Today we are one of the top programs
in the country. Each resident is exposed
to every phase of podiatric medicine and
surgery including emergency medicine,
podopediatrics, podiatric surgery,
peripheral vascular disease, dermatology,
physical therapy, radiology, general
medicine, orthopedics, anesthesiology.

Each resident rotates through three
area hospitals as well as through the
podopediatrics suite and the adult suites
at the Cleveland Foot Clinic.

OUR RESIDENTS

Each resident is required to complete
a research paper. It is the philosophy
of the director of the residency training
that research is the responsibility of
every medical specialist in general and
podiatry in particular.

Each resident is also responsible for
clinical instruction to the senior and
junior students at the Cleveland Foot
Clinic.

STUDENT PODIATRY POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE

S.P.P.A.C. is the student arm of the Podiatry Political Action Committee fi.1dae; 3anuar~ 2
(PPAC). Its ' purpose is to promote political awareness and advance the
cause of podiatry as a profession. Our organization (SPPAC) educates the {)r-. Josph: Addcint<-
students, our future colleagues, toward the importance of individual and
group involvements in current legislative affairs, the "real world" of :ll'ttabtt' 'A.'P.1\- :BoarJ <fi 1iutlu•
Podiatry. Our members write researched articles of information in the
monthly FOOTPRINTS, and hold peTiodic informational discussions. 'WilfdiSCMSS olT ~cbt. !} 1'>1H\
SPPAC is an important resource to our students, and the profession.
Through your class representitives you will realize the strength that comes
from working collectively toward a common goal. Your SPPAC class
representitive can help you find to whom you should write, what to say
and how to present your case in the professional manner that will promote
the growth and stature of our fine profession.

An adjunctive function of SPPAC, along with each and every
conscientious colleague of ours, is to raise funds for the national PPAC
annual campaign. It is an interesting comment that students of podiatry
donate 10% of the national committees total income, even though we are
outnumbered by practitioners at a ratio of 1000 to 1.

This year, through the national committee, SPPAC has supported these
Title XVI/I amendments:

· Granting podiatrists the authority under Medicare to certify and
recertify medical necessity for hospitalization, skilled nursing and home
health care services.

· Authorizing podiatrists to serve as physician members of hospital
utilizaion review committees,

· Adding plantar warts to medicares ' benefit package,
· Permitting podiatrists to become members of local professional

standards review organizations, and
· Requiring the Department of Health and Human Resources to conduct a

study assessing the costs of adding routine foot care services to
Medicares list of benefits.
Podiatrys' success is our success! Only YOUR involvement and
contributions can help us achieve our goal. So please, of yourself and of
your pocketbook, give generously to SPPAC. Your donations are an
investment into your future . YOU will reap the benefits, and, don 't you
deserve it?

PHI ALPHA PI

Since its founding in 1919, Phi Alpha Pi Fraternity has strived to
advance the profession of podiatric medicine. As the first
professional fraternity of podiatric medicine, Phi has grown into one
of the strongest fraternities in existence.

Phi stresses the ideals of high academic and clinical knowledge.
, Our clinics provide each member with a variance of podiatric

clinical experience. As a fully equipped and licensed podiatric clinic,
members are able to develop their podiatric skills to an optimum.
Numerous CPC's are held at the clinics to reinforce what the
members have experienced in the clinical setting.

This year, Phi presented its fourth annual Christmas party and
podopediatrics screening program. As a value to its members, plus
establishing podiatry in the community, this program is unique and
essential. Phi continued the format of presenting new ideas through
its scientific seminars. These seminars provide the members with
, knowledge via lectures and workshops. Much of the success of
these seminars are due to the participation of Alumni who come to
share their knowledge with the fraternity.

Membership in Phi Alpha Pi enables its members to enhance
their professional skills and develop a sense of brotherhood. Each
year an Annual Spring Formal culminates the years activities, with
special honor given to senior fraternity members.

Phi Alpha Pi Fraternity seeks to establish a sense of
professionalism through its members and a level of experience that
will enable them to continually expand the scope of podiatric
medicine.

Sincerely,
David Moss
President, Phi Alpha Pi 1980-81
