PORTFOLIO PRAKTIKUM [SYARIFAH FATIN NABILAH]

TESL
PISMP SEM 7 AMBILAN JUN 2018

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned
earlier. First, I must make proper preparation by reading a lot of materials related to
pedagogical approaches in online learning. Plus, join a sharing session where an
experienced teacher could share their ideas and experience in implementing them
with their pupils. I have to be flexible and try to have new perspectives in teaching.
Then, only it allows me to be creative and thinking critically to overcome the current
situation.

FURTHER ACTION
In the preparation of creating a lesson plan that should be able to reach the objective,
I need to be resourceful in planning activities that will suit the curriculum
specifications and the learning objectives within the time stipulated. I will always seek
guidance and help from my supervising lecturer and cooperating teacher.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
I could look up a variety of teaching methods, tools, and platforms on the internet.
There are lots of platforms available out there which can be implemented in online
classes. For example, Bamboozle, Quizwhizzers, and Wordwall. I must be creative in
adapting it to the students' learning abilities and styles. I will need assistance from
my cooperating teacher and colleagues to assess the effectiveness and success of
my handling the problems. I will also need to do some self-assessment to solve these
matters.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
Even though not all pupils get the access to participate in the class, yet it can be
perfectly safe to assume that this strategy had become a success in finding the best
platform for pupils to participate in the class activity. However, I need to look at other
considerations because utilizing certain platforms too much in a week might take
away more internet data compare to others.

WEEK 3

PROBLEM
Week 3 marked my second week conducting online classes for year 5 Bless. Apart
from preparing lesson plans, I also needed to prepare beforehand on the learning
materials such as video presentations, online worksheets, or quiz. I try to figure out a
new platform to be used during online classes. Finding the best materials and
platform for pupils are definitely not an easy task. I have to consider lots of factors.

After every class during the whole week, I realize it was a bit chaotic and
unorganized especially during the meet session. I was having a problem with
presenting the tab and sorting out my materials especially with the extra tools that I
was using such as the name roulette. Simultaneously, it has affected the transitions
between tasks and the whole mood.

ANALYSIS
After figuring out the factors contributing to this issue, I have identified the specific
reason which is due to my less preparation in organizing the materials before the
Meet session. Next, would be on the transition and pacing during the Google Meet
session. Pupils have to wait almost 2-3 minutes to receive the next instructions. It
had affected the lesson because they have to wait a few minutes before I get to them.
During the time, some of them may lose interest in the class and started doing other
activities.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned
earlier. First, I had to sort out my materials according to the procedure of the lesson
plan that I had prepared. I also had to work on my pacing since it could disrupt the
flow of the lesson. Efficient transitions and having a planned lesson will eventually
increase the time for learning and help to maximise instructional time as well. It can
get pupils to move quickly and efficiently from one activity to another.

FURTHER ACTION
From this, I realize that I should have a prepared backup plan beforehand and
prepare all materials earlier to make sure everything went smoothly. Therefore, I also
make sure to read each step in my lesson plan thoroughly to plan out the right
instructions that I am supposed to give them. Plus, I test out and discover the
platform first to avoid any technical problems.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
After implementing these few approaches, I managed to grasp the flow of the lesson
and had pupils go through the task that I have prepared. Simultaneously, pupils’
responses are getting better from time to time. The importance of having everything
prepared earlier can be seen as I was able to guide them in each process without
any delay and with fewer technical problems.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
After having several classes with the pupils, I am still in the process of discovering
new ways on how to conduct online classes as well as to create a suitable lesson for
them. Pupils may get tired or bored along the way in online classes. Therefore, I think
that it is vital for me as a teacher to keep on improving my skills and finding ways to
overcome any intervention during the class.

PAST EXPERIENCES
There has been an article emphasising the importance of preparation before having
the teaching and learning session. Good teaching requires a great deal of
preparation. Meador (2019) has laid out some principles for efficient planning which
are when conducting an activity, have all the materials laid out before the students
arrive. Next, practice the activity to ensure that each works correctly. Last but not
least, establish specific procedures and guidelines for students to follow.

WEEK 4

PROBLEM
The fourth week of my practicum starts by implementing the new platform and
method for online classes. I have found numerous ways to teach the language in
online situations through Youtube. The teacher demonstrates an activity that could
attract pupil’s interest and increase interaction among them. However, despite
extensive preparation and enjoyable activities, the lesson's objectives have yet to be
met because only a few students were able to complete the task. Pupils seem to
have trouble understanding the procedure of the activity.

ANALYSIS
As pupils were doing the activity, I noticed some of them just followed what their
friends have said. Besides, they also keep asking over the same questions about the
rules of the game. It appears that unclear instructions from myself had caused
difficulty for pupils to process the idea of the activity. I have to adapt my instructions
to their level of understanding by considering several factors.

LITERATURE REVIEW / PAST EXPERIENCE
Studies and articles have been stating the crucial role of instructions in classroom
management. Sowell (2017) mentioned that instruction-giving is an area that
deserves attention and practice, as it has a major impact on how well students are
able to carry out activities and, as a result, how well they learn. When pupils do not
comprehend what they are intended to do, well-delivered instructions can have a
beneficial effect, whereas poor instructions can lead the lesson to become chaotic
and fail.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
1. Give a clear explanation and instructions.
2. Repetition in instructions.
3. Type down the rules and show them on the screen.
4. Ask for confirmation on their understanding before proceeding to the next activity.

FURTHER ACTION
I will keep on checking their progress from time to time and making sure everyone is
clear on the instructions before proceeding with the tasks. For activities that have
several steps, give instructions after each step rather than giving all instructions at
once. I tried to cultivate the habit of asking questions whenever they are having
problems in understanding.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
After implementing these few approaches, the responses increased from time to time.
Pupils have started to understand the instructions and follow through each step.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
In conclusion, it is necessary for a teacher to put ourselves in pupils’ show to know
from their point of view. The instructions should be simple and clear in order for them
to understand the task's goal.

WEEK 5

PROBLEM
This week, I am having problem dealing with time management and preparing lesson
plan earlier. I suppose to inform pupils a day before on the day they will be having
Google Meet. Thus, due to issue, I often missed out to let the pupils know about the
Meet session.

ANALYSIS
I need to have a fix schedule on Google Meet day so it would be easier for parents
and pupils. There are some pupils who are still using their parents phone. In this
case, parents need to know earlier so they could left out the gadget for pupils to use
while they are going to work. Besides, the issues regarding time management are
due to lack of planning.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned
earlier:
1. Create a fix schedule.
2. Make a checklist for the whole week.

FURTHER ACTION
I should start with setting priorities and organizing the day around the most important
tasks. Setting priorities can help keep teachers on track throughout the day, even
when the unexpected occurs and the workload can seem burdensome. I should seek
help and support from my cooperating teacher, peers, or those who are more
experienced, to discuss the best way to overcome my difficulties related to time
management.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
I did not manage to set a fixed time for the google meet since there are times where
pupils need extra exercises from the previous class. However, I make sure to inform
pupils of the specific date and day on the weekend. Then, only parents are aware on
which day they should provide the gadgets for their child to use for an online class.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
In conclusion, this week has been quite hectic on managing my time and the lesson
in the classroom. At first, it was a big struggle for me to organize everything that is
needed. However, I managed to overcome it after reflecting back on my own
weaknesses and seek advice from my cooperating teacher

WEEK 6

PROBLEM
Previously, I have managed to organize my time in preparing the materials and
informing pupils earlier about the Google Meet session every week. This has been
the sixth week of my practicum teaching year 5 Bless and I have gotten more
comfortable with the class. The problem that I am facing now is that sometimes I get
to comfortable with my pupils as both me and my pupils enjoyed the lessons, I tend
to be a bit off in terms of time management during lesson. There were times where I
get too carried away with my pupils. Therefore, the problem of spending too much
time on certain stage of the lesson happened.

ANALYSIS
The problem may arise due to a lack of time awareness between the lesson. Plus, I
am easily get carried away with the lesson and my pupils. The time distributed for
each activity is not well balanced. For example, I spend too much time on the pre-
lesson and presentation part, leaving little time for pupils to do the practice. Besides,
there was little time left for closure, leading to no closures at all during some lessons.

LITERATURE REVIEW / PAST EXPERIENCE
Good time management during the lesson is one of the strategies to have an
effective lesson. Sahito (2016) emphasised on the impact of teacher time
management is directly proportioned with the performance of students, teachers of
public primary schools do planning actively and intelligently then they may be able in
future to produce more intelligent minds for the future development of the nation.
Hence, with that being said, a significant relationship between teachers’ time
management and students’ academic performance was found.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned
earlier:
1. Consistently be aware of the time.
2. Set a limit for certain activities and I have to be punctual with it.
3. Good classroom management.

FURTHER ACTION
I have come up with some suggestions that can hopefully eradicate this problem
which is, firstly, to have a firm stand with the pupils. I have to make a firm stand that
this has to end because there are other stages that have not been finished. Second, I
need to consistently be aware of the time so that I would not get carried. Lastly, need
to set limits for myself so that even when the lesson is enjoyable, there has to be an
end.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
As I was planning the activities, I estimate how much time I will spend on each. The
results of having good time management skills during lesson has been proven as I
gain more time for extended explanation or discussion. Overall, I’m still in the
process of learning on how to be consistent in time management skills.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
In conclusion, it is proven that with effective time management skills, teachers can
increase their productivity and provide a better education for their students.

WEEK 7

PROBLEM
For the past four days, I have discovered pupils' language skills issues specifically in
writing. Writing is one of the four skills in the English language that my students in my
classroom struggle with the most. I noticed as I was marking their short creative
writing task, most of the pupils did not have appropriate sentence structure. They
tend to connect sentences without linking words. Apart from that, they often have
problems arranging the sentence according to the subject-verb-agreement structure.

ANALYSIS
One of the factors which could lead to this issue is because they have not been much
exposed to writing activities during the past PdPR sessions. They were only used to
answer questions from the google form or other online platforms. Although home-
based learning or PdPR was implemented through various digital platforms, this had
not worked for most students. There would not have been many writing worksheets
for them to do. Some of them would only understand the topic with hands-on practice.

Another factor would be the lack of emphasis on basic writing skills such as the
usage of linking words and sentence structure. As days go by and with a lack of
exercises, pupils could get forgetful with the basic elements in writing.

LITERATURE REVIEW / PAST EXPERIENCE
According to the Malaysia Now News, it was reported that one of the teachers in a
government school in Kedah said that her pupils’ literacy had been severely impaired
by the long break from the physical classroom (Selan, 2021). She mentioned that
part of the problem was a lack of practice during PdPR. Others were unable to join
the online classes at all, which she said had had a serious impact on their reading
and writing skills. As a result, it demonstrates that a lack of practice has an effect on
students' writing skills.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
There are several ways that could be done to overcome the problem mentioned
earlier:
1. Provide adequate practices.
3. Groups the low proficiency pupils together so that I can give them more attention,
while high achievers are drilled and given extra activities.

FURTHER ACTION
I have found out that pointing out and explain their mistake to them personally will
help them to realize what they have should be done in the next task to improve their
writing. They are also given a list of linking words, followed by examples to guide
them. There are some pupils who managed to overcome their mistakes and a few of
them required more consistent practices.

ASSESSMENT OF SUCCESS
I have found out that by pointing out and explain their mistake to them personally will

writing. They are also given a list of linking words, followed by examples to guide
them. There are some pupils who managed to overcome their mistakes and a few of
them required more consistent practices.

CONCLUSION / REFLECTION
Overall, I am still in the process of exploring different teaching techniques. I need to
try experimenting with other interventions and find which suits pupils the most.
Teaching methods are quite important for ideal outcomes in the learning process. As
for me, pupils should be given room to contribute as well, as this facilitates better
learning. Along the way, I will always seek guidance and help from my supervising
lecturer and cooperating teacher who have been wonderful assistance so far. I will
also ask for advice and support from other teachers and my fellow practicum mates.
