But, Jesus knew that the same voices who criedtoHiminworshiponthisdaywouldonlyafew
dayslatercryoutforHimtobe crucified. You see, Jesus wasn’t who the people thought they needed. They thought
they neededanearthly king andanearthlyrescue,butreallythey neededsomuchmore.
Theyneededthesamethingthatweallneed.TheyneededtheMessiahtosavethem frompunishmentanddeath.
They needed the Messiah to rescue them from their sin and restore the broken relationship between them and
God. Allofus needto do what the people on the road to Jerusalem did that day. We all need to cry out “Hosanna” ~
Lord Saves Us! But we need to cry out for salvation from Jesus knowing that He is the only way to be saved and that
His salvation is forever. In John 14:6, Jesus said that He is ‘theway, thetruthandthelife’ andthat‘noonecomesto
theFatherexceptthrough Him.’ Now that’s real salvation.

IntroducethestoryfromMatthew4:1-11andtellitinyourownwords.Someofthe truths to discussare:

The Bible clearly tells is that Jesus is “God with us.” He is Immanuel. He came to earthandlivedasamantodie
and take the punishment for our sin.
Before starting His earthly ministry, Jesus was baptized and right after being baptized, Jesus was led out into the
wilderness to be tempted. As a man Jesus was temptedtosinjustlikeweare, butwhatwe’llseeisthatHis
responseisvery different to our response to sin.
Hefasted(didn’teatanything)for40daysand40nightsandwashungryandthen Satan came and tempted
Him.
First, Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread. Obviously the One who spoke the world into being has the
power to do that, but instead Jesus responded by sayingthat‘mandoesn’tliveonbreadalone, butonevery
word that comes from the mouth of God.‘ There was no one that Jesus was going to obey Satan to meet a
physical need.
Second, Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the temple and quoted from Psalm 91 encouraging Jesus
to throw Himself off the temple because the angels would protect Him. Satan wanted Jesus to prove that He
was the Son of God by doing this. Jesus again responded with scripture by saying that the Bible also says, ‘do
not put the Lord your God to the test.’
Still Satan didn’t give up. Finally, he tempted Jesus to bow down and worship him and told him that he would
give Jesus all of the splendor of the world if he worshipped him. Again Jesus responded with Scripture and said,
‘away from me Satan.Foritiswritten,worshiptheLordyourGodandserveHimonly.‘
Jesus did not give into temptation. Jesus did not sin. Jesus lived a perfect life so that Hecoulddieastheperfect

RIGHTEOUS = ALWAYS RIGHT, ALWAYS DOES WHAT IS RIGHT

EXPLAIN: In this lesson, we’re talking about the truth that God is Righteous. The word righteous has acluetoit’s
definition right in the word. When we say that God is righteous wearesayingthatHeisalwaysandonlyright. He
cannot be or do wrong and there is nothing that is right apart from Him. Ask the class how they saw God’s
righteousness displayed in the story they just heard. Explain that righteousness isone of those attributesof

thumbs up and then move your hand with thumbs up in a big circle, like you’re saying right/ good

SAY: “Our key verse for the week is Psalm 71:19 which speaks of God’s righteousness.” Then, work together as a
grouptomakeupmotionsfortheverseandusethemotionsto remembertheverse.Saytheversetogetherwith

CROSS CONNECTION:

In our story today, we saw righteousness in action. We were reminded that Jesus came toearthasamanandthat
He was tempted to sin and yet He never did. We were also reminded that we are just the opposite. We are
unrighteous.Everythingwedoapart from Jesus is sinful and there is nothing right about it. The Bible is really clear in
telling us thatweareallsinnersandthatthereisnothingwecandoonourowntorescue ourselves fromthis life
(Romans 3:10-12 & 23, 6:23, 5:8, Ephesians 2:8-9, etc.).
Thankfully,thestorydoesendthereandwe’realsotoldhowwecanescapefromour unrighteousness and Jesus is
the only way (John 14:6). The truth we need to remember is this – Jesus came to earth, He lived a perfect and sinless
life, He died on the cross to pay foroursin(notHis),HeroseagainandnowwecanlivewithHimifwebelievethatHe
paid the price for our sin. And, all people who believe in Jesus will be clothed with His righteousness so that we can
stand before the Holy God. It’s the great exchange. On the cross, Jesus took on our unrighteousness and God’s
righteous punishment for our sin andthengives usHisrighteousness. Nowthat’s worthcelebrating!

God and the WORD are One.
The WORD is Jesus…which we’ll see more clearly in verse 14 (The Word became flesh….).
Jesus didn’t begin when He came to earth. He had been since the beginning. Jesus was part of the creation
of the world…the world was made through Him. Before Jesus came to earth, God sent John the Baptist to tell
the people that Jesus was coming.
Jesus came to earth as a man (verse 14) and He lived (or tabernacled) with His people.
Jesus came from the Father. Jesus came to make the Father known.

Israel Defeats Amalek

[8] Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. [9] So Moses said to Joshua,
“Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top
of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” [10] So Joshua did as Moses told him, and
fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. [11]
Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand,
Amalek prevailed. [12] But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it
under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and
the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. [13]
And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

[14] Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in
the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”
[15] And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD Is My Banner, [16]
saying, “A hand upon the throne of the LORD! The LORD will have war with Amalek
from generation to generation.” (ESV)

IntroducethestoryfromMatthew7:24-27 andtellitinyourownwords.Someofthe truths to discussare:

In Matthew 5-7 we find one of the longest sessions of Jesus‘ teaching recorded in the Bible. This part of
theBibleiscalledtheSermononthe Mount.
Jesus and His disciples were out among people and Jesus had the people sit down and Hetaught them. He
taught about the law and how He came to fulfill the law, He taught about murder and divorce and taking
oathsandprayerandfastingand all kinds ofthings.
Then, Jesus told them a story about 2 builders, and how if you follow Jesus and do whatHesaysyou’llbelike
thewisebuilderinthestory.Thisishowthestorywent. There were 2 builders who went to build houses.
One builder (turns out to be the foolish one), builds his house on sand. His house had no foundation. It
lookedgoodfromtheoutside, butitwasn’tstrongandwasn’t built on anything that would last.
The other builder (turns out he’s the wise one), builds his house on a rock.
Whenthestorm came, the housebuilt onthesand felldownand was destroyed, but the one built on the
rock stayed strong.
In this story, Jesus was teaching us that our lives need to be built on a strong and solid foundation and that He
is that rock. If we build our lives on Jesus, that means thateverythingwedowillbebasedonHim.Hewillbe
our strength.

things and both of them tried not to sin too much, but one of themwasjustdoingthesethingstryingtolook

(Ephesians 2:8-9), we can’t be goodenough (Romans 3:23) and that we needto build our lives on Jesus. Jesus
needs to be the foundation of our lives. We need to trust and believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins.
We need to turn away (repent) from our sin and turn to Jesus as our salvation That’s what it means to build your life
on the rock!

TEACH – TRUTH:

Thismorning we’retalkingaboutthetruththatGodisTruth.Believeitornot,withinthe firstfewpagesoftheBible,
God’s character is called into question as the serpent asks Eve, “DidGodreallysay….” Theserpent accuses God(&
Eve)oflying.WeknowthatGod never lies,in fact He is TRUTH…there is nothingfalse inHim.

Introduce the story by reminding the kids what happened in Genesis 1 & 2. Remind them that God created
everything.Godwasn’tcreated, buthasalwaysbeenandHemade everything simply by speaking it into being.

ReadGenesis1:26-30&Genesis2:7-17.TalkbrieflyabouthowGodmadeAdam&Eve, whatmadeAdam&Eve
differentfromtherestofcreation, whatcommandsGodgaveto Adam& Eve, what they were madeto do, what
they were told not to do, etc.

Read Genesis 3:1-13 and/ or tell the story in your own words highlighting the following points:

Satan came into the garden in the form of a serpent.
Satan lied to the woman and asked about what God had said about the tree in the middleofthegarden.
SatantoldEvethattheywouldn’treallydie.Satantoldthem that God hadlied.
EvebelievedSatan’slie.Shetooksomeofthefruitandateitandgavesomeofitto Adam to eat as well.
They both disobeyed God. This was the first sin.
Whenthey realized whattheyhad gone, theyfeltguilty andashamed. They made some coverings out of
leaves and they hid from God.
God called out to them and asked where they were. (Did God really not know where they were? He is
omniscient…He knows everything. He wanted them to admit what they had done.)
Adamansweredthathewasafraidsohehid.Godaskedhimif hehadeatenfrom the tree.
Adam blamed Eve. Eve blamed the serpent.

DEFINE AND REMEMBER:

Introduce the concept of God being truth by asking the kids to tell you how they know if somethingistrueorfalse.

90
/5

Have one of the kids define the word true and the word false.

Then, briefly talk through the punishments given to Adam, to Eve and to the serpent. LookbackatGenesis 2:17
andask,‘Godsaidtheywoulddieiftheyatefromthetree. Wasdeathpartoftheirpunishment?’Explainthattheir
punishment wasn’t immediate death, but that when they broke God’s law and sinned that death came into the
world. ReadGenesis 3:19 asareminderthattheywoulddie.Theyweremadetoliveforever with God, but now
theywouldworkhard,theywouldhavepainandthentheywoulddie separated fromGod.

Explainthatthetruthofthematteristhatbecauseofsinweallhavethesame punishment.Romans 6:23 tellsus
thatthewagesofsinisdeath….or,theconsequence that we all deserve because of sin is death.

TRUTH = FACT, RELIABLE, NOT FALSE IN ANY WAY

Since motions & actions help kids remember, choose an action for TRUTH. A good motion might be to make a
capital T with yourhands.

MEMORY VERSE:

SAY: “Our memory verse for the week is John 14:6. This verse helps us to see that God is truth.”

Talk briefly about the truth that you see in this verse. Ask, how does Jesus define Himself inthisverse?Heistheway,
HeistheTruthandHeistheLife.Heistheonlywaytothe Father. Not only is God the Father Truth, but Jesus is Truth
and He provides the only way for us to be forgiven of our sin.

Jesus approached Zacchaeus and told him to come out of the tree because He was coming to hishouse.
The people in town couldn’t believe that Jesus was spending time with a sinner. Upon meeting Jesus, Zacchaeus
changed. He told Jesus he would pay back everyone he had stolen money from and would give half of his
stufftothe poor. Jesus responded by saying that He had come to seek and save the lost.

Ask the followingquestions:
(1) Who changed in this story- Jesus or Zacchaeus?
(2) How was Zacchaeus able to change? Did he change on his own, or did Jesus change him?

Explain that the change we see in Zacchaeus’ life is change that’s only possible when God works in our hearts.

was able to be with His people but still be separated from Him because of sin and that later we’ll see how the
separation between God and His people ended through Jesus.

Today we’re talking about the truth that God is With Us. The main way we’ll be talking about this truth is
through a story in the Old Testament that shows how God was both with His people and separate from His
people at the same time – in the tabernacle.

We can read about the tabernacle in Exodus 25-40 and can see that God gave all of the detailsforhowthey
shouldbuildhis“tent”sothatHecouldliveamongthem.

theOld Testament- in the tabernacle and in the temple in Jerusalem, God was with His people, but there was always a
curtain separating God from His people. Then, in John1:14 we read, “The Word (Jesus) became flesh and made Hs

in Jesus we can live with God and know that God is withus.
