Academics And Activities

The Class of 1989 came back this year in Jared Kaufmann Tony Amigleo Jeanne Tomita
force. From the beginning of the school year Advisor President Vice-President
at Acquaintance Week & Field Day they were
united. They overwhelmed the school and had Randall Cabana Deena Chong Karen Chang
everyone bopping to the then popular rap Secretary Treasurer Senator
"Wipeout".

Soon after, the school year really began and
the pressure of real class work sunk in. The
juniors were faced with a course load of Rhe
toric, Chemistry, and, Asian Studies. This was
real work and only the strong would survive.

The hard work would soon pay off as the
junior division attended the annual Junior De
but, at Sacred Heart Church. Here they got a
taste of what it is like to be an upperclassman.
During that night in November, they received
their class rings — A symbol of unity and
strength.

As close to the top as they are, senior year is
yet to come. Here they can look forward to
college essays, more exams and reports, and
the sweetest thing of all — graduation.

The Class of 1990 is filled with spirit. When
they arrived as freshmen, they filled the halls
with wandering eyes and frightened faces. But
now they look upon Maryknoll as their home
away from home; a place to be amongst
peers, to study, to laugh, and even to cry. A
place where close friends are.

As sophomores their responsibilities in
creased as they encountered a more de
manding schedule. They were challenged with
the rigors of Chemistry, Geometry and U.S. His
tory. They also participated enthusiastically in

the traditional events as Acquaintance Week,
Winter Ball, Christmas Aloha, Homecoming,
and Spring Festival.

The junior class pulled together and worked
diligently to make the annual Sophomore-Sen
ior Brunch a success. At the end of the year,
the sophomores bid farewell to the seniors and
proudly accepted the role as upperclassmen
of Maryknowll High School.

Freshmen — the youngest addi I
tions to the Maryknoll family are
welcomed with Acquaintance
Week hysteria following three days
of Orientation at Frosh Camp.

For the Class of 1991 this was a
glimpse of what lay ahead as their
high school days began. The fresh
men soon adapted to the routines
and surprises of MHS. With determi
nation they readily accepted the
many new challenges presented to
them — learning new names, locating classrooms,
wrestling with "lower" lockers, rushing to classes
and adjusting to academic work loads.
As the year progressed, classmates were able to
interact well within their division as well as being
accepted by upper-classmen. Under class officers,
they became organized and unified. This was some
thing to be proud of. The Class of '91 gained poise
and self-confidence, on its way to accept the reins
of a second year at Maryknoll.

Continue Tradition Of Excellence

The Maryknoll Schools celebrate their 60th anniversary year with a faculty
that continues a tradition of teaching excellence. New administrators —
Principal Andrew Corcoran, and Vice-Principal Wendie Wong wel
comed 14 new members to the faculty and staff on the opening day
of school. Within this group comes the foundation of the Maryknoll
family which has taught with the ideal of "Noblesse Oblige".
Through interaction with students in the sharing of knowledge,
they teach and advise as well as create friendships that are re
membered. Time is at a premium for the faculty and staff but there
always seems to be that extra time one gives for after-school
I activities and even weekends.
The spirit of the faculty is also shown through participation in
events as dressing in costume for Halloween, playing classroom
pranks on April Fool's Day and the appreciation shown while
being honored during Faculty Appreciation Day by the stu
dents of MHS.
The growth of Maryknoll in terms of academic excellence

■H9EE is a reflection of a dedicated faculty.
