From the day we produced our first enamel coated cast iron bathtub as a way to make our products superior, Kohler Clean has been part of our mission. Back then, enamel became the material of choice because of its ability to be wiped clean. Now, besides enameled baths, KOHLER baths come in a range of materials from sanitary grade acrylic that is scratch and mould resistant, to premium grade solid surface acrylic that appears to be finely honed stone and is warm to the touch. 132 KOHLER Tapware & Accessories WasteLAB In 2013, at the company’s annual Innovation for Good event, the idea for the Kohler WasteLAB was conceived. This initiative initially focused attention on its landfill-bound pottery cull – essentially broken pieces from its toiletmaking process – and how it could be re-purposed into something both beautiful and useful. Ann Sacks, visionary tile designer, came on board and together the two brands created the Crackle Collection After the clay is pressed, WasteLAB artisans hand-cut each tile, remove the excess and apply an interactive glaze. The result is a delicate crackle glaze and deep, rich colour in a variety of tile shapes and sizes. Producing Energy Looking to alternate energy sources will help us reach our goal of NetZero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2035. One such source is solar energy. We have facilities all over the world. Our Spartanburg, South Carolina, facility averages 225 days of sunshine each year. More than 4,000 panels produce 1,000 kilowatts of power for the Spartanburg plant. Thanks to the panels, we can reduce the amount of power supplied by our local utility by nine percent. In Beijing, China, nearly 650 solar panels generate 170,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year. Safe Water One-third of the world’s population lives without safe water, a situation Kohler finds totally unacceptable. The company partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Safe Drinking Water Campaign to develop a ceramic water filtration system called Kohler Clarity. Each Clarity unit filters out more than 99% of bacteria and protozoa, providing up to 40 litres of safe water each day – enough clean drinking water for a family of four. Given the incidence of water-borne illnesses can be reduced by 45 per cent through safe drinking water – and safe storage – the Kohler Clarity is a life-changing development. Sustainability Initiatives Waste Equals Opportunity. Kohler announced its Net Zero 2035 policy in 2008 – a commitment to send no solid waste to landfills, reduce water usage each year and offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions, all by the year 2035. The Kohler WasteLAB is currently exploring ways of recycling spent foundry sand, waste glaze and enamel powder and foundry dust that is made up of fine particles of sand, coal, clay, grinding dust and rust. The electricity needs of all of Kohler’s US and Canadian operations will be met by wind farms in Kansas. Known for its open plains and strong winds, Kansas is an ideal location for generating wind energy. We’re also investing in energy-efficient kilns, heat recovery systems, and several solar installations. The Kohler Clarity units are lightweight and easily transportable with low-cost replaceable filters that can clean up to 5000 litres of water. These units have already helped countless numbers of people in many developing countries.

KOHLER is commited to reduce our carbon and solid waste footprint by 3% annually to achieve NET ZERO by 2035. We are also developing innovative energy and water saving products and helping people to take action. Launch of THE BOLD LOOK OF KOHLER, an extensive advertising campaign and array of exciting new products in vivid accent colours. John Michael Kohler, 29, an Austrian immigrant purchased a small local foundry. Originally the foundry manufactured agricultural implements and ornamental iron pieces. Inspired by decorated plumbing basins created by resident artists in the company pottery, KOHLER introduces Artist Editions, a portfolio of surfacedecorated basins that make a striking statement. John Michael Kohler takes a horse trough, heats it up to 925°c, covers it with enamel powder and furnishes it with four legs and ornamental feet, to serve as the first KOHLER bathtub. KOHLER production of innovative enamelware – baths, pedestal basins, toilets, urinals and drinking fountains – begins and soon comprises most of the company’s business. 2005 Purist Hatbox launches With its clean minimalist design, the Purist Hatbox toilet opens the door to a new era of possibilities for making design statements in the home. 2006 Nature’s Chemistry KOHLER’s Nature’s Chemistry basin collection exhibits a craftsman’s skill in the use of glass, stone and bronze, to embrace the raw, elemental qualities of natural materials, resulting in fully functional and visually stunning works of art.
