Although the History Society will not have had any meetings until the AGM on Tuesday 20
March the Committee has been considerably busy involved with starting to catalogue and index the Archives.
Mark Ratcliffe, our Vice-Chairman, has transformed our potential to store archives from the initial storage

consisting of filing cabinets to a more comprehensive facility
(pictured). To review, collate and organise the fast amount of
documents that have been collected over many years will take a
great deal of time.

On their completion it will provide a reservoir of information
which will be available as a resource tool not only locally to the
Village but also Essex Records Office and the Recorders of
Uttlesford as a County facility. Many of the documents when
reviewed will be scanned and are able to be documented on a CD
which are can be accessed by computer. The programme for 2018
is being finalised with some of the dates already agreed with
Speakers. The dates are published in the magazine and a final picture will be available upon confirmation of the
final talks.

A question on the Community Facebook was asking about an individual who had been living at Little Brewers
before it became Hatfield Haven. We can supply some details of a previous tenant which sheds light on laying the
transatlantic cable.

Sir Charles Tilston Bright 1832—1888 Born on the 8th June 1832 in Wanstead Essex
He first joined the Electric Telegraph Company; in1853 was appointed engineer to the Magnet Telegraph
Company. In 1858 was appointed chief engineer to the Atlantic Telegraph Company; and was responsible for
first Telegraph Cable between Ireland and America. Sir Charles Bright went on to supervise the laying of
submarine cables in various regions around the world. Sir Charles was most likely one of the early tenants in
Little Brewers (Now Hatfield Haven) situated in the Stortford Road Hatfield Heath. Sir Charles became Liberal

M.P. for Greenwich 1865 to 1868; he died at his home in Abbey Wood in 1888.
Confirmation of his tenancy is documented in Kelly’s Directory which can be found in the archives.

A BIG THANK YOU !!!!!

A big thank you to the magazine deliverers, not just for getting the mags out through everyone’s
letterboxes, but also for getting all the January bags back in plenty time for the February issue; it does
make the job that bit easier to have the whole set , and not have to go scratching around looking for
missing ones or making up substitutes. 10/10 and a gold star to every one of you!
Michael Hockley

There is a wonderful person or persons in this village who I think must come along Friars Lane on a fairly
regular basis. He/she/they are kind enough to assist us in picking up the litter that unfortunately gets left
in the gateway by the bench seat. On several occasions I have seen rubbish there when passing first thing
in the morning. I have returned later in the day with a bag to pick it up, to find, much to my surprise and
joy, that it has already been cleared.

It is intensely irritating and frustrating that this action is necessary at all, but …..

WE ARE HUGELY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR EFFORTS! And we are very
grateful to the Hockleys
Michael and Catherine Hockley for all they do to get the
Friars Farm
Magazine on its way
around the village!

CRIME PREVENTION
Your Property
Your belongings may be important to you but to a thief they are just a way of making easy cash.
Marking your possessions makes them less attractive to burglars because they are hard to sell on and too hot
to handle.
Every year we recover property worth thousands of pounds but are unable to return it to its rightful owner
because it can’t be properly identified.
We hope you are never the victim of theft but you can increase the chances of being reunited with any stolen
items by registering them on the Immobilise website.
Immobilise helps us identify the owners of recovered property every day. It's completely free and allows you to
create a private and secure inventory all your personal property. All you need to do is register on the
Immobilise website and list possessions identifiable by a unique reference number like IMEI, serial number,
bicycle frame number etc.
Protecting your home against thieves is vital but marking your belongings, especially those with sentimental
value, could deter thieves or help us prove they were stolen. Registering them with Immobilise makes it easier
for us to identify you as the owner.
How can I mark my property?
There are several ways to mark your belongings and you can buy easy to use kits for each method from DIY
stores.
Engraving or etching
Use an electric engraving tool to leave a permanent mark on most hard surfaces.
Ultraviolet marking
Use an ultraviolet pen to leave a mark which only becomes visible under a UV lamp. The mark can fade over
time so needs to be renewed regularly.
Ceramic marking
Use ceramic marking pens to leave a permanent mark on china and glass without cutting or scratching the
surface.
Electronic marking
Modern televisions allow you to record your details electronically and prevent others accessing them with a
security code.
What should I mark it with?
A simple way to identify your property is to mark it with your postcode followed by your house or flat number.
After doing so, take photographs of the items alongside a ruler or tape measure. This will help make any
insurance claims you may need to make in the future easier.
For more information on property marking download the Home Office Coded for keeps leaflet.

Palm Sunday Donkey Parade and Service.

On Palm Sunday, 25th of March, Hatfield Heath URC is starting our Easter celebrations in style this year.

We are having a parade around the village with a donkey, hopefully with palm leaves (or English equivalent) finishing
up at our church, where, weather permitting, we will be having an outdoor service, followed by a lunch. The service is
planned for 12:30. Full details will be available nearer the time. It would be fantastic to see as many of you as possible,
even if you do not want to attend the service please support us on our walk around the village.

Pet Service

A date for your diary's Sunday the 15th of July we are planning to hold a "Pet Service" you are invited to bring along
your Dog, Cat, Tortoise or Rabbit or any other more exotic animal you may have. This promises to be a very interesting
service. More details will be issued nearer the time.

Summer Holiday Club

From Monday the 6th of August to Friday 10th of August we are hoping to run a Holiday Club in the hall attached to
our Church. The club will run from 9.30 until 12.00, it will be open to children aged 5 to 11/12 (year 6).

The Club will involve Crafts, Sports/Games, a Bible Story and other fun activities inside and out (dependent on the
weather) a drink and snack will be provided, all for the fantastic sum of £5 for the week.

DRB checked and first aid trained staff will be running the week. Obviously a lot of preparation has to go into
something like this so if you think you may be interested in your child/children attending could you please express an
interest at the email address [email protected] This is purely an expression of interest and not at this
stage committing your children to attend.

MRS JOYCE BURTON

My Aunt, Mrs. Joyce Burton, died on 25th January 2018.  She was 87 years old.
Until four years ago, she was living at ‘Primley’, Hatfield Heath.  She was born there on 27th August 1930.
She attended Hatfield Heath Village School and afterwards worked at Parker’s Stores in Sheering for 25 years.
When she married my uncle, Ted Burton, they lived at Sheering from 1957 until 1973 returning to ‘Primley’
where she lived after his death until 2014.
My Aunt has been living with her cousin at Manningtree before entering Colchester Hospital before
Christmas but before that she was a long term resident of Hatfield Heath.
