MESSAGE FROM SCHOOL ADVISORY CHAIRMAN My dear Students of West Spring, After 2 years of social distancing and seeing each other behind masks, life has finally gotten back to some semblance of normality. CCAs are back on track, Inter-School Games are resuming and for me, I was elated to be able to celebrate with the teachers and staff for Teachers’ Day. Very often when we face such a crisis like the pandemic, there is a sense of helplessness and hopelessness. It almost feels like the world has ended and that there is no way out. However, as we exit this global catastrophe, we take away the lesson that when things are down in the dumps, the only way is up. Armed with patience and persistence, we will eventually get out of it. As you graduate from West Spring and face the even greater challenges ahead, you too would encounter such stormy weather. Bring along with you the experience of this pandemic and be assured that the dark clouds will always pass. The other lesson that I took away with me during this pandemic is that we walk this path of life with our friends and family. “Social Distancing” is an oxymoron. In fact, we are never able to operate in this world if we are constantly distancing ourselves or worse still thinking that the world only revolves around the “I”. We are social beings. In the end, Life is very much a team sport. Never be individualistic. It is therefore important to stay connected and to help each other to cross that finishing line. We can never do it alone. There is a wonderful world out there and it is the rough and tumble that gives life its wonderful flavour. So, with that, I wish all of you in the graduating class all the best. Savour life and have a wonderful time! All the best! Mr. Leslie Yeo Chairperson School Advisory Committee 6 WEST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2022

I feel privileged and honoured to pen my first yearbook message for West Spring. Looking back, the global pandemic in the last two years makes all of us appreciate the things we took for granted. It has also taught us strength and resilience as we adapt to new ways of living, learning and socialising. This Yearbook is a snapshot of the highlights and memorable events of the year, and a record of the students and staff members who formed the West Spring Secondary School community in 2022. We have been fortunate to be able to bring back some excitement and vibrancy into school life this year. I would like to express my appreciation to both the staff and parents for partnering with the school especially as we navigated through the different changes to bring normalcy back to school. It really takes a village to raise a child, what more to nurture a lady and gentleman of character and learning. For the graduating cohort of 2022, we are so proud of you and all you have achieved. I hope the Yearbook reminds you of past and present friendships and how you have grown up with each other for so long now. It will also bring back fond memories of the programmes you have enjoyed in your time with West Spring as well as the teachers who have nurtured you in one way or another. My final hope for you is that as you go out into the world, you will make a positive difference. However successful you may be, true success can only be measured in your character and the relationships you foster throughout your life. Whatever path you have chosen, our best wishes will follow you throughout your lives. PARENTS’ SUPPORT GROUP As we navigated out of the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, the PSG Executive Committee (EXCO) focused the year’s activities on the School’s Mission of Shaping Character, Engaging Learners, Touching Lives. Resumed the weekly Badminton sessions! Thanks to the support of the School Leaders, the sessions enabled parents and students to bond over a healthy game of badminton and learning from each other. The average weekly turnout was up to 30 participants. Appreciating our WSSS Teachers! A group of PSG parents and students came together to create something special for our Teachers. Over a crafts workshop session, parents and students put their artistic and sewing talent to good use to produce hand sewn pencil cases and personalised handwritten Thank You notes. These were presented to WSSS Teachers during the Teachers’ Day celebrations. The School Leaders were very touched and conveyed their appreciation to the PSG! Engaged School Leaders on Secondary 3 Placement! Represented parents to clarify and discuss Secondary 3 Placement queries and concerns with School Leaders. Organised support for Night Study in School for Secondary 4 and 5 students! We are thankful for the parents who volunteered to support the daily Night Study sessions in School in the 2nd half of 2022. The intent was to provide the students with a conducive environment to prepare for the national examinations. Our appreciation goes to many more parents who contributed food and drinks for the students’ consumption as well! Welcome new PSG EXCO Members! The EXCO is run by parent volunteers and we are delighted to welcome to the team Azlin, David, Henry, Jimmy, Kate and Kelly! 2022 PSG Executive Committee (EXCO) Touching the Lives of our Graduating Students! CHARACTER EXCELLENCE

CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION Key Appointment Holders HOD/CCE Mr. Marcus Sze Kah Choon Education & Career Guidance Counsellor Ms. Aries Lim Bee Pheng Highlights of 2022 Awarded North West Outstanding School Partner Bronze Award 2022 National Education (NE) Commemorative Days The school commemorates key National Education Commemorative Days, in particular, Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, Racial Harmony Day. These commemorative days provide opportunities for rich Student Development Experiences (SDEs). Reflecting on the war in Ukraine, students appreciate that Singapore is our homeland, and this is where they belong. They understand that we must ourselves defend Singapore. Students understand the importance of the connectedness between our neighbouring countries and they can play an active role in fostering people-to-people ties, and thus celebrate the regions’ diversity and vibrancy and promote the spirit of friendship and collaboration. The Racial Harmony Day commemorative activities organised for the students allow students to appreciate the unique cultural diversity that characterises Singapore life. We will continue to complement one another because of our long-shared history and heritage. We must preserve racial and religious harmony in Singapore. Cohort Learning Journeys As part of CCE 2021, the school had planned meaningful and engaging cohort Learning Journeys for each level from Secondary One to Secondary Five in 2022. These Student Development Experiences cater to the needs and interests of students. The programmes contribute towards the holistic development of our students in the physical, aesthetic, intellectual, cultural, moral, and social domains. • Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) • Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Experiences • NRIC Presentation Ceremony • National Service Engagement Talk • Outdoor Adventure Learning (OAL) Cohort Camps • Secondary One Cohort Camp • Secondary One Cohort Learning Journey to Places of Worship • Secondary Two Cohort Learning Journey to National Museum of Singapore • Secondary Three Cohort Learning Journey to Heritage Trail in Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India • Secondary Four and Five Cohort National Education Learning Journey • Student Leadership Development (SLD) Programmes • Values in Actions (VIA) • Mental Health Exhibition • R.I.S.E. to the Challenge Sustainability Exhibition by Keppel Land and the Sustainable Singapore Gallery • Sustainability Talk by NWCDC and NEA • Aesthetic Assembly Programmes 20 WEST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2022

EDUCATION AND CAREER GUIDANCE This year, the school received a new Education and Career Guidance (ECG) Counsellor, Ms Aries Lim, who was deployed from MOE to West Spring Secondary School on 28 February 2022. She helps students discover their strengths, interests and aspirations, and guides them in making informed plans and decisions with regard to their education and career journey. She provides ECG counselling services to students, either individually or in small groups, and conducts workshops for bigger groups. In Term 2, she has worked closely with the HODs, teachers and Year Heads to organise and conduct workshops for the graduating classes on their aptitude-based admission exercises such as DSA JC and ITE/Poly EAE. In these workshops, she guided students on how to write effective personal statements and prepare portfolios and interviews. For the Secondary 2 students, the ECG Counsellor co-conducted with the teachers the Secondary 3 Placement Talk to guide students in their subject combinations selection for their upper secondary years. Some parents who had attended the talk also subsequently engaged the ECG Counsellor during the Meet-the-Parent session to have further discussion on the subject selection, together with their children. The school also provides ECG training to the teachers by conducting a school-based workshop for teachers to equip them with skills to effectively engage students in ECG conversations. The ECG team will continue to partner with the school leaders, teachers, parents, educational institutions and industries, to deliver the ECG curriculum to the students. She will also provide appropriate training to the school personnel to build their capacity to provide ECG support to the students. WEST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2022 21

VALUES IN ACTION 2022 Values in Action is a part of Class Cohesion and character building where students from the various levels take on various activities to support and strengthen the community, while simultaneously learning important values such as respect and compassion. These were the various level VIAs undertaken by our students: Sec 1: Rethinking of Possibilities through Sustainability Programme and Reduce Food Wastage at Home Project The Secondary 1 students learned about the importance of going green in their daily actions through a talk conducted by a vendor, designed a 3R poster (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) during CCE lesson and performed duties that encouraged recycling of papers and plastics within the classrooms. There were Environmental Envoys appointed in each class to continuously motivate students on the need to go green. Students also conducted a Food Wastage Home Project by creating a brochure on the need as well as the ways to save food and bringing this awareness to their family members at home. Sec 2: Social Entrepreneurship on Sustainability and Inclusive Society The Secondary 2 students were engaged in a level-wide programme where each class set up booths to sell food items and proceeds from these were donated to selected charity organisations. Sec 3: CNY Greeting Card and Sustainability Message for Senja Rental Blocks, TRIGEN Project and Student-Initiated VIA activities. The Secondary 3 students designed and created CNY greeting cards from recyclable materials during their CCE lessons and these were given to the residents at the Senja Rental Blocks to spread good cheer during the festive season. Selected students from the level also did volunteer work in the North West @Trigen Project to better communicate and build rapport with the elderly. Students were provided with some guidelines and tips on communication with the elderly, trained to measure and record the elderly’s vital signs in cases of emergency and equipped with knowledge on management techniques to advise the elderly. Additionally, student-initiated VIA projects were done by students such as the SBS Kindness Month where thank-you notes and tokens were given to spread kindness as well as show appreciation to Bus Captains and Station Staff. Sec 4 and 5: Service to the School: Care for the School Environment through Area Cleaning. Students from the graduating level were allocated specific areas in the school compound to help with area cleaning. This was done in the earlier part of the year to help ease the burdens of our school cleaners and to also show our appreciation to their endless efforts in keeping the school spick and span during the heightened SMM period. The value of such competition is about forging friendships, where teams were formed and challenged to work towards a common goal. In line with our Learning for Life Programme, students had demonstrated sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. What was more heartening is that our students were gracious in victory and resilient in defeat. We had the support of student volunteers as umpires, scorekeepers, timekeepers and line judges. We would like to attribute the success of the games to the student volunteers. 32 WEST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2022

SINGAPORE YOUTH FESTIVAL ARTS PRESENTATION 2022 - MARCHING BAND We embarked on the preparations for the SYF Arts Presentation of Marching Bands by having a team of dedicated alumni who were ever ready to return to school to coach the current band members and sustain the band culture. From the usual numbers of more than 90 performers, we had to reduce it to only 50. Despite difficulties faced with Covid restrictions on the number of performers, we managed to overcome the odds and race against time to complete a good show. Our students have benefited from the rich experience in the SYF preparation journey. Together with our passionate alumni team, students had fostered a deeper appreciation for the effort and determination that goes into performing as a marching show band. For the effort put in, the band has sustained the results and clinched the Certificate of Distinction for SYF 2022. WEST SPRING SECONDARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2022 35
