PERNYATAAN PROFESIONAL PRAKTIKUM – FASA 2

PERNYATAAN SEBELUM PRAKTIKUM

Pada semester ini, saya serta seluruh guru pelatih semester 6 ambilan Jun 2018
akan menghadiri praktikum fasa 2 yang akan berlangsung selama 12 minggu
persekolahan. Sebagai salah seorang guru pelatih di Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus
Gaya, saya wajib menjalani latihan mengajar ataupun praktikum selama 3 bulan yang
bermula pada 28 Julai 2021 hingga 1 Oktober 2021. Praktikum ini adalah untuk subjek
major iaitu Bahasa Inggeris dan juga kokurikulum. Latihan praktikum ini dilaksanakan
sebagai memenuhi syarat yang telah ditetapkan oleh Institut Pendidikan Guru.

Antara perkara yang saya perlu lalui sebelum menjalankan praktikum ini ialah
sesi taklimat bersama unit praktikum. Sesi taklimat ini telah berlangsung melalui platform
Google Meet. Sesi taklimat praktikum ini disampaikan oleh Encik Chai Ming Chan. Untuk
taklimat praktikum kali ini, penekanan adalah berkenaan prosedur perlaksanaan
praktikum peranan dan tanggungjawab pelajar, kehadiran praktikum, wajaran praktikum
dan garis panduan perlaksanaan kokurikulum di sekolah.

Selain itu, antara persediaan penting yang telah saya lakukan sebelum
menjalankan sesi praktikum yang pertama ini adalah membuat persediaan dari segi
mental dan fizikal. Sepanjang tempoh praktikum tersebut, saya dikehendaki untuk
menyiapkan segala tugasan yang telah diberikan oleh Unit Praktikum. Oleh itu, saya
perlu membuat beberapa persediaan sebelum menjalani praktikum tersebut.

Perkara seterusnya yang perlu saya lakukan semasa praktikum ialah mengumpul
maklumat-maklumat yang berkaitan dengan tugasan berpandukan senarai semak yang
telah disediakan oleh unit praktikum. Disamping itu, saya juga perlu menyediakan
portfolio praktikum dan menyimpan segala hasil maklumat yang diperoleh serta hasil
penulisan yang telah dibuat kedalam portfolio sebagai bukti serta rujukan dimasa akan
datang.

Sebagai seorang guru pelatih, bimbingan serta tunjuk ajar dari guru yang
berpengalaman amat penting dalam melatih guru pelatih menjadi guru yang Berjaya.
Sehubungan dengan itu, saya perlu berbincang dan sentiasa meminta tunjuk ajar
dari guru pembimbing saya dari sekolah tersebut. Nasihat serta bimbingan yang
padu amat penting kepada saya sebagai seorang guru praktikal yang baharu di
sekolah tersebut.

Sebelum menjalani praktikum, saya mendapatkan pelbagai tips tentang kaedah
bagaimana mengawal bilik darjah melalui pengalaman dan pengetahuan daripada
guru pembimbing saya. Malah saya juga telah membuat perancangan awal
berkenaan peraturan-peraturan yang perlu mereka patuhi sepanjang sesi pengajaran
dan pembelajaran yang saya jalankan. Selain itu, saya turut merancang aktiviti-
aktiviti pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang menarik minat murid dalam pembelajaran
mereka di dalam bilik darjah. Saya berharap agar praktikum yang akan saya jalani
pada 28 Julai hingga 1 Oktober berjalan dengan baik sepertimana yang telah saya
rancangkan. Walaubagaimanapun, sebagai seorang guru, saya mestilah sentiasa
bersedia dalam menghadapi segala cabaran yang datang.

PERNYATAAN SEMASA PRAKTIKUM

Saya Syarifah Fatin Nabilah telah menjalani latihan praktikum pada semester
enam iaitu praktikum Fasa 2 di Sekolah Kebangsaan St. Agnes, Kota Kinabalu.
Praktikum ini mengambil masa selama tiga bulan (28 Julai – 1 Oktober 2021) dan
saya mesti mengikuti segala aktiviti yang berjalan di sekolah dalam jangka waktu
tersebut.

Antara tujuan sampngan program Praktikum ini adalah untuk membolehkan
pelajar membiasakan diri di sekolah dan di bilik darjah serta mendapat pendedahan
awal pembelajaran murid. Di sekolah juga saya perlu mengajar subjek major saya
iaitu Bahasa Inggeris selama 9 masa dan juga 1 masa bagi aktiviti kokurikulum iaitu
Kelab Bahasa Inggeris. Setelah saya meneliti kandungan tugasan, saya mendapati
kurikulum dan sukatan pelajaran juga menjadi salah satu item penting dalam senarai
semak tugasan. Perkara ini sedikit sebanyak menyumbang kepada pengetahuan
baru saya tentang pembelajaran murid-murid. Antara lain, tugasan yang diberikan
juga membolehkan saya membina kemahiran berinteraksi dengan murid, guru dan
kakitangan sekolah. Kepentingan utama aktiviti ini adalah untuk membina keyakinan
diri seseorang guru pelatih selain daripada mempersiapkan mereka sebagai salah

seorang komuniti sekolah pada masa akan datang. Di samping itu juga, guru pelatih
diharap dapat memahami tingkah laku murid- murid, pengurusan bilik darjah, proses
penyepaduan teori dan amalan dalam konteks pengajaran dan pembelajaran
melalaui pemerhatian, interaksi dan refleksi.

Setelah hampir 10 minggu menjalani latihan praktikum, masih banyak perkara
yang perlu saya perbaiki terutamanya dari aspek penulisan rancangan pengajaran
harian. Berbekalkan panduan dari pensyarah penyelia, guru pembimbing serta
rakan-rakan, saya akan sentiasa cuba sedaya upaya untuk melakukan yang terbaik
dan bersungguhsungguh sepanjang tempoh praktikum ini. Tempoh praktikum yang
berbaki hampir 2 minggu sahaja lagi terasa semakin dekat namun masih banyak lagi
tugasan-tugasan yang belum saya laksanakan. Setiap kali selepas penyeliaan, pasti
saya akan memperolehi ilmu yang baru dan perlu saya perbaiki. Saya juga perlu
bijak menguruskan masa agar dapat menguruskan semua tugasan dengan konsisten.

Sepanjang menjalani latihan praktikum, saya semakin jelas dengan kaedah
dan teknik yang perlu disesuaikan dengan latar belakang murid-murid saya. Aktiviti-
aktiviti yang dilaksanakan juga perlu bersifat dua hala agar saya dapat membentuk
jati diri murid-murid agar berani memberi jawapan mahupun pendapat. Justeru,
dengan perancangan pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang konsisten, saya akan cuba
sedaya upaya untuk melatih mereka menjadi berani untuk mencuba sesuatu yang
baik.

Selain itu, perkara penting yang perlu saya beri tumpuan adalah untuk kuasai
perancangan pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Saya sedar, kebanyakan murid kurang
minat ingin belajar dan merasakan bosan untuk belajar. Prinsip yang cuba saya
tanamkan bagi anak-anak didik saya, saya akan pastikan mereka sentiasa berasa
seronok setiap kali kelas bermula dan mengikuti aktiviti-aktiviti yang dijalankan di
kelas. Pada masa yang sama, mereka dapat menerima input pembelajaran yang
mencukupi. Dalam tempoh praktikum juga, saya sedar bahawa untuk mengajar kita
perlu membuat persediaan yang rapi agar pengajaran dan pembelajaran dapat
dilaksanakan dengan lancar dan mendapat hasil pembelajaran yang eksplisit.

Jelas sekali kejayaan pengajaran dan pembelajaran sesuatu sesi
pembelajaran akan bermula dari guru yang konsisten dengan perjuangannya.
Justeru saya perlu sentiasa mencuba untuk mencari strategi yang menarik agar
mereka bersemangat ketika belajar, saya acap kali mencari bahan bantu mengajar
yang menarik serta logik dan berkaitan dengan isi pelajaran. Apatah lagi dengan
keadaan pada masa kini yang kian berubah keadaan akibat faktor pandemik Covid-
19.

On Monday, 5th July 2021, begins the first week of my practicum conducting
online teaching and learning (PDPR) with 5 Bless. The lesson was conducted
through two platforms which were Telegram Voice Chat and Google Classroom. For
the first class, I let them to introduce themselves by describing their features. The
topic is related to the current unit they are learning which is about using adjectives
and nouns for describing. Pupils were very responsive in the first task even though
not all of them could join the online voice chat for some reasons. Then, they were
directed to another task in Google classroom, so that all pupils could join and submit
their work.

One issue that occurred would be the internet connection on my side. At first,
I was keep getting out from the session and pupils could not hear me very well. I
have to keep repeating myself until it took almost 20 minutes to settle everything
down. Then, I changed to laptop which makes it more better than using a phone.

From this, I realize that I should have prepared backup plan beforehand to
make sure everything went smooth. Plus, I supposed to test out and discover the
platform first as it turns out the voice chat did not have the function to present. One of
my instruction was showing them pictures of famous people and let them to describe
their features. Since I could not present the pictures through that platform, I have to
search for another alternatives right away. I asked them to look at the pictures inside
their textbook instead. However, towards the end I managed to grasp the flow of the
lesson and had pupils to go through the task that I have prepared.

On Tuesday, 6th July 2021, our online English class began at the same time
with yesterday’s class which was at 11.20 a.m. The lessons are fully given through
google class platform. I have provided pupils with a google form link as well as an
introduction video to the topic of Past Simple Questions. From here, pupils are shown
on how to construct past simple questions and practice it by arranging the questions.
Then, pupils are required to do an exercise from their textbook. I have recorded step-
by-step instructions to help them in understanding and answering the questions.

On the other hand, I have also implemented higher order thinking skills
element in the task. The main purpose was to get them generate their own ideas
and opinions as they were analysing the given situation. Pupils were asked to
imagine what questions they would want to ask if they are given the opportunity to
meet the film director. I noticed pupils were capable to come up with interesting
questions by their own.

However, I could see only a few them could understand on how to create past
simple questions. Meanwhile, the rest is still having issues on constructing full
question. I came to realize that pupils need more practices in order for them to fully
master the topic. From this issue, I knew that pupils need more enhancement in the
lesson that involve grammar topic. In light with the participation matter, I should have
improved my approach by including more fun activities and interesting elements such
as game, quiz or song to attract their attention in the lesson.

Based on the previous lesson, I have took a few initiatives to improve the
weaknesses identified after assessing through the task that they have submitted. I
notices that pupils need more practices in order for them to fully understand on how
to construct past simple questions. Therefore, I have decided to revise back on the
topic by providing them more examples, guiding them step-by-step, and also do more
exercises together. Additionally, for today’s lesson, pupils were also taught on how to
answer questions in past simple form. Since, I was focusing on speaking skills, I
have tried to encourage them in speaking activity such as Q&A session between their
peers and interviewing one of their family members. In that way, only pupils get to
use the language effectively.

Thus, after looking back at the process of conducting an online class through
Google Meet, I realized on the need to organize my teaching materials beforehand.
The transition in alternating materials might disturb the pupils’ focus. Some of them
started to talk about other topic to their friend. Therefore, it is important for me to
have a smooth transition during conducting online class.

Overall, it was more easier for me to assess them using the Google Meet
platform since I can directly delivered the instruction towards them and monitor their
understanding by looking at their responses. However, I need to look at other
consideration because utilizing Google Meet might take away more internet data
compare to others. Some of the pupils might be having issues in purchasing internet
data or slow internet connection.

On Thursday, 8th March 2021, our online English Language class began at
8.20 a.m. For this lesson, I have tried implementing a new platform which called as
‘Padlet’. Pupils can write down their thoughts and answer by creating a post. The
post function works similar as a sticky note. I noticed that pupils can express their
idea freely through this platform. Rather than answering with simple answers, they
tried to look at different point of view. Apart from that, since today’s lesson was
focusing on listening skill, I have given pupils a listening audio through watching a
video. Pupils need to complete the dialogue text by choosing the options given. Then,
only pupils can listen to the video to check on their answers.

However, it is still lacking in terms of the participation which mostly can be
seen in the first task compared to the second task. I believed that is because pupils
were still not familiar with the ‘Padlet’ application and they did not know how to utilize
it. Some of them even text me personally, telling that they do not know how and
where to write down their answers. Hence, from this issue, I decided to record a
tutorial video to explain to the pupils step-by-step. I should have done this way earlier
so that pupils can easily conduct the task.

After having several classes with the pupils, I am still in the process of
discovering new ways on how to conduct online classes as well as to attract their
interest. Pupils may get tired or bored along the way in online classes. Therefore, I
think that it is vital for me as a teacher to keep on improving my skills and finding
ways to overcome any intervention during the class.

Our Friday class begins earlier than the rest of the week.. For today’s lesson, on 9th
July 202, I have conducted the class through Google Meet platform. Pupils were
being introduced to the graphic novel of Gulliver’s Travel which falls under the
language art skills. The lesson covered only on the introduction part of the graphic
novel. The main focus was to get pupils learn about the elements on the cover of the
book as well to let them respond to the task imaginatively. I was surprised that quite
a number of them joined the session. I though that there would be fewer pupils
compared to usual since the class started very early in the morning.

In this lesson, a few strengths and weakness have been pointed out by
myself and also the appointed lecturer to observe the class. The set induction part
that I had conducted using the ‘Bamboozle’ application was a success because
pupils responded actively to the activity. The activity required pupils to do a specific
movement that was shown on the screen such as doing jumping jacks, dance like a
robot, and stretch their feet and toes. On the other hand, the downside from my
teaching session would be on the transition and pacing during the Google Meet
session. I was having problem with presenting the tab and sorting out my materials
especially with the extra tools that I was using such as name roulette. It had affected
the lesson since because have to wait a few minutes before I get to them.

Overall, I have learned the importance of organizing my materials before
starting the class. I also had to work on my pacing since it could disrupt the flow of
the lesson. Efficient transitions and having a planned lesson will eventually increase
the time for learning and help to maximise instructional time as well. It can get pupils
to move quickly and efficiently from one activity to another.

WEEK 1

PROBLEM

This is the first week of my practicum phase 2 at Sekolah Kebangsaan St. Agnes,
Likas. A meeting session with the headmaster, Administrative and Curriculum Senior
Assistant, and cooperating teachers had been conducted to report duty on the first
day. My supervising lecturer, Mr. Alvin Auh Min Han, had kindly planned for a social
visit on Friday this week through online platform with us and the cooperating teachers.
The purpose is to discuss important matters that need to be done during the
practicum weeks. The pressure that I felt during the first week was less intense
compare to my first practicum. However, I do still feel worried since we are most
probably will be doing practicum fully online. I feel a strong apprehension in my mind
whenever I come to think about my duty during practicum and the observation that
will be done by my lecturer and my cooperating teacher.

ANALYSIS
The problem may arise due to the lack of mental and physical preparation in facing
all the obstacles to becoming a great teacher. With little experience of teaching in
the classroom, there are few issues which I fear if I am about to teach in the
classroom. One of it would be classroom management. As a teacher trainee,
classroom management could be uncontrollable without good first impression. It is
the ability to control your class in your first lesson through building the quality of your
relationship with the pupils with both positive and respectful relationship. Next,
preparing lesson to adhere the difference of pupils’ learning style. It requires us to
look back at the teaching principles we have learned, read articles, and get to know
the pupils up close so that we can find the best learning materials and tools for them.

LITERATURE REVIEW / PAST EXPERIENCE
Based on my experience during the School-based-experience, I have learned the
importance of setting ground rules as we first step into the classroom. Otherwise,
there will be cases where pupils did not take you seriously or ignore your instruction
during the lesson. We must use a positive approach to eliminate any unwanted
behavior while still providing a non-threatening learning atmosphere for pupils.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned
earlier. First, I must make a proper mental and physical preparation by reading a lot
of materials related to motivation and pedagogical approaches in education. Second,
I need to seek help and support from my supervising lecturer, my cooperating
teacher, the senior teachers or those who are more experienced, to discuss on the
best way to overcome my problems and fears.

FURTHER ACTION
I have to keep observing the pupil's participation and involvement in online learning
before coming to the classroom. I will think of ways to deal with my problems from
time to time. I will always seek guidance and help from my supervising lecturer and
cooperating teacher, both of whom have been tremendously helpful thus far.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
I will need the assistance from my cooperating teacher, supervisor and colleagues to
assess the effectiveness and success of my handling the problem. From the sharing
session between the teachers and extra knowledge I have gained, it somehow calm
my fears down and help me to plan my lesson as well managing classroom’s control.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
This situation has really put my capability and potential to the test. I just want to take
them positively and endure the difficulties with the help of people’s around me. I will
seize every opportunity that permits me to give more focus on the teaching and
learning activity.

WEEK 2

PROBLEM
On Tuesday, 23rd March 2021, begins the first week of my practicum conducting
online teaching and learning (PDPR) with 5 Bless. The lesson is conducted mainly
through three main platforms which are Google Meet, Google Classroom, and
Telegram. The current arising Covid-19 cases had forced millions of students to learn
from home. Prior to that, teachers have to adapt their teaching methods and
materials. My main concern is coming up with a method that could be applied online
since most of the knowledge that I have is about teaching during face-to-face
situations. I have to plan a strategic lesson plan that could let the pupils achieved the
objective as well as making them feel interested to learn the lesson. Thus, I find it
hard to plan out a lesson during online learning with the limitation of tasks that we
have.

ANALYSIS
The difficulties in planning out a lesson during online learning may be due to my lack
of experience and the limitations of the platform that I have. Plus, the lack of ability to
adapt to a new situation. The amount of readings and resources I had for online
classes is also limited. Even though we have been exposed to lots of technological
element in teaching but most of the materials still requires for interaction with pupils
in real life. It has never been imagined to conduct class fully online.

LITERATURE REVIEW / PAST EXPERIENCE
Some studies are talking about the challenge for teachers to find and choose
material in this new situation. According to American English Webinars (2020),
teachers must take into account a number of things, including authenticity, the
original source, the target language skill, and learners’ language levels and ages. All
of those are needed to fit the needs of the learner.
