We have seen the opening of This book captivates that
a new chapter, "82," back then 'special feeling at Maryknoll
in September of 1981. For that is seemingly unexplained.
some, this will be their first We hope that all you readers

We, the Ka Moe1 Uhane
Staff, have incorporated the
help of a certain familiar
Magician (who happens to be
the cousin of our Math Club's
Mathemagici an) to stop time in
its tracks, and turn back the
pages of time for us to recap­
ture the memories.

Every single person,

students and faculty alike,

who has ever been a part of

Maryknol11s smal1 world has

been touched by Maryknoll's

special magic at one time or

another in their association

with this school.

Throughout the years, our
Maryknol1 High School has seen

hundreds' of new faces that are
at first unfamiliar. Eventual­
ly they become more familiar,
as they pass from the ranks of

underclassmen to upperclass­
men .

Within a student's span of
four years at Maryknol1, there
is a certain intimacy that de­

velops between themselves and
the school, other students and

faculty. The experiences we
encounter from our own experi-
ces, we find, are ones that

everyone goes through at some
time or another...

...the feeling of having been afraid and very lost, of walking into a

new and unfamiliar school...

...the shyness felt at making new friends and the initial intimidation

felt because of the upperclassmen and new teachers...

...the thrill of cheering your division's team's first game onto vic­

tory. ..

..memories of the first dance...

..times when we had gotten into mischief...

..times we made mistakes...

..times where we worked hard together...

..times we parti ed ...

..those late nights staying up getting those term papers done...

..times we cried together...and by ourselves...

..times of frustration and confusion...

..times we got high together - from each other...naturally...

..the excitement of the first prom...

..times we shared together...times we cared...

..the relief of vacation time when exams are over and school's out...

..a time where we grew up together...a little bit more each year...

..a time where we really learned something valuable...a little more

about ourselves and how to be more human and about those people who

have made a difference in our lives - our friends and family of Mary­

A truly dynamic group of
students have succeeded in
:apturing down on paper those
zaptivating moments of our
daily trials and tribulations
during the 1981-82 school
year. The Ka Moe' Uhane Staff
has given to you a collection
of glimpses of that "Maryknoll
Magic" at work throughout this
past year.

The Ka Moe1 Uhane Staffers
know full well the meanina of
DEDICATION, SACRIFICE, and TO­
GETHERNESS. Many students and
faculty never really know
about the countless afternoons
and endless weekends that are
spent to meet each deadline.
It is all part of the year's
work. From putting ideas down
on paper, drawing layouts for
each page, and deciding the
graphics and artwork .EVERYONE:
the section heads, the wri­
ters, the photographers, the
artist and designer, finance,
the advisors, and the editor
all contributed their time and
effort in individual ways.

During the course of the
year, priority lists had to be
rearranged as Ka Moe' Uhane
usually found itself at the
bottom of it. But as the dead­
lines loomed overhead, the
Staff pulled even closer to­
gether to meet them.

There were many headaches
and heartaches, disappoint­
ments and discouraging moments
for everyone, especially the
editor. Yet, for all the prob­
lems that they faced, the
Staffers ended up with a year­
book that was very much worth
"much blood, much sweat, and
many, many tears. . . "

Achievers

There is a saying, "Behind every strong country, there
are its1 strong leaders." This is the truth for this
year's accomplished juniors. For behind this spirited and
active division are their responsible and diligent
officers. These leaders of the Junior Class of 1983, in­
dividually, have a lot of concern, determination and in­
tegrity. When you get these individuals working together,
you'll end up with the dynamic driving force behind the
success of this up and coming division.

The officers, Lori, Lei, Shari, Susan, Mark and Jill,
were all behind the scenes working on the planning of
special division happenings throughout the year. Their
year's work of planned activities ranged from signing up
Acquaintance Week game participants, planning the divi­
sion gift to the Freshmen, compiling a balanced Thanks­
giving menu for each homerooms contribution, getting
Christmas Aloha '81 planned, getting the Homecoming float
completed for judging, and creating the most memorable
Class Night. Sometimes it seemed as if the officers were
never seen or heard , but it was just that the divison was
not there to witness the long hours spent carefully plan­
ning out each activity at the many meetings called. What
was apparent were the results of the Junior Officers' work
which, if it weren't for them, wouldn't have been such an
enjoyable and memorable year.

Being three years older
and wiser about school life,
the Juniors were getting
better with each effort of
participation in division as
well as school-wide activi­
ties. There seemed to arise
a strong sense of division­
identity.

Throughout the year, the
Juniors were given many op­
portunities to show their
spirit and root for the suc­
cess of their division. The
activities they participated
in ranged from Acquaintance
Week and Christmas Aloha to
Homecoming and chair duty.

Each person played a sig­
nificant role in the divi­
sion whether through partic-
pating or just showing their
support. By just being there
the Juniors showed that they
cared and that their spirit
was something that everyone
shared in.

Top

There really is no one type
of Junior at Maryknoll. Each is
unique in his/her own way even
though many may share the same
distinguishing traits. The ac­
quiring of their class rings was
an event that most of the Juniors
went through. The eighty-three
turns of the class ring seemed
important and uppermost in the
Juniors' minds for awhile.

As a Junior, each started to
plan and make a tentative deci­
sion about their future and col­
lege. Most Juniors spent time
having counsels with Mr. Leo
Marshall, the college counsellor,
and attending the various college
visits. The future and what they
wanted to do was not urgent but
was certainly in their minds.

Being a Junior brought
about a lot of energy and excit-
ment that culminated in Class
Nite. The Junior Class of 1983
became the Senior Class of 1983.

alized many important things.

The hardships that were once

overwhelming weren't really

that bad; after all, they had

lived through them. This year's

Juniors learned the importance

of growing, learning, and shar­

ing with each other. They came

to understand that going

through the unpredictable road

of life alone is too much for

just one person. And by learn­

ing that, they realized that

this past year wouldn't have

been the same without friends.

Together with friends, the

Juniors mutually sought to

achieve their goals. Whether it

was participating in sports,

congratulating artistic

achievements, or cheering on

division aspirations, the

Juniors showed what it meant

to be united. From this past

year, they had learned the ne­

cessity to work together to get

animated officers. Their de­
termination to create a pro­
ductive year for their fellow
classmates uppermost in their
minds. Under the painstaking
advising of Sr. Borgia Anne,
the Sophomores' year started
without a hitch. The offi­
cers vivacity and hard work
was seen through the organi­
zation of their division's
participation in Christmas
Aloha, Homecoming, the Fresh-
men-Sophomore Dance, and the

Although the officers had
their work cut out for them
at the beginning of the year,
the readiness they exhibited
as each activity came illus­
trated the time and effort
put out by this group of
leaders. Through their tire­
less devotion and energy,
Cecelia, Laurie Anne, Jackie,
Rhonda, Cheryl, and Jaymie
led the Sophomores to a year
that they won't soon forget.

Sparkling

Sophomores

The Sophomores were full
of enthusiasm as they start­
ed their second year at
Maryknoll. No longer the
"babies" of the school , the
Class of 1984 was ready for
a school year ignited with a
lot of spirit. And that's
exactly the kind of year
they got.

Their participation in
Christmas Aloha and Home-
coming illustrated their
enthusiasm and desire to be
socially active. Taking part
in clubs and sports meant
getting involved with other
people. However, the Soph­
omores were up to the chal­
lenge and gained from this
experience. They were always
willing to do their part to
make the year a memorable
one for the whole school as
well as for themselves. By
displaying spirit and energy
at the school assemblies
held at various occasions
during the school year and
taking part in the diverse
activities scheduled, the
Class of 1984 made a lasting
impression on themselves,
and the people around them.
