New, young and inexperienced players
filled the spots once held by graduates.
The coaches worked hard to bring their
girls to a pair of well-developed teams.
A regular training session after school
concentrated on basic fundamentals of
playing volleyball and teaching those in
experience players the tricks and strate
gies of the game.

All players were outstanding in
their very own style and techniques. With
helping hands of their coaches, the team
members gained much experience using
teamwork and persistence to make their
efforts work for them.

1982 saw the ‘M1 Boys' Basketball team sparkle
in another outstanding year of play. The 1981 season
witnessed that team take the ILH Championship title
and become the second best team in the state, that
kind of season is always hard to beat in any given
year. But the boys that made up this year's team were
unhampered by any need to better last year's record
and, instead, sought to better themselves.

Under the experienced coaching of Tony Sellitto,
the 'AA' Boys' Basketball team was predicted by pre
season polls as being the team that would set the
pace. With assistants Russell Dung and Darrell
Matsui, and with the return of six players from last
year, this team subjugated their opponents to sweep
three preseason tournaments.

After beating Kam in the first game of the sea
son, they went up against rival Punahou and the out
come was a 60-48 victory. The 'AA' Boys' continued
to sweep everything in their path and were beaten
only twice in the regular season. 1 hey closed the
regular season with a thriller, a 58-57 0T victory
over lolani. With a regular-season ending record of
10-2, the Spartans found themselves at the top of
the Illi standings and on their way to the Round
Robin and the State Championships.

The 1982 season saw a change in the roster of
players and new assistants added to the staff, but
the outcome was the same: the 'AA' Boys' Basketball
team is No. 1!

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Classy Class “H”
Calibre

The Boys' 'A', JV, and Frosh Basketball teams had
enriching seasons this past year. As these players
learned during tire past year, good seasons are not
dependent on the number of wins being more than the
number of losses. Instead, good seasons are depen
dent on tire game itself and the satisfying feeling
that the players get from 'playing tough.'

The Varsity 'A' Boys' team was skillfully coached
by Joe Yasutake and his assistant,Jeff Jones. Boast
ing returnees and players that have moved up from JV
they played to a fourth place tie with Damien, and
thus forced a play-off. They overthrew the Monarchs
65-38 and made their way to tire Round Robin. In the
first game of the Round Robin, they put a stop to
the winning streak of the regular season champ
Punahou with a 67-51 victory.

Peter Estomago returned as coach for the JV team
and brought them to a successful year that was mark
ed by a 8-3 record at one point during tiie season.

The Freshmen Boys showed potential for their
future playing years. Under the expert coaching of
Bill Jackson and Gary Rodrigues, the Frosh learned
the techniques involved in high school basketball.
At one point in the season, their record was 7-3.

All of these teams played inspiring basketball in
all of their games and that is the key to an
'excellent' season.

IHaking Points

The Varsity 'A' Girls' Basketball team, coached
by Peter Estomago, worked hard this past season to
bring each of its members together into one bonding
force. The girls had their work cut out for them as
they strived to unite all their individual talents
to make a winning team. In the true form of com
radeship, they offered constructive criticism dur
ing practice and gave enthusiatic support for each
other during the games. All in all, their desire to
be the best they could be proved rewarding as they
came out pleased and satified with their efforts
throughout the season.

The JV Girls' Basketball team was a rookie team
this year. Made up of mostly Freshmen, these girls,
went through vigorous practices with their coach,
Joe Yasutake. Their continous and unending drills
of jumping, shooting, running, and handling the
ball was naturally very tiring, but each girl was
intent on building up her skills. Though a young
team, their persistence paid off in a season they
were proud of.

Maryknol1 had their own Cross-Country team this past year.
Able to be independent of the Pac-5 team, our Cross-Country
team did its best to make the year a successful one. They
proudly represented Maryknoll in the ILH Championships in
various ways. The intermediate members found themselves the
possessor of second place. On the JV level, one member took
nineth place and also found herself in second place in the
St. Louis Championships. Another member took fourth place in
the ILH Championships and then went on the States where she
placed eleventh in a field of 250.

The Maryknoll part of this year's Track & Field team was
coached by Leo Marshall. Specializing in long distance run
ning, the team members all overlooked their initial aches
and pains to get to the peak of their abilities.

There was only one student from Maryknoll that was repre
sented in this past year's Water Polo team. Coached by Mr.
Limahai, she practiced with the other members everyday
afterschool from 3:00 to 5:00 at the Ala Mouna Beach Park or
the UH Pool.

The Pac-5 Swimming team, both JV and Varsity, followed
the Water Polo season. Maryknoll contributed two girls to
the Varsity team and one boy to the JV team. One of the girls
placed second in a dual race at the Mid-Pac meet and the
other placed second in the relays held at lolani . The sole
JV member took first place in the dual race at Mid-Pac.

The Maryknoll Canoe Paddling team was resurrected after a
year of absence. All of the coaches, Herman Clark, Cynthia
Kupau, Paul Coelho, and Robert Martinez, along with the team
members, sought to add their own talents to the "Te Hoe Mamu"
crews.

However little the number of athletes that participated in
the above sports, they should be congratulated for their
excellent representation of Maryknoll in interscholastic
competition.

Just

For Kicks

Maryknoll contributed nine players to this past
year's Varsity Pac-5 Boys' Soccer team. These nine
players included three Seniors, two Juniors, one
Sophomore, and three Freshmen. These nine boys
worked diligently with coaches and teammates whom
they saw only at practices and those few hours be
fore games. Their dedication to the team and the
sport could be seen everytime each member hurried
about his business afterschool to get to Mid-Pac by
3:00, which was the time when practice normally
began.

For the second year in a row, Maryknoll had its
own Varsity Girls' Soccer team. The seventeen girls
that made up this team worked hard at refining the
soccer skills that they already knew and learned
new ones. As a whole, the team was young, yet they,
too, understood the need to work together to
achieve the best results.

Despite the fact that Maryknoll possessed its
own Girls' Soccer team, there were still three girls
that participated in the Pac-5 Girls' Soccer at the
JV level. They had their work cut for them by play
ing on two teams, but they managed to have a fun
year al 1 the same.

Soccer is a hard sport to play as it requires
that a person play both defense and offense at the
same time while traveling up and down a field the
same size as a football field and remembering never
to use one's hands. So, Maryknoll was very proud
and fortunate to have had all these players rep
resent her in 1LH competition.

Grand Slammers

The Maryknoll Girls' Softball team was compiled

mostly of Sophomores and Freshmen this year. Their
coach, Andrew Corcoran, advised them proficiently
in the techniques and skills of softball. Through
their determination each player became successful
in obtaining their own individual goals and per

fecting their talents.
The past year's Softball team will be the one

to look out for in the future. During the season
just gone by, they showed potential for the coming
years. They, too, are expectant for the forthcom

ing seasons.
The Baseball team was again a part of the Pac-5

league this past year. Under the coaching of Rick
Pedgram, Rob Dolon, and Tim Dunham, the boys that
represented Maryknoll practiced long and hard.
They learned new signals and new tactics and per
fected what they already knew. The continuous and
sometimes exhausting practice drills proved worth
while in the end as they, as true sportsmen, en
joyed every minute of being at the plate, pitching

or tagging out their opponents.
The Maryknoll Booster Club has been a long-time

standing organization and over the years has be
come an integral part of the school. The Booster
Club is a group of people who get together to
raise money for the athletic program. As always,
the Booster Club sponsored their ever popular
luau. The proceeds of this annual event as well as
other activities went into purchasing needed
equipment for Maryknoll and the sports depart
ment. These people worked hard to improve the
available facilities so that the students'
physical education would improve.

this Maryknoll Magic is...

...each and every one of
