Dear sir / madam,

I understand that the Sheffield & District Durgotsab & Cultural Committee will be celebrating their
32nd year of Durga Puja during the month of October followed by other religious events which are
extremely important in the Hindu calendar.
As a result of COVID-19, the past 2 years have been incredibly difficult and challenging, particularly
for hosting such events. After the events were sadly cancelled in 2020 and a reduced sized event
last year, it will be fantastic for the committee to return to the usual joyous occasion to celebrate
Durga Puja in the true grandeur style.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone involved in the planning the best of luck for
what I’m sure will be a very successful and joyous time for everyone.

Dear Friends, Dadas & Didis,

Time has come to celebrate and worship our 34th year of Puja held by SDDCC. This is the time to
get together and forget our sorrows and enjoy with families & friends. Please come and join us in
this celebration.

Our participant’s engagement is the core essence to our success. Please spread the goodwill &
message to all.

Last year after the pandemic, we were able to celebrate puja, Bijoyasammelani & Nababarsha with
all your support. We formed a new Executive Committee along with 4 trustees to reinforce the
organisation with a vigour.

We also welcome Dibyendu Banerjee as our new priest and thank Panchajanya Ghatak & Amit
Banerjee for performing the duties over the last few years.

This year’s celebration will be graced by the Mayor of Barnsley and the Lord Mayor of South
Yorkshire.

We hope this is the mantra on everyone’s lips now but hopefully not just this year but for years to
come.

Dear All,

2022 is a new chapter for all of us as we emerge out of unprecedented times. Whilst the long
shadows of the pandemic are beginning to recede, we take tentative steps forward. With the advent
of “Sarat” season the most important days of the Indian calendar are soon to be upon us. Ma Durga
with her children will soon commence her journey from her abode in Mount Kailash. According to
Bhagwat Purana, the arrival mode of transport for Ma Durga is determined on the day of the week
our “Ma” arrives. This is elephant or “Goj” if this arrival is on a Sunday or Monday, which happens to
be on this occasion and therefore our “Ma” will be arriving on the elephant. Similarly, the departure
is also determined by the day of the week “bisarjan” takes place. For this year this is on the
Wednesday signifying that or “Ma” will depart on the elephant. This is considered to be very
auspicious with both the arrival and departure on “Goj” or the elephant leading to prosperity for all.

As we forge ahead, we look forward to the blessings of our “Ma” and we hope that our pujo at
Barnsley goes from strength to strength and will scale new heights. We aspire to increase the
footfalls to our pujo as people realise that this is the “Barir pujo” that they have been missing when
they left for these shores and that everyone is welcome and be part of the family.

We wish all families a joyous time on the occasion of Durga Pujo.

Every year summer draws to a close amidst a flurry of activities of getting
the kids ready to go back to school. A crazy time when the summer
laziness feels like a distant dream while sorting out uniforms, school
shoes, new lesson routines and after school activities, sports fixtures,
ballet lessons, exam schedules and so much more. It feels like being back
at the starting line again, getting ready for yet another 12-month long
sprint to the finishing line. But while I run around ticking off my to-do list
and making what feels like million trips to Meadowhall (or placing and
receiving the millionth delivery from Amazon, post the pandemic world!),
I keep stealing glances at the sky as it changes from the bright fiery blue
and the dark thundering grey of summer to a calm pastel blue of autumn.
Before the leaves change their colours, this for me is the first perceptible
sign of the change of season. But most importantly, this also heralds for me the arrival of Pujo... the
5 days of the year that I look forward to most. Here there's no kashphool or parar pandal or
Gariahater pujor kenakata ...but there is definitely the shoroter akash. The blue sky and the cumulus
clouds form the perfect backdrop of neel akash ar pyeja tulor moton megh to our bidesher pujo.
Catching this changing sky while I go about my chores, instantly makes me happy, it makes me think
'Ma ashchhen'...

Couple of decades back, when I was a freshly minted migrant from Kolkata, my first ever visit to a
'bidesher pujo' was to Milton Hall. For 25 years of my life, unlike many Bengalis, I had spent every
pujo in Kolkata. The pujo days were filled with pure joy as we pandal hopped with parents and
families as kids and later with friends, sometimes into the early hours of the morning. Coming home
to a sheuli strewn front courtyard at 4 in the morning and smelling the sweet smell of this autumn
flower will always be part of a very special memory of a simpler life. Pujo heralded a month of
freedom, indulgence, joy and most importantly holiday from schoolwork! A time of pure bliss.
Although its nature changed over the years, that anticipation and joy of pujo has always stayed with
me. Hence when a friend offered to take us to the nearest pujo, I jumped at the opportunity. And so,
started the yearly ritual of attending the pujo at Barnsley's Milton Hall. A good few years later, that
spanned a couple of decades, when I look back, I can't really say when this pujo became an integral
part of me, where I forged new friendships that became lifelines for me, where my children came as
infants and toddlers to teens. Where they made friends and identified themselves with the traditions
and customs of this festival. That journey has brought me to this point today where I have the
immense pleasure and privilege to co-edit the pujo magazine.

This patrika has seen a lot of toil and tears. Our first venture as an editorial team, we've tried to bring
to you our vision of a magazine that showcases and celebrates everyone. I am humbled by the
overwhelming support we have received from our friends, far and wide. Writings, drawings,
photographs have poured in with unbelievable generosity. I am especially indebted to my co-editor,
Sinjini (Rimi), who has supported me in every decision and worked tirelessly to bring to life our vision.
It's been a creative adventure and I couldn't have asked for a better partner. I hope you enjoy reading
the magazine as much as we've enjoyed putting it together.

In the end, I wish you happy pujo and a peaceful year ahead.

সানথ েুনজা পেখনে যাওয়া, প্রথম বিু েরু ুেরু ু পথনি শুরু িনর প্রথম েনু জার

প্রথম পযকেে ঋেু প্রস্তাব কেনলা সহ-সম্পােো িরার আকম কিছুকেে োকস্তিযেণূ ণ
রইলাম, োর কিছু সপ্তাহ ের "এ আর এমে কি বযাোর" েবণ চলনলা। "শুধু পলখা
গুনলা হানে পেনলই হনলা" পথনি "উকরবাবা এ কি চাে" অকি সব েথ পেনখ কেলাম।
এখে েনু জা মানেই মে খারাে িরা ভানলা লাগা! পছাট, পমনজা, বন া পবলার সব
স্মৃকে কভ িনর আসা। অনেি কিছু িরনে ো োরার মানেও েনু জার কেেগুনলানে
যেখাকে আেন্দ গুকছনয় কেনে োরা যায়... পছাটনবলায় মনে আনছ েনু জার পিাে
পবলা পিাে জামা েরনবা আর োর সানথ মযাকচং টিে েলু হার এই কেনয় কেনের
ের কেে আনলাচো চলনো বন্ধু নের সানথ… Outfit, accessories িথা গুনলা েখনো আমার
dictionaryপে আনসকে। এখনো প্রায় কেছনের েষৃ ্ঠানেই পিাথাও েন থানি! িানলভনে োনের পেখা পমনল।
আকম েঞ্চমী অকি ভীনের েণ িরোম এবার েুনজানে পবন ানবাই ো। ওসব েু চ্ছ মােবজাকের জেয। আমার
প্রচু র িাজ! ষষ্ঠীনে ঢানি িাঠি ে া পথনি মেটা চঞ্চল হওয়া শুরু, সপ্তমীনে প্রাণ হাাঁকুোঁাকু আর অষ্টমীর অঞ্জকল
কেনয়ই আমায় আর বাক নে োওয়া পযে ো!

ও শুভ িামো। সবাই কেনজর কেনজর পেনি আনরা প্রজ্জ্বকলে হও, কবনেষ িনর আমানের েনরর প্রজন্ম, যারা
এনো সনু ্দর িনর কেনজনেরনি বযক্ত িনরনছা, সকেযই প্রেংসেীয়। এই েথ চলািালীে আকম প্রচু র সাহাযয পেনয়কছ

আর মানয়র োম সপু ্রভা রায়। সেযকজনের জনন্মর কিছুকেনের মনধযই োরঁা বাবা সুকুমার রায় িালাজ্বনর
আক্রান্ত হে। আ াই বছর ধনর কেকে পরানগ পভানগে। েখে িালাজ্বনরর পিাে কচকিৎসা কছল ো। মাি
ছকিে বছর বয়নস ১৯২৩ সানল সুকুমার রানয়র মেৃ ু য হয়।
