CROSS-
COUNTRY

TRACK

Running cross-country fosters a
spirit of individualism and
initiative, reinforced with self-
dicipline. The challenges faced by
cross-country runners encouraged
individual accomplishment yet also
supported team unity.

This year, Maryknoll fielded
sixteen of Pac-5’s fourty-seven
cross-country runners on five
teams: Boys Varsity, Junior
Varsity, and Intermediate and Girls
Varsity, and Junior Varsity. Racing
up and down the rolling hills of
the Mid-Pacific campus, these
“slope striders” difficult training
paid off in the 1983-84 season.

Although track and field is one
of the most personal and
individualized sports, the Pac-5
track team became a close knit unit
this past season. Maryknoll did
contribute some fine athletes but
teamwork was the main ingredient
to their success.

Stride for stride, these superb
young athletes trained and pushed
for better times in both the sprint
and distance events, while
competitors in fielding events
strived for precision and timing.
The end result was a coach’s
dream: a unified, talented,
sweepingly victorious team.

PADDLING
SWIMMING

Getting from one place to
another by car is an easy task but
to try to swim or even paddle a
canoe is another story. You would
probably feel exhausted and even
frustrated, but not so for these two
groups of energetic athletes. They
enjoyed what they did regardless of
the pain because they knew the
rewards at the finish line would far
outweigh the suffering in the
beginning.

Maryknoll’s men and women
once again teamed up with Damien
High School in making the
“Kamiano/Te Hoe Mamo” canoe
team. These teams have raced all
around the island competing for
ribbons and medals. Everyday, long
hours of practice were put in to
prepare for their regattas. In the
end, victory was in their sight.

Swimming is a sport that we all,
as well as many other schools,
compete in. The swimmers of
Maryknoll have once again
participated with Pac-5 in making
their season a successful one. With
practices everyday at Mid-Pac’s
pool they were constantly
swimming laps to perfect their
timing and technique. This team
has worked very hard and will be
the team to watch out for in the
future.

SOCCER
GYMNASTICS
WRESTLING

Although it is not a well known fact, Maryknoll’s
participation in both Soccer, Gymnastics and
Wrestling is very much alive. Individuals from
Maryknoll helped strengthen PAC-5’s performance
during the past season. In the true sense of the
Maryknoll tradition, these fine young athletes proved
that they had the stamina to win.

Maryknoll’s involvment in soccer this year reached
undoubtedly, an all new high. Our Girls’ Varsity,
Boys’ Junior Varsity and Varsity teams kicked their
way into the hearts of supportive fans. These high
flying goalers worked long and hard to become one
of the finest.

Maryknoll took part this year in two sports which
had been dormant on campus. With the help of a
few Maryknoll athletes, the PAC-5 Gymnastics and
Wrestling Teams, though small, took part in meets
and proved themselves fit among the best in the
ILH.

SOFTBALL
BASEBALL

A combination of talent and
teamwork made the girls on
Maryknoll’s Varsity Softball Team
a contender for the ILH
championship. The girls worked
long and hard to get their hitting
and fielding up to its potential. A
close feeling of togetherness
coupled with the admirable effort
these young women gave, the MHS
softball team had one of its best
seasons ever.

Concentration and well-polished
skills made the Pac-5 Boys’ Varsity
Baseball Team a fearsome force;
once again Maryknoll’s best
sportsmen were called upon to
form one of the finest teams in the
ILH.

The team needed little
improvement, however, practice
does make perfect. Long hours at
practice included fielding, hitting,
and pitching. The time spent
sharpening their skills — hours of
sacrifice and hard work — paid off.
Not only did the team team
improve, but each player achieved
his personal best as well.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Being the editor-in-chief of this year’s yearbook demanded a lot of patience and endurance for just proofread
ing all the copy and layouts. Even though all the editors were in the first period class for yearbook, there still
was the inevitable last minute rush before deadlines. Producing these 156 pages would not have been possible
without the following people:

Mr. Chamizo: I couldn’t ask for any better yearbook advisor. Thank you for your expert advice, quick
proofreading, and for being demanding of the staff when I should have.

Jaymie: Despite the disagreements we had, you put together one of the hardest sections so efficiently and
beautifully. Thank you so much.

Leonard: Thank you for your creativity and your brand of humor. The results of your section make up for that
one mistake.

Therese: Thank you for giving me the least amount of worry, really.
Ann: Thanks for doing your best. It’s hard being a section editor your first year.
Laurie Anne and Wendy: Where would my editors be without you? Thanks for all your help.
Janine: Thank you so much for writing those body copies. They were a pleasant surprise.
The Staff: Despite your inexperience, you came through. Thank you.
The Photographers: Thank you for trying. We are all busy.
Mrs. Sandia: Thank you for your concern for our well-being.
Vince: thank you for being my chauffeur and for putting up with the grumpy editor-in-chief hardly anyone
sees.
B&W Studio: Thank you so much for all that you did for us in photography, especially in our emergency.
Davidson Photo: Thank you for providing the few photos we needed.
Laurence Hata: Thanks for quickly and efficiently printing the pictures we needed.
Mr. Anderson of The Honolulu Advertiser: Thank you for providing the Pac-5 photos we needed.
Chuck Klingman: Thank you for lending us your expertise from the Jostens Yearbook Company.
To all those not mentioned above without whose support the staff and I could not have succeeded, I thank
you.
