2019 Season Presenting Sponsor

A declaration
of stellar
performance.

BMO Harris Bank applauds
the enargizing talent in this
evening’s performance.
We are honored to be a
partner of The Muny and
the principal sponsor of
1776 The Musical.

MIKE’S NOTES 11

101 years in, we begin.

With awe and humility, I welcome you to The Muny’s first production of our second century.
Guys and Dolls will forever be the first show on our thrilling new stage, christening the first
phase of our beautiful new stage house. Your beautiful new stage house.

The Muny rests—and sometimes dances—on two pillars: civic aspiration and artistic
excellence. This theater was created to welcome everyone in St. Louis to enjoy a world-class
production on a summer night. It’s a rare marriage of artistry and access; we are, indeed,
“alone in our greatness.”

So, whatever you call this transformation—a necessary renovation, a dramatic renewal, a
renaissance—you are seeing a triumphant illustration of the spirit, vision and courage of
St Louis. As you look at this stunning new stage, I hope that you are as deeply moved as I
am, struck not just by its undeniable coolness, but by the way it opens possibilities. Here is
our community, honoring its past and moving bravely into its future. This ambitious project,
Phase I in our campaign to secure our second century, speaks to who we are, where we’ve
been and what we aspire to become.

You can’t imagine what it’s been like around here since Meet Me In St. Louis closed out our
100th season. (Seriously, if you haven’t yet seen our time-lapse video, go online and watch
tonight. Your jaw will drop). We dreamed big last year, tackling the most rigorous season
ever. It drew to a grand finale—and there was no time for even a pause, much less a
break. Demolition began immediately, and we needed all hands on deck. The effort from my
colleagues this year has been mind-boggling. As challenging as its been, not one complaint,
not one exhausted groan. Look around, and know that all of this happened in an astonishing
10 months. The change isn’t only the structures, either: Every system backstage, onstage, or
underground is also brand-new. Hundreds of women and men deserve profound gratitude,
but three colleagues’ names must be read by you right now: Tim McDonald, Sean Smith and
Tracy Utzmyers.

Throughout this program, you will read other names: the audience members, families,
foundations, and corporations who have stepped forward to show how much they believe
in The Muny, and therefore in St. Louis. To them, also, I offer colossal thanks. We are $72
million toward our $100 million goal. There’s a ways to go, to be sure, but it’s been a
gratifying start.

We decided to soar into our next century with arguably one of the greatest musicals of
the last century, Guys and Dolls. Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows’ “fable of Broadway”
has it all—laughs, love, magical songs and thrilling dances. This
extraordinary creative team, cast, musicians and crew are joining
Muny history by creating the first show on this new stage; I suspect
that you’ll experience their pride and joy along with their tremendous
talent.

And now, let’s begin our second century.
