Due to Covid restrictions, we were only able to send 50 performers, compared to the usual 90. Nonetheless, the band was still able to sustain a winning streak of Certificate of Distinction in the SYF Arts Presentation of Marching Bands. NDP Observance Ceremony Celebrating NDP@Heartlands, the band, together with the school’s uniformed groups, took part in the National Day Parade Observation Ceremony held at the Bukit Panjang Community Centre on 7 August, in celebration of the nation’s 57th birthday. Malaysia International Virtual Band Championship On top of that, the band has represented Singapore on the international platform in the Malaysia International Virtual Band Championships (MIVBC) 2022, a music competition featuring concert band, solo performers, colour guards and marching show bands from around the World. This event is sanctioned by the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB), based in the United States. For their first venture in an international competition, the team clinched the 1st runner-up position for the senior division (aged 16-19) in the marching show band category. Mental Skills Training includes strengthening and conditioning of the mind towards shooters’ goals and competitive spirit. Intra & Inter school games and competitions The club’s focus is the National School Games. We also participate in other competitions hosted by the Singapore Shooting Association, NUS & NTU Invitational Shoots. We also conduct intrashooting competitions to encourage shooters to compete with one another to hone their shooting skills, even when it is not the competition season. Physical Training Activity Physical Training (PT) is essential for shooters to be fitter and have the strength to persevere through long sessions of shoots and increase competition stamina. In June, they had a 3-day Student Councillor Camp which culminated in a campfire. In November, the Sec 2 students together with potential Sec 2 CCA student leaders went through a 3-day Student Leaders Academy where they were assessed on their ability to lead their peers and others. Besides that, the student councillors formed several School Improvement Teams (SITs) whereby they became the voice of the student population and spoke up for changes to improve the overall school experience. The student councillors also rallied the school population in an umbrella donation drive as part of the Share-An-Umbrella initiative in which the school partnered with Zhenghua Grassroots Group to provide umbrellas for residents and students to use during inclement weather. APPLIED LEARNING PROGRAMME - EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND CRITICAL THINKING IN MEDIA LITERACY (ME-LIT) “We want our students to be critical media consumers and competent media producers.” Secondary 1 – English-Language Public Speaking and Presentation Through this programme, we hope that our students will be able to stand up and speak with confidence and to be prepared for tertiary education and the workforce. Secondary 2 – Applied Learning for Geography cum ICT Project Work Lessons This provides opportunities for students to work in groups to complete a media-related performance task and most of the collaboration is done via Google Apps for Education. There is a 10-week workshop where vendors are engaged to teach our students media literacy skills. Student Journalism The Spring Post was launched officially in January 2022 with a host of articles written and curated by our own West Spring student journalists and guided by our EL and Humanities teachers. The students undergo 2 journalism workshops by Singapore Press Holdings and learn the ropes of running a press room. Students collaborate to create a website to host the articles. AESTHETICS WEEK 2022 Music - West Spring Got Talent! In conjunction with Aesthetics Week, the Music Dept organised West Spring Got Talent! This is an annual platform that allows students with the interest and aptitude in the performing arts an opportunity to express themselves through varied forms of performing arts. This could be dancing, playing an instrument, singing etc. Students taking Music at the higher levels (O Level & Music Elective) were invited to perform for this showcase. ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE WEEK 2022 The English Language and Literature (ELL) Week started in 2014 as “Shakespeare Week” to commemorate the birth of William Shakespeare. The overall objective of this event is to allow students to learn and use English Language and Literature in a fun way through collaboration and SCAN HERE interactive activities. This year, as with all the other years, a series of events was planned to involve students of all levels. MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE FORTNIGHT 2022 The Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight Programme aims to create an immersive environment for learning and appreciating the local mother tongue languages and culture. Malay Language For the Malay Language Unit, the theme for 2022 is Malay Folklore. The Lower Secondary students went on a virtual journey via Deck Toys to learn about the story of ‘Si Luncai’ while the Upper Secondary students discover the world of ‘Si Tanggang’. Secondary 1 students explored the different traditional wear and learnt how to fold a traditional headgear called ‘tanjak’. The Secondary 2 students reimagined the tale of ‘Si Luncai’ to create a book cover, whilst the Secondary 3 students created poems in groups to share the bravery of ‘Tun Fatimah’. The Secondary 4 and 5 students acted out and recorded a scene from the tale of ‘Si Tanggang’. The virtual learning materials as well as the works of the students are on a virtual display in Malay Unit Google Site to share the love of Malay folklore with the rest of the students and staff. Chinese Language The Secondary 1 and 2 students explored the cultures of Chopsticks Usage, Folding Fans and Chinese Traditional Costumes during a series of cultural courses. They aim to foster in our students the passion for cultural learning and encourage our students to recognise their ability to appreciate and experience MTL as ‘a living language’ in everyday life. The “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” game put the Secondary 3 and 4 students through their paces, the students who were able to answer most questions got to win attractive prizes. SCHOOL EXCELLENCE AWARDS CEREMONY 2022 We aim to recognise and reward students who had given their best in 2021 in both academic and character excellence. Top students in subjects, levels and even students who had graduated in 2021 came back to commemorate the event. The Student of Year Award was also given out on this day to recognise resilience in character. SECONDARY TWO, THREE AND FOUR APPLIED LEARNING MODULES AND ELECTIVE MODULES 2022 In Semester 1, our Secondary 2, 3, and 4 Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students attended ITE’s Applied Learning Modules and Elective Modules at College Central and College West. Elective Modules are short courses developed by ITE to broaden the learning experience of secondary school students. Our students learn about ITE’s full-time Nitec and Higher Nitec courses, the possible educational progression and career pathways. THE HEART OF CCE TRAINING Every Teacher is a CCETeacher. The first session of The HeART of CCE Training Workshop aimed to equip our teachers with the understanding of the basic psychological, developmental and learning needs of students. The second session of the training focused on how teachers can build a collective understanding of some of the central concepts in CCE. The training culminated with a lesson demonstration by our Special CCE Teacher, Mdm. Revathi. The demonstration helped teachers explore facilitation strategies on contemporary issues or sensitive issues during CCE Lessons. TEACHERS’ DAY LUNCH 2022 Finally, after a two-year hiatus, all staff were able to celebrate Teachers’ Day. The theme for this year was ‘A Magical Garden Party’, organised by the Staff Well-Being Committee. The school hall was beautifully decorated with fairy lights, balloons and flowers. A photobooth was set up for everyone to take group photos with many props to choose from and there was also a wide variety of sumptuous food served from the buffet line and the live stations. The highlight of the program was the illusionist, Mr Alexander Yuen, who performed magical illusions using iPads. The finale of the celebrations was The Best Dressed Awards as well as The Most Creative Award. From the loudest applause, the Best Dressed were Mr. Nurhizam and Mrs. Shelia Wang. The Most Creative award went to Ms. Aubrey Yeo. This year, the Parents’ Support Group gifted teachers pencil cases with motivational quotes. We all had a blast on this special day! SCHOOL-BASED TRAINING ON E-PEDAGOGY School Based Training on e-Pedagogy was conducted by Teacher Leaders on 25 April 2022. To further enhance the designing of e-Pedagogy lessons, IP Heads and Teacher Leaders worked together to conduct clinic sessions by the various departments on 18 July 2022. STAFF LEARNING FESTIVAL The weekly 5-Minute Sharing (5MS) and Professional Hour (PH) Sessions culminated in the Learning Festival on 18 Nov 2022 for the staff. This year, teachers spent Monday mornings sharing about e-Pedagogy and other teaching pedagogies. They worked together within Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) to improve teaching and learning in the school. The Learning Festival is an annual event for the staff and also acts as a platform for PLTs to share their projects and learning to colleagues from Cluster W5 schools. SCHOOL STAFF RETREAT The school staff retreat was held at Temasek Club to allow the staff to gather and re-envision the school’s vision and mission statements for us to take the school to greater heights. We indulged in fun exercises that forced us to rethink some of our strategies and start looking forward to new experiences. With the increased use of technology in our modern world, students learn to appreciate the ethical, legal and security issues relating to the use of computers in society. They are taught to recognise the impact of ICT on society and people and develop basic computational thinking and problem-solving skills through coding. Elements of Business Studies The focus on using e-Pedagogy in EBS saw the Secondary 3 EBS students going on a virtual learning journey to Jewel Changi Airport using Deck Toys. They got to learn about how the businesses at Jewel attract several types of customers and what makes Jewel an attractive place for tourists. Selected Secondary 3 EBS students got a chance to experience working at a luxury hotel, Mandarin Oriental for a week in November 2022 as the hotel hosted the Morgan Stanley event. They were put in different departments of the hotel and got to be part of the operations for this event. Highlights of 2022 Computer Applications Our students participate annually in the Animation and Game Making (AGM) Competition organised by the Computer Education Unit in MOE. The competition seeks to provide a platform to display students’ work, develop students’ interest in media design, and improve students’ communication and presentation skills. Jannata Bee Abdul Wahab Key Programmes Activity Based Learning and Inquiry Based Learning The adopted pedagogy for both Food and Consumer Education (FCE) as well as the study of Nutrition and Food Science (NFS), which hopes to engage students more meaningfully and provides them a rich learning experience. Lower Secondary FCE students completed projects where they had to apply the concepts of nutrition and make informed choices as consumers. Students also modified a base recipe and created their very own savoury muffins suitable for children. In addition, Secondary 2 FCE students were introduced to Food Science Investigation where students carried out food experiments and evaluated the outcomes observed. Students presented their findings through digital media. Upper Secondary NFS students were presented with authentic learning experiences where they can relate and apply real life experiences through given scenarios. This helps develop students’ ability to understand the concept of nutrients and meal planning for the various age groups. Applied Learning Programme for Secondary 2 Geography classes Students embarked on an exciting media literacy journey with the use of various media apps to create a video about the surrounding neighbourhood and inclusive society. Highlights of 2022 • YouTube channels created for Investigative Issues for all levels to ensure students can learn best in the new normal environment. • The setting up and launch of The Spring Post, a WSSS Student Journalism project aligned with English and ALP to allow students to write, design and market articles covering contemporary issues related to Singapore and matters within their interest. • Secondary 4 inter-class competition for Tourism advert project where top 3 groups won Best Video Award 2022. Groups that won were from both Pure and elective Geography classes. • Cluster sharing was done by Ms Lydia Teng for History on 30 June and Mr Timothy Teh for Geography on 31 March. Questioning has a crucial role in the process of learning as it stimulates and maintains interest and encourages our students to think and focus on the content. Through planned questioning, we can steer our students’ thinking along a particular route to stimulate learning, to aid recall, and to challenge. Technology in Mathematics In 2022, the Math department has incorporated our Algebra workshop for selected Secondary 2 Express and Normal (Academic) in our weekly Learning Support Programme. Similarly, the department also conducted an in-house GeoGebra and Excel workshop for all our Secondary 2 Express and Normal (Academic) OOS students in their Math lessons to introduce the software to the students and to equip them with the basic skills for further exploration and for self-directed learning in graphs. This is coordinated with the introduction of the PLD initiative in school since last year. Through activities such as ‘kampung’ games, an introduction to Malay traditional food and exposure to the arts such as basket weaving, the programme hopes to enliven the Malay spirit in the hearts of West Spring ladies and gentlemen. It was indeed a good platform for students to learn a new skill and share their learning experiences with their classmates and Form teacher. A fantastic start to the year indeed! Sec 3 Outward Bound School The OBS experience represents a key milestone for our Secondary 3s. Our students will experience a 2D 1N programme from 20-21 July. Although the programme is modified, it will certainly test our students’ demonstrated grit and resilience. Highlights of 2022 Inter Class Games With the easing of safe management measures, we resumed the Inter-Class Games for our Sec 2 and Sec 3 students. The value of such competition is about forging friendships when a team is formed and challenged to work towards a common goal. In line with our Learning for Life Programme, students demonstrated sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. What was more heartening is that our students were gracious in victory and resilient in defeat. We had the support of student volunteers as umpires, scorekeepers, timekeepers, and line judges. Lim Sieow Leng Wendy Key Programmes Inquiry-Based Learning The department pedagogy of Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) allows for more co-creation of knowledge and learner-centred teaching where students’ queries are addressed. With the increase in student engagement in learning and transfer of ownership of learning to the students, we hope to inculcate the Joy of Learning and encourage more students to pursue higher education and career in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM).
