Co-op, and the Stag Public House in 2011

Hatfield Heath was quite unique in having two
Churches and two Schools in the second half of
the 19th Century and the first 30years of the 20th
Century. There were also two grocers, Mr Buck
and Mr Peacock.
If you attended Holy Trinity you tended to shop
at Mr Peacocks and send your children to the
National School. If you went to the
Congregational Chapel, you shopped at Mr Bucks
and sent your Children to the British School on

VISIT TO THE P.O. W.CAMP at

Mill Lane Hatfield Heath

by a group from
BISHOPS STORTFORD COLLEGE

On Friday 19th Feb 2011
Reported by Melissa Craig from BSC,

Edited by R/G
Our teachers, and a local man, Mr Robin Gurnett, who
lives in the village, recently took my class from
Bishops Stortford College around the Prisoner of War
Camp at Hatfield Heath. We learned a lot about the
morose atmosphere of the camp, yet how lucky the
prisoners were to have been sent there. They had quite
an easy life, and knew how fortunate they were,
mostly working on farms and better than it would
have been back in their own countries, which is why
they were generally quite well behaved.
The first thing we were shown was one of the long
wooden huts in which they lived, generally rather
crowded conditions in long rows of bunk beds. It was
rather wet and dismal, and featured simple dirty walls,
and now used to store egg boxes etc, one must
remember that back in Germany, our prisoners were
kept in Concentration like camps, with constant
thoughts of escaping. It seems that here, very few
escape s were attempted, with one man getting only as
far as Harlow station. We learnt that because of the
difficult relationships between the Italians and the
Germans They had to be kept separately. We were
shown the site of the camp theatre within the camp
confines, where various forms of entertainment was
put on by the inmates. They also had their own
hospital block. We were able to see the main entrance,
which unfortunately we could not explore as it
belongs to someone else, as the land was divided up at
the end of the war, we were still able to get a sense of
the eerie atmosphere just from looking at it. It was so
hard to imagine that the ground we were walking on
was the same earth that
prisoners of war walked upon so many years ago. We
all found it very surreal, and it was even more
amazing that we didn't even know we had such an
interesting place right near where we live.
Throughout the afternoon, many questions were asked
as we were all astonished by the place, and actually
became somewhat infatuated with it; nobody wanted
to leave.
We all asked as many questions as we could about the
lives of the prisoners, finding out that 3,000 people
had passed through the place. At one stage 1,500 at
one go, so you can imagine the size of it.
First Italians, then Germans, the Displaced Persons
from all over Europe.
As we returned to our bus, we thought the visit was a
great success, and thanks to
everyone who helped out. I cannot emphasise enough,

Traditionally Lent has been seen as a time of penitence

do that. Nowadays a walk around the village footpaths or
on the Heath in springtime could be a great opportunity
to pause in our busy schedule and contemplate the big
questions of life. Of course, Easter claims that these are
answered in the new life that Jesus brings to all who trust
in him.
Whatever we are looking forward to at this time of year
do enjoy some happy times and times to reflect on what
makes life good.
Best wishes for Easter and God Bless

of St Mary’s Church. You
have probably all heard about HATIELD HEATH
the discovery of Medieval
wall paintings in St Mary’s. Recently lots of gold Fella’s
ornamentation has been found on the cleaned beams of
the roof. (It is just gold-coloured paint by the way!) The Hairdressers
annual Flower Festival will take place as usual on the
weekend 25th/26th June. I invite all villagers to come and Within simple beauty
look at what has been happening at the church then.
St Mary's Church is a Norman building which Appointments required for Tuesday/wednesday
contains numerous Roman bricks, a unique roof
beam which is 40ft long and a wonderful 14th
Century stained glass window. The Normans began
by building the tower starting in 1160 , but before
they came (in 1066!) remnants show that there was
a Saxon building here. Sheering is a Saxon name
meaning the settlement of the followers of Schere,
also known as the 'army people'.
