An Adventure In Yearbooking

earbook — That good old period one class. It was truly a
class I'll never forget. The frustrations of drawing the
perfect layout, the joys of laughter from my classmates,
the relieved feeling after meeting deadlines, and the sensa
tional feeling seeing the completed product. It was an exper
ience!

Christmas Aloha Shimmers

ecember 12 — Saturday was a stormy night,

Dthe crowd gathered in Rogers Hall to witness a
change in tradition. Christmas Aloha '87 be
came a reality. The holiday theme was "Christmas
Harmony", and this year, rather than each division
singing the mandatory song, "O Holy Night", the stu
dentbody sang it together as to symbolize the unity
and spirit shared at Maryknoll not only during Christmas
— but always.

Homecoming '88 Has Style

ebruary 8-13 was a time for the Maryknoll family to show Its "Spartan Style" as

FHomecoming Week reigned supreme. In the Maryknoll tradition, the days were
organized to give both students and faculty a break from the rigors of aca
demics. Lunchtime activities allowed students to enjoy themselves and become one
family. The daily themes included "Dress with Style," "Stylin' in the Sun," "Opposite
Style,," and "Style with Class." Comedian Frank DeLima appeared to end the Week's
activities with a bang, or more precisely, a laugh. His presentation could not be topped
as everyone thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. On Friday, the cheerleaders led
the pep rally and the class float competition was held. The culmination of the festivities
was the ’AA' basketball game against St. Louis.

Cheerleading

ah! Rah! Rah! Our Mary-
knoll cheerleaders gener
ated spirit throughout the
year to encourage players and
fans at various Maryknoll and
Pack-Five sporting activities. Spir
ited and jubilant, the Varsity
cheerleaders played an essential
role in keeping the Spartan spirit
sky-high during good times and
bad times. These accomplished
and enthusiastic girls have
trained the Junior Varsity and
Freshman squads to become
better motivators of spirit and to
be more artistic in choreograph
ing their steps. Maryknoll's cheer
leaders are also athletes in their
own right. They work hard to stay
in shape and keep the fans smil
ing.

Volleyball __________ _

Marked by arduous sea
sons, the boys' varsity
and junior varsity vol
leyball teams spiked their way
to modest records. Despite
this, the teams did sparkle at
various points during the sea
son. The returnees show con
siderable promise for the future
in hopes of ambushing the rest
of the ILH.

The girls' varsity and junior
varsity volleyball teams also
had rugged seasons. However,
the girls stood together as a
team and continued to work
hard. For the returnees, contin
ued dedication will lead to im
proved results next year. As a
team, our girls have shown loy
alty and sportsmanship in the
face of adversity.

Bowling

ractice makes perfect" is

Pmost fitting in describing the
season of the girls' Varsity and
JV bowling teams. Through great ef
fort and perseverance, our girls
upended their opponents en-route
to snaring the ILM Championships in
both divisions. The boys' Varsity, and
boys' Junior Varsity were not as suc
cessful, this year proved to be an im
portant learning experience. The re
turnees hope for better results next
season while the take cherished
memories of fun and sportsmanship
with them. For all participants, bowl
ing is a sport they take pride in com
peting, whether they win or lose.

he Maryknoll girls' Varsity and

TJunior Varsity softball teams
hoped to swing their way to
titles in 1988. Our girls had a rough
season as they tried to upset the
powerhouses of the ILH. the softball
teams did not snare their respective
titles, they proved to be proud ex
amples of the Maryknoll spirit. The
courage and dedication to softball
they exemplified will give the girls an
edge over the opposition in 1989 and
hopefully ILH championships as well.

t has been a spectacular year for

IMaryknoll's first cross-country
team. The boys' Varsity runners
placed second in the ILH champion
ship and finished third in the state
championship with Paul Bedish and
Russell Garner taking one, two in indi
vidual state honors.

Not to be outdone, the girls' Varsity
team captured the ILM championship
and placed third at states. This sea
son marks the beginning of a new
and promising era in Spartan sports.
Coach Leo Marshall masterminded
the training of our victorious racers
and set standards for future teams to
emulate. There is no doubt that our
Spartan runners will contend for fu
ture titles with the coaching exper
tise and hard work we have seen this
year.

Wrestling

Our Wolfpack combatants
experienced a season of
ups and downs for the
Pack-Five wrestling team. Mary-
knoll provided five wrestlers who
tried their best to pin more exper
ienced grapplers. Although they
were written off by others in the
ILH before the season began, our
wrestlers gave a respectable
showing at each of the meets.
However, through hard work and
determination, the returning core
of gladiators are sure to improve
and become the dark horses of
the ILH.

Soccer

The girls' Varsity and Junior Varsity
soccer teams fell on hard times as
they tried to contend for their re
spective championships. Despite the re
sults, our Varsity girls performed well, man
aging to tie top-ranked lolani. The Junior
( Varsity team, together with the girls from
St. Francis, look to a better and more
promising season in 1988. With experience
( and strength, next year's teams are
bound to cause their opponents to be
more wary and concerned about the
"Women of Sparta.''

Mbasketball team fired away
for points and victories in the
1988 season' With an 11-3 season re
cord and second-place finish in the
ILH, the boys were intent on vanquish
ing all contenders and triumphing in
the state championship. Sellitto's
boys, though suffering from injuries at
mid-season, found ways to over
whelm the competition enroute to a
successful year. Despite the winning
record, the hoopsters will not be sat
isfied until they have won the elusive
state championship.

JV, Frosh, Basketball

The boys' Varsity 'AA' bas
ketball team has a promis
ing future partly due to the
wealth of talent in the Freshman,
Junior Varsity, and Varsity 'A'
squads. The Junior Varsity team
had an excellent season as they
lost by only a single point in their
championship match with Puna-
hou. The boys' Varsity 'A' and
Freshman teams did not have the
kind of year the Junior Varsity en
joyed, but both squads worked
hard and show tremendous
promise for the future.

Aceing their way to a possible champion
ship title, the girls' Varsity and Junior Var
sity tennis teams plan to light up the
courts with perfect form and graceful moves in
hopes of defeating all challengers. Riding upon
the second-place finish of last year's Varsity
team, our girls plot a strategy that will bring
much success. The core members of the Varsity
team are the polished veterans who have
shown great perseverance in the past and have
provided the Junior Varsity girls with a model of
sportsmanship and winning that will be followed
for seasons to come. No matter how our girls
fare in competition, they have represented the
Spartan spirit superbly.

Boys' Varsity tennis makes a comeback to the
courts after a two year absence. Under the ae
gis of Pac-Five, veteran seniors and determined
underclassmen, the team has high hopes of
bringing back a title as it did in 1985.

Paddling

he paddlers came into the
1987-88 season with hopes
of a title in their minds. Un
fortunately, both the boys and
the girls could only manage fair
seasons against swifter and more
experienced competition. Still,
both teams worked hard and
performed their best in the tradi
tion of the Spartan spirit. Despite
the results, next year shapes up
to be a better one as a mature
squad plans to take the helm and
steer to victory!

From The Editor..

ear Friends,
I want to thank you. We have come a long way together. We

have grown in laughter, understanding, wisdom and technical skill
through this shared experience of producing a yearbook. We have had our
moments of moodiness, mayhem and madness in attempting to meet
deadlines, improving layouts and writing descriptive captions. Some days
were better than others; some defy description!

As a staff, we have integrated graphic art skills with those of criticism,
evaluation, risk-taking and decision making. These elements, combined
with Mr. Chamizo's expertise, have enabled us to experience the joy of
seeing our efforts come alive via publication.

I wish to thank the yearbook staff for its dedication and patience. To Mr.
Chamizo, I extend my aloha for your continuing words of advise, support
and encouragement. To the student body, faculty and administration —
thank you for your endurance and good humor. A special thanks to B&W
Photography and to Jostens Publishers for their endless support.

How lucky we all were to have been a part of such a spectacular team.
Julie Anne Wassel
Editor-in-Chief
