A HISTORY OF THE MUNY 73
A CANOPY OF GREEN SPREADS gracefully over a stage half the size of a football field.
In front of it stretch nearly 11,000 seats, arranged in a gentle 52-foot rake. Each evening from
mid-June through mid-August, the lights blaze, the music swells and a dervish of dancers defy
the laws of gravity. It’s a St. Louis institution. A tradition for 100 summers. It’s The Muny.
The love of good theatre on a grand scale seems to have been part of the St. Louis psyche from
the outset: In 1916, actress Margaret Anglin selected the site of the present day Muny for an
outdoor production of As You Like It. The show featured a “community prologue,” giving more
than 200 St. Louisans a chance to perform. The show was a critical and popular success.
In 1917, the Convention Board of the St. Louis Advertising Club decided to proceed with plans
to host in June the 13th Annual Convention of Advertising Clubs of the World. As late as April
10 there was no entertainment feature for the convention, which would open June 3. Attorney
Guy Golterman, Parks Commissioner Nelson Cunliff and Mayor Henry Kiel set the wheels in
motion that would lead to the construction of an outdoor theatre in Forest Park. The first
municipally-owned outdoor theatre in America was built in 49 days, minus seven days lost to
rain. The grand opera Aida was presented on June 5, 1917.
By 1919, a charter had been formed naming the outdoor theatre: The Municipal Theatre
Association. On June 16, 1919, Robin Hood was presented as the first show performed under
“The Muny” banner.
Since that summer of 1919, when Robin Hood and his band of merry musicians first trod
the venerable boards, St. Louis has considered The Muny its own theatre. That tradition may
have been established by then-mayor Kiel, who demonstrated his support of the fledgling
enterprise by making his stage debut in that first production as King Richard.
THROUGH THE DECADES, The Muny has played host to some of the biggest names
in show business: Vincent Price, Cary Grant, W. C. Fields, Bob Hope, Ethel Merman, Cab
Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Phyllis Diller, John Travolta, Angela Lansbury,
Betty White, Sarah Jessica Parker, Heather Headley, Jennifer Holliday and a constellation of
other stars. The Muny has produced and presented grand operas, operettas, concerts, ballet
troupes and Broadway musicals. Its current fame rests on the latter, with St. Louisans justly
proud of the elaborate and professionally-staged classic Broadway musicals presented on
the Muny stage, unrivaled by any theatre anywhere!
THE MUNY’S FAME HAS RESTED SOLIDLY on its fabulous productions, yet it seems
that there is more than show biz behind its success. Native St. Louisan, Muny veteran and
popular actress Mary Wickes put this mystique very well: “...You young lovers take notice –
there is no more romantic setting than The Muny on a warm summer night, full moon, that
great orchestra playing and a golden-voiced tenor singing...Trust me. It’s as close to heaven
as some of us will get!”

MATCHING GIFT COMPANIES
Many St. Louis employers match gifts their employees or retirees make to arts institutions. These
companies have matched gifts this year, so donors receive Muny Partner benefits at a higher level.
Contact your own Human Resources department to see if your employer can match your gift and get
the process started – we’ll take it from there!

PHOTOGRAPHING, VIDEOTAPING OR SOUND RECORDING OF ANY PERFORMANCE
WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE MANAGEMENT IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
EMERGENCY NUMBER (314) 367-9191
Register your seat location with one of the Head Ushers and we will
contact you immediately should an emergency arise.
Guest vehicle assistance is provided by AAA.
THANK YOU
In consideration of your fellow patrons, please TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES.
SMOKING IS PROHIBITED IN ALL AREAS INSIDE THE THEATRE GATES AT ALL TIMES
(including, but not limited to, all smoking tobacco, e-cigarettes and vaporizers).
PERFORMANCE TIMES
All performances begin promptly at 8:15 pm. For the enjoyment of all and in consideration of the performers, please
arrive on time and remain in your seats until the performance has ended. The regular 8:15 pm starting time may
be delayed by weather or other reasons, but this does not mean a performance will be cancelled.
TICKET DONATION
We hope this never happens, but if you are unable to use your tickets, consider donating them back to The Muny.
You’ll receive a tax deduction for their face value and we will be able to offer them to another audience member.
Return your tickets to The Muny Box Office AT LEAST 24 HOURS PRIOR TO THE DATE PRINTED ON THE TICKET. A
receipt reflecting the amount paid for the tickets will be issued for your tax purposes. Receipts cannot be issued if
tickets are received less than 24 hours prior to the performance date, unless as a result of an officially cancelled
performance.
RAIN CHECKS
The start time may be delayed or the performance may be interrupted due to inclement weather or other reasons.
If a performance is cancelled before one hour of playing time has elapsed, including scheduled intermissions,
your ticket will serve as your rain check. Rain checks may be redeemed for a ticket of the same value for any
performance in the same season, or for a refund of the ticket price. If a performance is given after a delayed start
or resumes after an interruption, rain checks are not valid and may not be exchanged or refunded. We will make
every effort to present the performance, and typically will not cancel the performance before 9:30 pm. A delayed
start time or the length of an interruption in the performance will be determined by theatre management on a per
case basis. Notice of delays or cancellations will be made over the theatre public address system and will also
be posted online at www.muny.org and twitter. In the case of a cancelled performance, beginning the following
day, rain checks may be exchanged at The Muny Box Office for a ticket of the same value for any remaining
performance of the same season subject to availability. Rain checks also may be redeemed for a full refund of
the ticket price or donated back to The Muny. A refund will be issued to the purchaser on record with The Muny. A
donation receipt reflecting the rain check value will be issued for tax purposes. Rain checks must be redeemed
by August 31, 2019 either in person or by mail to The Muny Box Office. Only actual, legible tickets, in their
original form will be accepted as rain checks.

our patrons, our performers, our stage and our trees.
PREVENTING:
Keeping the mighty oak tree you are accustomed to seeing on stage
left was our hope all along. As we moved through renovation plans, it
became obvious that the tree needed to be removed for safety. After
years of growing next to concrete structures, without the benefit of a
proper growing environment, its root structure was far from healthy
and stable. Because of this, the tree was rotting from the inside out.
PRESERVING:
That 300-year-old oak tree is such an important piece
of The Muny’s history, we are working to preserve its
legacy for years to come. Urban landscapers and
arborists are grafting new trees from the mighty oak.
What is grafting? When grafting a tree, cuttings from
the tree are collected and spliced onto existing trees.
Once grown together, it creates an exact, genetic copy
of the original. In the years to come, these cloned trees
will be planted throughout campus – ensuring the
legacy lives on.
P R E PA R I N G :
This off-season, state-of-the-art structured soil cells were ‘planted’
during the rebuilding of the stage. These cells span the length of the
stage and provide the ideal growing environment for our trees’ roots
to spread out safely, away from the infrastructure, and offer proper
aeration and irrigation opportunities. These cells ensure the new
canopy will not only survive but thrive from years to come.
PLANTING:
When will the new trees arrive? They will be here next year for Season 102.
The new tree canopy takes a minimum of two years to properly prep for travel
and successful planting. Last spring, we selected the perfect trees for our
new canopy from an industry-leader that specializes in Muny-sized trees. Next
season, seven 25-30 foot tall trees with root balls 9-10 feet in diameter will
make their Muny debut just in time for the first show of the season.
AND THAT’S THE DIRT ON WHAT’S
HAPPENING WITH THE TREES.
