MARYKNOLL:
THE TRADITION CONTINUES
The vision that is today Maryknoll High School perhaps began with a young
priest on horseback 70 years ago as he rode from the Catholic mission on Fort
Street to the little church of the Sacred Heart in the Punahou district.
Father Stephen P. Alencastre was among the first to dream of a large and
flourishing parish in the then “suburbs” of the Punahou and Manoa districts. A
new church, a parish hall and a school made up the vision.
The new church came on November 1, 1914. The parish hall, Bachelot Hall,
was erected in May, 1924. The vision was not complete before Father Stephen
was elected co-adjutor to Bishop Libert Boeynaems. But the vision did not end
with his new position and duties as Bishop following the death of Bishop
Boeynaems. Succeeding to the Vicar Apostolic of Hawaii in 1926, one of Bishop
Stephen’s first acts was to invite the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of
America, known as the Maryknoll Fathers, to take up missionary work in
Hawaii.
The Maryknollers were placed in charge of Bishop Stephen’s former parish,
Sacred Heart. Father William S. Kress, M.M., arrived in Honolulu in February,
1927 and became first resident pastor of the Puanhou district church.
With the coming of the Maryknoll Fathers, the vision of a parish school took
shape and became a reality with the arrival in September, 1927 of the first
group of Maryknoll Sisters. The first six grades of the elementary school were
opened in September, 1927.

In 1931 the first freshman class of the
high school was enrolled, under the
pastorate of Father Francis E. Fitzger
ald, M.M.
The year 1935 marked the first
graduating class of the high school—13
in all.
The high school division continued at
Wilder Avenue until 1948 when the for
mer MacDonald Hotel site was ob
tained on Punahou Street at Bingham
Street.
This historic site adjacent to the then
Frear property, was first developed in
the 1880’s when Col. Charles H. Judd,
then court chamberlain to King Kala-
kaua and active in the affairs of the
monarchy, built the residence which in
the early part of the century became
the MacDonald Hotel, for over 30 years
a landmark in the area.
The high school division moved to
the new site for the 1948 - 49 school
term but the facilities soon became in
adequate for the growing enrollment,
and needs for a modern school plant
became evident.
The Rev. George C. Powers, M.M.
took the task of bringing the vision of a
new facility to reality—with a modern
parish high school. Construction of the
Eresent building was begun in Novem-
er, 1952 with dedication services the
following year, August 30, 1953 under
Bishop James J. Sweeney.
In rare photos taken in the late 30s, the
spirit of Maryknoll is captured through

KEEPING
FAMILY TIES
Welcoming freshmen and new students into the
Maryknoll family has been an annual tradition. The
Acquaintance Week committee, headed by Tess
McAniff and advisor Mr. Shawn Fell, did a superb
job in organizing this year’s “AND” quainted theme,
September 19-24. The imaginative upperclassmen
garbed newcomers in the guises of streetwise cops
and robbers, cowboys and Indians, and some very
“odd-couples”.
Each day was highlighted by enthusiastically
played lunch-time games.
The week culminated in a Field Day at Kapiolani
Park where students participated with faculty in
team sports and “fun” events.
The eventful week was topped off with the annual
Acquaintance Week dance in Rogers Hall.

And Maybe Someday Your Road
Will Take You Far Away. . .
The time has come — the end of the beginning and the beginning of some f
thing greater — as we, the Class of 1984, expand our wings to embark on the
journey towards our destiny. Maryknoll High School was our nest, our security MICHAEL ANTHONY AMONG
blanket, our teacher, and now our point of take off. The foundations were laid
here. The mold cast. Many thanks to: The Boys; Ben, Da Ski’s,
Kelly G, Zane, BB & VB Boys, Ziggy & Gar
As we began our high school years, we were freshmen venturing into a new field, Coach and everyone else!! Special love
experience. We stumbled and fell all too often, only to pick ourselves up again, and thanks to my family, Mom, Dad, Frank,
all the stronger for it, never giving in, always reaching out for support . . . and Pat, Rita, Patrick Jr., and Carol Joyce, 1 love
always receiving more than enough. Then came the carefree days that charac you all!!
terized our sophomore year. Life was fun. We existed in our own idyllic world,
protected from the harsh realities of life by ourselves and each other. All of a Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
sudden, we became juniors. “Oh, to finally escape this madhouse,” to finally be Don’t walk in front of me,
free and independent, and truly on our own, were our only desires.
I may not follow.
Only too soon, now, we are seniors — wishing we could do it all over again. Just walk beside me and be my friend!!
The choices we have made, we look back on, but never regret. As we follow our
road — scared of the future, searching for acceptance, anticipating the best, —Camus
looking for answers, striving to fulfill our potential — we’ll remember that
inside each of us there is a part of all of us. We may go our separate ways now, Kazoo Crew 2 3, Peer Counseling 3 4, Basket
but our memories we’ll keep forever. ball JV 1 Vars 2 3, Capt 4, Volleyball Vars 2
Capt 3 4.
We will reminisce on our comfortable days at our Alma Mater with tender
ness, always remembering what made us smile, forgetting that which made us
cry. We will recall not the bitterness and the sorrow, but the laughter and the
joy; not the despair, but the hope; not the tears of sadness, but the tears of
happiness; not the failures, but the achievements; not the problems, but how we
overcame them. Most of all we will always cherish the love and acceptance we
found in each other.
. . . Have you wondered where
your road will lead you
Maybe to a bright day of
sunshine
Or a starry night in heaven
Or it might be you’re
afraid to go, afraid to go
But you’ve got to follow
your road
Or you’ll never know,
never know . . .
