10.3 Zero Defect University Project in collaboration with
the ZDUP

Background

Administrative and related work bottlenecks and non-standardized practices dilutes the
development initiatives of the University. The purpose of this project is to identify the problems
pertaining to existing system and suggest improvements and develop SOPs for each division
of administration.

Objectives

• Research and map the administrative bottlenecks
• Identify the best possible practices to minimize the problems
• Re-engineer the admin practices
• Develop ICT driven solutions to implement the identified standard practices

Scope

• Identifying problems
• Researching the impact of the identified problems.
• En-engineering the identifying Processes and building SOPs
• Develop management system

Constraints

• Existing FR and ARs
• Excessive documentation work loads

Assumptions

• Existing SOPs based on the circulars can be altered to minimize the waste and the lead-
time

• Risks
• Changing nature of FRs, ARs.

11 RESEARCH ETHICS AND GOOD PRACTICES

Academics are expected to conduct research in their fields of specialization. Scientists
demonstrate values and principles in scientific research. Scientists concern developing human
knowledge in the world and improving human skill to use the new knowledge in order to
achieve critical goals for the benefit of the humankind or the society.

• Scientist works for the goals of scientific research based on the scientific research
freedom and obey practical limitations for safeguarding of human life, welfare, dignity
and liberty.

• Scientist abides full responsibility for every scientific research or experiment he or she
conducts, particularly with regard to its effect on human lives and on human physical
and mental health, welfare, dignity and liberty.

• Scientist pays attention to considerations regarding use of animals in research and
experimentation and concerns regarding the lives and welfare of the animals being
used and minimizes the suffering that may be caused upon during the experiment or
thereafter. Further, the scientist does every scientific act with integrity in agreement
with the scientific method at the highest standards, analyses data with the required
scope, depth and accuracy and presents his or her data in full accurately, honestly and
impartially.

• Scientist engages in scientific detections in a wholly professional manner, keep up-to-
date developments in his or her area of expertise and teaches the values and principles
of scientific research to all those conducting research or experimentation under his or
her supervision.

• The scientist acts within an international framework of scientific collaboration, based
on the shared scientific goals by maintaining an atmosphere of openness, mutual
assistance and trust among scientists, their assistants and students.

• Scientist recognizes individual, collective and institutional credit and may retain rights
to intellectual property for scientific achievements.

Academic researchers are not an exception to above values and principles.

Situations where ethics need to be considered in research carried out by University Teachers
include:

Identification and justification of research problems, conflicts of interest, utilization of funds,
resources and methodology, social and biological research, reporting of results, publications
and duplicate publications, authorships and research fraud. In addition, ethical issues could
arise in conducting human and animal research and in conducting research in genetic, ethnic,
religious and gender studies.

11.1 Identification and justification of research problems
